Grandmother Oak by Bill Zimmerman

With its scenic vistas, rolling hillsides and natural granite rock outcroppings, Menifee is a place of true aesthetic beauty. However, one of Menifee’s most unique natural features is hundreds of years old and still alive today. Menifee is home to the “Grandmother Oak,” as it is known by our Native American friends. The stately tree is located on the Wickerd Farm on Scott Road. The Grandmother Oak is a Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), one of the largest trees of its species, and thought to be over 500 years old. With permission, residents visiting the Wickerd Christmas tree farm may walk to the Grandmother Oak tree and enjoy its size and beauty. Standing adjacent to its main trunk, viewers are in awe of the vast canopy of shade that it provides. It evokes a feeling of pride and respect when we consider that the Native 4

Americans who originally inhabited this area found a staple food supply from the acorns of local oak trees like this one. We are fortunate to have this historic natural wonder still growing strong in Menifee.

Wickerd Farm is open to the public in the fall offering a pumpkin patch, hay rides, Christmas tree farm, tours and more.

The Motte Historical Museum is a hidden treasure in Menifee. It displays decades of history from the Roaring 1920s to the Nifty 1950s. The interior has life-size nostalgic photos, a 1950s diner, jukebox, soda fountain, art deco cinema and vintage popcorn and Coca-Cola machines, plus much more. The museum’s collection of antique cars is amazing. Most of them are local to the community such as the 1950 Chevy Deluxe, which once belonged to the grandmother of 5th District Supervisor Marion Ashley. The museum commemorates how the valley has grown and changed. It hopes to encourage the community to continually preserve, teach and educate others about local history. Following is information about the museum’s development and what it offers the public. Motte family history The Motte family is one of the oldest pioneering families in the Perris Valley. Business records indicate that Alphonse Motte and his brothers immigrated to America in the late 1880s from Gap, France with an interest in sheep and agriculture. In the 1930s John Victor (eldest son of Alphonse Motte) took on his two brothers, Frank and Charles, as business partners. They called their business the “Motte Brothers.” The Mottes became an active family within the valley, concentrating on crops such as potatoes, onions and grains. Their farms spread over parts of Perris, Romoland, Nuevo and Lakeview. By 6

by Robbie Motter 1944 the transition was complete; the Mottes were now well established farmers within the valley. By the 1960s, John Victor established his own farming operation with his two sons, Leon and John, naming it Motte and Sons. Ever present in the valley and keen to changing trends, a decision was made for the family corporation to also become active in real estate and development opportunities. John and Evelyn Motte privately founded the museum through their estate. Their aspirations were to showcase the history of the pioneer families who first settled in the valley, their antique car collection and document the area’s agricultural roots. Therefore, the museum was made possible by the JEM Foundation to do just that. And in 2007, Motte Historical Museum, Inc. became established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Car collection In 1951, John Victor Motte bought a 1926 Chevrolet Touring car for $15, overhauled the engine, and restored it in the late 1970s. That Chevrolet was the car that began the private collection and fueled the Motte brothers’ desire to restore antique automobiles. The Chevrolet Touring car is on display at the museum and the preservation of the rest of the restored automobiles continues today. SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2015

Classic car shows Each April the museum hosts its annual Classic Car Show, which features exhibitors, food vendors, crafters and usually a live band. Trophies are given to the top three winners in each class. Romola Farms Barn Leon E. Motte and his wife Darlene built the Motte’s Romola Farms Barn in 1985 with architect Robert Morris. Robert Morris has done much architectural design in downtown Temecula and is known for his wrought iron work and western artistic touch. After building the barn from all salvaged materials, the Mottes sold produce for about 10 years before leasing it out to other food vendors, such as Tom’s Farms and Hamshaw Farms.

Romola Farms to Romoland to Menifee The surrounding community began as “Romola Farms,” developed by the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1925. Small ranches of four to five acres were offered for the cultivation of fig trees. The project became so popular, it was decided that the Ethanac Post Office across the highway from Romola Farms, should have its name changed to the Romola Post Office. When the Post Office Department requested another name to avoid confusion with San Diego County’s Ramona Post Office, the name was changed to Romoland Post Office. The area of Romoland was then voted in to be part of the new City of Menifee on October 1, 2008.

Events venue The Motte Historical Museum is a great place to hold an event. The barn is available to rent for a wedding or party. Table and chairs can be provided for up to 200 guests. In fact, the Menifee Valley Chamber has held several events at this location. There are always some great events that take place at the museum that the public can attend. Visiting the museum Admission to the museum is free though a dollar donation per person is appreciated. Children ages 11 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Hours of operation are: Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Open first and third Sundays of the month, 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. All hours pending special events and holidays. Menifee is ‘Moving’

Looking back, the City of Menifee had an exceptional year in 2014 in several key areas, including becoming one of the fastest growing cities in the state, and the second fastest growing city in Riverside County, with a population of close to 85,000 residents. Menifee is also one of the safest cities out of the 25 communities in Riverside County, based upon violent crime statistics in 2013. At an all-time high, there are over 75 development projects moving forward in the city, including over 100 homes receiving new building permits on a monthly basis. The new Audie Murphy Ranch Sports Park opened in May 2014, and features multi-purpose fields, a baseball field, a full size basketball court and a skate park. Menifee’s median housing value in September 2014 was recorded at $307,014, which shows there is great value in owning a home in the community. Several new retail and restaurants opened in Menifee last year including Ulta Beauty, Justice, CVS, Applebee’s, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Jersey Mike’s Subs, the Flame Broiler, Fitness 19 and many others. Looking ahead in 2015, Menifee has several new retail developments that will begin to come on line, including Town Center Marketplace located at the southwest corner of Newport and Haun roads. This exciting new project will consist of 85,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, including Petsmart, Party City, Kirkland’s,

Aldi’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, The Habit Burger Grill, Sonic, El Pollo Loco, Jimmy John’s and more. Other projects moving forward include the Shoppes at The Lakes located at the southeast corner of Newport and Menifee roads, the Menifee Crossroads Walmart Supercenter at Scott and Haun Roads, the new Menifee Union School District Student Education Center on Haun Road located across the street from Menifee City Hall, and the Menifee Town Center located off Newport Road and Town Center Drive that will have a Krikorian Movie Theatre Entertainment Complex with bowling alley and restaurant, and will one day be known as the focal point of the city and a retail and entertainment hub of excitement for residents. The city is also moving forward with over $100 million in Capital Improvement projects including construction of the Newport/I-215 Interchange Widening project and design of the future Holland Road Overpass. Beginning in 2015, the city and the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce will launch a new website called WWW.SHOPIN MENIFEE.COM. This is a great way for Menifee residents to shop at local stores and restaurants that will generate additional sales tax to benefit quality of life needs such as additional police, fire, and parks. With all of the current and new projects on the horizon, the increase in demands from residents, and a premium housing stock, Menifee clearly is “Moving” in the right direction.

Most Notable Settlers

enifee Valley was a peaceful setting in the 1800s for explorers, miners and families looking to homestead. Following is information on some of the valley’s most notable settlers. The City of Menifee was named after Luther Menifee Wilson, a miner from Kentucky who came out west in the 1880s to seek his fortune after the railroads were built. He owned about 200 acres of land, had various mining claims and established the Menifee quartz mine located where current day Holland and Murrieta roads cross. William Newport was another early settler who came to the valley to seek his fortune. He was born in England in 1856 and immigrated to the United States in the 1870s to study farming in and around Los Angeles County. In 1885, he bought 2,000 acres of land in Menifee Valley on the north side of Newport Road between Murrieta and Bradley roads.

Robert Kirkpatrick came to the valley from Tennessee with his wife Betsy in the 1850s and established a ranch at the southeast corner of Newport and Antelope Roads. Robert’s eldest son Luther Menifee Wilson Courtesy photo William and his wife Callie built a large house on the land in 1882 and continued farming. They had nine children and Callie established the valley’s first school in 1890. Callie Kirkpatrick Elementary School was named in her honor. In 1904, the Wickerd Family homesteaded off Bradley Road. The city of Menifee offers a wide variety of recreation activities, from parks and trails to classes and activities there is an abundance of activities to get visitors and residents alike up and moving. Menifee offers miles of trails and owns seven parks available for use by those who are interested in spending time outdoors. All recreational opportunities offered by the city are important both economically and to the quality of life in Menifee, according to community services Director Robert Lennox. “The economic benefit to any city to have a multitude of recreational options, open space and trails is great because it encourages businesses to come here and people to come and live here,” he said. “The bottom line is people want to live where they have opportunities to recreate instead of having to travel … they want them nearby; they want them close.

Parks also offer an aesthetic benefit, said Lennox. “People’s property value goes up and it discourages blight and crime and other things,” he said. The city recently approved funding utilizing a grant to resurface three park playgrounds that were in disrepair with a rubberized surface to make them a bit safer for children to play on, said Lennox. “Some were very old as well,” he said. In an effort to improve parks, the city approved funding in December of 2014 to create the Parks, Trails, Open Space and Recreation Master Plan. The plan, which will seek community input, will serve as a ten-year guide that prioritizes goals and projects for the community’s outdoor amenities, said Lennox. “Ultimately, they are not city staff parks, they are community parks,” he said. “Our main goal is putting in parks that the community wants.” Complete park information can be found by visiting www.cityofmenifee.us and choosing Area Parks from the City Services menu.

obert Garcia, one of the top boxing trainers in the world, has recently become a Menifee resident. His father Eduardo Garcia, a Pro Boxing Hall of Fame member, and his brother Mike Garcia, the current featherweight boxing champion, have also relocated to Riverside County. For the past 20 years, the Garcia family has made headlines with their Youth Boxing Center in Oxnard, Calif. Robert’s parents moved to Riverside County a few years ago and he found it difficult with his boxing career to keep driving from Oxnard to visit them. So, he and his wife Karla visited Menifee, fell in love with it and bought a home in the city to raise their family. They have four children Robert Jr., 19, Eduardo, 16, Isabella, 10, and Alex, known as “Alvin”, 3. Now that Robert has relocated, he wants to help the community by maybe fully equipping and starting a local youth boxing program. If this happens, it would garner lots of attention because of the publicity he gets from his world class boxing events with HBO, Showtime, ESPN, NBC and DirecTV. He currently has eight world class champs training under him and all of them would be part of any program that he undertakes. Robert was born in 1975 in San Pedro, Calif. and grew up in Oxnard. He’s a retired professional boxer in the lightweight division, a former International Boxing Federation super featherweight champion and the current trainer of the year in boxing. He was trained by his father at the popular La Colonia Youth Boxing Club. He retired from boxing at 26 because his passion for the sport had evaporated. However, after taking 13 years off, his love for the sport has returned. It’s even stronger now that he’s decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a trainer.

Robert took all the knowledge he learned as a fighter, and from training with his dad, and has steadily climbed the training ranks. He’s now one of the most successful and sought-out trainers in the sport. In the last six years, he has put together an impressive list of champion fighters who have sought to train with him from across the world. The list includes Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios, Marcos Maidana, Jesus Cuellar, Evgeny Gradovich and his brother Mike. The success of what Robert has done with his fighters has been noticed by those who cover the sport. In 2011 and 2012, Ring TV.com named him the trainer of the year and the Boxing Writers Association of America named him the top trainer of the year. Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, who has known Robert since he turned professional, said in an article that his “background and his ability to connect with his fighters allows him to get the most out of the guys he trains.” But while Robert reached the top as a fighter, many believed he wasn’t cut out to be a boxer. He hated everything from having to make weight to dealing with all the prefight media hype that went along with being a world champion boxer. His easygoing nature also made it hard for him to generate ill will toward the people he was fighting. “I am not the type of person who likes to hurt people, or knock people out, but it was my job,” he said.

builds DeLorean Time Machine replica car by Robbie Motter

enifee resident Lenny Hochteil is such a fan of “Back to the Future” that he bought and converted a DMC DeLorean car into a replica of the movie’s time machine. He found the DeLorean just outside of Chicago after it had been wasting away for about a decade and decided it was perfect to bring to back to life as a time machine replica. He built it to have all the essential components featured in the movie and it can be seen in action in a YouTube video about DeLoreans. Lenny’s son Jeremy also loves the movie, which came out in 1985, so they enjoyed replicating the car together. It costs over $20,000 to buy a DeLorean and it cost Lenny just about as much to convert it into a time machine replica.

Lenny actually owns two DeLoreans and it was the first one that inspired him to buy the second and convert it. When he bought the first car, he wanted to surprise his family with it. So he asked them to show up at a specific place and time to meet him. Then he happily surprised them by arriving in the car dressed in “Back to the Future III” Old West clothes. Lenny travels a lot with his time machine car and is a guest at numerous events each year showing it off. The Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce had him bring it to the Pechanga Casino & Resort where they were holding their annual installation. It was thrilling for everyone present to see the car and have their photo taken with it. Lenny is a member of many car clubs, including the DeLorean International Club, Star Car Central and DeLorean Owners Association. He can be frequently found at car shows in Southern California. He loves to take his time machine car out at least twice a month to shows. Prior to becoming an avid “Back to the Future” fan he also was into model train building.

Bob O’Donnell Menifee’s former Postmaster for over 30 years and a First-Class Citizen

by Bill Zimmerman Bob O’Donnell, Menifee’s former postmaster, has lived in Sun City for over 43 years and has been actively involved in the community to make it a better place. He has served as a trustee of the Menifee Union School District since 1983, and a volunteer at the Menifee Valley Medical Center since 1994. In addition to these duties, he serves as a director with the Hospice of the Valleys, volunteers helping hospice patients and serves with the Menifee Crime Watch. O’Donnell was born in Philadelphia and came to California in 1968 with the Air Force and was stationed at March Air Force Base until 1970. In that year, O’Donnell began to work for the United States Postal Service as a part-time carrier. In 1971, the Sun City Post Office had just seven routes to serve the Del Webb senior community of 5,000 residents. There was only one rural route, which covered the Romoland,

Quail Valley and Canyon Lake communities. The rural carrier traveled 157 miles each day to accomplish all deliveries to what were mostly farmhouses and homesteads. In 1975, O’Donnell was promoted to assistant postmaster and in 1980, became postmaster. He remained in that position until his retirement in 2002. O’Donnell and his wife Alice have seven children and 14 grandchildren.

St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church

Celebrates its 50th Anniversary Before St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church was built in 1965, Fr. James Munnelly of the St. James Catholic Church in Perris offered one mass a week in the Sun City Town Hall. Parishioner Vincent Carbo generously offered a donation of $35,000 to the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino to build a much needed church in Sun City. The only stipulation Carbo made was that the parish be named after St. Vincent Ferrer, the patron saint of his home parish in Palermo, Sicily. Even after the large donation, an additional $100,000 was needed for construction. The response from parishioners for more donations was tremendous. They cashed in stocks and securities, dipped into savings and raised over the amount needed. San Bernardino architect Jerome Armstrong drew up plans for the church and a contract was awarded to Bob Meier Construction of Norco, at a bid of $136,000. Construction began in October 1965 and the first service was celebrated nine months later on June 5, 1966. The building fund flourished so construction of the church’s rectory began in 1966.

The church’s beautiful stained-glass windows, designed by an accomplished Holland artist, majestically complement the purity and simplicity of the modern sanctuary. The sacristy furniture was designed and installed by Brendan Murray, the brother of the first priest Fr. Sean Murray. He also designed and fabricated the baptismal font, a wooden replica of one of the great treasures of Irish antiquity, the Ardagh Chalice. O’Connor said that she watched her parents, who have been in the restaurant business for 30 years, and saw how much they enjoyed what they did. “I knew that they worked, really, really hard; they were always at the restaurant, but I couldn’t wait to get out of school and just go play restaurant.” Founded by a third generation Italian family in 1991 New York’s Upper Crust Pizza specializes in traditional thin crust, deep dish (Sicilian) or stuffed pizza by the whole pie and slice. We also specialize in made from scratch Lasagna, Stromboli, Spaghetti ‘n Meat Balls, salads, deli sandwiches, garlic knots and stuffed pin wheels.

Three years ago O’Connor had the chance to make her dream come true so she took it. “It was a good opportunity and the timing was just right,” she said, adding that the former owner had gotten to know her through her previous job with U.S. Foods as a Hispanic specialist. “He called the company and asked if he could have somebody come by and help with his business,” O’Connor said. “Once he got to know me, he offered the restaurant to me. I strongly feel that he gave me a great opportunity here in Menifee.” After she purchased Provécho Modern Restaurant, O’Connor changed the name to Provécho Grill so she could offer more than just Mexican food.

“My heart is in that mole, because one of my dad’s cooks at Guadalajara taught me how to make that and he made the best mole and I remember him taking his time making it with me.” “I wanted to have the ability to be more creative and offer more,” she said. All dishes are influenced by her Mexican heritage. bartenders, hostesses, bussers, runners, everybody all working together to achieve that goal,” she said. “The first year we felt blessed. We were the new kid on the block doing something crazy in a little community. It just made us feel blessed.” The second win gave O’Connor confirmation of her employees and how hard they all work. “It has raised the bar. otocross legend “Radical Ron Turner” began riding at the age of 12 in a small town in Arkansas. He was sneaking rides on his cousins’ bikes and it was obvious from the beginning that he had not just a natural talent for riding, but for racing and winning. At the age of 13 Ron got his first sponsor, entered a race and came in first place. He proceeded to win the next five races as well. His winning streak awarded him an astounding 947 wins throughout his career from 1969 to the late 1980s. And that’s just his motocross wins. Ron was also the premier Southern California test rider for Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Cagiva. He had the first single shock bike, the first water cooled bike and worked with ProAction Suspension as well. Some of his wins include the first Aloha Supercross in Hawaii in 1984, the first Golden State Nationals in Carlsbad in 1986 and Evel Knievel’s Snake River. Evel gave him a Harley Davidson for his win. Ron retired in 1990 and went back to Arkansas for a while. In 1997, he came back to Glen Helen Raceway to win his class at the 30

World Veteran Championship. It was then that he decided it was time to come back to Southern California. He passed the sign that said “Welcome to Quail Valley, Spark Arrestors Required,” which also had a picture of a motorcycle on it. How fitting, he thought. So he leased a home with an option to buy and has been in Quail Valley ever since. Ron went on to win the Vet Nationals two more years in a row. He and his wife Patti have been enjoying their home while he continues training anyone from beginner to professional and working on motorcycles. The couple has seen many changes in Quail Valley over the last 17 years due to much growth in Menifee. Before all the homes came in, Ron enjoyed riding around the hills. He had a lot to do with the building and design of the track in Lake Elsinore. His wife, three daughters and stepson also ride. While Ron tells stories of all the fellow greats he rode with, amazing places he went and people he met along the way, you can feel his passion for motorcycles. Menifee anchors more than just a corner of

State Senator Morrell’s New, Vast District

enifee’s location in a remote corner of state Senate District 23 hasn’t dimmed its importance to freshman officeholder Mike Morrell. Not long after Morrell took office in April, Menifee leaders took steps to ensure that their city had landed squarely on his radar screen. Local business and government leaders met with the newlyminted senator to familiarize him with what has become one of the fastest growing cities in the state. “Menifee was very pro-active in reaching out to the senator,” said Nick Calero, who serves as Morrell’s district director. “That was really appreciated. It’s a big district with a lot of diverse issues, but there’s a lot that unites it.” Over the past eight months, Morrell has had to adjust on the fly. First he had to adjust to his jump from the state Assembly, where he served for about three years, to the state Senate. Next he has had

to adjust to the addition of many new communities – including Menifee, Romoland and Nuevo – to his political purview. Morrell made his mark in the business world and community service arena before he set his sights on the state Legislature. He was a small business owner for more than 25 years in the title, lending and real estate industries. His community service included key roles with the Building Industry Association, Inland Empire Economic Partnership, the Inland Empire Prayer Breakfast and the Pacific Justice Institute. He served on the business advisory boards of several state legislators that included Bill Emmerson. Morrell then shifted gears and entered politics. He won his Assembly seat in 2010, where he served as a member of five standing committees. Those panels included Labor and Employment, Banking and Finance and Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy. Emmerson resigned his state Senate seat in December 2013 at about the halfway point of his second term. Emmerson’s resignation prompted Morrell to set his sights on the state Senate, and he became one of five candidates to vie for that seat in a March 25 special election. Morrell netted 63 percent of the ballots cast in the election. He avoided a run-off election by capturing more than a 50 percent margin of the votes. Morrell, 62, was sworn in April 3, and his track record in the Assembly won him some instant kudos from his new colleagues. “Senator Morrell is a man of principle and integrity,” Bob Huff, who serves as the Senate minority leader, said in a press release at that time.

“Based on his history of serving the needs of his constituents while he was in the Assembly, I have every confidence he will bring this same level of service to the Senate,” said Huff, R-Diamond Bar. Morrell’s geographical oversight multiplied as a result of his shift from the Assembly, where his district just served a portion of San SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2015

Bernardino County, to the state Senate. His current term ends in November 2016. Morrell presently serves on the Senate’s Health, Budget and Financial Review and Banking and Financial Institutions committees. His Senate district is about three times as large as his Assembly district and has double its population. He now represents a vast area that blankets about 1,500 square miles in three counties that is home to about one million people. The 23rd District edges into Los Angeles County, where it serves the Wrightwood and Mount Baldy areas. It takes in a vast and diverse chunk of San Bernardino County that includes Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Loma Linda, Highland, Yucaipa, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. The district also blankets a large swath of central and Southwest Riverside County. Those communities include Calimesa, Cabazon, Banning, Beaumont, San Jacinto, Hemet, Lakeview, Nuevo, Romoland and

Menifee. Menifee is in the southern corner of the district. “I think we’ve made a conscious effort to know the communities and the people,” Calero said. Besides introducing and voting on legislation, Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, helps constituents navigate state agencies, informs residents on laws and pending legislation and authors certificates and resolutions to noteworthy individuals and organizations. He offers intern positions to college students and uses brochures and other methods to stay connected to his constituents. Because Morrell’s district is so varied and far-flung, he and his staff hold regular office hours, typically at chamber of commerce offices, to meet with constituents, organizations or groups. The Menifee Chamber of Commerce hosts a monthly session from 10 a.m. until noon every second Tuesday. The Hemet / San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce hosts

America’s Veterans Drawn to Menifee The City of Menifee is home to many veterans who proudly served America during war and peace time. Here are biographies of some. by Robbie Motter Navy Veteran Donald D. Reed Donald said the duty he liked most was in Monterey, Calif. where he ran into lots of his old buddies who worked on the Berlin airlift, including many of the pilots. He enjoyed sharing stories about those days. His last tour of duty was at Moffett Field, Calif. After retirement in 1959, Donald worked for Lockheed, Hewlett Packard and Memorex in quality control. When it was time for him to retire from the private sector, he and his wife Florence moved to Roseville, Calif. They remained there for three years until deciding to move to Oceanside, Calif. to be closer to their daughter, grandson and great-granddaughter. In 1988, they relocated to a warmer climate in Sun City for his wife, who had serious arthritis problems. They built their home on Braddock Road. His wife passed away 14 years ago. He recently sold his second home in Sun City’s Core area and moved to Brookfield Cherry Hills five months ago. For many years he was active in Sun City’s Masonic organization. One of his favorite things is talking to other service people who served when he did. LaVerne and Martin Talbot 2014.

Army Veterans Martin and LaVerne Talbot Menifee residents Martin and LaVerne Talbot both joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and met each other during their service. He was in the infantry and she was an Army nurse. After basic training, Martin was deployed to several bases and the Philippines where he was wounded. He was sent to Winter General Hospital in Topeka, Kans. to recover and later discharged due to his wound. 3.5” x 2” LaVerne was stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., Winter General Hospital in Topeka, Kans. and Fitzsimmons Hospital in Patrick C Keplinger Denver, Colo. Donald D. Reed, 93, is originally from Sedgwick, Kan. and was born into a family of five boys. He was the middle son and all of his brothers, except one, were servicemen. He joined the Navy upon high school graduation in 1939 and retired as a chief petty officer after 20 years of active service and 10 years in the reserves. He was awarded with numerous medals during service to his country. Donald enlisted in Wichita, Kan. and got his first training at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. His career took him to locations in California, Washington, Alaska, Minnesota, Hawaii, Samoa and the South Pacific. The highlights of Donald’s service career were participating in a Berlin airlift operation to drop food behind the Berlin Wall and working in a VIP squadron in Hawaii that carried only dignitaries, admirals and other high ranking officers. He also remembers going to Samoa to take supplies and said they could see planes in the jungle that had been left behind due to the war. When the Korean War started, he was fortunate not to go to any conflict zones.

Air Force Veteran Phyllis Carmen Bailey Menifee resident Phyllis Carmen Bailey, 82, proudly wears a ball cap that says “Korean Veteran” and can always be seen around town with a smile on her face. In fact, she’s so friendly that she stops to talk to nearly everyone. She likes to eat almost daily at Boston Billie’s and if another veteran shows up, she won’t hesitate to share stories with them. She grew up on a dairy farm Courtesy photo in Long Beach, Calif. and loved to ride and rope calves. Her mother was an Army nurse and sometimes she accompanied her on base while she cared for wounded veterans returning from Japan. Phyllis remembers that they were so sad that she made them happy by dancing for them. When she was 19, she realized that most of her friends were coming back from the Korean War dead and it moved her to get involved. So, she joined the Air Force as a nurse and went to combat zones to care for the wounded as they were flown to stateside hospitals. Phyllis also worked at Selfridge Air Force Base where she cared for the wounded until they were well enough to be discharged. Many of them had shrapnel and loss of limbs so it wasn’t always easy for her to be cheerful, but she did her best. She felt blessed to be helping them. She loved the service, but had to leave to take care of family

when her mother had a serious heart attack. After leaving the service, she couldn’t get a full-time job in nursing so she went into dentistry and then embarked on other careers. In Huntington Harbor, Calif. she owned a bakery and catering business. She also raised grapes to sell to vineyards and make her own wine. Today, she loves to garden and grow vegetables when she has the time. Phyllis, who has been divorced for over 27 years, has two children and helped to raise five others. She moved to Menifee 20 years ago from Huntington Harbor. She was awarded with many medals during her service time and was honored recently to be given the Medic-Vac Medal. “I am so thrilled as it is beautiful; it has two crosses, one on the front and one on the back,” she said.

Navy Veteran Luis Hutchins Navy veteran Luis Hutchins has lived in Menifee for seven years and is involved in many local organizations so he can give back to the community. Luis is a proud alumni of Valley Forge Military Academy and College and joined the Navy in 1993 at age 17. He served five years active duty with three of those years on sea duty as a search and rescue crewman. He was stationed at North Island Naval Air Station in California, Anderson AFB in Guam and Whidbey Island Naval Station in Washington. He served on the USS Belleau Wood, USNS Kilauea, USNS Spica and the USS John F. Kennedy. He was awarded various medals for his service and left the Navy with the rank of E-4. Following active duty, he was a reservist for three years. After serving his country, Luis entered the gas and oil industry and has worked in it for 14 years. He’s a graduate of the College of Oceaneering in Long Beach, Calif. and is an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector, plus he holds multiple certifications through the International Code Council. Today he’s President/ CEO of Atlas D Consolidated/Hutchins Consulting/Professional Services Testing and Engineering. Some of his clients include Cal Trans and federal and state agencies. His company’s philosophy of having the right staff and tools and choosing the best clients has enabled him to win contracts on projects exceeding $3 billion in total build out cost. He and his company have received awards and recognitions, including nominations as Business of the Year from the Menifee Valley and Perris Valley

chambers. Also, Senator Mike Morrell recently nominated his company for the Top Chamber Award. Since he’s a veteran, Luis’ company has offered job training opportunities to fellow Courtesy photos veterans. Luis helps with community projects and his company recently donated building supplies to Menifee’s new Boys and Girls Club. He’s involved in local organizations such as the American Legion Post 593, Boy Scouts of America, Rotary Club, “One Eye Open” Toastmasters Club, Valley Young Professionals and the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce. He sits on the chamber’s board of directors and is co-chair of its annual Green Ball Golf Tournament set for March 13 at the Menifee Lakes Country Club. Luis is a devoted family man. He has three children, Sierra, Tyler and Liam and is engaged to Dannica Nicholls, owner of Dannicakes. Marine Veteran Sergeant Major Larock W. Benford Retired Sergeant Major Larock Benford has been a Menifee resident since 2005 and is originally from the East Coast. He was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island and moved during his high school years to the Great Lakes/North Chicago area of Illinois. He was athletic in high school and participated in wrestling, cross-country and baseball sports. During high school Larock was also a NJROTC Cadet and after graduation he joined the Marine Corps. In July 1979, he underwent recruit training with the 1st Battalion at MCRD in San Diego, Calif. His tour of duty took him to North Carolina, Kansas, California, Japan and Iraq. During these tours he acquired new skills to serve his country and earned promotions from Private to Sergeant Major. He is a former three-time All-Marine Wrestling Champ and an Armed Forces and World Military Champ. He was recognized as one of the Honor Graduates in NCO School (Class 1-84 [#3]), Drill Instructor School (5-85 [#2]), SNCO Career Course-Honors List (Class 5-91 [top 10%]), and SNCO Advance Course (Class 5-94 [#2]). In November 2002, under the Marine Corps Martial Arts program, he earned his Black Belt Instructor Belt. Larock’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star, Meri-

torious Service Medal (2nd Award), Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three stars, the Good ConCourtesy photo duct Medal with silver star and four bronze stars, and the National Defense Service Medal with two bronze stars. On February 1, 2010, Larock retired after 30 years of honest and faithful service to his nation and the Marine Corps. He’s currently a member of the 1st Marine Division Association, the West Coast Drill Instructor Association and is the 2014 Commandant of the Southwest Riverside County Marine Corps League Detachment 1057. He has an Associate’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision from Purdue University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from University of Phoenix. After retiring from the military, Larock opened a picture framing business and owns Benford’s Custom Matting and Framing.

Sun City woman is ‘Earth Angel’ who cared for over 80 foster children

hen Sun City resident Ella Vraines was about 30 years old and a young mother, she had major surgery and doctors held little hope that she would live. She promised God that if she lived to finish raising her children, she would find a way to help all children who needed care. Against the odds, Ella survived and was able to keep her promise to God a few years later when she became a foster parent. Ella, now 89, learned about foster parenting in the mid-1950s through friends who were doing it. She quickly decided that she and her late husband Peter should do it, too. The Vraines, who lived in Chula Vista, Calif. at the time, soon partnered with an adoption agency. They agreed to take care of all types of children, including babies with severe birth defects. With the help

of Peter and their four children, Ella was able to care for over 80 babies during a span of nearly 20 years. The first special needs child the Vraines fostered was born without tibia bones in his legs and had them amputated at the age of five months. Ella was determined that the boy would walk someday. With an undaunted spirit, she got him prosthetic legs and she and Peter designed a device to rehabilitate him themselves. They cut a hole in the center of a little table and strapped the boy in it. They walked him around in this device until he could walk by himself. He was eventually adopted thanks to the Vraines’ efforts to teach him how to walk. Another baby the Vraines took in weighed only eight pounds at five months old. Doctors told Ella

to just give the baby girl medicine and she’d be fine. However, Ella felt the baby needed to feel loved so she tenderly cared for her. The baby responded to Ella’s loving attention and gained four pounds in two weeks. She quickly grew into a beautiful little girl and was also adopted. Ella had the honor of fostering the first child to be adopted interstate from California to New Mexico. The historic adoption was chronicled in an article in the San Diego Union Tribune. Ella took time and care to make keepsake albums for each of the children she fostered to give to their adoptive parents. The albums contained the children’s pictures from birth until they were adopted. She also bought gifts for the children to give to their new brother or sister when they joined a family so the siblings wouldn’t be forgotten in the excitement of the adoption. Amazingly, one of the children Ella fostered named Harmony still keeps in touch with her by email and occasional visits. She came into the Vraines’ home when she was three years old and

stayed one year until she was adopted. Harmony once told Ella that if it wasn’t for her loving care, she wouldn’t be where she is today – a happily married mother living in San Diego County. Today Ella is considered to be an “Earth Angel” by many for all the care she provided to children in need. She’s a warm, charming and dynamic woman who’s still full of energy and has a heart that makes her want to keep giving to everyone. She’s proud to be a mother of four children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and have been a foster mother to over 80 children.

Jerome Robinson

Second generation member of the world famous Platters

by Robbie Motter Menifee resident Jerome Robinson has led an interesting life. The Vietnam veteran, former police officer and popular singer has traveled the world performing for sold-out crowds. He has been written about in newspapers and magazines across the country and received numerous awards, including a proclamation from the City of Banning for his performances there and a certificate of appreciation from President Barack Obama. He was born the son of a couple from Nassau, Bahamas, James and Barbara Burgess. They gave Jerome – then named Jerome Benjamin Alexander Burgess – up for adoption when he was just four weeks old. He was taken in and adopted “by a wonderful woman named Ruby Robinson,” he said adding that he had been told his entire life that his natural family had passed away by Ruby. So it came as quite a shock when Ruby called him while he was on the road with a group called The Spirit of St. Louis and told him his biological father was trying to get in touch with him. “He was living in Baltimore, Maryland and he had tracked me down. I did get a chance to meet him about two years before he passed away,” Jerome said. “It was a very emotional and unique experience.” Upon meeting his father, Jerome learned of a family he had never seen and of a father that wished to share his love. He was a big, tall gentleman with a full head of white hair,” Jerome said. He was able to pick him out of the crowd. “After I wiped the tears from my eyes there was nothing left for me to say,” Jerome said. Unfortunately Jerome’s father passed away just two years after they met. The experience was life changing for him. It led to Jerome to record his hit record “I Never Sang for My Father.” The song was part of the 1979 “Pieces of Love” album he recorded under the name Alexander Love, his stage name at the time. “I sent him a recording of the song and it was very emotional for him; It was a very beautiful song,” Jerome said. “The record did OK; it got some airplay.” 46

Jerome began singing and developed his love for music as a young child, singing with the children’s choir in Springfield Baptist Church, in Washington, Georgia. I was about six or seven when I was singing in the children’s choir,” he said. “I’ve basically been singing all my life.” Jerome, who is best known for his performances with the popular Second Generation Platters, did leave the music business for a while and became a police officer in Washington, Georgia. “I went to Vietnam and when I came back, that is when I joined the Second Generation Platters,” he said. Jerome has a repertoire of almost 600 songs, from “Sentimental Journey” to Credence Clearwater’s “Proud Mary.” Amazingly, he also has the ability to lend his voice to impersonations of such greats as Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Louie Armstrong, Neil Diamond, Dean Martin and more. He left the Second Generation Platters and struck out on his own, starting his own show and traveled throughout the United States for about a decade. “I was young and I wanted to go out on my own,” he said. Jerome eventually settled in Las Vegas where he performed for several years but when he was faced with a health problem, he decided to move closer to his son, Jerome Jr. who lived in Hemet at the time. “It wasn’t really serious, but it was serious enough that I felt I needed to be where my family could help me if I needed them.” The year 2003 brought about many changes for Jerome; he moved to Menifee from Las Vegas that year and he placed second in the NBC hit show “America’s Most Talented Seniors – Second Chance!” Jerome Jr. was gone a lot, according to Jerome so one day Alexander Love and the Love Affair: he decided to walk down to a Alexander Love (Jerome), John Shalakes (back), Chris Hughson (right). “They had Karaoke,” he said. “I sang Karaoke there and left, but when I went back again everyone was excited that I came back. One gentleman started taking me to different places to sing Karaoke.” From that point on, Jerome jumped back into the music scene, booking a gig in Idyllwild on Sundays from May through October that has lasted nearly 12 years. Jerome said he loves living in Menifee. The quiet lifestyle and chance to slow down and do what he wants to do for a change all agree with the 65-year-old crooner. “The quietness of it allowed me the chance to move at a slower pace; I was always moving,” he said. He loves the people he has met in Menifee over the years. But don’t expect this grandfather of two to slow down anytime soon; he continues to perform all over Southern California, including Beverly Hills, Las Vegas and many places locally. He delights audiences with his smooth sound and velvety tones twice a month at the Grand Oaks Steak House and at the French Valley Café

the last Friday of each month. “I’m working more here than I did when I was in Vegas,” he quipped. “I thought I would come here and be semi-retired, but that never happened.” Jerome also loves to give back to his community and has performed for many local organizations over the years. When not performing, he likes to show up on Monday nights at the Menifee Lakes Country Club to lend his talent to Karaoke night and always gets a standing ovation. In addition to his son, Jerome Robinson, Jr., now living in San Antonio, Texas, Jerome also has one grandson, Brandon, and one granddaughter, Sabrina. In February he will add a new greatgrandson to his family. All of his family now lives in Texas and he loves to visit them when he can. New Menifee Valley Boys & Girls Club F

or years parents had to shuttle their kids to Temecula or Murrieta to enroll in a Boys & Girls Club program. Now, thanks to the diligence of a few parents, volunteers and community leaders, a club has been established in Menifee. It opened last June. “It was something that our community really needed,” said Bill Zimmerman, a club board member. In 2013, a steering committee was formed by former Menifee City Council Member Sue Kristjanssen to explore ways to start a program in town. With the support of Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley, the club raised the necessary funds to incorporate. A board of directors was formed and nonprofit status was granted by the state. The board then found the perfect location for it at the shuttered Menifee Elementary School campus. John Whann, who had many years of experience at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Riverside County, was hired as executive director and then the doors were opened and the activities got under way. The club’s first event was a Family Day that included food, music, bounce houses and other children’s activities. Residents were given the opportunity to sign up for programs and apply to be volunteers. Annual membership in the Boys & Girls Club is $25, with specialty programs like guitar lessons and cooking classes offered for a

nominal fee. Following an enjoyable summer program, the word quickly spread that the Boys & Girls Club was the fun and affordable place for Menifee’s kids. In the fall, membership eclipsed at 500 kids. After-school programs include bus transportation from school, a Power Hour where homework assignments are completed and then programs designed to build social skills, character and responsibility. “Menifee’s new Boys & Girls Club is a real success story that illustrates how the efforts of a few visionaries can have a positive impact on the quality of life for children, families and our community,” Zimmerman said. “We are fortunate to have such a safe and positive place for our youth.” For information on the club and its programs, call (951) 246-8845, email info@menifeebgc.org or visit menifeebgc.org.

Menifee Valley Chamber to Host 2015 Southwest California

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL LUNCH MEETINGS The Southwest California Legislative Council was founded nine years ago as a coalition of local chambers. The original chamber founders were Murrieta, Temecula and Wildomar and later the Lake Elsinore and Menifee chambers joined the council. “The Menifee Valley Chamber is honored to be this year’s host,” said Dorothy Wolons, CEO of Menifee Valley Chamber. The luncheons will be held at Mt. San Jacinto College’s Menifee campus in room 805. Dates for this year’s monthly luncheons are: January 26, February 23, March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, August 17, September 21, October 19 and November 16. Mission Statement The SWCLC’s mission is to advocate on behalf of local business interest at a state level and support legislation that will encourage business growth or oppose bills that put additional burdens on California business. The focus of the SWCLC policy platform will be to support these primary care initiatives: Job Creation, Business Retention, Budget and Tax Reform, and Healthcare Reform. Under this, the organization has a broad platform that covers transportation and infrastructures, tourism, healthcare and pro-business leadership, as well as any policy or legislative initiatives that may impact local members. The SWCLC Board consists of 17 voting members, five representatives appointed by the board of directors from each of the original founding chambers of commerce of the SWCLC and one seat appointed by the Wildomar and Menifee chambers. The SWCLC voting membership shall be a general representative makeup of the total five chambers and a balance of industry representation throughout the region. The chair position is assigned to one chamber for a two-year term rotating thereafter among the three original chambers. The SWCLC board membership is open to all chamber members in good standing. SWCLC meetings are open to all members of the five chambers. All elected officials, or their designees, representing the region or individual cities are ex officio, nonvoting members of the SWCLC. Each year the SWCLC develops a policy platform consistent with SWCLC’s mission statement of local, state, and federal legislative issues for the following year. The Policy Platform shall be used to track local, state, and federal legislation that might have an impact on the Southwest California region. The Policy Platform shall be recommended to the board of directors of each chamber no later than their January meeting for discussion and approval. We welcome you to join us this year.
