Local hiking group explores crater On February 1, 2014 the High Country 4-H Hiking Group traveled just east of Barstow to the City of Ludlow to visit the Pisgah Crater Area in the Mojave Desert. Pisgah Crater is a 320 foot tall inactive volcano that towers above a large lava field left over from a volcanic eruption from that occurred 21,000 years ago. The site is especially interesting because of the lava tube formations visitors can see there. The tubes are formed when the lava crust cools over the whole outer surface of an active lava stream. Eventually the stream drains, leaving an open tube. These tubes can vary in size from small formations on the surface of the ground to relatively large cave-like structures that hikers will often explore. I’ll have to say I was especially excited to see these tubes again because I had not seen them in many years. My first experience visiting the crater and its tube-like formations happened when my children were in 4-H; the 4-H hiking leader was Jane Recht, a Hamilton High School Biology teacher. I decided to be a brave Hiking leader when I learned Recht would be traveling to see the crater. I traveled 3 hours to get there with a determined group of seven other

individuals. After our sturdy group arrived, we hiked over the hard lava crust. Some areas were so rough that the other hikers and I had to be careful not to fall and scrape our knees. Often we’d find surface tubes and then we’d lose a member as they crawled bravely through the

tube to the other side. The lava structures, with their peculiar shape, reminded me of gopher tunnels or a hide-out for one of those worm creatures from an old scary movie. The highlight of the trip was going down into Glove Cave. The cave is located inside the mouth of

one of the larger tubes. Inside of the cave itself, visitors will find a small opening that they can crawl down inside of. The opening will lead to a narrow passageway, and this passageway opens to a large cavern.

Lions Club hosts speech contest

It may be true that a bit of color in water may not make it harmful to drink, but it certainly makes it unappealing to drink. So color in our water does matter when it comes to drinking it. Color is also an important factor to consider in regard to water that we use for other purposes such as for home uses, industrial uses, and in some aquatic environments.

By Jodi Thomas A new year marks the start of another installment of the high school “Student Speech Contest,” an event unique to the California Lions Club chapters in Multiple District 4 (MD4). MD4 is composed of 15 districts

all over the State of California and each of the districts is divided into several chapters. The idea to hold the contest came out of a search for something that all the 15 districts could participate in together. The larger organization wanted the districts to interact with one another more and become a

stronger unit, but was unsure how to do that. Things changed in 1937, when Lions Deputy District Governor Frank Coiston suggested the contest, which proved to be a great success and has been held every year since. This year the Anza Chapter of the

Lions Club, one of many chapters within MD4, chose high school student Emma Hennings to represent them in the next round. Hennings won the speech contest at the local high school level and will now be competing against
