The County of San Diego’s 2014-15 Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnerships, Emergency Shelter Grant, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS annual funding plan will include money for sidewalk improvements at Ammunition Road and Alturas Road. A 5-0 vote April 15 by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors allocated $207,375 for sidewalk improvements including curbs, gutters, and pedestrian ramps at that intersection. The sidewalks will provide connectivity for pedestrians accessing nearby neighborhood services, schools, and public transportation. “There is a lot of pedestrian and vehicle traffic near the Naval Weapons Station and the elementary

When the Fallbrook Historical Society and San Diego County Farm Bureau present “A Salute to Agriculture: 100 Years of Agriculture in San Diego” on Saturday, May 10 in Fallbrook, not only will unique information about the rich history of agriculture in this area be shared, but local families with multiple generations involved in the agriculture industry here will be honored. The event, free and open to the public, will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historical society’s museum complex, located at 1730 Hill Ave. (Rocky Crest Road at Hill Ave.). It will include a broad collection of agricultural artifacts and historical photos on display. Informative displays are also being provided by Mission Resource Conservation District and the University of Calif. Cooperative Agricultural Extension.

A thief made off with 33 iPad computers over Easter weekend at Fallbrook High School. According to Wil Hatcher, chief business officer for Fallbrook Union High School District, workers discovered the loss on Sunday (Easter) morning, April 20 when

the Bob Burton Performing Arts Center (PAC) was being prepared for a church that rents the space for services. “At about 5:30 a.m. a worker discovered the power was off inside the PAC and that a door had been broken into,” said Hatcher. “Inside it was obvious that an iPad cart had been opened and the 33 computers inside had been taken out of it. The
worker then found that the power switch had been turned off to the PAC; the burglar probably figured that would disable the alarm.” The Sheriff’s Dept. was contacted at that point.

Cunningham elected to SSDA executive committee Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent Bonsall school district superintendent Justin Cunningham was elected to the Small School Districts’ Association executive committee April 11. Cunningham replaces retiring Julian Union Elementary School District superintendent Kevin Ogden on the 14-member executive committee. “It’s a great opportunity to help small districts throughout the state,” Cunningham said. “It definitely is a great opportunity to better serve Bonsall.” The Small School Districts’ Association annual conference took place April 9-11 in Sacramento. “The Small School Districts’ Association has done a wonderful job of supporting small districts,” Cunningham said.
The Small School Districts’ Association was founded in 1983. “Most districts in the state are small,” Cunningham said. In addition to providing information and other assistance to small school districts, the organization’s legislative advocacy activities ensure that waivers, exemptions, and other policies reflect the special circumstances of the state’s smaller school districts. “It’s a different world in small districts,” Cunningham said. The 14 executive committee members include one founder and two other emeritus members along with the members elected at the association’s meetings. “They had asked me to consider it,” Cunningham said. “I think it’s a great opportunity to better serve my community.” The executive committee meets four times each year. The committee will focus on the association’s
priorities and directions for the upcoming year at its July meeting. “I’m looking forward to his leadership. He’s going to bring some strengths and some knowledge to the board,” said Small School Districts’ Association executive director Debra Pearson, who served on the association’s executive committee when she was the superintendent of the Browns (Sutter County) and Wheatland (Yuba County) elementary school districts. Cunningham is the only executive committee member from San Diego County. Prior to becoming the Bonsall Union School District superintendent in 2008, he spent 19 years with the San Diego County Office of Education as the director of small school district services. He was the principal and superintendent of the South Fork Union School District in Weldon, which is in Kern County, prior to the San Diego

a small swelling at the base of the bloom) for the first three weeks. • Only allow three to four pumpkins per vine to get the biggest and best. • Optional: Carve the grower’s name or initials in the pumpkin when they are small and it will grow with the pumpkin. Daughters of Norway to learn about spinning wool FALLBROOK – Laurel Beale is coming to the next meeting of the Daughters of Norway to demonstrate spinning sheep wool and other fiber. She has been spinning her own wool for 15 years. Beale is bringing her portable spinning wheel and will offer those in attendance a chance to try out spinning. She has also
been knitting for about 50 years and will be bringing articles that she has woven and knit. The Daughters of Norway, Hulda Garborg Lodge #49, will hold their next meeting on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. Following the program, there will be a potluck lunch at noon and a business meeting at 12:45 p.m.

“Skulking Roadrunner” by Gerald Tietje FALLBROOK – The Reflections of Nature wildlife art show will celebrate its 21st year in Fallbrook over the weekend of May 3 and 4. “The Fallbrook Art Center is pleased to welcome 21 nationally recognized artists from across the US and UK who bring their art and stories of their global travel in pursuit of the wildlife they portray in their work,” said Mary Perhacs, executive director. Founded by award-winning Fallbrook artist and nature conservationist Gamini Ratnavira, the Reflections of Nature art event showcases the wonderful world of the wild and reminds us of the importance of preserving its beauty. Nature’s diversity is evident in the art presented by artists working in a broad range of mediums and disciplines including plein air to portray the world’s wildlife and the landscapes that sustain
them. While many of the artists have been with the show since its inception, the 2014 show welcomes nine for the first time including Clare Shaughnessy who lives in the U.K. The Wildlife/Nature Art Show will have an opening reception on Friday, May 2 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Over 300 Fallbrook children and teens will have to return to school next fall without the backpacks and school supplies they need for academic success. To assist their families, all of whom are registered with the Fallbrook Food Pantry, a Back-to-School Backpack Project was launched last year by St. John’s Episcopal Church to provide new backpacks filled with ring binders, paper, dictionaries, calculators, pens, pencils, and an age-appropriate book for 30 students. This year we want to expand the program to supply backpacks for all of those 300 students, so we’re inviting other churches and service organizations to join us in this important and worthwhile project. Big Oak Ranch Rd. intersection needs help I have written to Darrell Issa again to protest about the heavy traffic on South Mission Road (increase in population) – and the narrow entry at the intersection of Big Oak Ranch Rd. and the obstacle of a hill on the south, making it a hazard to turn out and southbound towards Bonsall. It is also risky to turn right (northbound) on Mission since we cannot see the fast-moving cars (due to hill) to make safe entry into the roadway. We have now had 19 accidents at that spot. I will be 90 years old on May 12
Re: “Pancake Breakfast & Spring Egg Hunt April 19” [Village News, 4/17/14] What in the world is a “spring bunny”? Is it a bunny that jumps really high? And what about “spring eggs”? I know that duck eggs produce ducks, chicken eggs produce chickens, etc., so do spring eggs produce springs? I guess I am being facetious, but I can’t help wondering how this holiday, formally known as Easter, commemorating the most important event in Christianity, namely the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, has turned into a “spring” event. Help us save PAT program The Mike Choate Center PTA is calling out to the community of Fallbrook in our efforts to save the PAT (parents as teachers) Program. This wonderful program is for children ages 0 to 5 and has been active in Fallbrook for over 15 years. The program is bilingual and includes learning through music and movement as well as arts and crafts, story time, and of course, outdoor play. Fallbrook Elementary School District has communicated that our program is being cut from their budget for the upcoming school year. We are looking for concerned parents, neighbors, community members and friends to help us in finding funding to keep this program alive. We are looking for help to possibly obtain grants from state/government agencies, as well as possibly going back to the school district board to see if they can possibly fund a portion of the program if we are unable to obtain enough grant money for funding. We have been told that we need to raise approximately $70,000 to run the program for the 2014-2015 school year. Any information/help is appreciated. Local growers and farmers have donated enticing raffle items for the event which will feature two speakers. According to organizers, Eric Larson, executive director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau, will present a slide presentation entitled “Celebrating 100 Years of Agriculture in San Diego County.” Janet Silva Kister, co-owner of Sunlet Nurseries, will speak on the topic of the Fallbrook agricultural perspective. Organizers said the program will conclude with “a tribute to all our farmers and growers for their dedication and commitment to their industry.” Part of that “salute” will include the recognition of the multi-

generational, local families who make agriculture their life. “The number of extended families – both by generation and by marriage – who remain dedicated to agriculture is particularly pronounced in Fallbrook,” said Anne Burdick of the Fallbrook Historical Society. “As an example of fathers and sons in agriculture in Fallbrook, we have the Lucy family and the Hofshi family. Bob Lucy began working in the avocado industry right after graduation from college and almost 20 years later, in 1989, he partnered with Bob Siemer and Rueben Hofshi to buy Del Rey Avocado Company. The three partners are still thriving in business together today. And Bob has since been joined by both his sons – Patrick, in 2005, and more

Sons Eli and Danny now own and operate Eli’s Farm Stand on East Mission Road. Eli is the farming end of the business and Danny handles public relations and home deliveries. Cristina Machado, the primary sales force at Eli’s stand, is also connected to the Hofshi family through the Del Rey Avocado Company and through her family’s land ownership. As an amazing example of the intricate web of interconnections, Cristina’s family once owned the Hofshi’s land in De Luz through an original Spanish land grant and she got her first job at Del Rey Avocado. It is indeed a very small world!” As a result of the research done for this special event, the historical society is now developing an entire collection of stories related to multi-generational and extended families in agriculture in Fallbrook. “There will be a public announcement when the display is ready for public viewing,” said Burdick.

The Fallbrook sidewalk project was one of two CDBG allocations to Horn’s district; the other was

Nine projects totaling $1,425,413 were relegated to the alternative list. One of those alternative projects sought $45,000 for the right-of-way acquisition phase for approximately 500 feet of sidewalk on Clemmens Lane between South Mission Road and Old Stage Road.
“So we would have to make up the cost differential and we also have a $1,000 deductible on our insurance policy,” said Hatcher. Fallbrook High Principal Rod King said the iPads were used for a math class. “Using iPads is a way to peak students’ interest in subjects; this most definitely takes the element of technology out of that class until we can decide what to replace them with,” said King. “The teacher will return to the white board and do more group work.”
King said they will “do our best to expedite the matter to see how quickly we can replace the technology element for that class.” “In the meantime, we have other devices that we can make available to this teacher,” he said. “We will also be consulting with the teacher to see what the best replacement might be at this time. Health Alcoholism is not exclusive to men SAN DIEGO COUNTY – In late 2013, television journalist Elizabeth Vargas, known for her work on the television news magazine “20/20,” as well as her role as anchor of ABC’s “World News Tonight,” made headlines of her own when she left that network’s popular morning show to seek treatment for alcoholism. The news came as a shock to many viewers, not only because Vargas was a successful professional who had risen to the top of her field but also because few people associate alcoholism with women. While the stereotype of an alcoholic may suggest an old man of failing health, women, even young women, can suffer from alcoholism. In a 2013 radio interview with National Public Radio, author Ann Dowsett Johnston discussed her own alcoholism and whether or not today’s young women are drinking as much as young men. Johnston noted that in her research for her book, “Drink” (Harper Wave), she noticed that women in the United Kingdom were dying of late-stage liver disease (often associated with old men) as early as their late 20s. She also said American female college students are consuming comparable amounts of alcohol as male students, which may be leading them down a path to alcoholism after college. Though excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to men
and women alike, women who consume comparable amounts of

Food pantry helps hungry students at Fallbrook Street School
FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Hospital will offer a four-class series diabetes education program each Tuesday in June beginning on June 3 and ending June 24. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Instructors include the following from Fallbrook Hospital: Maggie Walters, MS, RD, CDE, clinical dietician and diabetes educator; Jennifer Paull, DPT, director of rehab services, and David Dirig, RPh, PhD, director of pharmacy services. The program is designed to provide information, promote skill development and encourage goal setting. The cost for the entire series is $10, with no charge for Senior Circle members (persons over age 50). It is open to the public and will be held in Conference Room B at Fallbrook Hospital. FALLBROOK – Over 125 families at Fallbrook Street School have more nutritious food to eat lately thanks to a collective effort between school staff and the Fallbrook Food Pantry. Recognizing the need for healthy food to sustain many students over weekends, Fallbrook Food Pantry is collaborating with Fallbrook Street School in order to ensure that students have food to eat at home. “Eighty-six percent of our students are economically disadvantaged [and receive free

They didn’t care that their backpacks were so heavy; they felt like they were helping out their families. It was really great.”

A man resembling this sketch is wanted as a suspect in a sexual assault that took place in Fallbrook on April 23. 8:30 a.m. when a woman was jogging along a path in the vicinity of Lake Shore Park. She had her two-year-old child with her in a stroller. An unidentified male with a knife jumped out from behind some bushes, gained control, and sexually assaulted her. After several minutes, he fled on foot in an unknown direction.” Authorities have described the suspect as male in his mid-30s to 40s with a tan complexion (either Caucasian or Hispanic), dark brown or black closely-cropped hair, neatly trimmed full beard and mustache (beard cut high on neck), between 6-foot 1-inch and 6-foot 2-inches in height with a heavy build described as including a “beer belly.” At the time of the assault, he was wearing a black, short-sleeved t-shirt with holes in it and black work pants. The Sheriff’s Dept. has dedicated extra patrols to the area of the attack. Anyone with information on the identity and/or location of the suspect is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Dept. at (858) 565-5200 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this case.

Fallbrook High athlete Steven Branham, XX age XX, has just played his second year of international rugby. From April 4 through 18, he toured with the USA Rugby Boys High School All American U17 Team and played in competitions in Portugal and France. In 2013, Branham was chosen to play on the USA Rugby U16 team against Wales and England and secured a starting position on an older U18 team for a game in Argentina as well. During this year’s competitions,
Branham played two games in Portugal and one in France over the 13-day period as a starter. Branham scored the first try in the team’s second match against Portugal. While the USA team did not emerge victorious, they earned respect for their performance. France’s national team is ranked as one of the best in the world. FALLBROOK – During the summer, Tribe Basketball will be holding camps for boys and girls, grades two through nine. Fallbrook High School varsity boys and girls coaches and their players will provide instruction to young athletes. The camps will emphasize skill development in footwork, rebounding, shooting, defending, ball-handling, and passing. “This is a great opportunity for the youth to work with current and former players while having fun and learning basketball skills,” said coach John Kroeger. There will be two camps offered: Camp 1 – June 9 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon; and Camp 2 – June 16 to 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for one camp is $125; two camps, $200. The Longhorns took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke before Kuhn, Fast, Karasek, and Curnow closed out the meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay 3:36.89 after it started. Last year Fallbrook placed second in the Avocado West League. “We’re hoping to do well this year in league,” Richardson said. The 2013 Warriors had five seniors, including two-event league champion Sam McDaniels. “It’s essentially a rebuilding year for us,” Richardson said.

Fallbrook High School’s boys swim team won its league opener April 3 at home against Rancho Buena Vista. The Warriors took first-place points in eight of the 11 scored events and prevailed by a 104-64 margin. “It was a good win,” said Fallbrook coach Bill Richardson. “Had some good swims.” The Warriors also had a diving performance by junior Ricky Stephens. If only one school has a diver, the diving is not included in the team score although the diver can participate for CIF qualifying purposes (which includes a minimum participation threshold as well as a qualifying score). Stephens, who during Fallbrook’s March 20 home meet with Torrey Pines set the school record by scoring 250.80 points on six dives, accumulated 210.85 points at the April 3 meet. A school is allowed to enter up to three swimmers in each individual event and up to two quartets in each relay race. A high school meet begins with the 200-yard medley relay, and Fallbrook had the two fastest times. “That’s always a good indication of how the meet’s going to go,” Richardson said. Bobby Guerra, Eli Foli, Tristan Curnow, and Victor Haywood won the event with a time of 1:48.83. Connor Kuhn, John Tranner, Jacob Karasek, and Quinn Harrison finished in 1:52.65. The first individual event of a meet is the 200-yard freestyle race, and Fallbrook also had the top two finishes in that event. Toby Fast completed his eight laps in 1:55.19, which is a consideration time for the CIF meet, while Harrison posted a time of 1:58.15. Kuhn won the 200-yard individual medley race in 2:15.96. After the Longhorns earned the
first-place points in the 50-yard freestyle, the Warriors took the top two positions in the 100-yard butterfly. Guerra had an automatic qualifying time of 55.33 seconds while Karasek touched the finish line 1:03.46 after the starter’s gun was fired. Rancho Buena Vista had the top 100-yard freestyle time, but Chaz Sommer returned Fallbrook to first-place finish status with a time of 5:36.85 in the 500-yard freestyle. Guerra, Foli, Curnow, and Hayward then teamed up for the 200-yard freestyle relay and won that race in 1:35.66. Guerra returned to the pool for the 100yard backstroke, and although he didn’t improve his automatic qualifying time in that event his

Boys & Girls Club annual gala raises over $110,000 FALLBROOK – The “Viva Las Vegas” themed auction and dinner gala raised over $110,000 in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County’s programs and their 1600 youth members. The event was held on April 26 at Pala Resort Spa and Casino with presenting sponsor Donegan Burns Foundation. The gala was attended by over 230 guests from the Fallbrook community. Guests were treated to a silent and live auction, along with delicious food and fabulous entertainment. An Elvis impersonator was on hand for guests to have the chance to take a picture with “The King.” The band City Limits had the
dance floor packed all throughout the event’s after party. Exciting items, such as VIP tickets to the New York Yankees, a trip to Costa Rica, and a luxury suite at a Padres game were sold to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County. This year the club took the opportunity during dinner to recognize some of its important supporters. Deborah L. Zoller was awarded Volunteer of the Year for devoting her time and efforts to helping achieve the mission of the club. Bob Lucy of Del Rey Avocado Company was presented with the Helping Hands award for their outstanding support of the Boys & Girls Clubs

of North County. Bettye Burns was given the club’s highest honor, the Champion of Youth award for her continued support and advocacy of the club. A special tribute was paid to the late Arlyne Ingold in recognition of her incredible service to the club and children of Fallbrook. Arlyne’s daughter, Renee Ingold,
was presented with an inscribed vase in honor of her late mother. “We are so appreciative of the support from the community that makes this fantastic event possible,” said Allison Barclay, chief professional officer of the
Boys & Girls Club. “We truly believe that our club is making a difference here in the community of Fallbrook, and the support of our caring sponsors and guests here tonight tells me that we’re not alone in that belief.”

Adrienne Hess passed away February 23, 2014 at the Silvergate Memory Care residence in Fallbrook, Calif. A service celebrating her life and faith in Christ was held at the home of her daughter, Jackie Brooks. Adrienne Luella Buchlinger was born July 27, 1919 in Norborne, Mo. to Joseph F. and Cora Buchlinger. In 1937, she married Albert Allen Hess in Lexington, Mo. They were married for 66 years before Albert passed away in 2003. She was preceded in death by her sister, Geneva Cox, and brothers Frederick A. Buchlinger and Donald Reed Buchlinger.
She was a member of London Heights Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kans. Her interests included family, gardening, fishing and reading. In 1988, she moved from the Kansas City area to Fallbrook to be with her daughter and family. Adrienne is survived by her daughter Jackie; granddaughters Julie Thomas and Sherry Straeter; grandsons-in-law Pastor Derek Thomas and Pastor Tom Straeter; great-grandchildren Luke, Joel and Andrew Thomas, Tyler, Kyle and Brooke Straeter; niece Marlynn Landin and nephew Gary Buchlinger. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Pay off high-interest loans W h e n a d d r e s s i n g o n e ’s finances, take inventory of any high-interest loans, including credit card bills. It will save a person more money in the long
run to pay off this type of debt as soon as possible. The earlier such debts are eradicated, the less ultimately paid in interest. What’s more, paying off debt helps establish a better credit record and score, which can make a person eligible for lower interest rates in the future. Using a refund to eliminate debt is more beneficial than simply letting the refund sit in the bank, where it’s likely to accrue less interest each month than the interest that accrues on credit accounts with outstanding balances. Investigate savings programs It is estimated that customers who don’t have an account at a bank or credit union spend, on average, more than $800 at check-cashing businesses each year. Opening up an account with a credit union or bank will immediately save a person money on check-cashing fees. Speaking with a banking representative can also provide information about various programs that will enable one to save their tax refund and earn money on it through interest accumulation. In the National Retail Federation’s annual Tax Returns Study, 40.2 percent of respondents said they planned to stash some of their refund in savings in 2013. While traditional savings or checking accounts may offer nominal interest rates, longerterm certificate of deposits or money market accounts may yield more interest.
SAN DIEGO – San Diego County Assessor/ Recorder/ County Clerk, Ernest J. Dronenburg, Jr., wants to remind all business, aircraft, and vessel owners that the deadline to file their property statement without a penalty is May 7. All filings received and/or postmarked after May 7, 2014 will be subject to a 10 percent late filing penalty. In January, approximately 84,000 statements and notices were mailed
out to business, aircraft, and vessel owners. This included over 57,000 business accounts that were deemed eligible to file electronically. Ernie Dronenburg strongly encourages eligible business owners to e-file their statements online by May 7. The online e-file process is easy to access, easy to use and generally takes only a few minutes to complete. Ownership and taxability of all
personal property is determined each year as of Jan. 1. Any taxpayer receiving a statement or notice who was not the owner as of Jan. 1, 2014 should return the statement or notice with all closing information as soon as possible. Hume was approached with a request to volunteer for the advisory board. “I’ve been going to the meetings somewhat regularly,” he said. The other advisory board members suggested his nomination at the board’s November meeting. years, including 23 years as an airline pilot. “These credentials, along with the Department of Public Works’ recommendation, make Captain Hume a great fit for the Fallbrook Airpark Advisory Committee,” Horn said. Hume has also been a corporate pilot and a flight instructor. “I have a lifelong career in aviation doing everything with every airplane,” he said. “I was always fascinated by airplanes,” Hume said. “I’ve flown all my life, starting flying with I was 15, rode my bicycle to the airport to take flying lessons because I wasn’t old enough to drive.” Hume bicycled to Montgomery Field in the Clairemont Mesa area of San Diego for flying lessons. He lived just east of what was then San Diego State College. At the time the Alvarado Estates neighborhood west of San Diego State College had an airstrip. Hume also rode his bicycle to that airstrip to watch the planes take off and land, although he never flew out of Alvarado Estates. Hume followed his 1963 Crawford High School graduation with studies at San Diego State. He worked as a flight instructor while in college. His first job lasted less than a month through no fault of his own – the business was sold. “That was just the first of many,” he said. “In the world of aviation I’ve worked for everybody once.” Hume actually held the same position as an airline pilot for 23 years, although it was with three different airlines. What was Air California when he started became Air Cal, which was subsequently purchased by American Airlines. Hume has also worked as a pilot for three corporations, including flying cancelled checks in the middle of the night for seven years,

Hume moved to the Bay Area after graduating from San Diego State College. He lived in Orange County before moving to the Fallbrook/Bonsall border 12 years ago. “You’ve got to be a vagabond to be an airline pilot,” he said. His current residence is his first in northern San Diego County. “I absolutely love Fallbrook. I love the weather. I love the views,” he said. “It’s a lovely little spot.” When Hume first moved to Greater Fallbrook he was a member of a flying club out of Montgomery Field. He has flown out of Fallbrook Community Airpark for the last seven years. Hume currently owns a 1961 vintage Twin Bonanza. “We both started flying that same year, me and that airplane,” he said. Other than this year, when the airpark open house coinciding with the Avocado Festival was cancelled due to parking and traffic circulation concerns, Hume has displayed his plane at the open house. Hume has also been active with Friends of the Fallbrook Community Air Park. Hume has more than 11,000 hours of flying light aircraft. “I’m a great promoter of aviation,” he said. “Anybody who has the least interest should learn how to fly.” Although obtaining a pilot’s license is more expensive, Hume noted that learning how to fly can cost less than $2,000. He also noted that physical skill isn’t necessarily the most important factor in flying safely and successfully. “Flying is really more about good judgment,” he said. It’s not that difficult to elevate a garden for easier access and better gardening results. The simple act of creating a raised bed improves drainage in heavy clay soil. Add in some organic matter to further increase drainage and improve the water holding ability for sandy soils. If the soil is beyond repair or one doesn’t want to wait, a raised garden allows one to bring in quality soil and create a garden right on top of the existing soil or even paved areas. The quality soil and easy access will allow for dense plantings without pathways. This means greater yields, up to four times more, in raised beds than inground gardens. Raised beds also help conserve water. A gardener can concentrate their growing efforts in smaller areas and that means less water wasted. Increase the benefit by using soaker hoses or drip irrigation in order to concentrate water application to the soil nearest the plants, right where it is needed. Make the raised bed a comfortable height for the person that will be tending it. Elevating the garden minimizes bending and kneeling. Design raised beds in corners or edges suited for sitting

prior to filling with soil. Be sure to follow directions for the system being installed. Once the raised bed is complete, fill it with quality soil. Calculate the volume of soil needed by multiplying the length times the width times the height of the raised bed, making sure all measurements are in feet. Convert the cubic feet measurement to cubic yards by dividing it by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard). For a 4 x 8 feet raised bed that is 2 feet deep, multiply 4 x 8 x 2. This equals 64 cubic feet. Divide by 27 and it will need just a bit more than one cubic yard of soil. Don’t let the math overwhelm the situation, most topsoil companies and garden center staff can help with calculations. Just be sure to have the raised bed dimensions handy when ordering the soil. NORTH COUNTY – As the days get longer and the weather warmer, a homeowner’s thoughts turn naturally to... painting! Yes, as the spring maintenance season arrives, to-do lists start being made and projects are planned. But when it comes to home painting, what to do first? One of the best ways to begin is to thoroughly assess the painted condition of the entire property, both inside and out. Take a slow walk through and around a home, with pad and pencil in hand. Check out everything. Take notes. And for couples, it should be done together – not only because two sets of eyes are better than one, but to get buy-in as well. Inside the home, the desire for a more attractive appearance may take precedence over maintenance needs. Do room colors look “tired”? Is it time for a change? Look at the condition of the paint. Have the painted walls seen better days? Is the trim banged up? How do the baseboards look? And don’t fail to assess the condition of the ceilings; most people paint them far less frequently than the walls... and they often look that way. Outside the home, one should start their inspection at the front door, which gives friends and visitors the all-important first impression of someone’s home. Make sure it’s in tip-top shape. Next, look for signs of paint failure on exterior walls – check for bare wood, peeling, or flaking paint, mildew, or mold. If any masonry work is present on the home (on walls, foundation, or a fireplace), check for white, crusty efflorescence. Aluminum siding? Look for vulnerable bare metal and unsightly white oxidation, an indication that corrosion has set in. Check all the areas where two different surfaces come together. Make sure they are properly caulked and that the caulk is in good condition. If one notices a problem, make a note of it. Naturally, it’s smart to inspect exterior trim, windows, shutters, and doors, but don’t forget to also look at the garage door, gutters, downspouts, railings, and decks. A fresh coat of paint can help maintain them all, not to mention metal light fixtures and lamps, outdoor furniture, swing sets, picnic tables, and fencing. With an inventory of the painting needs, categorize the projects in terms of their urgency or desirability. It’s wise to assign every job a numerical or alphabetical rating, indicating which ones to do first. Next, check if new brushes, tools, or other accessories are needed for the most urgent projects. That way, they can be purchased in one trip to the hardware or home maintenance store, saving valuable time that can be used painting. Generally speaking, it’s better to get to the exterior paint jobs first, starting with the areas of greatest need. One should respect Mother Nature since delaying urgent outdoor painting projects can lead to the home sustaining more damage from inclement weather. If there are multiple exterior paint jobs on the “urgent” list, it might be possible to bunch similar projects together, saving a lot of time and effort. For example, if metal railings, metal furniture, and a metal lamppost are all badly in need of painting, it would be more efficient to do them all as one project. Watch the weather for ideal days to paint outside areas. Especially wet, cold or windy days may interfere with good paint film formation. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, move indoors. Follow the same procedure with interior painting that was used to do the outdoor work. Start with the most urgent projects. Low-water garden plants good choice for Fallbrook area landscapes nurseries offering succulents in this area. Advice is plentiful and one can easily discuss which plants are native to the area. These will be more tolerant to fluctuations in weather than plants that are imported. Nursery advisors are adept at explaining the amount of water various succulents require. Succulents, which include aloe, cacti and jade, are characterized by thick, fleshy water-storage organs. Succulents prefer bright light and can thrive in southfacing conditions. It’s good to concentrate the most amount of
watering for succulents during the spring growing season. Keep soil well-drained to avoid damage to shallow roots. A variety of sage plants, including white sage, black sage and Cleveland sage, are droughttolerant and do well in the greater Fallbrook area climate. Over the course of one year, REINS provides over 7,000 therapy sessions at one-third the actual cost to ride. REINS intentionally keeps their cost to the students low because they know their medical costs are extraordinary for the families. To offset these costs as well as the numerous ongoing capital projects taking place, the REINS of Life Fund was established at the Legacy Endowment Community Foundation so that anyone can give to the REINS cause. Girls have fun with the arts and crafts activities at the 2013 summer camp at Fallbrook Community Center. FALLBROOK – Eight, funfilled weeks, packed with activities such as field trips, sports, game room, art and crafts, special theme days and much more is what is offered in the summer camp for kids at the Fallbrook Community Center. Camp fee includes all project materials, daily snack, and field trips. Camp meets Monday through Friday, June 2 to July 25, from 7
a.m. to 6 p.m. It is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 12 and costs $99 per week for early registration (deadline May 16) or $120 per week after May 16. Claudia La Barge and Renee Barnes are the Bonsall Woman’s Club Volunteers of the Year for 2013-14. BONSALL – The Bonsall Woman’s Club (BWC) celebrated at their April meeting with the theme “Hats through the Ages.” Members honored this popular theme by wearing hats they were particularly fond of for a variety of reasons. There were an array of hats displayed with prizes awarded in several different categories. The ladies had a great time wearing their distinctive hats. H o w e v e r, a s t h e m e e t i n g progressed, so did the anticipation of who would be announced as the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award, given annually during the April meeting. The selection committee had a tough task because all the members feed off each other’s quests to improve the club and the community through their volunteer service. The difficult decision was made even more difficult for the committee because so many members are so very active in so many different categories. It was impossible to select just one recipient this year. Therefore, two ladies were selected to be awarded the honor of being the Volunteers of the Year. Both of these ladies have wonderful personalities, beautiful smiles and went above and beyond what is expected of BWC members. When asked to help, they never say no and can be relied on to volunteer without asking.

Entertainment Mother’s Day concert May 11 to be final of Fallbrook Music Societ y season FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Music Society’s 37th concert season will come to a resounding close on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, when esteemed Redlands Symphony conductor Dr. Jon Robertson gives a rare personal performance in a lush program to be heard only in Fallbrook. “We are extraordinarily fortunate to have Maestro Robertson so engaged with Fallbrook Music Society,” said Ann Murray, the society’s executive director. “He is someone who is recognized for his great artistry throughout the country and the region, and he has great love for our community.” Robertson (piano and harpsichord) will be joined by Redlands Symphony’s concertmaster Jeanne Skrocki and principal cellist Kyle Champion for this moving performance of chamber music, along with members of the Redlands Symphony string section. Concert-goers will be in for a rare treat, as this program features compositions from three of the finest and most well-known classical music composers of all time: Johann
Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn. One of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3; Mozart’s brilliant Piano Trio No. 5 in C Major, and Mendelssohn’s emotionally stirring Piano Trio are deeply emotional selections that are certain to please all in attendance. Robertson is now in his 26th season as music director and conductor or the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. Sculpture exhibit opens at Fallbrook Library FALLBROOK – A sculpture exhibit, “Up Against the Wall. Sculptural Constructions” will open at Fallbrook Library on May 4 and run until June 28. This exhibit features fine art from seven of the regions outstanding sculptors. Three of the artists have permanent art in the library. James Hubbell is the dean of sculptors in this region. Michael Stutz, a Rainbow resident, has public art pieces installed throughout the United States. Betsy Shulz is well loved by library patrons for her ceramic panel on the front of the library and the wall on the back patio. The other artists are Alec Conley, a Rainbow resident; Peter Mitten, an outstanding sculptor who has been at the center of sculptural activity in Fallbrook for many years; Richard Freund, whose wall sculptures can be seen at the Brandon Gallery; and James Soe Nyun. Soe Nyun uses QR code to create beautiful and inspiring art
works that have a Zen-like quality. Viewers should bring their iphones or similar devices and download an app for reading the QR code. The Fallbrook Library is known as an art library and the Friends of the Fallbrook Library are proud to announce that a new sculpture is being added to the collection. A large, beautiful marble piece executed by the late Andrew Fagan has been donated as art on loan by his widow, Pamela Roe. Fagan worked in California and in Italy, taught sculpture, and was a familiar figure in Fallbrook. There will be an opening reception at the library on Friday, May 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. The sculptors will be present and there will be a brief ceremony to introduce the new Fagan sculpture. To complete the evening, homemade pie will be served. The library is located at 124 S. Mission Rd.; (760) 731-4650.
