TAC recommends removal of 10-minute parking limit by Elder and Pico Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent The county’s Traffic Advisory Committee has recommended that the ten-minute parking limit surrounding the intersection of West Elder Street and Pico Avenue be removed. The TAC’s unanimous April 24 decision would eliminate the 10-minute limit on the north side of West Elder Street between Pico Avenue and 120 feet west of Pico Avenue and on the east side of Pico Avenue from Elder Street to 50 feet north of Elder Street, although the TAC recommendation also included extending the red curb painting by that intersection to

A l t h o u g h t h e c o u n t y ’s Department of Public Works (DPW) can paint the red curb to the allowable 20 feet without San Diego County Board of Supervisors approval, the county supervisors will make the final decision on the elimination of the time limit. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hold a first reading and introduction of the ordinance amendments June 24, in which case the second reading and

adoption would be scheduled for July 22. The amendment to repeal the time limit would take effect August 21, although DPW could remove the signs prior to that date. “The idea is to remove the tenminute parking signs so it’s open to the public, open and available to the public,” said county Department of Public Works civil engineer Karel Shaffer, who chaired the April 24 TAC meeting. The ten-minute time limit originated when a charter school was on the 127 W. Elder Street property bounded by Mission Avenue, Elder Street, and Pico Avenue. “The charter school required the ten-minute parking. Since they’re gone it doesn’t need

to be there any more,” Shaffer said. The building is now a restaurant (127 West Social House). “Because of the demand the restaurant is asking to have the parking prohibitions removed,” Shaffer said. “There’s a demand. There’s opportunity to park safely,” said DPW traffic engineering manager Murali Pasumarthi. “It’s a good thing.” West Elder Street, which is not classified in the Mobility Element of the county’s General Plan, is a two-lane striped roadway 32 feet in width. The red curb will be extended to ensure that intersection sight distance is not blocked. “I think

According to Ken Ostroske, FETA bargaining chair, negotiation terms were sunshined [posted and available for the community] in October, but the associations were unable to enter negotiations until March 11, because of district schedule conflicts. Only two terms were open for negotiation this year – salary and benefits – as other negotiations were discussed in the most recent contract discussion. “Once we got to the table, we had a good conversation,” said Ostroske. “It was a good back and forth.” In the contract agreement with FETA, a three percent salary increase was agreed upon, in addition to an off-schedule payment of $500 for each benefited bargaining unit employee to offset increases in health and welfare benefit costs effective July 1, 2014. Other terms included an increase to the cap for health and welfare benefits of $750 effective July 1. Ostroske explained that the additional off schedule bonus would help to defray the increase in out-of-pocket costs in healthcare. “It doesn’t cover the increase, but it does help,” he said. In the contract agreement with CSEA, similar terms were discussed and agreed upon. Negotiation terms included a three percent salary increase plus an offschedule bonus of $250 for each and every classified bargaining unit employee effective July 1, 2014, and an increase to the cap for health and welfare benefits of $750 effective July 1. It was also agreed in negotiations that a three percent increase in salary schedules would also apply for all management, confidential, and unrepresented employees and an off-schedule payment of $500 issued to offset increases in health and welfare benefits effective July 1, 2014, and an increase to the cap for Health and Welfare Benefits of $750 effective July 1. In addition to salary and benefit discussion, Ostroske mentioned that teacher evaluations were also addressed. “These are designed around teacher growth,” explained Ostroske. “At the end of the year, administrators may suggest resources. We have had a good collaboration thus far, and we are still working on where we are going. We are on the right track with the evaluations, and both sides are truly working on benefiting students.”

the Water Board will allow “urban” water districts that sell more than 20 percent of their water to commercial agriculture to subtract agricultural water sales from the amount being reported under the new regulations. San Diego County is one of the largest agricultural counties in the state and the nation. Reminding people in the rest of California that agriculture exists south of the Grapevine, and that there is lots of it, is an ongoing battle I will continue to fight. Even in this drought, we have enough water. We just need to get smarter about how we use it.

LOCAL High speed chase ends in DeLuz with two arrests Kim Harris Staff Writer

Two people were taken into custody Monday evening, April 27, following a high speed chase that ended in a foot pursuit in DeLuz. The chase began on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County when police attempted to pull over the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban for suspected reckless

driving. The driver, who had one passenger in the vehicle, led police on a chase through San Bernardino County to Interstate 15, through Norco and Corona at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour, eventually exiting on Nicholas Road in Lake Elsinore. Taking to the side streets, the driver of the Suburban traveled through Wildomar, the Santa Rosa Plateau, and into DeLuz. The vehicle eventually crashed into

a canyon and both the driver and passenger fled on foot. With the help of a Sheriff’s K-9 unit, both individuals (a man and woman), whose identities have not been released by authorities, were taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. The female suspect was bitten by the K-9. Both suspects were treated at the scene by paramedics. The California Highway Patrol as well as the San

Man arrested on drug charges during compliance check operation Debbie Ramsey Managing Editor

During the process of conducting a probation compliance check, a Fallbrook man, Cesar Murillo, 28, was found to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Patrick Yates. The incident took place when deputies and detectives were conducting compliance checks on seven Fallbrook residents on April 11. When officers pulled up in front of one residence they were going to visit, Murillo was contacted out in front. All of the individuals the officers were checking on were known offenders and AB-109 (Assembly Bill 109) early release probationers. They were identified through crime and intelligence analysis as individuals most likely to re-offend. At the completion of the compliance checks, deputies conducted directed patrol in the Fallbrook area. During the detail, 13 field interviews were written on individuals suspected of criminal potential. To comment on this story online, visit www.thevillagenews.com.

FA L L B R O O K – F o r h e r community project at Sullivan Middle School, eighth grader Remy Arnold, 13, set a goal of $100 in pet food donations to donate to the Fallbrook Food Pantry. She wanted low income people to get pet food too, keeping their pets home and then being able to use that money elsewhere rather than donating to the animal sanctuary as those pets have lost their homes already. In three hours, on April 18, she received well over $450 in cash and pet food donations, well exceeding her goal. She had planned on three more events and still plans on doing them. Harley, an American bulldog/ pit bull, is now up for adoption. He was found a couple of months ago in the De Luz area, skin over bones and no able to stand up. He had to be hospitalized for awhile before he could be transferred to the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary. It looked like he had been used as a bait dog for dog fights, as his teeth had been filed down. His is estimated to be 8 years old, is neutered, micro-chipped and up-to-date with his shots. He is good with other dogs, people, and children. Cats are probably not a problem either. More than likely he is housetrained. Harley loves to play with a ball! He can be seen on You Tube by searching for “Harley plays ball in Wizza’s park.” Because of his past, he needs to be fed separate from other dogs, due to food aggression. The sanctuary is also looking for volunteer dog walkers and helpers in the cattery. The walking of dogs is also very good for people’s health, so the knife cuts on both ends: volunteers work on their health and give the animals a good time! For more information, call the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary (760) 685-3533 and come over to meet Harley at 232 W. Aviation Rd.

HEALTH

Vaccine exemption rate drops in San Diego County SAN DIEGO COUNTY – The measles outbreak that started in Disneyland wound up sickening nearly 150 people in seven states, including 14 in San Diego County. Some children who got sick were too young to be immunized, but most of the people infected were unvaccinated by choice. This outbreak could likely have been prevented if people who were exposed to the highly contagious respiratory disease had been immunized. So, the County Health and Human Services Agency is urging parents to make sure their children are fully immunized against measles and the 13 other childhood diseases that can be prevented by vaccines. “The measles vaccine is one of the most effective immunizations we have these days,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., county public health officer. “Immunized people can expect up to 97 percent protection after getting the two recommended doses of the vaccine.” Locally, the number of children who lacked all or some of the recommended vaccines had been steadily increasing until last year when the California Department of Public Health changed the process

for parents to get a Personal Belief Exemption (PBE). The new form must be signed by a health care professional and a parent or guardian when seeking an exemption from required vaccinations. Since then, the percentage of San Diego County kindergarteners with a PBE for childhood vaccinations dropped from 4.5 percent last school year to 3.5 percent this current year. What this means is that out of the nearly 44,000 kindergarteners enrolled in local schools, 1,518 were missing some or all of the recommended vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends infants get immunizations at birth, 2, 4, 6, 12-15, and 18 months of age to protect them against many diseases, including measles, mumps and whooping cough. An annual flu shot is also recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Babies are not the only ones who should be vaccinated. Parents, older siblings, grandparents, health care professionals, and babysitters also need to be up to date. High immunization coverage levels mean fewer people get sick. “Vaccines are safe and effective

A mother holds her infant while a vaccine is administered at a county public health center. and the best way parents can protect their children against disease,” Wooten added. “The lower number of kindergarteners with a personal belief exemption is a step in the right direction.” Vaccinations help protect

local children and the general public from disease. Countywide immunization efforts are part of the Live Well San Diego vision, which aims to improve the health and well-being of local residents. Parents should ask their doctor or clinic to check their child’s immunization record and make

sure their baby is up-to-date. For more information on immunizations and the diseases they prevent, parents should contact their health care provider, visit www.sdiz.org or call the County Immunization Branch at (866) 358-2966.

Three ways to prevent Fallbrook Library reaches out to a stroke grandfamilies SAN DIEGO COUNTY – There are three things people can do to prevent a stroke. They’ve probably heard this advice before, but may not know it goes for stroke as well. • Exercise • Eat healthy foods • Don’t smoke If people do these three things on a regular basis, they are greatly diminishing their risk of having a stroke. “Stroke is a critical health issue in San Diego County,” said County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who was joined by San Diego Padres representatives and local health officials at Petco Park on April 24 to promote Strike Out Stroke Night at Petco Park taking place at the team’s game April 25 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “Working with our many public and private partners, we want to increase awareness of stroke and ultimately eliminate it from our communities.” Stroke can be prevented. That is why, for the fourth year in a row, the County is partnering with the San Diego Padres and the Stroke Consortium to raise awareness about stroke and the negative impact this disease is having in the region. Stroke survivors, family members and friends will also be present at the game. This effort is part of the County’s Live Well San Diego vision of safe, healthy and thriving residents and communities. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and kills over 1,000 San Diegans every year. In 2013, there were 1,114 stroke deaths in San Diego County. There were also 1,730 emergency room

visits and 6,611 hospitalizations due to stroke. Fortunately, deaths, emergency room visits and hospitalizations due to strokes have declined in the last few years. Local health officials aim to keep driving the number of deaths down and make San Diego a strokefree zone by raising awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of stroke. “The physicians and patients of San Diego have greatly benefited from the San Diego Stroke Consortium. The Consortium fosters communication and collaboration amongst all major stroke centers in San Diego which allows for exceptional care and best practice across the county,” said Dr. Royya Modir, San Diego County Stroke Consortium representative. If someone near is having a stroke, it is extremely important that bystanders act F.A.S.T. and call 9-11 immediately. F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of stroke and stands for: FACE: Is a side of the face droopy or is it numb? Is the smile uneven? ARM & LEG: Is there weakness, numbness, difficulty walking? SPEECH: Is there slurred speech? Does the person have difficulty speaking? TIME: Time is critical. If any of these symptoms are noticed, call 9-1-1 immediately. “Knowing the risks and signs of a stroke can make the difference between life and death,” said Nick Macchione, director of the County Health and Human Services Agency. “If you recognize the warning signs of a stroke, you can get medical help immediately, which is crucial.”

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Library is creating a GrandFamily Resource Center dedicated to grandparents and grandchildren and will feature a collection of informational resources to help grandfamilies solve the unique legal, financial, medical, educational, and other challenges that often come along with raising grandchildren. Library staff can help grandparents and grandchildren by identifying resources and find assistance that is provided by other community and state agencies. Millions of grandparents have returned to the role of parent as they assist with or assume the responsibilities of raising their grandchildren. San Diego County Library is now offering new services to connect this underserved part of the community with the resources they need, and provide programming that supports these special intergenerational relationships. The Great Hatsby Garden Party celebrates spring

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Newcomers and Encore Clubs (Newcore) joined together at the beautiful Grand Tradition on April 21 to welcome spring with a gala event, hosted by Newcomers. This year’s theme was the “The Great Hatsby Garden Party” and all participants were encouraged to wear hats and garden party attire. In addition to the camaraderie with friends, everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon followed by a parade of attendees to select

winners in the categories of Most Glamorous Hat, Most Creative Hat and Craziest Hat. The special highlight for the afternoon was a dancing demonstration by dance studio instructors Ryan Lockhart and Danelle Newman who performed period dances including the Quickstep, Foxtrot, Charleston, Argentine Tango and Rumba. At the end of the event, the beautiful handmade table centerpieces and Grand Tradition gift certificates

Musical program to feature Scandinavian music TEMECULA – Southern CA Damekor will present a short program of Scandinavian folk music to celebrate spring on Friday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. This talented group of singers and instrumentalists will be performing at The Little Viking Gift Shop in Old Town Temecula. The Damekor’s program will contain some interesting styles of music unique to Scandinavia including yoiking and kulning as well national songs to celebrate Norway’s Constitution Day on May 17. Anyone who has seen Disney’s wildly popular Frozen (Frost in Norwegian!), has heard a great example yoiking, a traditional Sami form of song. One of the oldest living music traditions in Europe, yoiks’ sounds are similar to the traditional chanting of some Native American cultures. Kulning or kulokking are herding calls used to call livestock down from high mountain pastures where they have been grazing. The song has a high-pitched vocal technique so that it can be heard or used to communicate over long distances and has a fascinating and haunting tone. These lokks are

sometimes family-based and are handed down so that a family’s cows will know they are being called. Sometimes the tones are related to the tones of the cowbells worn by the cows. The Damekor’s program will also include a song by the Swedish

Fallbrook natives create natural hummus alternative, Sun Dip Andrea Verdin Special to The Village News

With the agricultural roots in Fallbrook, it makes sense that its residents are naturally inclined to create products that are natural, wholesome, and delicious. Fallbrook-born Adam Shockey, 26, and Kyle McClellan, 28, are two perfect examples of this, and have created a business from the ground up using sunflower seeds. Shockey and McClellan created Solis Brand, which strives to bring its customers the tastiest dip they have ever had, made from sunflowers and other natural ingredients. The creators, who grew up here, have based their office of operations in the heart of Fallbrook as well. According to Shockey, the idea came in May 2010 when he visited a friend who had been involved in selling products at farmers markets. “I wanted to make something healthy that we could sell, so one day we got a blender and started throwing things in,” he said with a smile. “We wanted to create an alternative to hummus, since it was popular at the time we began. Sun Dip is that, plus it’s vegan, GMOfree, and gluten free.” Once the product was finetuned, Shockey and McClellan were able to market their product at various farmers markets in the

Fallbrook’s Major Market. Though it may seem a bit unorthodox to have sunflower seeds as the main ingredient of a dip, Shockey believes the product speaks for itself. “All it takes is for someone to taste it once,” he said. Each of the Sun Dip flavors offers a special blend of spices. Flavors include original, sun dried tomato and basil, and jalapeno cilantro. Unlike hummus, which spoils rapidly, Sun Dip has a long shelf life, and can last for seven months in the fridge.

Shockey’s original career, which was serving as an EMT in Orange County. “I never even ate healthily, and didn’t know about what was considered good for me,” he said. “Once we got into this business, we began to consider what is good, clean eating.” Since Shockey and McClellan built their product from the ground up, it is truly a wonder to them to see how much their business has grown. “People are always surprised to see that we created this all by

REAL ESTATE AND HOME & GARDEN

Additions to Palomares Park sculpture garden continue FALLBROOK – Co-founder of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy Vince Ross chuckled as he recalled a day in late 2002. He and his late wife Joy flew to Seattle to pick up a life-sized bronze sculpture of a mountain lion at the studio of artist Duncan McKiernan, a good friend of local artist Les Perhacs. “The mountain lion was to be the first sculpture to be installed at the Palomares Sculpture Garden,

devoted to paying tribute to the wildlife in our region,” said Ross. “To avoid traveling back to Fallbrook in a truck, we rented a van and squeezed in the five-foot long sculpture, but with limited room.” Ross said that the lion was wrapped in a blanket, except the head had to fit in between the two front bucket seats to ride in the car with us

““On our way back to Fallbrook, we stopped for gas in Oregon. Customarily, gas station attendants up there are required to work the service area pumping gas. When the only guy on duty got to our car, he froze at the sight of the realistic beast. Only after much coaxing would he fill our tank.” Today, “Tukwut,” the local Native American word for big cat and McKiernan’s name for the

The newest addition to Palomares Sculpture park is “The Chase,” by Les Perhacs. It is a three-piece unit of a fox chasing two rabbits, donated by Linda and Otis Heald in late 2013.

Permanently mounted on a rock in the center of the garden to look like it stalks its next meal, “Tukwut” is strategically placed among shrubs, trees and grasses to replicate native habitats. The most recently installed sculpture is by Les Perhacs. Named “The Chase,” it is a threepiece unit of a fox chasing two rabbits. Donated by Linda and Otis Heald in late 2013, “The Chase” sits at the front of the sculpture garden. Some sculptures, like “Family Gathering,” a depiction of a family of California quail, were originally located in Fallbrook as part of the Art in Public Places division of the Fallbrook Village Association. “Family Gathering” was relocated to the Palomares Park in 2004. According to Fallbrook Land Conservancy chairman Gary Beeler, “Plaques placed near each of the seven sculptures and among

the native plants identify the artist and donors. Brick tiles lining the pathways honor the scores of private parties, local companies and other non-profit organizations who have generously paved the way for development and maintenance of the park.” Beeler said that in early May 2015, 12 more tiles, signifying donations of $300 or more to the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, will be placed along the pathway that enters and winds through the sculpture garden at Palomares Park. In addition to Palomares Park and adjacent Palomares House, the non-profit Fallbrook Land Conservancy operates and maintains more than 2,000 acres of land within 11 local preserves in North San Diego County. While some of them are open to the public year-round as part of a network of 20 miles of trails and parks, other parcels are closed and set aside as mitigation land and wildlife habitats for endangered species.

mind, and consider planting drought-tolerant trees and vegetation on your property. Take the time to choose the planting site as carefully as you chose the tree. Remember to always plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” for the best chance of success. Call Underground Service Alert at 8-1-1 to mark out underground utility lines two days before digging. With just one call, homeowners can have their underground cable, water and energy lines marked out for free. Failing to do this could result in serious injury or death. Don’t plant shrubs directly in front of utility boxes, or padmounted (box) transformers. Allow room for doors to swing open when shrubs are fully grown.

The law requires that 8 feet in front of and 2 feet on the other three sides of the transformer must be clear. Contact a local arborist, parks department, or public works department to find out whether the county has guidelines for planting trees, and whether a permit is required for planting trees in parkways or public areas. As part of SDG&E’s “Right Tree, Right Place” program, customers may be eligible for a free tree removal and replacement for incompatible trees that are currently being pruned under the electrical high voltage lines. Customers can call 800-411SDGE or visit sdge.com/safety to learn more about the “Right Tree, Right Place” program.

Sewage spill in Fallbrook impacts Ostrich Creek

FALLBROOK - An estimated 17,100 gallon sewage spill occurred Sunday, April 24 from a lift station force main on the 2800 block of Overland Trail in Fallbrook. The cause of the spill was a ruptured force main which started at approximately 7 a.m. and ended at 8:40 a.m. when crews from Fallbrook Public Utility District shut down the pump station. About 200 gallons were recovered, but 16,900 gallons of sewage flowed into Ostrich Creek from the 2800 block of Overland Trail near the lift station. Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted at public access points along Ostrich Creek and will remain in place until samples confirm that water is no longer impacted.

measuring 4’ wide by 8’ long and just over 1’ high, are available. The raised beds provide plenty of room to for residents to get their hands dirty and plant fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Organic gardening methods are encouraged and participants will have the opportunity to meet other gardening enthusiasts. Garden beds can be leased for

Car club donations aid local students FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Vintage Car Club donates every month throughout the year to many worthy causes in Fallbrook. This time they were especially proud to donate to the Fallbrook High School Band Boosters to help support all members of the Fallbrook High School instrumental program, including marching band, color guard, symphonic, concert and wind ensemble classes. The donation will help prepare them for their planned march in the 2016 London New Year’s Day Parade. They are hoping to take 60 students for this event on Jan. 1. The car club made a second donation in April to REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program and its Todd Plischke Scholarship Fund. Jan and Denise Plischke have been members of the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club for many years. Their son Todd was a delightful young man who, despite his handicaps, was active in most of the car club activities. Todd passed away on Nov. 10, 2010 and a scholarship fund was started by Jan and Denise in his memory. This scholarship provides funds for the disadvantaged of all ages to attend and benefit from the therapy offered by the REINS organization. Fallbrook residents named to Dean’s list at Biola University LA MIRADA – The following Fallbrook residents were among 1,666 students named to Biola University’s fall 2014 Dean’s List for academic excellence: Caitlin Foster, Kendall Shurance, Justin Taylor, Michelle Verougstraete and Vanya Wright. Biola students are placed on the Dean’s List to honor those with a grade point average of 3.6 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more credit units and whose cumulative grade point average is at least a 3.2. This past fall, 38 percent of Biola students achieved this academic goal. “Inclusion on the Biola Dean’s List is an indication that this student is performing exceptionally well in a rigorous academic program,” said vice provost for academic administration, Patricia Pike. “Our Dean’s List students are bright, motivated, engaged, competent, and personable. They are already demonstrating the characteristics of success that results from applied intelligence and that will support future endeavors in society, community, career, and family life.” Biola’s grade point average requirement for the Dean’s List is one of the highest among Southern California Christian Universities.

Fallbrook golfers take the league lead Warriors stride ahead in Valley League with one-stroke win over Bulldogs

Fallbrook’s Brad Cain tees off at the second hole during the game against Valley Center. He shot a 39 as Fallbrook won the match on Aril 21. Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent The two Valley League boys golf teams which were undefeated in league play met April 14 at the Pala Mesa course, where Fallbrook High School gained the league lead with a 203-204 victory over Ramona. “That was a big win,” said Fallbrook High School coach Steve Jorde. In high school golf, six players from each team play a nine-hole round. The scores of the top five players are added to determine the team score and the high score is discarded. Fallbrook senior Ian Mackenzie completed his nine holes in 38 strokes to lead the Fallbrook golfers. “I tried to play as consistently as possible,” Mackenzie said. “I kind of had to step up to the challenge.” Fallbrook sophomore Jake Guy took 40 shots. Scores of 41 were recorded by freshman Sebastian Winfield and junior Patrick Milton. The other two golfers, senior Brad Cain and junior Bobby Sneller, each had 43-stroke rounds so the second 43 was thrown out but the discarded score wasn’t attributed to either golfer. “We were consistent,” Jorde said. “I’m very happy with the win that we had,” Mackenzie said. Ramona’s top score was 35, but one of the Bulldogs shot a 49 and another shot a 48 and the 48-stroke score was included in the Bulldogs’ total. “That hurt them a little bit,” Jorde said. “We do have a lot more talent to

offer,” Mackenzie said. Fallbrook and Ramona will close out the dual meet portion of the season April 30 at the San Vicente course in Ramona. “They’re a very good team, so it will be a good match when we go back to their place,” Jorde said. “They probably won’t lose another league match until then, so it will be a real big one for us.” The Warriors began Valley League play April 2 on the par-35 Pauma Valley Country Club course and returned home with a 186-215 win over Valley Center. “That was a good day,” Jorde said. “186 is a great score.” Sneller led the Warriors with a score of 35, Milton shot a 36, Cain had a 37-stroke round, Winfield took 37 strokes, and Mackenzie had a score of 41. “As a total group all seven on any given day, they can all be number one. They play really well as a team,” Jorde said. “They push each other. It’s a great group to be with.” The other member of the Warrior varsity is junior Christian Murphy. The home course of Mission Vista High School is on Camp Pendleton; Fallbrook’s April 6 match there ended as a 208-244 Warriors victory. Fallbrook hosted Orange Glen on April 9 at Pala Mesa; the Warriors prevailed by a 202-251 score. The win over Ramona gave Fallbrook an 11-1 overall record along with a 4-0 league statistic. “We’re looking forward to the second half of the league season,” Jorde said. Versatility aids Warrior boys in track and field league opener Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent

An individual athlete in a high school track and field meet is allowed to compete in up to four events. Fallbrook High School head coach Marco Arias along with the Warrior team as a whole took advantage of that versatility April 9 when the Warriors opened Valley League competition with a home dual meet against Orange Glen and defeated the Patriots by an 82-53 score. “A lot of the guys are working their way to becoming multiple event guys,” Arias said. “They are moving up to the challenge.” A high school meet begins with the 4x100 relay. Oscar Ruvalcaba normally participates in that event for Fallbrook but was ill. Austin Williams has earned points for Fallbrook in the shot put and discus but is also on the Warriors’ football team, and some of the Warrior runners who also play football recommended that Williams be used as Ruvalcaba’s replacement. “He’s been asking to run the 100. He’s quite an athlete, but we needed him up top,” Arias said.

“Up top” refers to the throwing circle; the timing of the events gave Williams an extremely short period between the end of the 4x100 and the start of the shot put throw. The absence of Ruvalcaba gave Arias no other option. “He went down and helped the relay team anchor that victory,” Arias said. Roberto Ramirez, Matt Kinzie, Jack Jones, and Williams won the 4x100 with a hand-held time of 45.0 seconds. Williams then made the trip to the shot put circle and won that event with a throw of 41’1”. Jason Nguyen threw the shot put 37’4” to give the Warriors a third-place point. Nguyen won the discus throw with a toss of 114’0”; Williams was third at 106’6”. Only the first relay runner begins on the starting block; the other three take the baton from a standing position. The 100-meter dash requires a starting technique as well as sprinting and finishing techniques. Jones won that event in 11.2 seconds and Kinzie finished second at 11.4 seconds. Freshman Julian Arteaga ran his first varsity race and was third with a time of

11.7 seconds. Arias expects Arteaga to be part of the Warriors’ future. “We just didn’t know he was going to blossom this season,” Arias said. “He’s been growing leaps and bounds on a weekly basis.” Arias will also be evaluating the 2015 future of Christian Contreras, who won the junior varsity 100-meter race with a time of 11.6 seconds. For individual events, five points are given to the school with the first-place time or distance, three points are awarded for second place, and the third-place mark is worth one point. Roberto Ramirez gave Fallbrook five points with a long jump of 20 feet 11 1/2 inches, which set a personal record. Ramirez also sought to help the team in the 300-meter hurdles. Fallbrook’s John Pease won that race in 43.1 seconds and Jack Grantham placed third with a time of 45.9 seconds. Ramirez, who had never previously run a hurdles race and had practiced for approximately 15 minutes, was challenging Pease for the lead before hitting the sixth and seventh hurdles. He fell both times but got back up and had a time of 46.9 seconds not including the penalties for knocking over the hurdles. “He’s phenomenal,” Arias said of Ramirez. “Anything we put him

Andy Iniesta leaps off the mark in the long jump at the track meet at Fallbrook’s field on April 23. He finished third in the event. in, he’s going to excel in. He’s quite talented.” Pease also won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.9 seconds. Elijah Roque won two distance races for Fallbrook, completing the 800-meter event in 2:06.1 and the 1,600-meter run in 4:37.9. Sam Comerford gave Fallbrook secondplace points in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:49.9. Arias isn’t concerned that the Warriors’ 1,600-meter times were slower than normal, as the athletes were running into a headwind while on the backstretch. “Eli ran what he needed to do,” Arias said of Roque’s winning time. The Warriors took the top two 1,600-meter positions March 26 at Mission Hills; Roque had a time of 4:34.0 and Comerford completed the race in 4:40.2. Roque had a second-place time of 2:00.0 in the 800-meter race at Mission Hills. Pease was running into a headwind at Mission Hills when he won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 43.8 seconds. The Grizzlies won that meet by a 90-45 score. On March 28, Roque ran the 800-meter race at the Sundevil

Invitational meet at Mount Carmel High School and finished 13th with a personal record of 1:59.2. Comerford won the 3,200-meter event April 9 in 10:54.5 with Wade Leehey posting the third-place time of 11:29.3. Elijah Zepeda cleared 11’0” to win the pole vault with Anthony Sepulveda placing third at 10’0”. Mikey Sykes won the high jump with a height of 6’0”. In the 400-meter race, Orange Glen’s Oscar Palomares and Fallbrook’s Sierra Arteaga both had times of 52.0 seconds; the race was decided on the lean with Palomares taking first place and Arteaga placing second. Palomares also won the 200yard dash, posting a time of 23.2 seconds, but Jones was second at 23.7 seconds and Kinzie had the third-place time of 23.8 seconds while Julian Arteaga finished fourth 24.3 seconds after the race began. Andy Iniesta had a triple jump of 37 feet 9 1/2 inches for second place. “It’s always nice to start off league with a win,” Arias said. Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent Fallbrook High School’s girls track and field team opened Valley League competition April 9 with an 87-46 home win over Orange Glen. The highlights included the Warriors sweeping the three scoring positions in the 1,600-meter run and in the pole vault. “Any time you can get a sweep it’s a good thing,” said Fallbrook head coach Troy Hamlin. “We need as many as we can get.” The Warriors also took first and second in seven of the other 12 individual events. The results of each individual event provide five team points for first place, three points for second place, and one point for third. Each of the two relay races gives all five points to the winner. Although only the top three positions are scored, a school is allocated four lanes in each individual race. Fallbrook took the top four positions in the 1,600-meter run. Andrea Vela won the race in 5:44.1; Kiera Donoghue completed the metric mile in 5:57.7; freshman Jennifer Vizzuett earned her first varsity point with a time of 6:02.1; and freshman Giselle Rivera had a 6:03.6 showing in her first varsity race. Belle Banta cleared 7’6” to win the pole vault. Mikala Tidd had a height of 7’0” and Olivia Gonzalez was third at 6’0”. A height of 6’0” was also obtained by Fallbrook’s Mariana Macebo in the junior varsity portion of the meet.

Vela also took first place in the 800-meter race 2:37.8 after the starter’s gun was fired. Vizzuett added to her varsity scoring history with a second-place time of 2:41.7. Donoghue won the 3,200-meter race in 13:36.1. Rivera earned her first varsity points in that event by finishing second with a time of 13:53.5. Fallbrook took first and second in both hurdles races. In the 100-meter hurdles, Emily Larson had a winning time of 17.2 seconds and Hannah French placed second at 17.8 seconds. French won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.1 seconds. “Very good time for Hannah,” Hamlin said. Natalie Dudley was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a hand-held time personal record of 52.4 seconds. “It was pretty close between Hannah and Natalie,” Hamlin said. In the junior varsity 300-meter hurdles race, sophomore Bergen Banta set a personal record of 52.7 seconds. During Fallbrook’s 89-43 loss March 26 at Mission Hills, the Warriors swept the 300-meter hurdles with French running the race in 52.2 seconds, Dudley placing second at 54.3 seconds, and Larson posting the third-place time of 57.2 seconds. Monique Gonzalez won the 100-meter dash against Orange Glen with a time of 13.1 seconds.

Larson’s time of 13.4 seconds gave her second place and a hand-held personal record. “Good showing for Fallbrook 100-meter runners,” Hamlin said. Gonzalez also won the long jump with a distance of 15 feet 3 1/2 inches. Fallbrook’s Alex Danso was second in that event at 14 feet 9 1/2 inches. Danso had a triple jump of 31 feet 8 1/2 inches for first place in that event with Gonzalez placing second at 30 feet 10 1/2 inches. Because the relay races give points for the winner only, Gonzalez was deprived of placing in four events against Orange Glen. Dudley, Gonzalez, Larson, and junior Katherine Regotti placed second in the 4x100 race. That event will be the only one of the season for Regotti, who had recovered from arthroscopic surgery on one knee before undergoing such surgery on her other knee. Dudley finished second in the 400-meter race by completing her lap in 1:06.0. Larson had a secondplace time of 29.5 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Anna Curran threw the shot put 26’2” for second place. A 75’1” discus throw gave Tatiana Arias third place and a personal record. To comment on this story online, visit www.thevillagenews.com.

Five-run inning gives Warriors win in Valley League opener Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent

F a l l b r o o k H i g h S c h o o l ’s baseball team opened Valley League competition April 13 with a 9-4 home win over Ramona. The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after the Bulldogs scored four times in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. “I’m pleased. Very proud of the kids for sure,” said Fallbrook coach Patrick Walker.

Andy White threw a complete game for the Warriors. He shut out the Bulldogs for the first four innings before Ramona erased Fallbrook’s 4-0 lead with the four runs in the top of the fifth. That seemingly gave the Bulldogs the momentum. “We just took it right back,” Walker said. “Bouncing right back after they tied it 4-4 to score five was huge.” White held Ramona scoreless for the final two innings. Fallbrook has a 13-player roster, and two players were removed due

to potential injury during the game against Ramona. That forced some Warriors to field at other-thannormal positions. “The kids will just play anywhere and they just get it done,” Walker said. Reese Berberet had hits in all four at-bats against Ramona and drove in one run. Marc Henning had two hits in three at-bats and drove in two teammates. Cedric Brown and Bryson Spagnuolo each had a hit in three at-bats with two runs batted in. “We told the kids after the

game how excited we were that they were able to bounce back,” Walker said. In addition to a 1-0 Valley League record, the victory in the league opener gave Fallbrook an overall statistic of 10-5. The Warriors preceded the game against Ramona with a 13-1 win over Torrey Pines and a 23-6 victory against Classical Academy. “That’s three in a row for us and we’re scoring runs,” Walker said. Fallbrook entered league play ranked second among the 19 CIF

San Diego Section teams which are in Division III for playoff purposes. “That’s a big deal for us,” Walker said. Power rankings are the primary factor in selection and seeding for the CIF playoffs. The Division III playoffs will include 12 teams. “We have a long way to go,” Walker said. To comment on this story online, visit www.thevillagenews.com.

Bonsall High School admitted to CIF Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent

The CIF Board of Managers approved CIF San Diego Section membership for Bonsall High School. The April 22 vote to admit Bonsall High School to the CIF effective Aug. 10 (the first permissible day of practice for 2015-16 fall sports other than football, which Bonsall High School will not have) was unanimous. “We’re excited to have them as a member and fully expect them to be competitive right away and be a good member,” said CIF commissioner Jerry Schniepp. Bonsall High School opened in August 2014 and currently only has ninth-grade students. The high school will expand by one grade a year until it has students of all four high school grades starting

in 2017-18. The application for CIF membership listed a current enrollment of 64 students and expected enrollments of 164 students in 2015-16, 400 students in 2017-18, and 600 students in 2019-20. The application also listed Joseph Gora as the athletic director and stated that the goals of the school’s athletic program will be to provide an athletic program which meets the expressed needs, interest, and abilities of the students consistent with available facilities, equipment, and qualified staff, to provide equal opportunities for all students, to provide an athletic program which will promote the physical well-being and desirable attitudes in leadership and sportsmanship for all stakeholders, to provide an athletic program which is an integral part of the educational program, and to provide an

athletic program which satisfies the competitive and recreational needs of the students. The application includes the CIF athletic programs expected to be offered during the first year. According to the application, Bonsall High School plans to field boys and girls cross-country, girls and boys golf, girls and boys tennis, girls volleyball, and boys and girls soccer during 2015-16, when the school would have ninth-grade and tenth-grade students. The CIF requires that the athletic program be genderbalanced for co-ed schools and that sports be offered during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Golf, tennis, and volleyball are fall sports for girls and spring sports for boys, cross-country is a fall sport, and soccer is a winter sport. The Jan. 21 Board of Managers

meeting included a first reading for the application; although no vote was taken no Board of Managers members voiced any concerns. On March 11, the CIF Coordinating Council voted 37-0 to recommend approval of CIF membership for Bonsall High School. Schniepp and assistant commissioner John Labeta also recommended admission to the CIF San Diego Section. “We think they’re ready,” Schniepp said. Bonsall High School is currently operating on the Sullivan Middle School campus, although the Bonsall Unified School District currently plans to build a separate high school on the Gird Road property it owns. The existing Sullivan Middle School gymnasium is suitable for volleyball but is too small for a regulation-size basketball court. A track is located on the upper field. Fallbrook High School’s softball team won one of its first nine games this year. After an April 21 victory over Oceanside, the Warriors had won two of their first three Valley League contests and had an overall record of 6-14. “We feel like we’re kind of hitting our stride now in league,” said Fallbrook co-coach Shannon Koran. Fallbrook’s league-opening

loss April 9 at Valley Center was followed by a win April 14 at Mission Vista and the April 21 home triumph. “We’re getting better every single day, and that’s what’s important right now,” said Fallbrook co-coach Patti Drew. “We’re hoping to keep getting better and make it to the playoffs at the end of the season.” Scrimmages do not count towards season records, but catcher Morgan Pilbin sprained her ankle during a pre-season scrimmage against San

Marcos and was unavailable for games which counted in the overall season. “We had to change our entire lineup when she was out,” Koran said. Pilbin returned to action with an at-bat March 26 against Granite Hills and played her first full game during the Spring Jamboree tournament in Las Vegas. The Warriors were 4-6 in their first 10 games following Pilbin’s return – and that includes the 12-0 loss to Granite Hills. “Having Morgan back has really changed the dynamic of our team,” Koran said. Pilbin, a four-year varsity player, was the team’s starting catcher in 2014 and was in right field in 2013 when Brittni Arena was Fallbrook’s backstop. The 2014 right fielder, current senior Veronica Lowry, is not playing this year due to her academic quests. Outfielder Jenna Murphy and third baseman Juliana Fadaol are now playing for other high school teams. The Warriors had three seniors in 2014: shortstop Hailey Drew and first baseman Lauren Hirota were both four-year starters and Emily Casillas played third base. “We have a lot of new faces this season,” Patti Drew said. “It’s kind of been a work in progress, but we’re coming along.” Pilbin was batting .522 overall after the April 21 victory including .526 for the three league games. Fourth-year starter Brooke Koran, who is Fallbrook’s pitcher, was hitting .439 at the plate including .538 in league and had two nonleague home runs and eight runs batted in, including two during league competition. Fallbrook has moved to the Valley League from the Avocado West

League. “It’s a good place for us to be in right now,” Drew said. “It’s a league that we can definitely compete in and win some games in, and that’s good for us.” The Warriors were 3-5 in Avocado West League competition last year; two scheduled league games were cancelled due to the May fires. “I like it a lot,” Shannon Koran said of the Valley League. “The way that the kids we have now are responding, we feel like we’re in a really good spot.” Valley Center defeated Fallbrook by a 7-0 margin. “It wasn’t one of our better games,” Drew said. Shannon Koran and Patti Drew were Shannon Fitzgerald and Patti Pearson when they graduated from Fallbrook High School in 1988. The Warrior athletes they knew included 1987 graduate Bill Dunckel, who is now Valley Center’s coach. Dunckel married Koran’s college roommate, and their daughter plays on the San Diego Rebels club team Koran and Drew coach as does Valley Center sophomore Shelby Smith, who started the game against Fallbrook on the mound and allowed three hits in six innings. “I’m always worried about Valley Center. Bill is a very good coach and he gets the most out of his players,” Koran said. The Jaguars will travel to Fallbrook for a May 5 game. “We’re looking to get them back at our place,” Koran said. The 8-0 win over Mission Vista was Fallbrook’s second shutout victory of the season and matched the March 14 score against Santana in the Cougar Classic tournament. “We played really good defense,” Koran said. “No matter who you play if you can

get a shutout that’s a tribute to the whole team.” Brooke Koran had 10 strikeouts against the Timberwolves. First baseman Britt Cox, a junior who is in her first year as a varsity player, had four hits in four at-bats. “Kind of her breakout game,” Shannon Koran said. “We played well both offensively and defensively and we had some timely hitting,” Drew said. “It always helps to hit all the way through the lineup.” F a l l b r o o k ’s v i c t o r y o v e r Oceanside was by a 10-1 score. “Two back-to-back games really good defense,” Koran said. “We struggled a little bit with the pitching early in the game.” Six Warriors touched home plate in the bottom of the sixth. “The bottom of the order stepped up in the sixth inning,” Koran said. The game included Pilbin making a diving catch on a foul pop-up behind the plate. “We had a couple of really good defensive plays,” Koran said. “It was a good overall team victory. We played really good defense. Brooke pitched well and our hitters came alive about the middle of the game and we were able to put some runs on the board to win,” Drew said. grass field is large enough for a regulation soccer field; that field also has backstops for baseball or softball should Bonsall High School choose to add those sports in the future. A field surrounding a small dirt track can be used for soccer practices. An outside concrete area includes approximately a dozen basketball courts, and the school district is considering the conversion of some of that area into tennis courts. Bonsall High School has been in contact with the Pala Mesa Resort regarding the possibility of using the Pala Mesa golf course for practices and home matches. Bonsall High School will join the Frontier Conference, which will assign the school to one of its leagues, for 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Fallbrook motorcyclist has fatal accident in Bonsall Debbie Ramsey Managing Editor

A Fallbrook man lost his life in a solo motorcycle crash Monday night, April 27, in Bonsall. Westley Anthony Roberts, 45, was riding his 2010 Victory Cross Country motorcycle at about 7:53 p.m. westbound on Camino del Rey

when the accident happened. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner, Roberts was driving at a high rate of speed and had passed three other motorists in his lane as he approached the intersection of Camino Del Cielo. Authorities said Roberts then lost control of his motorcycle and was ejected. Robert’s body struck a

mail box and a palm tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the California Highway Patrol, no other vehicles were involved in the collision and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor. The CHP continues to investigate the incident.
