Happy Holidays! Julie Reeder, Publisher

Since we’re focusing on the holidays and health, it was simply fun for us to put Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed “Dr. McDreamy” in the television show Grey’s Anatomy for years, on the cover. Learn about what he and his family are doing in real life to support cancer research. In this issue, we’ve featured local doctors, dentists and health professionals who are making a real difference in our communities, and we published quotes from our readers describing why their doctor is a “Favorite Doctor.” Don’t miss the story about Dr. Chaudhuri, originally from India, who came to America and has used his resources, time and talent to make sure people in the communities he’s involved with have quality healthcare. In addition to several hospitals in Southern California, he owns a large hospital in India, 19 nursing schools, a medical college, and vast existing and future commercial projects. Furthermore, you will learn about the latest medical technologies using DNA, telemonitoring and telemedicine, as well as how to beat inflammation and chronic disease with diet. For the holidays, you can see some of the latest fashions or peruse tips for gift ideas, whether it’s jewelry, new cars, wine, or objets d’art. Take advantage of ideas for decorating which encourage you to be creative and use plants, fruit and other items from outside to make your home more memorable. Our calendar will help you decide which festivities to choose while celebrating with family and friends. For all those brides and grooms-to-be this holiday season (or anyone wanting to buy diamonds), don’t miss “Put a Ring on It,” which gives great information on the 5 C’s. Lastly, when choosing a wedding venue, you wouldn’t want to overlook the beautiful wineries we have right in our own backyard. They specialize in making that special day exquisite. The staff which brings you Lifestyle Magazine, Sourcebook Magazines, Valley News, Village News, and Anza Valley Outlook also wishes you a Merry Christmas and/or a Happy Hanukkah!

Blessings,

his year, make dressing up for the holidays just as fun as giving gifts to your friends and family. While leggings are still a favorite with a comfy top, forget about the cheesy coordinating holiday sweaters. Bring on the trendy looks that work beyond just the holidays and ring in the New Year in style! Classy long dresses are always in, but with our warmer holiday season, don’t be afraid to show off those legs in some of the shorter styles that work for almost any occasion. Why not find some really sassy shoes and a jacket to dress up any outfit? In addition, it’s important to take care of your skin and hair with quality products that nurture them while making you look great. Your best investments for fashion are the ones that you’re comfortable using for several occasions with the right accessories. Accessorizing is key, especially with every woman’s staple little black dress. Gold gives the perfect holiday touch. New technology, especially in metallurgy, affords many new options now for setting these gems and the use of contemporary metals, which are leading to greatly reduced prices, compared to the standard choice of gold. The Collector also caters to brides and grooms. “We do a lot of business in engagement rings because we are known as a destination for very classic, contemporary designs,” Manager Geri Vigil said. Not only does their expansive ring collection demonstrate the endless possibilities when it comes to engagement rings, their designers are immensely talented at refashioning family jewelry using existing diamonds and other precious gems in a new design to suit this special purpose.

“We also offer settings in silver as it provides economocial prices for our customers,” Vigil said. “In addition, with today’s technology they are doing overlays on silver that never comes off and lasts a lifetime,” Vigil added. by Paul Bandong 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e Plug-In Hybrid Long recognized as an automotive icon, especially with successful businessmen, the Mercedes-Benz flagship S-Class is the marque’s most prestigious and significant volume model line. Renowned for its technological innovation, luxurious appointments and serene ride and handling, the S-Class recently launched its first-ever plug-in hybrid in the U.S. as the S550e Plug-In Hybrid ($96,600 MSRP). The powertrain is a hybridized turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine with a single 85-kilowatt electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an adapted version of Mercedes-Benz’s sevenspeed automatic transmission. Mercedes-Benz offers four power modes with variations of the two power sources. The car will accelerate 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds. As usual, the plethora of safety and entertainment features results in incredible luxury, extreme functionality and impressive comfort. 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 A world-class supercar for the true sports car enthusiast at an unmatched dollar-per horsepower price! The Z06 is built around a rigid, lightweight aluminum space frame, and a supercharged LT4 6.2-liter aluminum V-8 engine that delivers 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque! This car will go from 0-60 miles per hour in less than three seconds. Developed in tandem with the C7.R race car, the two share similar technologies: carbon-fiber roof and hood, dry sump oil system, titanium intake valves, composite floor panels, hydroformed aluminum frame and adjustable rear spoiler wickerbill. Performance capabilities are enhanced by magnetic ride suspension control that adjusts a thousand times per second, large two-piece steel brake rotors, available performance packages (check out the Z07), and a Z06 Aero package. Five selectable driver modes automatically calibrate twelve performance variables. Lastly, the Performance Data Recorder logs video and real-time performance data; Valet Mode also captures video and data. The cockpit is outfitted with technology, functionality and comfort. Available in coupe or convertible, automatic or manual transmission, the 2017 Corvette Z06 (starting MSRP of $79,450) is functional and beautiful and just downright fun.

2017 Hyundai Genesis G90 The flagship G90 is Genesis’ first entry into the full-size luxury market competing against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-series, Cadillac CT6 and XTS, Audi A8, Jaguar XJ and the Lexus LS. A starting MSRP $20,000 to $70,000 less than some of its competitors makes it one of the best values in that luxury segment. Nonetheless, it impresses with its 204.9-inch-long body, elegant styling and first-class cabin. It offers few options, making most luxury and performance features standard equipment: such as a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a head-up display, 900-watt 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, inductive smartphone charging, 360-degree view parking system, supple leather appointments and real wood trim, extra-thick acoustic glass, three-zone climate control, self-leveling suspension, adaptive dampers, automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. You can also opt for power rear seats that adjust 12 ways on the left and 14 ways on the right. The G90 feels solid, secure, smooth and responsive. The G90 offers two engine choices – a 365-hp 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 and a 420hp 5.0-liter V-8 – as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission. You can also choose between rear- or all-wheel drive.

2017 Buick Escada Sport Touring Convertible For the first time in 35 years, a domestic brand has cracked into the top three in Consumer Reports’ annual ranking of the most reliable automobiles. General Motors rebranded upscale nameplate – Buick – is behind perennial leaders Lexus and Toyota, but ahead of 26 other brands. Shoppers in the market for a front-wheel drive four-seat convertible – almost year-round in sunny Southern California – should take a look at the new 2017 Buick Escada. The new Sport Touring edition is distinct in True Blue Metallic, a color not available on any other Cascada model. The standard turbocharged 1.6-liter power plant puts out 200 horsepower and transfers the power through a six-speed automatic transmission. The model also comes standard with adaptive xenon headlights, rear parking assist, remote engine start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen display with a rearview camera, and OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hot spot. The Sport Touring model features five-spoke, 20-inch wheels and a black soft top that retracts in seventeen seconds at speeds up to 31 miles per hour, UV-reflective leather-trimmed seats, sport pedals, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. MSRP starts at $37,885 including a $925 destination charge.

2017 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited There are very few large hybrid sedans; the Toyota Avalon Hybrid ($37,250 starting MSRP) stacks up well in a value comparison to the Ford Fusion-based Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and the Lexus ES 300h. This is a great entry-level luxury sedan. Acceleration is good (7.4 seconds to 60 mph) and sport mode improves throttle and transmission response. The 2.5-liter four cylinder (156 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque) and 140-horsepower, 199 pound-feet electric drive motor powered by a 204-cell, 6.5-Ah nickel metal hydride battery pack provide drive to the front wheels through an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, delivering 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. The ride is smooth and well-damped and the steering is responsive. While the exterior is subtly stylish, the interior is quiet, spacious and comfortably luxurious. Standard on the Avalon Hybrid Limited are: dual-zone automatic climate control, moonroof, 11-speaker JBL audio system, rearview camera, Entune infotainment system with voice recognition and navigation, wireless phone charging, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. For 2017, the Toyota Sense P system – a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beam management, and dynamic radar cruise control – is standard. Life is idyllic for Patrick Dempsey since his departure from Grey’s Anatomy

by Andrea Verdin

ife’s a dream in the movies, but it can also be in real life. That’s definitely the case for TV and film star Patrick Dempsey, most commonly known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd. Most recently, Dempsey wrapped “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” but his filming schedule has cut back dramatically since then. Before becoming his character, frequently called “McDreamy” by fans, Dempsey had actually auditioned for a role on another medical show, House. But the role Dempsey auditioned for, Dr. Chase, wouldn’t have been as perfect for Dempsey as the Shepherd character was. This may be why fans were broken hearted at Dr. Shepherd’s shocking death, caused by an automobile accident in season 11. Since stepping down from his role on the show, Dempsey has been busy with his family and another of his passions: giving back. At the start of October, Dempsey returned to his home state of Maine, to participate in a cancer survivor walk with his three children – Talula Fyfe, and twins Sullivan Patrick and Darby Galen – and his two sisters. 12 | Lifestyle

Winter 2016

The Dempsey Challenge, a walk and run event, which took place Oct, 1-2, raised money for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Dempsey and his sisters created the center in 2008 after they were inspired by their mother. Amanda died from ovarian cancer in 2014 after relapsing five times. The center is currently in partnership with the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Because of his efforts, Dempsey was honored with an honorary doctorate by Bowdoin College in 2013, and his character Derek Shepherd was written as a Bowdoin graduate after students adopted the character as an alumnus. Challenge participants can choose between cycling for 10, 25, 50, 70, or 100 miles; cycle over 140 miles in a two-day ride; as well as walk/run a 5K or 10K. In addition, guests can enjoy a free music festival, free kids’ fun run and family ride. Cancer survivors are encouraged to participate in the walk, free of charge. In previous years, the event has drawn over 4,000 participants. Last year alone, the event raised over $1.2 million, with participants from 35 states and six foreign countries.

Since stepping down from his role on the show, Dempsey has been busy with his family and another of his passions: giving back.

“It’s what keeps us motivated to keep working year-round to expand and improve our services so we can help more people here in Maine and someday around the country,” Dempsey said. Philanthropy is only one element of Dempsey’s life, as he took time away from the hectic TV show schedule to refocus on his marriage to Jillian Fink and spend time with their children. Earlier in the year, rumors swirled around the couple alleging their 15-year marriage was coming to an end. However, Dempsey was not ready to let his marriage go, and began refocusing his life on what he believed was most important. “Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of,” Dempsey told People magazine. “I didn’t feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That’s where it started.” With that, coming back home to Maine is a way to keep himself grounded.

“It’s an experience that never leaves you and one I find myself connecting with and drawing from more and more as I raise my own children,” he said. The couple decided it Dempsey Challenge photos by was best to work on their James Carpenter, 2016 issues and went through couple counseling. “Everybody has their own path,” Dempsey said. “Jill and I decided it was time to work on our issues and improve. We wanted to be role models for our kids like, okay, if you have differences, you can work them out. “It’s always destabilizing when you’re potentially breaking up a family or you have a big section of your life that’s ending.” While Dempsey might be stepping out of the limelight for a period, he is not simply sitting idle. Since leaving “Grey’s Anatomy,” he has been working on two small-screen projects. “I would love to do something else,” he said to Entertainment Weekly. “I’m going to take the rest of the year off to develop. I would like to be a producer. I would commit to a show that is 10 to 12 episodes. But 24 again, I don’t know if I would do that. It’s a very hard life. It’s financially rewarding but there comes a point where how much is enough, really? I’m focusing now on developing and racing and being a father to my children.”

hile healthcare laws continue to change, and we learn to navigate one of the most complicated managed care systems in the world, what remains key is the quality of care and the relationships we have with our doctors, dentists and healthcare providers. It’s very personal. It starts with the office and support staff and ultimately the physicians themselves. Different personalities appreciate different qualities in their doctor. Do they have a friendly demeanor? Are they detailed and thorough? Does their office return phone calls? One person may appreciate the extra time a doctor takes, while another person may perpetually be in a hurry and not want to spend more time than absolutely necessary. We’ve polled our readers, and you’ve given us feedback on your favorite doctors and dentists. Our hope is that as you face changes in your healthcare providers and coverage, this may help point you in the right direction to a physician who meets your needs. We’ve also included stories about new technology in the medical field, amazing cures, as well as how old-fashioned nutrition is on the frontlines curing many chronic diseases and ailments.

or 12 years now, Dr. Parul Mehta has continued the tradition of excellent patient treatment at Sunrise Family Dentistry in Temecula and Riverside. “We have always given our patients the best service they deserve. We are always very friendly, sympathetic and preventionoriented. My team and I aim to provide the highest quality of clinical care and treatment. We love our patients like family and treat them like royalty. After all, anything else would be unacceptable,” Dr. Mehta said. Dr. Mehta graduated from Indiana University in 2001. She is an Invisalign, Lumineer and Implantology certified dentist. She is a member of the General Academy of Dentistry, the California and American Dental Associations, Tri-County Dental Society, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Mehta’s staff is also highly trained, putting in many hours of continuing education each year to stay up-to-date with the

most advanced cosmetic methods in dentistry. Specializing in the latest technology, Dr. Mehta is able to offer her patients the most current techniques. This includes digital xrays, same day crowns and digital imaging, which allows patients to see the results of cosmetic treatments before they have any procedures done. Her team also offers 3-D facial CT scans, digital impressions, laser treatment and oral cancer screening. Each patient is treated as an individual with Dr. Mehta, tailoring treatment to attain each person’s dental goals. At the same time, her team of highly trained professionals provide a relaxing, welcoming environment to make their patients as comfortable as possible. Patients can even take a virtual tour of the office before they make an appointment by visiting www.hi-techsmiles.com. These are some of the many reasons why Dr. Mehta has successfully treated hundreds of people who previously feared dental visits, helping them to overcome their fears to complete their treatments and to achieve their ideal, long-lasting smiles. Rich K. of Murrieta commented, “It’s hard for me to give a dentist 5 stars. I mean...really...who likes to go to the dentist? Still, I force myself to go because it’s better to take care of any problems early in spite of my trepidation, I have to say that they do a great job here. “The staff gets to know you and they are always professional and friendly. Dr Mehta is friendly, caring and does her best to put her patients at ease –even the super chickens like me. I really cannot say she’s ever really caused me any pain – in fact, quite the opposite. My experiences here have always been positive. She does excellent work and cares that the patient is satisfied with the work performed. “If you have an emergency, she will squeeze you in. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for quality care at a reasonable price.” That statement rings true to how Dr. Mehta does excellent dentistry. She always puts patient’s needs and benefits first.

he only way to do great work is to love what you do,” Steve Jobs said. Richard Goble, DDS, loves what he does, and it shows in the expert work that he performs on each one of his dental practice patients. He feels that cosmetic dentistry can improve one’s image and in turn, boost confidence. “We have a wonderful team, and we are here to help our patients,” he remarked. Dr. Goble’s dental practice is not just about teeth – it’s about people. He enjoys getting to know his patients. The minute that anyone steps in the door to the warm, inviting waiting room, they feel at home. His office is equipped with advanced technology, including digital x-rays and a 3-D pan, which pans through the mouth to give a three dimensional view of the entire mouth. One of the benefits of the 3-D pan is that it allows Dr. Goble and his staff to differentiate between the various diseases of the mouth.

“It is the best way to get a complete diagnosis,” Dr. Goble noted, “It also allows us to put implants in and virtually see where they will go.” It pleases Dr. Goble to see the satisfaction that patients feel after coming in. “Many are, at first, very apprehensive, but we have the ability to make top quality crowns that last a long time – in one appointment.” These crowns are bonded and beautiful. There are advantages to making same-day crowns. Patients skip the series of appointments needed for traditional crowns, and they also avoid the uncomfortable feeling of wearing an illfitting temporary cap. Dr. Goble has been making a difference in the lives of his patients through dentistry for 37 years. It was a life-long dream of his because his father was a dentist, and he could see that he enjoyed his work. Dr. Goble earned his DDS degree in 1976 from the University of the Pacific Dental School, and continued his education at the post-graduate dental school, Las Vegas Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry). As a result of his training, Dr. Goble is adept at advanced techniques in cosmetic and neuromuscular dentistry. After Dr. Goble completed his dentistry degree he joined his father Dr. Gaylord G. Goble in his Beverly Hills practice. In 1991, searching for a more peaceful, rural atmosphere, Dr. Goble and his family moved to Fallbrook, and established his practice. wall of rock-strewn slopes. He was invited to a party, and had been told that the drive from Laguna Niguel would take about three hours on the serpentine Highway 74. – Dr. Kali Pradip Chaudhuri The drive to Hemet took less time than he expected. That left Dr. Chaudhuri ample time to explore the area and savor its scenery and ambiance. “This is beautiful out here,” he recalled thinking to himself. “This is a great place for orthopedics.” Then he discovered the hospital that had long served the cities of Hemet and San Jacinto as well as their surrounding unincorporated enclaves. It was love at first sight, he recalled. Soon after, Dr. Chaudhuri connected with the then chief of staff, who noted a need for primary care physicians and internists. Dr. Chaudhuri said he was told those specialties, as well as psychiatry, were the typical path of entry into the Hemet area market for foreign-born doctors. That welcome became decidedly chilly, however, when Dr. Chaudhuri told his contact that they shared the same specialty, orthopedics. He said he seemed to hit a brick wall when he went ahead and applied for admission credentials to practice at Hemet hospital. He was baffled over how it took just five weeks to receive clearance to practice at UCLA’s prestigious medical center yet nearly a year had passed without receiving a similar blessing from Hemet. Dr. Chaudhuri said he initially suspected that the wheels had slowed in the approval process because he was an outsider. But then he wondered whether it was because he was seen as competition by a top administrator and surgeon at the Hemet center. That changed, he said, when his Hemet medical colleague faced an insurmountable professional challenge when one of his relatives suffered a severe arm injury. A recommendation was brought forward to contact Dr. Chaudhuri, whose consultation led to the patient’s recovery. Dr. Chaudhuri said his colleague was so relieved that he offered a teary apology and vowed to break the certification logjam. He said that doctor and others soon recognized his surgical abilities, organizational leadership and business acumen. A short while later he was offered leadership positions at the hospital. His lengthy resume soon included the chairman positions at Hemet Valley Hospital’s surgery department and the orthopedic department of the Hemet Community Medical Group. Likewise, he was listed as a faculty member at the Loma Linda University Medical School. “This is not because I am so good, but because the community is good. I could not have done it on my own,” he said. “All of the other doctors were good, and the community is a good community.” Dr. Chaudhuri, his wife and two children, Kali Priyo and Sumanta, soon moved to Hemet. Like many community hospitals, an array of factors caused a

financial squeeze to grip Hemet’s facility. An administrative reorganization helped, but Dr. Chaudhuri said he realized that the conservative structure of a hospital district was unable to respond to the challenges that exist in today’s fast-changing medical services industry. The hospital district model included several shortcomings, he said. Directors elected from the community often lacked the expertise to understand and manage such complex medical operations, he said. “If the board of directors ran the hospital like a traditional business, it would still be a district hospital,” he mused. He has bumped into some naysayers along the way. “The doctors supported me,” he said. “When people didn’t think I could do it I would fight. And, yes, sometimes I’m controversial.” His focus began to shift from providing direct medical care to management and acquisition activities. In late 2010, Dr. Chaudhuri and his group acquired Valley Health System, Hemet Valley Medical Center and Menifee Valley Medical Center, pulling it out of bankruptcy. He and his partners had previously acquired four Orange County hospitals. The latest score along those lines came via the acquisition of Victor Valley Community Hospital in Victorville. In each of these cases, Dr. Chaudhuri and partners were successful in turning around financially troubled hospitals, thus enabling them to continue as viable providers of care to their communities. Dr. Chaudhuri is also planning ancillary projects around the Hemet and Menifee hospitals and making bold forays into such far-flung business fields as commercial real estate, resorts and hotels, educational institutions and retirement and assisted living facilities. Development plans along those lines including making Hemet Valley a teaching hospital, which would include a medical school. He envisions a campus-like setting that spans several blocks around the hospital. Inside the facility, a similar array of improvements include a cardiac center, a wound center, an assessment center and a community dialysis center. A 90-bed skilled nursing facility opened in June, soon to be renamed after Dr. Chaudhuri’s mother, Shova. A similar slate of upgrades is planned in the near future, in and around the Menifee hospital. Those improvements will be anchored by a three to four-story 60,000 sq.ft. medical building, visible from Interstate 215 and will feature a campus setting. The campus will feature a senior Dr. Chaudhuri explains his plans for the medical Valley Medical Center. wellness center, a congregate campus around HemetLaurianna Briana photo Winter 2016

care building, a custodial care building, food services and vascular and neurosurgery units. Meanwhile, Dr. Chaudhuri has completed or is planning some key medical, retail and senior projects in the Hemet and San Jacinto areas. A vacant Walmart store has been transformed into the KPC Town Center in Hemet. “For Hemet, we are trying to make it better,” he said of his economic development efforts. “I waited six years for the right businesses. I visited their headquarters to recruit them. I wanted upscale stores like Burlington. It cost me a lot of money, and I made deals with them to entice them to come to Hemet and since the opening they’ve had an excellent response.”

His San Jacinto project – termed the KPC Promenade – is located between Main Street and Ramona Expressway. That plan includes a hotel, medical building, outpatient center and restaurants. An 80-unit senior apartment building that would feature ancillary healthcare services is also in the planning stages for the region. Dr. Chaudhuri said the broad swath of land that stretches from Orange County to Hemet has become a firm base to fulfill his dreams of sharing his South Asian culture, heritage and values. “America is better than any country in the world. We have to keep going,” he said. “My son and my grandsons, my kids and my grandkids still have to carry on. We have to make this a great place. I am grateful to God to be in America and in Hemet. When people ask me where I am from, I proudly say: ‘I am from Hemet.’ ”

New Technologies Making Our Lives Easier Telemedicine and Telemonitoring “We are currently on the cusp of radical changes to healthcare as we know it,” says Dr. Mohr from Primary Care Physicians. He continues, “The technologic revolution of the past few decades are finally having an impact in the way we get care. Telemedicine is becoming more common place especially in areas where patients are too remote to access specialty care. Soon Primary Care will utilize this technology so one can remain home and be diagnosed and treated via an internet connection. Telemonitoring is also on the fast track to be routine. There are already lots of apps on your smart phone that can track your vital signs, heart rhythms, take a picture of your child’s ear drums and soon will be able to run some blood tests with a special attachment. All of this can be uploaded and sent to your physician via the electronic medical record. Electronic medical records will also become more interconnected and soon your doctor will be able to access visits from other hospitals to better manage your care. “

Individualized treatment – genetic makeup, DNA genomic sequencing, gene therapy, stem cell treatment Dr. Mohr adds that individualized treatment is the way of the future. “Medicine will eventually undergo a monumental change in its philosophy. Currently, we are managing patients through population health protocols. This helps us screen patients and treat according to some guidelines and standards. However, we realize that some of these guidelines may not best benefit the individual patient. This is where precision medicine will help guide us to the best screening, diagnosis and treatment for the individual patient according to their unique genetic makeup. We are very close to having relatively inexpensive DNA genomic sequencing which will allow for us to be more precise. Other advances that will be available in the coming years include gene therapy and stem cell treatment for a variety of conditions. This is indeed an exciting time to be practicing medicine.”

New technologies in dentistry – Digital Impression Equipment Dr. Parul Mehta prides herself on always acquiring and using the latest technology and offering the best Dentistry in the Temecula area. Recently she acquired Digital Impression Equipment TRIOS from 3Shape Company. Dr. Mehta says, “It is a great tool and a blessing for the patients, dentist and dental staff because there is no more gooey substance that always fills the patient’s mouth for the impression.” Historically, the dentist would fill your mouth with a putty substance and ask you to bite down, forming an impression of your teeth. Then you must remain still and wait until it hardened. The impression was sent to the lab. Now the TRIOS, an in-the-mouth scanner accurately captures a complete image of your teeth in 3D with up to 3000 2D images per second. It’s 100 times faster than a video camera and the 3D image allows the dental technician to work on an exact replica of your teeth. The dentist smoothly glides the scanner over your teeth, rapidly creating an accurate impression digitally in 3 D. The results can be immediately sent to a lab over the internet or used in-house. According to Dr. Mehta, the advantages are hard to ignore. TRIOS, by 3Shape, an in-the-mouth scanner captures a complete image of your teeth in 3D. Courtesy photo

Inflammation – The

Silent Enemy

by Ruth Rondberg Inflammation – the Inflammation – it seems as though everyone is talking about it these days, but what do you really know about inflammation? Inflammation is typically a short-term response to infection and injury, aimed at removing infection and allowing repair of the damaged tissue, ultimately resulting in healing. We are all familiar with this type of inflammation. You twist an ankle, or worse yet, break a bone, and you will swell up; this is actually a healthy response designed to heal you. It’s a short-term reaction, and it’s exactly what we need. Chronic inflammation is an immune response that can often become overactive which has been associated with many chronic diseases, conditions, and risk factors, ranging from type 2 diabetes and depression to heart disease, many forms of cancer, and even dementia. Research indicates the underlying cause of chronic inflammation is behaviors linked to modern lifestyles, for example: poor nutrition, 24 | Lifestyle

inactivity, inadequate sleep and stress. Let’s face it; we all have to eat. What you eat is a major issue. One of the quickest and most effective ways to finding out if something you are eating is causing inflammation is to eliminate it from your diet. Following a plan that eliminates most of the food groups known to cause inflammation will have the best results. It’s difficult to find them one at a time because you may eliminate one but are still consuming another. I compare that to playing “Whack a Mole,” and you can do that all day long without winning the game. A thorough purification program can be completed in just a few weeks. This gives the body enough time to clean out and reset. Here is the plan I find works best for me and my clients. Nourishing yourself with nutrient-rich foods will provide the complex combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants needed to protect the body and promote optimal health.

Whenever possible, eat only fresh or frozen organic vegetables and fruits. Strive to avoid dried or canned ingredients; if you must use them, organic and in a BPA-free can is preferred. You can eat an unlimited amount of vegetables with only a few exceptions like corn, and potatoes. Eating sweet potatoes and yams are a much better option. Try to consume three times as many vegetables as fruit during the day and eat up to half of the vegetables raw to improve your vitamin and mineral intake. I also recommend adding a healthy protein shake to your diet as well. Find one that has a good clean source of protein without any added fillers, sugars, or synthetic ingredients in it. This shake is also a good way to get extra fiber and good fats such as coconut oil, flaxseed oil into your diet as you can add them to the shake daily. Also, including fresh or frozen fruit makes these shakes a great breakfast option.

indicates the underlying cause of chronic inflammation is behaviors linked to “ Research modern lifestyles, for example; poor nutrition, inactivity, inadequate sleep and stress. Refrain from consuming; sugar, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco or other stimulants, nuts, dairy, eggs, grains and grain products like pasta, any processed and refined foods. I also recommend at least a week to ten days without protein sources like chicken, fish, and red meats. Slowly adding them back in is recommended in small portions of 3-5 oz. per serving. Avoiding cured, smoked or luncheon meats is still recommended for the rest of the plan. Drinking lots of water, exercising, and getting enough sleep is always recommended. Pampering yourself with a warm bath with Epsom salt and essential oils or getting a massage is also a great way to promote the purification process. Once you have completed the three weeks of purification, you are ready to start the food reintroduction process. Systematically reintroducing foods from one food group at a time allows you to gauge

how these foods make you feel and if they are causing you any problems. Your body hasn’t digested some of these foods in these groups for weeks, so you’ll want to introduce each new food in small portions and only one at a time. Give your body at least two days between each food you add back in your diet. Let your body guide you. If you reintroduce a new food and feel bloated or gassy, have a headache, or any other symptom, make a mental note and avoid that food. Keeping a journal can be helpful and understanding if you are experiencing an allergic reaction or an intolerance is also important. An allergic reaction happens when the body’s immune system mistakes a part of a food for something harmful. Foods that cause the most problems for adults are peanuts, tree nuts (like walnuts or almonds), fish, and shellfish. Any food can cause an allergy like milk, eggs, soy prod-

ucts or wheat. Allergic reactions usually happen fast – minutes to hours after eating these foods. Food intolerance is when part of a food or additive can’t be processed and causes irritation. Sugar intolerance, for example, could be from a biological cause in which the body lacks the enzymes needed to process it. It could also be from an additive, such as a sugar substitute in diet foods that are poorly absorbed by the gut. The body’s response to food intolerance is usually based on portion. A small amount provokes a small reaction; a large portion provokes a larger reaction. The time frame for problems is longer too; it can take place immediately or over a few days. Finding the right balance in your diet can go a long way in fighting inflammation. Listen to the signals your body is sending you and change what you can. You will be amazed at how good you will feel.

edicinal advancement has truly transformed the lives of many around the world. Illnesses that were once permanent, if not deadly, are now being treated, and individuals who had once suffered through maladies are able to live happy, healthy lives once again. These medicines and treatments are not simply for those who live in large metropolises, or even those who can afford exorbitant doctor fees – with the advance of medicine, anyone can receive top of the line medical care. Such was the case with Jon Monday, a Fallbrook resident since 2004, who has been cured of hepatitis C with the help of new medication. Monday’s journey started in the 1980s, when he worked in Silicon Valley as a vice president of a video game business at the age of 40. “I never felt any symptoms of the disease itself,” Monday said. “The benefit package for senior management bought me a life insurance package, and they sent someone to sign me up for a life insurance policy.” What should have been a simple checkup led to Monday being rejected for the policy, and left him with a slurry of questions. “I was told that I had slightly elevated liver enzymes, so they sent me to a liver specialist,” Monday said. “In the 80s there wasn’t a test for Hep C; at one point, I was completely misdiagnosed.” It wasn’t until 1989 that Monday was given a clear picture of what was happening to him – his liver was being destroyed by hepatitis C. The vi-

rus attacks the liver, causing cirrhosis and fibrosis in the liver. However, Monday was not going to allow the virus to destroy his life. “The liver specialist I sought out was in touch with drug companies doing trials, and I was lucky enough to be put into those trials,” Monday said. Monday remembers the side effects of the medication being akin to chemotherapy. “It was psychologically depressing and physically debilitating,” he said. “We went on family vacations to Israel and Egypt, and I just wanted to stay in the hotel room.” Monday went through four trials to combat the liver infection, but even with the help of some of the most learned doctors in the illness, Monday’s hopes were beginning to dim. “I had to assume I was going to die early and began to plan for that by making provisions for my wife. They are gruesome thoughts you have to deal with,” Monday said. “The fact that I had an infectious disease was always in the back of my mind, and I had to be on constant awareness that I had the disease. I couldn’t share a water bottle with my granddaughter.” Upon moving to Fallbrook in 2004, Monday signed up for scientific studies performed at the Scripps Translational Science Institute in San Diego. Dr. Paul Pockros, the clinical director of research at Scripps Translational Science Institute, has been researching treatments of hepatitis C for 26 years.

At the science institute, multiple subsequent studies have been performed on the illness, with each step leading to better therapy. “The first study was with a drug called telaprevir, which required the use of interferons and ribavirin, and had a great deal of side effects that made him sick,” Pockros said. “[Monday] was cleared of the virus while he was on medication, but he relapsed when he stopped taking it.” Monday began the fourth and final treatment which was called Harvoni, and required him to take a dosage of two pills together for 24 weeks. “The virus was eradicated [in Monday] by October 2013,” Pockros said. “Three years ago he sustained a virologic response, and was cured.” At the science institute, 1,000 other patients besides Monday were cured with the treatment. “It’s transformational in practice,” Pockros said. “If one looks at the studies, the treatment is curative in 96 percent of patients. In our own population, our cure rate was 95 to 96 percent.” Pockros stated the margin of individuals who were not able to be cured of hepatitis C with the medication suffered advanced liver disease or cirrhosis of the liver. “I never felt a side effect from the medication,” Monday said. Monday and Pockros both believe it is crucial for individuals to be tested for Hep C, as there is such a transformational treatment available. “Patients of Hep C are the small minority,” Pockros said. “Those few we had have come and gotten treated, but there are patients that remain because they don’t know they have the infection. Close to a million people have been cured worldwide, so there is clearly less people with the infection. However that’s just a small number of patients compared to the infection. The therapy is simple: take a pill for three months with no side effects. Gastroenterologists around the country and world can use this to treat Hep C.” Three years after the treatment, Monday is still enrolled with the trial program, and has found that his liver has not only been cleared of the hepatitis C virus, but it also has begun to regenerate itself. “Mr. Monday had compensated cirrhosis of the liver before he was treated,” Pockros said, who explained that this type of cirrhosis left his liver scarred and damaged, but allowed for the liver to function normally. Upon having hepatitis C purged from his system, Monday and 215 other patients were monitored to watch their livers after treatment. While the patients might still have scarring of the liver, they are no longer considered to have cirrhosis. “That’s an important landmark,” Pockros said. “We are still following the group of patients to see how long it’s going to take for this to reverse, but we believe it will take five to ten years for the damage to reverse completely. About 12 of those patients were listed for liver transplants, but they have been treated and cured to the point that they were taken off the list.” Now 69 years old, Monday has truly begun to enjoy his retirement with the knowledge that he is healthy. “It took me a long time to digest that,” he admitted. “I lived with Hep C for so long. I was in the hot tub with my granddaughter, and she reached for my water bottle. I snatched it from her by instinct, but my daughter reminded me ‘You don’t have to do that anymore. You’re cured.’”

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries last through the lifetime of a hearing aid, even after years of repeated charging. The new technology is also environmentally friendly, with users typically going through nearly 100 batteries per year. Ideal for those constantly on the move, Phonak rechargeable hearing aids also come with smart charging options. The power pack, which is easily attached to the Phonak Charger Case, provides power for seven full charges of two hearing aids, ideal for short trips where no power source is available. In addition, Phonak offers a

compact mini charger giving users full flexibility. Research revealed that rechargeable batteries and rechargeable hearing aids were top of the list of features that hearing aid users were seeking. In response to this insight and based on years of research, development and intensive testing, Phonak Audéo B-R opened a new era to those affected by hearing loss. In addition to the convenience of prolonged battery life, the Audéo B-R uses AutoSense OS, which gives cutting edge unmatched hearing performance. has also been enhanced to offer better hearing performance in everyday listening situations. When Minutes Matter:

Stroke is an Emergency. Act FAST and Call 9-1-1

What You Need To Know About Stroke by Pranav Kachhi, MD

Medical Director, Emergency Services Temecula Valley Hospital Courtesy photo

Every forty seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, making stroke the leading cause of adult disability, and the third-leading cause of death nationwide.* Yet most Americans don’t know how to recognize the warning signs — even though this knowledge can save more lives. “Time is brain” A stroke, or “brain attack”, occurs when blood vessels to the brain rupture or become blocked by a blood clot, which causes brain tissue to die. “It’s critical for people who are having stroke symptoms to get to a hospital as quickly as possible,” Dr. Pranav Kachhi, Medical Director of Emergency Services at Temecula Valley Hospital, said. “The expression we use is ‘time is brain’, meaning the more time that passes without treatment, the more brain cells are likely to die and cause permanent brain damage.” Early treatment by specialists can minimize brain damage and potential disability, or even make the difference between life and death. Knowing stroke symptoms, calling 9-1-1 immediately and getting to a hospital are critical. A Designated Stroke and STEMI Receiving Center for San Diego and Riverside Counties Temecula Valley Hospital is now a designated Stroke and STEMI (heart attack) receiving center for San Diego and Riverside counties.

When Temecula Valley Hospital first received the Stroke Ready Hospital designation in April 2014, it recognized the hospital as the first in Southern Riverside County equipped with the necessary resources to treat and manage stroke patients. Saving More Lives with Telestroke To ensure that every stroke patient has access to specialist care 24/7, Temecula Valley Hospital introduced TeleStroke, a two-way video communication system that connects patients with board-certified neurologists at UC San Diego Health. Through a secured video link, the specialists can examine patients, review test results and initiate treatment — in real time — with the hospital’s ER staff. “An emergency like a stroke doesn’t respect schedules”, Dr. Kachhi said. “With TeleStroke, we can have a neurology team available quickly, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” To learn more about Temecula Valley Hospital’s stroke and STEMI designation, visit www.temeculavalleyhospital.com. *www.strokeassociation.org

Learning the warning signs of a possible stroke – and acting FAST when they occur – could save your life or the life of a loved one. Use the FAST test to remember warning signs of stroke:

F = FACE Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = ARMS Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = SPEECH Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?

T = TIME If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you experience any of these symptoms, DO NOT WAIT! Call 9-1-1 immediately so that treatment can begin on the way to the hospital. Seeking immediate treatment can make a big difference in the quality of life after recovery. *www.strokeassociation.org

ynamic Duo Dr. Terry A. Rondberg and his wife, nutritionist Ruth Rondberg are doing amazing work – helping people overcome chronic diseases, kids with ADHD, debilitating arthritis, and much more through non-invasive natural means. “We integrate cutting edge neuroscience, nutrition, and proper hydration. We make good brains great with a holistic approach using state-of-the-art technology promoting regeneration on a cellular level and allowing for complete healing, starting with the most important organ we have – our brain – which controls 100% function in the human body.” Most people consider themselves “healthy,” if they look good and feel good, yet over half of all Americans have some form of chronic issue, including high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, anxiety, learning disorders, chronic hives, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, fibromyalgia, addictions, brain injury, PTSD, weight and many other conditions. These are conditions the Rondbergs successfully deal with. For people who truly have no “symptoms or conditions” they can help you prevent disease, which is the very definition of wellness. They partner with you so you can become your own doctor and be responsible for your own future health. Dr. Rondberg, a chiropractor for over 41 years, studied acupuncture in China and Ayurvedic medicine in India. “What’s amazing about the energy medicine we practice is how we have blended the ancient wisdom of eastern medicine, acupuncture and ayurveda, along with massage, chiropractic, modern psychology and neuroscience. Energy medicine corrects interference in the brain and nervous system on many different physical, chemical and emotional levels and provides us with the best potential for healing our body and mind; it’s like taking your brain to the spa.” Part of the initial consultation includes a brain scan using an electroencephalograph, i.e. qEEG. This is a medical device that produces a record of brain activity. This machine uses 20 electrodes placed on your scalp to monitor the electrical activity of your brain. Irregularities recorded indicate brain dysfunction which can help determine how healthy your brain is functioning. The brain controls 100% function of all your organs and tissue cells. EEG’s are also used to

establish clinical death in hospitals. Current neuroscience suggests energy medicine can balance out the brain and autonomic ner- Dr. Terry A. Rondberg and Ruth vous system. What Rondberg. Courtesy photo does that mean? When the control centers of your brain are healthy and working at optimal capacity, it promotes regeneration on a cellular level and restores your life support systems, the benefits are that you are healthy and have a better quality of life. According to the Mayo Clini, chronic stress puts your health at risk and can wreak havoc on your mind and body. The long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones — can disrupt almost all your body’s processes. This response puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including: • Anxiety • Depression • Digestive problems • Headaches • Heart disease • Sleep problems • Weight gain • Memory and concentration impairment To improve brain function Dr. Rondberg developed Bioenergy, a scientific method for correcting interference in muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the muscles of your upper neck. Relieving brainstem tension from this area of the body allows the body to function more efficiently and increase total wellbeing. It can also strengthen the immune system which helps prevent many diseases and conditions, including strokes, kidney failure, diabetes, alzheimer’s, heart disease, lung disease and cancer. The plain fact is chronic diseases can be prevented, and most people can restore their health without drugs and surgery. The Rondbergs help you protect yourself and your loved ones from chronic diseases by inspiring you to choose a wellness lifestyle.

t’s a happy marriage of weddings and wineries, especially in Temecula’s Wine Country. But, like the wines produced in the region, each of the more than a dozen wineries here which provides wedding venues offers its own nuanced flavor to any nuptial plans. If you want your wedding to feel like it rises above ordinary tying-of-the-knot, then Falkner Winery would be a natural choice, according to owner Loretta Falkner. “Falkner Winery is located at fifteen hundred feet in elevation, and we are higher up than other wineries so we can offer some of the best panoramic views around,” Falkner said, who also prides herself on having a personal “hands on” approach when it comes to organizing the wedding events. “And not only do we have spectacular views of surrounding scenery, gorgeous sunsets and the night lights of Temecula in the distance,” she added, “we are also the quietest winery venue for weddings because we are on a private road away from main thoroughfare in Wine Country.” Falkner Winery closes to the public after 5 p.m., Falkner said, giving wedding parties more privacy than occurs at other wineries who keep their doors open later. The winery offers two wedding packages. The first is the Pinnacle package which features a vineyard ceremony site and an Shown above a wedding at Callaway Winery in Temecula.

A second option is the Garden package which provides an outdoor ceremony and reception site adjacent to a rustic redwood wine tasting room and patio. Mount Palomar Winery has a hilltop garden area for a wedding ceremony and reception as well as another reception area located near the winery below. “Our La Bella Vista ceremony site, which includes a gorgeous walkway beneath vine-covered arbors, has gorgeous views of the skies, the vineyards and the mountains in the background,” Lauren Shields, wedding and event manager, said. “With the Italian-inspired terraces and cypress trees, there is an ‘Old World’ feeling there.” According to Shields, the ceremony site is dis-

tant enough from the winery to keep the wedding event private. The winery also differs from other wineries which offer wedding venues because Mount Palomar Winery only schedules one wedding event per day which also works to keep nuptial celebrations private, she added. Established in 1969, Mount Palomar Winery is the second-oldest winery in Temecula Wine Country, and has been a leading vineyard experimenter in the region initiating the trend to Mediterranean grape varieties. The winery is also unique because it is situated on 300 acres, Shields said. In addition to the Vista Del Valle, an outdoor reception area next to the ceremony site, there is the Barrel Room, an indoor reception area surrounded by walls of wine barrels that that bring a special ambience to a wedding party.

Mount Palomar Winery offers a hilltop garden area ceremony site featuring an ‘Old World’ feeling and choice of two reception areas.

Callaway Vineyard and Winery, the oldest and most established of the wineries offering wedding venues in Temecula Wine Country, features its outdoor West Lawn and South Lawn for marriage ceremonies. The West Lawn is renowned for its landscape views over the Cabernet vineyards and stunning sunsets over Temecula. The South Lawn is often in demand because of its views of the Temecula Valley and adjacent Zinfandel vineyards. There are multiple areas for receptions at Callaway Winery, including the Barrel Room, which is the most popular reception room there. “Our Barrel Room is the largest barrel room amongst the wineries and that makes us unique,” Samantha Scarpine, wedding and event manager for the winery, said. “Not only do all the barrels make it a beautiful setting for a wine country wedding, it can accommodate 240 guests.”

Other reception areas at the winery are the Reserve Room which, with its private deck and seating of only 40 guests, is perfect for more intimate nuptial celebrations, and the Vu Deck which can accommodate 200 guests and features a 300-degree view of the surrounding rolling hills of vineyards. The newest of Callaway’s reception areas is the outdoor courtyard which can easily handle seating for 900 guests. Getting dressed and ready for weddings can take time, but Callaway Winery has a policy of making the groom’s and bride’s suites available all day, Scarpine said, as opposed to other wineries which only allow the rooms to be used for a few hours. Despite the differences in wedding venues between those wineries which provide them, the wineries do work with each other too, according to Scarpine.

“Oh, yes, we all have a friendly interaction that benefits Temecula Wine Country as a whole, especially when it comes to promoting wineries as venues for weddings,” she said, adding that Callaway Vineyard and Winery, Mount Palomar Winery, Wiens Family Cellars, Wilson Creek Winery and others often share expertise and information about venue planning. These are just a few of the wineries which offer wedding venues in this region. There are several other vintner establishments in Temecula Wine Country which provide sites and accommodations for weddings, and the Temecula Valley Winegrowers’ website, temeculawines.org lists a barrel full of recommended

For prospective brides and grooms wanting to make the day that you say “I do” an unforgettable experience, having your wedding at a winery in Temecula Wine Country is a great choice. Giving a bottle of wine is an experience unto itself. Rather than handing over something with no familiarity, produced hundreds if not thousands of miles away, consider giving the gift of local wines. Starting at $15 per bottle (or even less with discounts) and upwards of $60 a bottle, the choices are sure to please any palate, from novice to connoisseur. While supporting local businesses, it also shows the gift giver has taken time to learn about the wine and perhaps share something about themselves and the area in which they live. Stocking up on wine also takes away the hurried stop to pick up a hostess gift for a holiday meal, a last-minute gift for the unexpected party, and allows one to have a selection of wine on hand for visitors and guests during the season. Presenting a bottle of wine is more than handing it over. Part of the experience is telling the story behind the bottle. Tell of the sunny afternoon with the unexpected input of the winemaker, in person, telling the story of the vineyard or the bottling. A little research and time The first rule is to take time away from the crowd. Going to a winery on a weekday allows more face-to-face time with the staff than on a weekend with the crowd factor. Spending time with knowledgeable tasting room staff is a great asset in helping make a decision. Make sure to take tasting notes. The asterisk next to a wine menu description means nothing a week later. Giving the gift of a wine club membership to business associates, vendors and clients tells them regularly how much they and their business are appreciated. Wines will arrive on a regular basis from the winery with only a first-time effort from the giver. Some wineries do custom labels for gift giving. Imagine a label with a company logo or family photo wishing “Happy Holidays” or “Happy New Year.” Winter 2016

You’ve decided to make the leap, ask her to be your bride. The problem is you don’t know the first thing about choosing an engagement ring, and when it comes to the most important day of your life, you want to be sure you make the right choice. While your significant other might not be materialistic and care for a flashy ring, you do want to buy her something that she will like; after all, she will be wearing it for the rest of her life.

Put a Ring On It from cut to color, your guide to the

perfect engagement ring by Stephanie C. Ocano

Become familiar with the terms

Band: The band is the circular part of the ring that encloses the finger. While it can be made from a combination of metals, it is usually made of gold, silver, or platinum. Gold is yellow-orange in its natural state but will vary in the yellow hue depending on the amount of carats. Less-pure gold will embody a lighter yellow color. “White gold” is gold that has been plated with another metal (typically rhodium) to give off a silver appearance. It is also alloyed with metals to give the mixture an off-white color. Platinum is strong and naturally silver in color but may dull slightly over time from its mirror finish. Setting: The piece that holds the gemstone in place is referred to as the setting. This may be pronged or invisible, depending on your preference. A setting with a bezel or at least six prongs is safer for a ring that will go through a significant amount of use and activity. Gemstone: This is the feature piece of the ring, usually a diamond. It is also occasionally referred to as a “rock.” The 4 C’s: When speaking about an engagement ring you will always come across this phrase. They are the carat, color, clarity, and cut of the diamond. The carat refers to the unit of measurement of the diamond and the weight, not size. The color of diamonds varies and depends on personal preference and budget. Colors are graded from D – colorless and rare – to Z. D-F are colorless, G-I are near colorless, K-M are faint yellow, N-R are very light yellow, and S-Z are light yellow. Diamonds grading from D-I are almost identical when they are mounted. The less imperfections in a diamond, the greater the clarity and the more light that is reflected. The scale goes from VVS1 and VVS2 to VS1 and VS2 for very slight inclusions to S1 and S2 for slight inclusions. I1, I2, and I3 are imperfect diamonds. The cut of the diamond indicates its shape. This can vary from round to princess cut. The 5th C: This is the cost. A cubic zircona is indistinguishable from a diamond except by a jeweler or other expert. It is softer than a real diamond and may dull over the years because of that. Lab diamonds are also an alternative to real diamonds and generally cost 5-10% less than a real diamond. Another alternative to saving some money is reducing the size of the diamond. The price relies heavily on the size of the diamond, and a diamond of less than a half-carat will be a few hundred dollars.

Find out her ring size

Whether you decide to do this first or last, you are going to need to know her ring size. The least invasive way to extract this information is to extract something else: a ring of hers that fits her finger comfortably. You can trace the inside of the ring onto a piece of paper or slip it onto one of your fingers, noting where the ring stops. Or, you could just act like a cat burglar and “borrow” the ring to take directly to a trusted jeweler. Just be sure to have it back before she notices it’s gone, and you get caught.

Look to others for help, but trust your own instinct

While you run the risk of ruining the element of surprise, you can look to outside sources for advice on the perfect ring to purchase. Ask her friends – those who can keep a secret – if she has dropped any hints on personal preferences she has when it comes to rings. Or better yet, take a look inside her jewelry box and see if you notice any similarities between the rings she has. Even if you don’t believe you know everything to choose the perfect ring, trust yourself. When it comes down to it, this is an engagement between the two of you. No matter what, the second you drop down to one knee and pop the question, she will instantly fall in love with her ring.

Ring around…her finger

Eternity Rings: Eternity rings contain more than one diamond embedded in the band. Stones can be arranged in various patterns such as pave set, channel set, bar set, and bezel set. The band can embody any shape of diamond, but brilliant and edge facet are the most popular choices. Other popular shapes include rectangular, square and princess shape. Solitaire Rings: This style of ring has been used for engagement ceremonies in western culture for centuries. A thin band contains a small diamond with studded diamonds around the ring. Solitaire rings are offered in various shapes and sizes. Most of the bands are two-toned enhancing the elegance and intricacy of the band. Gemstone Rings: This is the most common of rings since the focus is solely on the gemstone. While the diamond is still the number one pick, couples are now looking to other gemstones to use in their engagement rings. Sapphires, emeralds, and rubies are other choices, while birth stones are also popular picks when switching from a traditional diamond to something unique and new. Three-Stone Rings: In this design, three smaller diamonds are used to feature on the band. This adds more sparkle to the ring while also lengthening the range of the diamonds. Some of the prominent choices for diamond cuts in this ring are round, emerald, and princess. Exclusive shapes such as heart, oval, triangle, or radiant are also offered for three-stone rings.

Your choice of cut

While diamonds are still in the lead for the choice of gem used in an engagement ring, choosing the type of stone is usually quite easy. Choosing the cut, however, is an entirely different story. Again, trust your instinct on what you believe she would like best and fits her personality. Imagine it on her and go from there. Round: This is the most popular style for rings. A round cut goes with just about any setting and is said to be the best shape for reflecting light and “sparkling.” Princess: A square diamond cut that looks bigger due to its pointed edges. These look best on hands that have long fingers. Emerald: This rectangular cut is considered the most elegant and sophisticated of shapes as its longer design is reminiscent of Victorian times. Marquise: Although this design is also round, it looks longer than a round or oval cut diamond since it is pointed at two ends and thicker in the middle. Pear: Pear-shaped diamonds are a combination of marquise and oval cuts, creating a teardrop shape. Oval: Oval diamonds are long and round, and on rings, they create the illusion of longer fingers. Oval diamonds are also known for reflecting light very well. Heart: Shaped like an oval diamond but with a cleft on top creates the heart shape. However, finding a heart-shaped diamond that is evenly proportioned is difficult. Radiant: This cut is a combination of emerald and round diamonds. They can be square or rectangular in shape with rounded edges. Cushion: This cut is an older design that is still very popular today. The design is a larger, oval shape. At the end of the day, or proposal, it doesn’t matter what style of ring she has on her finger. What matters is the love you hold for one another and the commitment you are making to be hers for the rest of your days. Even if you don’t know everything about rings, cuts, and colors, you know you are meant for one another. After all, once everything is said and done, the only two people that have to be happy with a specific ring are one boy and one girl.

Great Gifts for

Every holiday shopper ends up with at least one loved one on their shopping list for whom they can’t seem to find anythingr. Some people seem to have it all, while others may be less than forthcoming with regard to items they may need or want. Many seniors tend to fall into the latter category. Shopping for holiday gifts for seniors can be difficult if shoppers don’t know what seniors want. But the following are a handful of gift ideas that might make this holiday season that much more special for seniors. Books A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the past year.

Gym membership According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost. Travel gifts Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, some new luggage or a Global Hotel Card™ sponsored by Orbitz®, a gift card that can be redeemed at 70,000 hotels across the globe, is sure to please. Family time Shoppers who are especially stuck on what to get seniors for Christmas can just resolve to spend more time with their elderly loved ones. Many seniors genuinely have everything they need, and such men and women may only want to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. Make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time with the special seniors in your life if the perfect gift is eluding you.

As enjoyable as the holiday season may be, quite a number of people admit to feeling pressured by the demands of shopping, wrapping and hosting events. According to a poll from the American Psychological Association, up to 70 percent of people feel stressed out by a lack of time and/or money during the holidays. Stress can take its toll during the holidays. But stress does not have to turn this festive time of year into something less enjoyable. By removing some of the work involved in holiday planning and hosting, individuals can free up time and enjoy a more relaxing holiday season. For example, holiday hosts may spend several weeks organizing their holiday meals, hours shopping for the ingredients and still more time preparing and cooking the food. By enlisting the services of a professional caterer, hosts can still throw festive parties with great food while letting someone else deal with the stress of meal planning. When you decide to have your holiday party catered, keep a few factors in mind as you consider your options. Recommendations – If you have never used a local caterer before, seek recommendations from neighbors and friends. There are many different types of caterers, and some restaurants even provide catering services. Recommendations can help hosts find the right caterer for the style of gathering they’re hoping to host and help them avoid caterers who may not be the best people to work with. Timing – The holiday season is a busy time of year for many businesses, caterers included. The sooner the contract is negotiated, the better. Lock in the date and desired foods as soon as you decide to use a caterer. The longer you wait, the more your options dwindle, as caterers’ schedules tend to book up quickly come the holiday season. Have a second-favorite caterer at the ready in case the first one is booked solid. Packages – Some caterers will only provide the food. Others are full-service providers and will bring much of what’s needed to entertain. This can include cutlery, plates, chafing dishes, napkins, linens, condiments, and more. Understand fully what each potential catering package includes. It may be worth spending a little more for a package that’s all-inclusive rather than saving money on a package that requires you to do a lot of work. Something special – Holiday hosts can personalize catered affairs by including one signature dish or drink. If drinks don’t seem like a good fit, consider creating a dipping sauce, glaze or another homemade item. This puts a personal touch on the meal with minimal effort. Winter 2016

Brighten your door with this classic wreath Conversation flows easily over a homemade table centerpiece by Sarah Bates

H

oliday decorations in retail stores are tempting homeowners earlier than ever this year; however, Fallbrook Garden Club members Margaret-Ann Ashton, Dee Brooks and long-time resident and garden expert Donna Schaffer say, “Before you buy, look around you!” In Fallbrook, fresh materials for holiday decorations grow year ’round. A wonderful benefit of our mild climate is its prevailing green landscape, never-ending blush of flowers and trees laden with fruit. When decorating for December holidays, each of these three experts in flower and greenery arranging sharpen their pruning shears, loop a basket over an arm and step outside. “I like to use Toyon berries,” says Dee Brooks. Their flash of bright red against deep green leaves typify a traditional color

scheme. Toyon is a California native plant that flourishes in our area, both in wildlands and in gardens planted with native plant materials. Another red berry that holds its color and stays on the stem through December is Pyracantha. Brooks also likes to use bunches of pepper berries trimmed from California Pepper trees. Schaffer adds sprays of Nadina berries. Although their fresh color is vibrant, they may drop berries earlier than the other two plants, she said. Using these plants for décor outside has a side benefit: birds love them! Look to your own garden and landscape for these plants or ask neighbors if you can clip a few stems. A friendly warning, though: if you spot attractive foliage in a stranger’s landscape or along a public road, make sure you ask permission to cut. Margaret-Ann Ashton warns

against “road-side-a,” a coined word meaning “plants you see along the roadside that may grow on private property.” And, in November and December, beware of the brilliant red vine weaving through the fall landscape. It’s poison oak. For the most recognized of December holiday decorations, Ashton and Brooks suggest a variety of pines, cedars and fir trees. Schaffer combines many varieties of greens along with trimmings from conifers to craft wreathes, swags and table centerpieces. She selects from rosemary, holly, eucalyptus and Protea. “Magnolia leaves are beautiful during December,” adds Ashton, referring to their broad, dark green and shiny surface with tawny red undersides. Like rosemary, any woody herb will stand up to a month-long decoration if given water or used in a cool outside area. Thyme, some of the sages and marjoram fall into this category. Avoid Mexican Sage in an indoor area; its pungent odor is overpowering. Variegated Pittosporum with its leaves of cream and green add light to an otherwise all-green arrangement. The silvery shimmer of Westringia almost glows. Choose inexpensive fresh fruit to add color to allgreen arrangements or to highlight red berries. Golden pears, burgundy pomegranates, green apples and limes, even bright orange persimmons mounded in a bowl surrounded by greenery reflect a festive holiday spirit, Ashton said. She’s a professional florist who speaks with authority on all subjects “floral.” Dee Brooks likes to add red Carnations or white Spider Chrysanthemum to arrangements. “Trim and stick the stems into a tiny vial of water that can be affixed to an arrangement with wire,” she said. These inexpensive flowers are plentiful and available at supermarkets. Brooks is a certified flower show judge and has chaired Fallbrook’s Garden Club show several times. She reminds amateur arrangers of a height rule for a table centerpiece. “The overall height should be no greater than the length of a forearm,” she said, then demonstrated by resting her elbow on a table and placing her chin on her closed fist. Donna Schaffer suggests trading trimming decorations like raffia bows, dried cones and discarded Christmas ornaments with friends to create decorations specific to your own home. She collects decorations year ’round and offers them to guests crafting holiday decorations in her sunny garden. Schaffer is well-known in garden circles for her annual greenery parties in Fallbrook and in Long Beach. All three women agree that using family heirlooms, cultural collections or hobbies that reflect a homeowner’s family life are important to decoration. Brooks, whose roots are in Scandinavia, arranges holiday bouquets in painted tin pitchers. In Ashton’s family, a discarded

bird’s nest that typifies rebirth is always evident. Ashton also combines old with the new by combining dried materials with fresh ones. “I grew artichokes just for their blooms,” she said. Once dry, the bristled heads can be left natural or sprayed gold or silver. A Manzanita twig wreath embellished with dry artichokes, papery-petaled hydrangea blooms and silver ribbons hangs on the entry wall of her home. She also clips supple grapevine trimmings, then shapes them into wreaths to dry then hold fresh greenery and sprigs of berries tucked neatly into their twisted form. Whether you’re a decorating novice or an old pro, remember the wise advice of these three experts: “Before you buy, look around you!” Then, sharpen your pruning shears and go outside, because fresh materials for holiday decorations grow year ’round.

This long, low table centerpiece was created using fresh materials growing locally.

Reeder Media’s Highlights of

Marketing

by Lee Yates

Holiday marketing is using special events as the context for your business’ next advertisement, promotion or overall branding strategy. Using these time-specific tools highlights your company’s attention to the present moment: the “here and now.” However, effectively executing a holiday marketing strategy requires careful planning and coordinated action. Here are some tips for boosting your business during the holiday season: Use celebration to your advantage! Above all else, the holidays are all about having a fun and memorable time. Create content with this holiday spirit in mind, as people are often likely to respond positively to festive feelings of nostalgia. Take an extra step with your creativity, try to evoke earnest emotions and make your next customer’s experience their new best memory! Give and you shall receive! Another great tradition to utilize is the gift of giving. Special calendar events are already associated with deals and discounts, so you might as well offer something too! Take a chance on something you’ve been meaning to showcase or plan a promotion that you know will generate some buzz as well as business. Deliver your presents through multiple chimneys! These days, people receive information and interact with others in countlessly different ways. Some may read the newspaper while others may check a particular website. In fact, some online users only

use specific social media platforms. As a solution, be sure to spread your message and content via as many channels as possible. The more unique audiences you reach, the higher your chances become for making a sale! Don’t let them sneak up on you! Survey data from eMarketing.com shows that almost 20 percent of people begin their holiday shopping before September. It is important to begin planning your overall strategy even earlier. Develop a timeline of weekly focus topics and even a rough outline of what your content will be, especially for months with multiple occasions. Meeting these deadlines can be challenging, but the benefits that the holiday shopping spirit can bring are much bigger! Start the next year on a strong foot! Best of all, successfully completing a holiday marketing campaign can act as great foundational training for future marketing efforts. Maintain the team structure and systemized workflow you established. Continue to develop new strategies and fix issues with older ones. Take your wisdom with you into the next year and transform it into wealth for your business! Keep these helpful guidelines in mind in the coming weeks. Best of all, they can apply to any holiday, not only the end-ofthe-year season!

Fallbrook man indicted in mortgage fraud scheme

SAN DIEGO − Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced on July 12 that six Southern California individuals were indicted on 135 felony counts for operating a mortgage fraud scheme throughout Southern California and the Inland Empire, preying on homeowners facing foreclosure. One Fallbrook man, Marcus Robinson, was indicted in the scheme. According to the attorney general’s office, the case is being prosecuted by attorneys in the Attorney General’s Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, created by Harris in 2011 to prosecute mortgage fraud at every step of the process. Jacob Orona, Aide Orona, John Contreras, Prakashumar (“Kash”) Bhakta, Robinson, and David Boyd were indicted by a grand jury

on 135 felony charges, including conspiracy, grand theft, filing false or forged documents, and identity theft. Robinson, was arraigned Monday, July 11, in San Diego Superior Court. “I created the Mortgage Fraud Task Force in 2011 to ensure that we tirelessly protect Californians struggling to stay in their homes from those who would prey upon them for profit,” said Attorney General Harris. “This indictment is result of a joint effort to remain vigilant in the investigation and prosecution of those who attempt to defraud homeowners through the mortgage process. I thank our Mortgage Fraud Strike Force and California Department of Justice Special Agents, as well as our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, for their efforts on this case.”

According to the attorney general’s press release, the defendants promised homeowners who were underwater on their mortgages that they could provide legal remedies to avoid foreclosure, convincing homeowners to stop making mortgage payments and instead pay them $3,500 to start with an “administrative process,” plus $1,000 every month and separate amounts to allegedly file legal documents. The defendants filed bogus petitions and court pleadings and recorded false deeds in county recorders’ offices, causing over $4 million in loses while failing to halt any foreclosures. The fraud stretched through San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles counties. The indictment was delivered following a two-week special

statewide grand jury convened in San Diego County. If convicted, Jacob and Aide Orona face over 90 years in prison; Contreras and Prakashkumar face over 70 years in prison; Robinson faces over 28 years in prison, and Boyd faces over 18 years in prison. The arrests and arraignments are the culmination of a joint investigation by the Federal Housing Finance Agency Office of the Inspector General (FHFAOIG), the Attorney General’s Financial Fraud and Special Prosecutions Section (FFSPS), the California Department of Justice Bureau of Investigation, and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, Real Estate Fraud Unit.

tech gifts for 2016 Five new and exciting items that are sure to please the tech savvy person on your list.

Mi Box

Mevo Camera

Choosing a streaming service can be complicated; however, if you have an iPhone, Apple TV works seamlessly. Amazon Prime subscribers who get free TV shows and movies will enjoy the compatibility of Fire TV. Chromecast, although simple and inexpensive, doesn’t offer a remote control or homescreen experience. Roku is a hybrid, but adding 4K and HDR, makes it pricey. Mi Box from Xiaomi is a new feature-rich yet budget-friendly choice for a streaming TV box. It runs on Android 6.0 TV, is easy to use, supports voice controls, Google Cast™ and 4K HDR Video; you get the best of Google, including voice search as well as Google Play movies, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Sling TV. Notably, you do not get Amazon Prime Video. Like Chromecast, you can “cast” video and audio – but not Google Photos as a screensaver – directly from your smartphone to your TV screen. 3-D gaming and local file playback (Android advantages) will be limited by the 8 GB of storage. For $69, you get a smart little box, a remote control, a $50 Sling TV credit, a $5 Vudu credit, CBS All Access, several free months of Pandora premium service, AND an HDMI cable (worth at least $20 by itself).

The first stand-alone live event camera (no rig needed) will allow you to livestream to Facebook and edit your video production on the fly: one camera, multiple shots, controlled by your iPhone. It’s like having a TV studio in your pocket, with tools that let you zoom, pan and cut with ease. For example, you can tap the subjects in a given shot and transform a single frame into multiple live shots and each edit automatically becomes a part of the final cut. You can then stream live via Livestream or Facebook live or share the production later. The simple small portable camera is discreet and unobtrusive; the app provides real-time editing for a high-quality production. This product was selected Best Camera of the Consumer Electronics Show 2016.

Winter 2016

SHAVETECH™ USB-Charging Razor Perfect for the “on-the-go” guy, this sleek, lightweight, smart phonesized shaver can be charged through any USB port, eliminating two travel problems; carrying a heavy, bulky electric shaver and carrying around an electric cord that needs a specific outlet. Great for international travelers since a converter is no longer necessary. The USB plug is built into the base and conveniently flips out for use with any USB charge source. The charge is good for thirty minutes of shaving, about 3-4 full shaves. The ShaveTech Razor – powerful, compact, stylish and flexible – is available in lustrous black or fresh white and retails for $40. It comes with a protective soft pouch and a cleaning brush for the super thin net foil to maintain peak cutting capability.

Perfect for the wine and spirits enthusiast. Want to infuse your spirits with the aromas and flavor of oak and age them in a fraction of the time it would take in a barrel? Try the Oak Bottle made by Joel Paglione. Typically, a wine can be aged in the Oak Bottle in as little as 12-24 hours. The longer the aging process, the greater the oak infusion. The Oak Bottle can be used with any wine and spirit, chardonnay to cabernet, bourbon to brandy, and can be re-used over and over. The bottle is easy to clean, but “priming” the Oak Bottle with other spirits and alcohols can add multiple complex flavor profiles and notes. Theoretically, you can achieve the mathematical equivalent of two years aging in a traditional oak barrel in just two months in an oak bottle due to less volume and more surface area which allows the flavor to be absorbed more quickly. The bottles are made from American White Oak sourced from responsible harvesters in the southern United States; each bottle is hand-sanded, charred and dried in natural sunlight. Starting at $60, you may want to get more than one for your different alcohol types.
