Baseball players overcome challenges to enjoy the game
INDEX
Diane A. Rhodes SPECIAL TO VALLEY NEWS
The pandemic restrictions of the past year caused a lot of anxiety and distress for many, but baseball players for the Menifee Valley Little League Challenger Division were especially hard hit. Families with special needs children used the outlet as more than a way for their children to keep physically active. The socialization they experienced by being part of a team is what parents say has been the home run of their involvement with the organization. Amy Ross-Frahn became the Challenger Division Representative about 10 years ago to enable children and adults ages four and older with physical, mental and developmental challenges to enjoy the game of baseball, regardless of any challenges they may face. Hemet City Council calls for special election to fill District 4 seat after court annuls previous election Tony Ault STAFF WRITER
The court-ordered annulment of Hemet City Mayor Pro Tem Joe Males’ November 2020 election led the council to call for a special election to fill his open seat in November or earlier. The decision was made by the four remaining council members following a heated and sometimes emotional discussion at the June 8 meeting whether he should be appointed back on the council that night. The discussion, whether Males should be appointed to council immediately, was led by Mayor Karlee Meyer. The four council members, Meyer, Linda Krupa, Russ Brown and Malcolm Lilienthal, responded. The discussion followed many residents from Males’ former District 4 and others who, one by
one, took the speaker’s podium to encourage the council to act that night to appoint Males back to the council. The city attorney explained that the council has the option to either appoint someone qualified to the vacant seat in the next few weeks to fill Males’ term that will expire before a new election is held. The attorney said the council must decide by July 29 or before, or a special election or scheduled consolidated election is held in the county or state. The debate opened with Krupa expressing her view that the city should choose Males’ replacement after all those interested applied and were interviewed one by one by an ad hoc committee before being selected for appointment. The council was told to do so or inform the Riverside County Registrar of Voters a special election needs to see ELECTION, page A-6
