We celebrated our milestone 60th birthday by giving a makeover to the Steenbhoms, a family that has had a special association with The Village across three generations. 4

We love taking a trip down memory lane with our retailers and customers, and the Steenbhom family have been on both sides of the counter across five decades. So, we took some time to get to know the family and they were happy to share some of their stories. “If only I’d made notes, I could write a fantastic book about The Village!” says St Ives local Merrilee Steenbhom. Merrilee and her husband Howard (who passed away last year) built their house nearby in 1966 before buying the newsagent on Mona Vale Road back in 1969, which came with a smaller store inside the centre. Melissa in an advert for Tattlers Cafe in the 90s
“It wasn’t long before Howard had taken the lease on four shops (where Flight Centre is now) and turned the newsagent into a colonialstyle cottage with a veranda,” Merrilee recalls. “We always employed locals. Nancy, who now works at Nextra, first worked for us in the shop when she was 16.”

The Steenbhoms never did things by halves, and when the time came to move on from the newsagency, they took over a vast 140-seat space for Tattlers Cafe (where Cotton On and Cafe Milligram are now). Opened in 1994, the cafe was run by Merrilee’s daughters Louise and Melissa, and it’s fair to say that there is nothing quite like it in the centre these days.
“No matter what happens, I’ve always felt supported by this special community” “We had a license and a grand piano in the cafe. We’d employ local pianists, and there were plenty of celebrations over the years,” Melissa says. “Katie from Woolworths had her 21st in the cafe. My dad loved people, so even though he had retired, he’d be at Tattlers most days. He’d be chatting away with everyone while we worked hard!” While the family have loved their association with The Village over the years, there have been some sad times, including a fire that wrecked another venture, a gift shop called Tickled Pink.
“No matter what happens, I’ve always felt supported by this special community,” Merrilee continues. “When I’m here I feel so welcomed, like I’m talking in my kitchen with friends, because we’ve known each other so long. Other centres are not so personal, so I don’t go really anywhere else. Everything I need is here.” Melissa agrees it’s the social community she grew up with, which is still going strong today, that makes The Village unique. “I often pop into Woolies to do my shop and end up being here for three hours because I bump into so many people.” Likewise, Merrilee can’t take a step in the centre without seeing someone she knows. “I still have lunch with some of the retailers from 30 years ago, and high-flying businesspeople in suits come up to me and say ‘I used to do a paper round for you.’” Although the newsagency, cafe and gift shop have long since stopped trading, the family’s association with the centre is set to roll on. “My daughter Jessica has just finished year 12 and is asking around all the shops for a job,” Melissa says. “It would make me laugh if she started working at the newsagent or in a cafe!”

THE STEENBHOMS HIT THE SHOPS We had so much fun taking the Steenbhom ladies on a shopping spree at The Village to select new outfits for their makeover to celebrate the centre’s 60th birthday. Our resident stylist was on hand with some expert advice as they got ready for the photoshoot at the family’s beautiful home in Pymble. “We really enjoyed the experience together and it was great to share our story about our history at The Village,” says Melissa. You’ll find more pics and videos of the makeover of our much-loved local family on our social channels over the next few weeks as the celebrations continue!
