Michelle Runnells Executive Director Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce

Welcome to the greater Menifee Area Sourcebook, featuring Menifee business and lifestyle information. Menifee’s nearly 50 square miles is centrally located in Southwest Riverside County along Interstate 215. With available land, a business friendly climate and a population of over 85,000 residents, Menifee is set to become a regional hub for commerce. New and longtime businesses alike are capitalizing on the estimated $400 million in sales leakage to nearby cities. We see the results as Menifee’s sales tax revenues have continued to increase for the eighth consecutive year, providing additional funding for important city services such as public safety, infrastructure improvements and creation of parks and community service programs. In its eighth year of cityhood, Menifee has reached significant milestones. The city’s $170 million Capital Improvement Program (CIP) is enhancing infrastructure and traffic flow and has resulted in attracting new businesses and restaurants that have successfully opened. Our CIP has propelled new businesses and amenities, including the Menifee Town Center Marketplace, several high-quality new housing developments, completion of Audie Murphy Ranch Sports Park, the Spirit Park, and plans to construct a new and modernized Fire Station #7. On behalf of the city of Menifee and the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce, thank you to our local businesses, restaurants and retail outlets. We value your contributions to our community. Together, we’re building Menifee’s future.

Thank you for choosing Menifee – it is a wonderful place! As the sixth-fastest growing city in California. And the second fastest growing city in Riverside County, Menifee prides itself on serving our residents, businesses and visitors in the most efficient and most cost effective way possible while building a comprehensive approach that helps Menifee’s economic stability, financial prosperity and cultural vitality. Menifee is investing more than $170 million in a 5-year, 10-project plan for infrastructure and traffic solutions. With four of the ten projects completed, the City’s goal is to improve access to local businesses and attractions in the city and drive new companies and amenities into city limits, as well as being a regional transportation system partner. The city council and staff are proud of what we have been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time, doing more with less, and providing the services and amenities that our residents, businesses and visitors find most valuable. This makes the City of Menifee an attractive place to live, play and work.

For Menifee resident, Rick Swanson, monster trucks are more than an obsession; they are a way of life. by JP Raineri

Rick Swanson’s journey into the popular sport began in 1970 when he built and modified a 1970 Ford Bronco purchased from his grandfather while in high school. Swanson soon realized that it cost more than his paycheck to keep up in the sport. He then decided he would take his Bronco to car shows as a way to earn money. His life began to radically change after he was taken aside by a feature editor of “Four Wheel Magazine” who wanted to do an article on the Bronco. Having the truck in magazines and showing the Bronco allowed Swanson to acquire sponsors for the truck. After showing the truck for many years, Swanson decided he wanted to build a monster truck. He sold the full size Bronco to pay for the frame, axles and four link bars. This was the beginning of Obsession, a truck in which he still competes to this day. Monster trucks are styled after pickup truck bodies, modified or purposely built with extremely large wheels and suspension, and used for competition, which sometimes involves the truck crushing smaller vehicles beneath its huge tires. Monster trucks can be featured alongside motocross races, mud bogging, tractor pulls and car-eating robots. At some events, only one truck is on the course at a time, while most feature two drivers racing each other on symmetrical tracks, with the losing driver eliminated in singleelimination tournament fashion. Swanson, who managed a printed circuit board shop owned by his father at the time he was building the truck, took a job working for a trucking company to make money for the rest of the parts for the truck. As the plans for the vehicle came together, he knew he needed to come up with a name for the truck so he asked his wife, Jill what she thought a good name would be. She said, “Why don’t you call it Obsession, since you’re obsessed with trucks.” Rick and Jill have been successfully running the monster truck business since 1994. The first year they did about 10 events, and now with a bigger family and more sponsors, they are up to 35 weekends per year. SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

Obsessed does tricks for the crowd.

“In August 2009 we completed our second truck, Obsessed, which was built for our son Eric, who was born in 1995,” said Rick. When Eric was 11 he got to experience what it was like to drive his dad’s monster truck. He even got to drive over cars, making him the youngest monster truck driver to ever compete. Fans were very impressed that an 11-year-old could maneuver such a big machine skillfully. The family of course made sure all safety precautions were in place, and for his 12th birthday, they gave him a trophy kart. “We had it painted and wrapped to match Obsession,” says Jill. “He did numerous events in it for all different promoters, and they even had him freestyle at monster truck events and he was the only trophy truck to have cleared three cars.” The family is currently building a brand-new Obsessed monster truck for Eric, which he will debut this year. “My father started building his monster truck before I was born,” says Eric. “I was basically born into the business as monster trucks have always been second nature to me. My parents said I had the throttle rhythm down at age two when I played with my monster trucks, and I knew all of the truck names and drivers before my ABCs. “The furthest we have traveled is Jacksonville, Florida,” continued Eric. My father drives our semi to the show that hauls both of our race trucks. When we are not on the road or at a show I survey the damage caused from a show, fix what needs repaired, which is welding, fabricating, rebuilding parts and replacing them. Once the damage is repaired we prepare for the next event which consists of a three page checklist that I have to inspect all moving parts on the vehicle. “In the monster truck industry image is a very important part of the job. I take pride in the appearance of our trucks and to maintain that I pressure wash, polish and paint the trucks to have them looking their best. I have done television shows, displays and photo shoots for advertising, and this plays a big part on having your truck look its best. More than likely if you see an advertisement for a show it is probably an Obsession Racing truck as we are members of the Screen Actors Guild.” The events they participate in have a couple different styles of racing. It is always in pairs and the winner advances while the loser is out, which is called heads up racing. The race track can vary from straight line racing, J-hook, Chicago style and obstacle. All of the events end with each truck doing a freestyle run. Freestyle is where the driver in his monster truck has two minutes to perform SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

and can design their own run. “I have always loved racing as I raced my Honda 50 at age five at the motocross track and continue with it as of now,” says Eric. “I still enjoy racing my dirt bike – I moved up to a 250 – but with my work schedule with the monster trucks it is hard to do a series so I just free ride whenever possible. Even though I get some high jumps in the monster truck, my parents prefer that than the dirt bike.” The newest adventure is a T-shirt company that they are starting this year, which will also showcase custom clothing in addition to their Obsession Racing shirts and shirts for many other companies. More info about the family that obsesses over racing can be found at www.obsessionracing.com.

Menifee remains one of California’s fastest growing cities, with an energetic population that has its eye on the future. Nearly 85,000 residents are awaiting the completion of 110 commercial/residential and capital improvement projects in various stages of planning and development that promise to even greater enhance the quality of living with more jobs, more services and traffic solutions for residents and businesses alike. Menifee Interim Development Director Jeff Wyman and his management team have been able to assist in streamlining the process for commercial developers through the city’s ombudsman program. The city has made good with their commitment to assist commercial developers through the departments of Economic Development, Planning, Engineering and Building and Safety to push the development process along. This has caught the eyes of commercial developers who find the additional rooftops and demographic shift in the city very attractive for commercial development, and with the Economic Development teams assistance, it’s a win, win, win situation. The city, is seeing beginning construction on its first business/light industrial center, Commerce Pointe Menifee. The 51-acre, 830,000-square-foot project will serve as a regional business center. The city is also addressing one of the biggest desires of this family-oriented town by awaiting the construction of a new Krikorian Premiere Theater. Replete with a bowling alley, sports bar and 100 foot movie screen that is the largest in Southern California, the Regent Properties Menifee Towne Center development will be located on Newport Road and

Town Center Drive. Adding to the theater complexes attraction is the Town Center Marketplace, a Rich Development project, which will include a 100,000-square-foot of retail tenants such as Active Ride Shop, PetSmart, Party City, Sonic, Crème de la Crème Bakery, Buffalo Wild Wings and many other shops and restaurant choices. Other projects in various stages and preconstruction approval processes in this young city include the following: The Menifee Crossroads at Scott and Haun Roads will be anchored by a large Walmart Supercenter and have additional retail shop space and pads. The Countryside Marketplace at Newport and Haun Roads will feature some new additions as well, such as HomeGoods, Forever 21, the Dog Haus Restaurant and Luxottica expected to be completed by summer 2016. The large superstore group is also looking at a second Walmart neighborhood store at McCall and Encanto Roads, according to planners. The Shoppes at the Lakes at Newport and Menifee Roads will feature a Blue Ribbon Stater Bros. Market as its anchor store. It will include a pharmacy and other retail shops. Menifee Lakes Plaza at Newport and Antelope Roads on a 16-acre site will include an LA Fitness center, retail shops, a hotel pad and restaurants. The Junction located at Scott and Haun Roads will include 528,000 square feet in retail anchors, shops and pad spaces. Recently completed projects in the city include Ulta Beauty, Justice, Applebees, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Jersey Mike’s SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

Moving! and The Flame Broiler. Another major factor in Menifee’s predicted expansion is the future population growth expected by 2016. A 2014 demographic study made by Derrigo Demographic Studies showed the city’s population in May 2015 was at 85,385 and by May of this year it is expected to reach 89,230. The city’s final buildout is estimated at 165,000. All indicators suggest that Menifee will continue its rapid and well-planned growth spurt far into the next decade. Meet Your Community Leaders by Kim Harris & Tony Ault It takes a lot of work and effort to keep a city moving forward. From the state levels, all the way down to each city, community leaders have become the backbone of every city in the United States, and Menifee is no different. From laws designed to keep residents safe to planning growth and enticing new business, the following community leaders work tirelessly to “Keep Menifee Moving.” Senator Mike Morrell 23rd District As a small-business owner for over 25 years, Senator Mike Morrell understands the issues faced by residents and businesses in the Inland Empire. His view of government is simple – government exists to serve the public – not to be served by it. The right to private property, the gift of free enterprise, and government by consent are central tenets to our nation and its continued prosperity. Morrell, who boasts an impressive community service resume, is committed to restoring fiscal responsibility and common sense approaches to government. According to his online biography, Morrell served as vice chair on the Labor and Employment committee, as well as served on Banking and Finance; Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials; and Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy committees. He currently serves as vice chair on Public Employment and Retirement, Energy, Utilities and Communications, and Banking and Financial Institutions committees. Before his time in public office, Morell was an active member of the California Republican Assembly. He served on the Business Advisory Boards of former State Senator Bill Leonard and former Assemblyman Fred Aguiar, in addition to the Small Business Council of former Assemblyman Bill Emmerson. He is a graduate of Damien High School in La Verne and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business at the University

They place a high priority on ensuring public awareness and understanding of the principles of limited, constitutional government, according to his website. Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez 67th Assembly District First elected to the Assembly in 2012, Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez knows what it takes to get things done for her community. The second term assemblywoman and former Navy intelligence officer is known for being a tireless advocate for veterans and military families. While in the Navy, Melendez attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where she became fluent in Russian. She went on to be approved to fly aboard the EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft overseas. She was rewarded numerous times for her service which included serving as a Russian translator for 10 years during the height of the Cold War, and flying covert missions during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Melendez was elected to Lake Elsinore City Council in 2008 and served four years before becoming elected to the assembly.

During her time on council, the married mother of five held positions as Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor. All, she said, are experiences that have helped shape the way she works for the residents of Menifee and surrounding communities. Melendez has distinguished herself throughout the district by tackling some of the most important issues of the day, like fighting for increased government transparency, reducing taxes, and easing the burden on the business community. Melendez has five children with her husband of 18 years, Nico Melendez, who works for the Department of Homeland Security. Nico is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served 10 years on active duty around the world as a journalist and public affairs officer. He proudly continues to serve in an active naval reserve unit.

Scott Mann Mayor Menifee Mayor Scott Mann has 33 years of leadership and management experience in the public and private sectors, devoting much of his adult life to business and serving the public, all of which make him an ideal choice to serve as mayor in this rapidly-growing city. Mann, who was first elected as Mayor in 2102, said that serving the public gives him the opportunity to bring the “full scope” of his professional experience and education to the city. “I like working through issues with my colleagues and effecting good public policy for the benefit of all residents,” he said. “Our council works well together and with the senior management team at city hall. As part of his job as Mayor, Mann works with the city manager and city clerk to set the council agenda with “substantial input” from other elected council members, but his service to the community doesn’t stop there. “I represent the city on regional and state boards, commissions and committees making sure that Menifee’s voice is heard on key policy initiatives,” said Mann, who retired as a Lt. Cmdr. in the U.S Navy. “I like to call myself the ‘chief cheerleader’ for our city when I’m working with stakeholders to bring about economic development to our area.” Mann, who also has 10 years of corporate and public agency experience – including running his own consulting firm – said that he loves living in Menifee for a variety of reasons “Our location is ideally situated in Southwestern California... just a short hour’s drive from San Diego, Los Angeles, the desert areas and the mountains makes Menifee a great place to live, work and raise a family,” he said. Mann works as the Director of Risk Management for the Moreno Valley Unified School District. He has been married for 32 years to his wife Debra and has three adult children. SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

Mayor Pro Tem Greg August First term Councilman and retired military man Greg August said he ran for office to give citizens a voice. “I ran for the position of councilman more or less out of frustration and opposition with some decisions by the original city council at incorporation,” he said, adding he attended most city council meetings since incorporation in 2008, often speaking during the public comments portion of those meetings. Since his election to council representing District 1, August, who has three grown children, discovered that what he likes best about his position is working with the city staff to ensure that concerns from the public are heard, given time and followed up with an answer. “I see myself as an intermediary between the public and the city, knowing that it is the staff that gets the daily work done,” he said. August said he likes that people are not always in agreement with one another and that he understands every interest cannot be satisfied. “Most people understand that, although are not always happy

A Note from Menifee’s Economic Development Department The Economic Development Team for the City of Menifee is diligently working to bring the amenities that residents want and need. Led by Interim Development Director Jeff Wyman, with team members Economic Development Manager Gina Gonzalez and Management Analyst Brian Oulman, the team is responsible for all aspects of the city’s economic development platform and outreach. Focusing on business attraction, retention, job development and marketing for the City of Menifee, the team has managed multiple significant projects and programs. These include the creation of a business improvement program, an ombudsman assistance program, the city’s first professional marketing materials, the city’s comprehensive Business Incentive Program, and the promotion of the Economic Development Corridor to create economic opportunities and attract businesses into the city. From the team’s marketing and business attraction efforts, there is now over one million square feet of commercial, retail, entertainment, and restaurant space moving forward in the city, and the team is excited about all the new amenities opening soon. The overarching goal of the Economic Development Team is to attract quality improvements and amenities to the city as quickly as possible, which will in turn provide additional revenue streams to help the city pay for public safety, road improvements, and expanded services within the community. At your service, Jeff Wyman Interim Development Director 10

about it,” he said. “If Menifee residents get true and accurate information as to why some decisions are made as opposed to others, they may not like it, but generally, do accept it. That is a positive quality of the Menifee resident.” August believes that the district form of government that was the subject of much controversy in years past is the best path for the city, and said the city continues to change and grow at a rapid pace. “It would be nice if change was always the result of having the luxury in latitude to choose a direction, rather than being forced to,” he said. “The reality of cities today too often is the latter. Aside from politics, it’s really the financial health of the city where decisions and choices are made. The hardest aspect of my job is to make everyone happy and satisfied, knowing it can truly never be done. The challenge is to get as close to it as possible. In my opinion, that means taking the time to meet and talk with as many people, and interests as I can. As difficult as it may be to find common ground, it is the only place it can be found. In most cases, listening is the best friend of any decision, contrary or otherwise.”

Councilman John Denver Councilman John Denver is a longtime resident of the Menifee and Perris Valley area. Seeing the area’s growth potential in the early 1980s, John left a teaching position at Perris Valley Junior High School and went into the real estate business. He began a political career by running for a trustee position on the Perris Union High School District Board where he maintained his seat for 17 years. In 2008, John joined the Menifee Valley Incorporation Committee and worked to reach a goal of making Menifee a unified city. The committee’s efforts paid off and John won a seat on the first Menifee City Council and soon became mayor in a line of council succession. John, who is in his final term in office, said this about the City of Menifee: “Menifee’s history goes back 20 or more years. Before cityhood, there were several communities that were created so that “Sun City” could become a city. Many citizens were on those committees (Menifee Valley Incorporation Committee being one of them)

but each failed to get the Riverside County organization called LAFCO to approve the new “Sun City” then called Menifee Valley. The reasons were varied, but most often the area did not have enough people to pay for a city. “Finally, the area was big enough, because Romoland and Quail Valley were added. The last committee was chaired by Joe Dougherty and Darcy Kuenzi who were the real brains behind the effort. The name voted on for the new city was Menifee, rather than Menifee Valley. The city was voted on and approved. Twenty-five people ran for office and five won. “The new city grew and grew. There were problems over the years, but tax money increased, often at 10 percent a year. The city became one in its own right and I’m proud to have been part of the history,” Denver said. John and his wife Linda have one son and two grandsons.

Councilman Matthew Liesemeyer Matthew Liesemeyer has been a resident of Menifee for 13 years, moving his family here to take advantage of everything the community

has to offer. “As a small Menifee business owner with a background in engineering and surveying, I was appointed to the Menifee Planning Commission in 2009, serving as chairman three times. In this leadership position, I led the commission in the completion of our first ever General Plan, which guides city development into the future.” Liesemeyer said that being able to bring his “new, fresh ideas” to council and specifically his thoughts on the Scott Road interchange project is the accomplishment he is proudest of since being elected to represent his district in 2012. “I brought staff different outlooks and introduced some ways to shave costs on the Scott Road overpass,” he said, adding that the success of the project has been a group effort. “The mayor brought in some financial ideas and through collaboration they’re working on something new and fresh that will bring the Scott Road interchange to fruition sooner than would have been previously allowed.” Liesemeyer said that he believes: implementing quality commercial and residential developments will increase the city’s tax base. local government, building infrastructure will improve traffic circulation, increasing the level of public safety will reduce crime and that adding spacious parks will improve quality of life throughout the community. Public safety is on top of Liesemeyer’s to-do list for the upcoming year. “I started down the path with our city manager to find a resolution on our public safety needs,” he said. “I hope that this time next year we will have a goal within reach and will be able to get more officers on the ground. “I pledged to work tirelessly for you to make Menifee the best city to live in and that is still my commitment to you,” he said.

Councilwoman Lesa Sobek Lesa Sobek might be new on city council, but her ties to Menifee run deep. Having lived in the city for 26 years with her husband of nearly four decades, Jim Sobek, she has served the city in a wide variety of roles. “Our family moved to Menifee from Riverside in 1989, when the area was just beginning to bloom. With all three young children in school, I was available to become a PTA volunteer,” she said. “I was involved in Cub Scouts as a den leader, served in elementary and middle school PTAs and high school booster clubs, all the while being a devoted caregiver to my aging mother-in-law, who lived with us.” She has also served as a leader within her church in various capacities, with children, youth, and its women’s service organization of over 200 women. As the years went by and her children grew older, she was employed by the Menifee Union School District in the capacities of health technician, campus supervisor, office clerk and library technician. In August 1997, she was hired by MUSD to research and develop a program known as “G.R.E.A.T.” (Grandparents; Reading, Enriching and Tutoring), an intergenerational literacy program at Callie Kirkpatrick Elementary School utilizing senior citizens and other volunteers from the community to tutor students who were challenged in attaining to the California Standards for Language Arts. Once her oldest son joined the Army in 2005, Sobek became an advocate for those who serve. She was instrumental in bringing the Military Banner Program to the city and helped to form the popular citywide program Menifee Better Together. Sobek’s two sons and one daughter are now all married with children of their own. In 2013, Sobek was appointed to the City Planning Commission by Mayor Scott Mann and said that she has enjoyed learning about city planning and helping to make decisions that enhance Menifee by bringing quality development and by helping make the city a safe and enjoyable place for people to live, work and play. “My experiences in leadership have taught me that a good leader must be honest, have the ability to delegate, have confidence, commitment, a positive attitude, be creative, communicate well, and have a sense of humor,” she said. “I believe a leader should inspire others and lead by example. True leadership is service to others and not service to self.” SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

Rob Johnson City Manager Menifee City Manager Rob Johnson has a long history serving residents of the local community. He began with Menifee in September 2009 and has worked in a variety of roles before finally being named city manager in November 2012. Johnson, who has been working in municipal government for 16 years, said that he decided to serve Menifee and its residents due to the opportunities offered by a newly incorporated city and his desire to assist in creating a community. “The best thing I like about the City of Menifee is the endless possibilities that we have to create a better community and working with residents and business leaders every day on major projects that benefit us and the surrounding region,” Johnson said. On any given day, the married father of two can be found managing the day to day operations of the city of Menifee. His job entails such tasks as developing capital improvement programs (build infrastructure), bringing new business to the city and assisting with new development opportunities and amenities for residents while assisting the City Council with establishing and creating policies and the municipal code.

Sarah Manwaring City Clerk Menifee’s new City Clerk Sarah Manwaring is no stranger to city government experience. Manwaring, who is from Murrieta, brought 13 years of experience with her when she replaced Kathy Bennett who retired after serving in the public sector for 25 years, eight of which were spent in Menifee. “We welcome Sarah to Menifee’s management team,” said City Manager Rob Johnson during a city council meeting where Manwaring was introduced to the public. “She brings more than 13 years of city government experience in this region, including seven years in the city clerk’s office. Her training in computerbased agenda management and record storage, along with her enthusiasm and attention to detail will ensure a smooth transition in her new role.” Manwaring is very familiar with city government in the area. She served as assistant city clerk in Canyon Lake, and was most recently the city clerk in Murrieta. She led a team of five to ensure Murrieta complied with federal, state and local laws. She also served as the city’s election official and prepared city council packets and meeting agendas. Currently, Manwaring is Program Chair of the Southern California City Clerks Association and is well connected and respected

throughout the Riverside County region. “I am thrilled to begin working with the city of Menifee team,” said Manwaring. “With Menifee being a relatively new city, I see great opportunities to make an impact in the organization and within the community as the city continues to grow and mature.” In her spare time Manwaring enjoys spending time with her husband Robert and daughters Allyson and Emily.

Robert Lennox Community Services Director Robert Lennox said he was “enticed by the immense opportunity” to build something from the ground up when he decided to take the job as Menifee’s Community Services Director. “The best thing about the position is the opportunity to serve and interact with residents,” he said, adding that, it is satisfying to see youth, adults and seniors “enjoying the city in which they live and being able to improve their quality of life thanks to the department’s programs and activities.” Lennox creates and delivers the city’s recreation programs and services, including afterschool programs, classes, senior service and citywide special events. The department also manages over 3.5 million square feet of landscaped parks and street parkways/ medians. “From playgrounds to trails, we are tasked with keeping public open space in the city presentable and accessible to residents,” said the Riverside native and married father of two. His department is also responsible for the conditioning and review of new parks and parkways built by developers and dedicated to the city once completed.” To-date, the city has more than 30 planned park projects at different stages of development and continues to improve existing parks through the city’s five-year Capital Improvement Program. “It is incredibly fulfilling to experience the smiles and laughter that residents elicit when participating in our programs,” said Lennox, who plays and coaches soccer in his free time. “We aim to celebrate Menifee’s diversity through the large festivals and events we facilitate each year. These activities create community and provide a sense of identity and place for residents.”

hat do you get when you cross 50 pounds of baking soda, more than 40 years of marriage and an enormous holiday spirit? If you are Chris and Mary Carnes, the answer to that question is a season of joy, sharing and caring in the form of their ever-popular Menifee Christmas House. Every year since 1994, the couple have opened their home to residents as a way to celebrate the holidays, a tradition that has evolved into a way to support the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, where they both volunteer, and help with food donations, according to Mary. “For many years, people who came to the house would ask what they could do for us for the food, drink and Christmas spirit we gave them,” she said. “About seven years ago we decided to accept donations for our local Menifee Valley Community Cupboard. That first year we collected about 50 pounds of food. Last year we collected just under 5,000 pounds.” Sharing the Christmas spirit by opening their home to the public goes back to 1991 for the couple who entered a nationwide decorating contest while living in Eagle Rock. They won the grand prize in that contest, Mary said, solidifying their passion for sharing their holiday

spirit with their community. “The Los Angeles Times published a story about us on Christmas Eve,” Mary said. “The Saturday after Christmas, during a party we were having for family and friends, we ended up with a house full of strangers who just dropped by to see our decorations. We met many new friends and thought it was pretty cool that so many people enjoyed what we did.” Mary, who retired from the American Forces Radio and Television Service, said that she and Chris, who teaches eighth grade math and algebra in Hemet at Rancho Viejo Middle School, had no idea that the initial Christmas House in Eagle Rock would evolve into what it has become. More than 15,000 visitors come to their home each year to revel in the holiday décor. “We had no idea it would turn into this but we are thrilled it has,” she said. “We now realize that people from all over the country also enjoy our decorations.” Each year the couple makes snow with 50 pounds of baking soda and sees their electric bill increase by about $500, even though 90 percent of their decorations are outfitted with LED lights, Mary said. has become a tradition in this small city, the holiday decorations aren’t the only thing that people come out for. Many nights there is entertainment provided by talented volunteers, and Santa usually comes for a visit, providing guests a night of good, clean family fun. “All of our entertainers are from the Menifee community and talented family and friends,” Mary said. “In past years we’ve had singers, jugglers, magicians, musicians and more. We never know when someone will show up and want to entertain our guests either inside the house or on the front lawn.” Mary says that sharing her home, food and drink with everyone who shows up for what she called their “gift” to the community is rewarding for both her and her husband.

“The gratitude and love that we receive back from our guests fuels our enthusiasm to continue to do this year after year,” she said. Enthusiasm is a necessity for the couple who spends three months before the holiday decorating their home and another three months after to take it all down and put it away in their garage, attic and backyard shed. “We have been married and collecting for over 40 years,” Mary said, adding that experience has changed their lives by opening doors and allowing them to become more active in the Menifee community. In addition to sitting on the board for Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, the two also recently joined the Menifee Arts Council. “You need to realize there are more good people out there than bad,” Mary said. “The

news seems to focus on the bad more than the good. We tend to focus on the good all around us.” Mary says the couple’s goal is to spread what they believe is the spirit of the holidays to as many people as possible, no matter their religion. “Everyone walking through our door is a VIP and we treat them as such,” she said. “We also want to collect as many nonperishable items for the MVCC for distribution to the many needy families in the Menifee Valley. The Menifee Christmas House is open each year beginning the first Saturday in December and remains open every evening from 6 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31. “Sometimes we open earlier and we stay open later as long as people keep coming,” Mary said.

Serving Those Who Serve Us by Robin Montgomery Every day across the United States, military personnel are deployed or reassigned to other military bases around the world. In many of those cases, service members cannot take their beloved pets with them, nor can they find anyone to care for their pets until they return home months later. All too often, these service members have no other option than to turn their pets in to animal shelters, leaving their pets’ fate unknown. An Idea is Born In 2011, husband and wife, Shawn and Alisa Johnson, were both serving in the military and experienced this very

problem when they were both unexpectedly reassigned to different military bases. While trying to find a temporary home for their dog, JD, the couple was nearly forced to give away their family pet, due to a lack of available resources. At the time, Shawn was serving in the U.S. Navy and was facing overseas deployment. At the same time, Alisa was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps when she was reassigned to Quantico, Virginia. Fortunately for Shawn and Alisa, they had family they were able to rely on. However, they immediately recognized there was a potential need for other military members who found themselves in similar situations.

Thus, they created Dogs on Deployment. Dogs on Deployment’s Mission The mission of Dogs on Deployment (DoD) is, “To give military members peace of mind concerning their pets during their service commitments by providing them with the ability to find people and resources able to help them.” New Concept Breeds New Volunteer Possibilities Anita Montijo, a resident of New Mexico who works with DoD as a boarder/foster parent for these animals, recently wrote about DoD saying, “If any of you reading

to my deployment,” explained Collier. “I was even fortunate enough to have my dogs featured on Facebook at one point,” said Collier. Many wonderful and kind people responded, offering to open up their homes to both of my dogs. I eventually was able to meet with some of the people who offered (their assistance) and I’m so pleased to say that the family who took my dogs in couldn’t (have been) more wonderful!” Collier was happy to share that while she was deployed, she even received photos and emails about how her dogs were doing in her absence. She felt more confident about her deployment without having to worry or be concerned about her beloved animals. When asked about her experience with DoD, Collier simply said, “Thank you so much, Dogs on Deployment!” Shawn and Alyssa Johnson, founders of Dogs on Deployment. this are hesitant about being a boarder, my recommendation is to just jump in. “We have only had our new boarders, Luna and Achilles, for one day and we are already seeing the joy and excitement of helping… you’ll love the experience,” said Montijo. Dogs on Deployment Named Foster Organization of the Year Recognizing DoD’s efforts, the All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration recently named DoD as their Foster Organization of the Year at their second annual All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration on Thanksgiving Day. DoD was nominated for the honor because it is the nation’s largest foster network provider, serving the country’s military personnel. Since the group’s inception, they have helped over 800 military pets find temporary homes during their owner’s military service obligations. The award was presented by popular country band, Florida Georgia Line. Alisa and Shawn Johnson, along with DoD’s National Public Relations Director, Corynn Myers, accepted the award on behalf of the Dogs on Deployment organization and all the faithful volunteers around the country who donate their time, money and effort. Kaley Cuoco, star of Big Bang Theory, hosted the show. The red carpet was star studded, with animal-loving supporters like Betty White, Cesar Millan, Paula Abdul, Emmy Rossum and many more in attendance. Military Personnel Grateful for Service Provided by Dogs on Deployment Kelly Collier, a U.S. military service member currently stationed in North Carolina, recently said about DoD, “I cannot express how grateful I am that this organization exists. “Worrying about who’d watch my pets was my number one stress point prior

How to Help With so many military personnel living in Southern California communities, such as Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms, Miramar, Coronado Island, San Diego Naval Base and many others, there is a constant need for the type of assistance offered by DoD. For those interested, there are several ways to help DoD. You can be a foster home for pets, sponsor pets, shop at their online store, or simply donate to the organization. Dogs on Deployment can be reached at www.dogsondeployment.org, on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/DogsonDeployment, or at their Southern California Chapter phone number (619) 800-3631.

Committee meetings from 12 to 2 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. Earlier this year, the Arts Council Menifee sponsored the 5th annual Arts Showcase at the Countryside Marketplace. Artists of all ages and spectators, both local and from surrounding areas, assembled together. A gathering filled with music and good fun, participants shared in each other’s craftsmanship and entertainment. Some put on performances for dance and singing, others laid out their crafts and canvased artworks, while many came to share in the accomplishments of the artists. The Arts Showcase is a great way to promote your own art work, show support to others’ originality and an excellent place for a good natured family outing. Linda Morrison, co-chair and trustee for the Visual Arts Division, truly believes in the Arts Council’s motto: “Bringing the arts to Menifee and local artists to the public.” Linda says, “We believe the arts are essential to the life of the community. It is the mission of the Arts Council of Menifee to support and expand the opportunities for diverse artistic expression. We are providing quality programs and events in all facets of the arts.” Linda feels that all of the divisions are vital to the cohesion of the Arts but states, “My primary involvement is with the Visual Arts Division. After leaving my corporate position in 2008, I resumed my passion for painting and began painting in oils. Presently I enjoy all mediums. I have a very diverse style. I paint whatever moves me from landscapes to portraits.” Linda expresses that, “The Arts Council of Menifee provides leadership, community involvement and it broadens public awareness and opportunities in artistic and cultural activities.” For those with artistic abilities who would like the chance to teach their technique and share their field of expertise in the vast world of creativity with members eager to learn in the community, the Arts Council welcomes volunteers. You can support your local art organization as well by donation – a great way to show your support and help continue to enrich the lives of both children and adults alike. Find all the ways that art forms benefit the mind and body and help us all to achieve a self-awareness and satisfaction while having fun and reducing stress. Lots to Enjoy Now and in the Future at

Menifee Parks

by Trevor Montgomery

Each year residents and visitors to the city of Menifee enjoy the various facilities, recreation opportunities, special events and programs offered by the City of Menifee’s Community Services Department, which was formed in 2013. One of the departments that falls under the Community Services Department is the Menifee Parks. Menifee Parks proudly offers a wide variety of parks and open spaces that feature trails, classes and regularly planned activities as well as special events. The city of Menifee has stated a strong desire for its citizens to get out and enjoy all the amenities their beautiful city has to offer. The city has also stressed that beautiful parks offer a better quality of life for its citizens. “The economic benefits to the city of Menifee having a multitude of recreational opportunities and different options, open spaces and trails is great because it encourages families and businesses to not only want to come here, but to stay here,” said Robert Lennox, community services director for Menifee Parks. In all, the city of Menifee offers a total of 29 parks within the city limits, howevPhoto above from E.L. Peterson Park in Menifee.

er, not all parks within the city limits are owned and maintained by the city of Menifee. Menifee parks are comprised of nine city-owned parks covering just under 50 total acres and 20 parks owned by ValleyWide Recreation and Park District, offering more than 103 acres for the citizens of Menifee to enjoy. The city’s parks feature miles of maintained trails perfect for hiking, bird watching, bike riding and other activities, as well as many other amenities intended to cover a wide range of activities, from playgrounds, exercise and sports areas. Lennox explained there is always confusion regarding the difference between the nine parks owned and maintained by the city of Menifee and the 20 parks within the city limits that are owned and maintained by Valley-Wide. “Many citizens of Menifee don’t understand the difference between the two entities and that they are completely separate, with separate goals,” Lennox explained. “Maintaining that balance between the needs of the citizens and which parks are city parks versus Valley-Wide parks is always a challenge.”

Since the creation of the Community Services Department by the Menifee City Council in 2013, Parks staff has been assessing and evaluating the condition of city owned park facilities. Many of the facilities were inherited by the City from the County of Riverside when the City first incorporated. These parks were formally part of unincorporated Community Service Areas managed by the County Economic Development Agency. In an effort to improve parks, Menifee recently created the Parks, Trails, Open Space, and Recreation Master Plan. The City of Menifee’s Park’s Master Plan has a clear set of objectives to provide direction for development, re-development, expansion and enhancement of the city’s park system, open spaces, trails and recreation facilities program. The Park’s Master Plan has addressed issues, goals and services and has created short-term, mid-term and long-term plans that cover the next 15-20 years, according to Lennox. Lennox stated since the formation of the Park’s Master Plan earlier this year, evaluations by parks staff have revealed a myrShane Gibson photos

iad of conditions at many facilities that they believed to be below standard. The Community Services Department has stated some of the problem issues were related to deferred maintenance, while others are related to outdated and non-functional designs. “The plan, which has sought community input, has helped serve as a guide that prioritizes goals and projects for the community’s outdoor amenities,” Lennox explained. “We have been seeking as much input from our citizens as possible at our city council meetings, meetings with the Park’s Master Plan, through online surveys and more.” During the 2014/15 fiscal year, City Council adopted new Park and Landscape Design Standards to guide new open space development and set minimum standards for ongoing maintenance and construction of public facilities. Since its inception just nine

months ago, parks staff has referred to these guidelines in their assessment of existing parks and the specific needs of those current parks as well as compiled a list of improvement needs for the upcoming years. Collectively, each of these projects is referred to as the Parks Capital Improvement Program. Given the depth and scope of the project list, staff is proposing a minimum five-year plan to address many of the most needed improvements as well as other, lower priority additions and improvements to the parks system. A major upcoming parks project that has been garnering much excitement and anticipation is the planned opening of Menifee’s Central Park. Central Park is planned to be built as part of the Menifee Town Center, next to the location designated for the future city hall.

According to Lennox, Menifee’s Central Park is planned to be a destination park and will feature such amenities as a splash pad and water spray features for the children, an outdoor amphitheater for performing arts and concerts, an arts plaza and much more. “Because this park will be next to the future city hall and its central location within the city, Central Park will be a true ‘events park’ for our citizens to enjoy. “With beautiful parks and open spaces, there are more opportunities for the city to connect with its citizens,” Lennox continued. “The bottom line is people want their parks nearby; they want to live where they have opportunities to recreate instead of having to travel. Having better quality parks gives our residents more incentive to live here. Better parks mean a better quality of life for our citizens and are therefore a high priority for our city.”

Sports on the Rise in Menifee,

Popularity Increasing at All Ages Obesity is a growing problem in the United States and comes with more than just excessive weight. Increased likelihood of health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes are just a few of the problems that those attempting to lose those extra pounds might struggle with. Over the past 15 years, the nation’s obesity rate rose by 24 percent among adults. The adult obesity rate in 20132014 was the highest ever for the nation, and equates to more than 78 million people. Children don’t fare much better, doubling the obesity rate over the past 25 years with one-third of all children affected by third grade. Sports and physical activity play an important part in helping children maintain a healthy weight. Although statistics indicate that adolescence is a time when physical activity and team sport participation decline, studies show that children who play sports at an early age are more likely to keep active as teens and adults. Bottom line, getting your kids off the couch at an early age and adding sports participation will strengthen the heart, muscles and bones, and lessen stress. Active members from many different recreation programs

SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

by JP Raineri throughout the City of Menifee couldn’t agree more and pulled together to make great strides in their mission to show the positive aspects of sports in the community as well as deliver services at an affordable rate. “Love where you play,” says Dean Wetter, general manager at ValleyWide Recreation and Park’s Menifee chapter, “is a mantra we have come to really put in place with our staff and of course the community.” Kids who play sports typically have higher grades in school and complete more years of education since playing sports also has a positive effect on emotional, social and psychological development. Children who play sports tend to show improved academic achievement, have higher self-esteem, fewer behavioral problems, and healthier psychological adjustment. The reason is that physical movement affects the brain’s physiology. In other words, playing sports is good for the body and the brain. “Sports can teach young athletes to control emotions and show initiative, two traits which transfer to other areas of life – school, family and eventually a job, which is why we focus on delivering programs for all ages,” said Wetter. “As a general overview of the sports programs here in Menifee, it is refreshing to know that they have been so strong with the growth, affordability, and all are designed to encourage communication. We stay in constant contact with the community by info sharing with schools and hand delivering flyers. Plus, we partner with HOAs, the community colleges, the city,

Gustavo Bermeo photos

and the water district, etc. The fact that we stay creative with new special events, countered with a great board of directors who are always coming up with new ideas, keeps things fresh from within. The senior softball program is the strongest it has ever been and the annual Soap Box Derby brings families out from all over the city.” The benefits of playing sports in a positive, growing environment are huge even if your child never gets a full-ride scholarship or plays in college. Organized or haphazard, competitive or recreational – get your kids up and moving. It will shape their lives for the good, and Menifee Community Services Department has a wide variety of options to do just that. Research shows that nearly 80 percent of all children who play adult-organized youth sports drop out by the time they’re 13. The reason most often cited is that it’s no longer fun. The primary reason it’s no longer fun? Overzealous adults, in the form of parents and/or coaches. Youth sports parents and coaches need to focus less on winning (and sometimes making money when it comes to youth 27

sports entrepreneurs) and more on sports as a vehicle to build teamwork and leadership abilities, improve sports skills, enhance fitness, promote healthy lifestyles, gain experiences that teach lifetime lessons and shape values, develop friendships – some for a lifetime – and have fun. “In many ways, there’s no more important issue than changing the youth sports culture,” says Wetter. “Transforming youth sports can positively impact our country in many ways. How youth sports are conducted infiltrates our collective mindset. We all need to start with some basic principles when it comes to sports participation and our youth.” Menifee Pony Baseball/Softball President Mike Adams has lived in Menifee since 2004.

“When my family, including a young daughter and son, moved here youth sports options were extremely limited,” he said. “As the city incorporated and grew, the amount of sports programs for children in the community also grew.” Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District has added many great programs that are available almost any time of the year in Menifee, Adams said. “The number of participants in my own league has grown so much, almost tripling in the last three years alone, that in addition to adding girls’ softball to our league, we’ve also been able to add many new types of programs to cater to the many different needs and abilities of the children of our city,” he said. According to Adams, his elementary school-aged son brings home fliers from

school every week for new programs offered in town, from Jazzercise to track and field to the many different after school sports offered by Menifee Valley Boys and Girls Club. “My own involvement with youth baseball and football in the area over the last decade has given me a great perspective to see the huge improvement in youth baseball All-Star teams and high school football teams that I think is a direct result of the direction our city has taken with youth sports from the youngest levels,” said Adams. “I’m very pleased with and proud of how far we’ve come.” More exciting things are on their way from Valley-Wide Recreation including a new baseball ballpark near Holland Road, which will also house play areas for kids of all ages.

Merna’s Café & Grill offers a variety of choices for diners by Kim Harris Nestled deep in the heart of Menifee lies one of the Valley’s hidden jewels, Merna’s Café & Grill. small wonder that when the opportunity arose she jumped right in and took over the thriving restaurant. Since taking over, Merna has completely made the restaurant her own. Everything from the name down to the newly-remodeled dining area and banquet rooms, along with the delightful menu has her unique flair for style and creative ideas stamped all over it. “Last January I took over the restaurant and began with the name change and then began to condense the menu in preparation of the remodel,” said Merna. For the remodeling project, Merna closed down one space at a time so that she could continue to serve her customers the delectable dishes that so many have come to know and love. “We never technically closed down, we just closed each section one at a time for the remodel,” she said. “It was very old fashioned. I changed everything from the seating arrangement to the colors. There was no bar in here, now there is a bar. There were no LED lights, now there are. Nothing that is here now was here before.” During the remodel, Merna turned a single banquet room into two rooms available to rent for weddings and special occasions. There is no set banquet menu as she likes to work with her clients to give them exactly what they want for their special day. “People ask do you have a banquet menu,” the generous restaurateur said. “I don’t have a banquet menu because I like to deal with the people. Some people are on a budget and I like to work with people to make sure we can meet all of their needs within their budget. Customers are not just a number to me. I want to build a relationship with them.” The menu features a plethora of selections including everything from mouthwatering omelets made to order to delectable desserts that leave restaurant goers wanting more. Merna uses fresh ingredients and a variety of spices and seasonings representative of her Egyptian culture in all her dishes, creating impressive flavor combinations that are pleasing to the palate. For breakfast, which is served all day, try the Mediterranean Chicken omelet. Packed with chicken, spinach, feta cheese, black olives, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions and mushrooms, this offering is a meal all itself for any time of the day. SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

We make everything from scratch. It’s very authentic.

“I never want to be known as a business woman,” said Merna. “That’s not what it is all about. It’s about the people. You have to have a passion. Success to me isn’t money, it’s seeing people happy.” For a fun evening, check out a variety of entertainment including the Belly-dancers once a month at Merna’s. n interest that began as a hobby for Robert Carter after being given a home brewing kit for Christmas by his wife Grace has now led him to become a co-owner of the only microbrewery in Menifee. Carter and his wife, Grace Santiago, own and work at the Mason Jar Brewing Company that boasts 15 of their original beers on tap and no third-party beers. They opened their doors to the public in March 2015. “I purchased my husband a beer kit so he could support his love of craft beer,” said Santiago. “Being the frugal REALTOR ® that I am, I decided best bet was to have him learn how to brew.” “He brewed his first batch with a Mr. Beer Kit and it was awful tasting,” Santiago continued. “Instead of him tucking his tail and never brewing again, he decided to jump in with both feet and learn how to brew from a local home brew craft shop.” Once Carter learned to brew he taught his wife. “We started making crazy flavors,” Santiago said. “I get inspired by cooking and I love food. I’m a fan of food, so anything that tastes good to me and I think would taste good in a beer, I try to make it into a beer.” The couple won gold in the 2014 National Homebrew Competition in the fruit beer division with their Raz-Ma-Taz beer, a dark chocolate raspberry coconut stout that they originally brewed at home during Christmas. To say the least, this beer is full flavored with hints of sweet berry taste. “That’s actually what pushed us into moving forward with the brewery,” said Santiago. “A lot of people brew for years and years 32

and don’t get to that level. At that point we said we’ve got to do it. We have to open a brewery. It’s not just family and friends telling us that we make good beer.” Mason Jar beers are brewed with premium German grains. Flavors are unique and true to their enticing names. “We started brewing out of the garage making small batches of our interpretations of what we liked,” said Carter. “Then we started doing competitions and now here we are at the brewery level.” For the holiday season they brewed Gingersnatch, a gingerbread brown ale, served in their traditional mason jars topped with a gingerbread cookie and rimmed with brown sugar. To keep in tune with their originality, they also celebrate nontraditional holidays such as “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” when people came decked out in pirate gear and the brewery was decorated with fish nets, buoys and treasure chests.

“They released an English brown ale with Jamaican spiced rum and people are still talking about that beer ‘til this day,” said Cindy Walsh, taproom manager. Another such holiday was “National Bacon Day” when they served a maple bacon porter with a side of real fried bacon and brown sugar and black pepper rimmed glass. “We’re not over the top serious here so they’re not afraid of throwing in extra spices or flavoring and having a little fun with it,” Walsh said. “I was a taproom manager at another bar in Temecula and once I met with Robert and Grace it was an easy transition to make. I like their vision and their passion for the craft. When you have an interview and you’re hugging the owners on the way out, you know they’re good people and I knew good times were ahead.” Their Coco Loco is a smooth coconut and limed-based beer that is light, yet flavorful for any time of the year.

“It’s full of flavor and aroma,” said Santiago. “You’ll never try a beer like this one.” Their best-seller is Raging Rooster, a basic Irish red ale. It is brewed with Irish whiskey-soaked oak chips, giving it what Santiago calls a woodsy flavor without a heavy alcohol punch. Carter and Santiago say it accounts for 56 percent of their total sales. Not only do they brew a good beer, but Carter and Santiago do their best to make visitors feel as comfortable as possible. “We want them to feel like it’s just another extension of being home,” said Santiago. “We want them to be themselves and relax.” The brewery is designed to encourage visitors to interact with one another. There is a bar complete with stools and a few wooden benches reminiscent of park benches fit for a picnic. If the bar is full, some parties will end up sharing tables with one another. “We’re so disconnected most of the time, and to connect with another human being is an amazing feeling,” said Santiago. “If you can connect over beer, why not?” There is no age limit at the Mason Jar Brewery as Carter and Santiago welcome people of all ages to come with their families. “It’s very family friendly,” said Santiago. “We have families that come and basically have a picnic at one of the tables. They bring their lunch or dinner and their kids play cards or checkers. It’s really nice to see people have a great time and just get away and unplug from their phones and iPads and everything else and just have a good time.” “It’s a family thing,” said Carter. “People are so used to having to get a babysitter and now we get to see people come in all excited with their kids. Some of the kids run around and play and get crazy. It’s a lot of fun.”

The beer taps are connected to a large red barn door designed by Carter and Santiago and framed by a friend. “Most of the decor we built, sanded and designed ourselves,” said Santiago. “There’s literally blood, sweat and tears in these taproom walls.” The wall trimming is made up of reclaimed wood pallets that have been broken down and pieced together by the couple to create a country like setting. “We wanted to blend with Menifee and not stand out like a wart or an eyesore,” Santiago said. “We were inspired by the culture of Menifee. We love that it’s suburban, but still connected to its farming roots.” The name of the brewery was also inspired by the culture of Menifee. “Everything old fashioned and delicious comes from a mason jar,” said Santiago. “It just makes you think of grandma and her delicious food and canning from fresh produce. That’s what we wanted and that’s why we have the country theme.” Walking into the brewery patrons are welcomed by a warm staff and offered a beer as if they are stopping by to visit a friend. “We have a great staff,” said Santiago. “We are really blessed to have some fantastic individuals that work with us.” Location was a crucial factor to Carter and Santiago during the planning process of opening their brewery. “Our children go to school here and we have been in the community for close to seven years,” said Santiago. “We felt it was the right move for us to support our community and stay grounded in that community.” They attribute much of their success to receiving a helping hand when then they needed it most. “The people of Menifee have been amazing, very welcoming with open arms,” Santiago said. “The city of Menifee has been hands down incredible to us. I don’t think we could have opened this brewery without them. They were willing to help as much as humanly possible to give the community what they wanted. It’s unlike any city I’ve ever encountered and it just fortified the decision of fighting so hard to be here in Menifee.” Their goal is to expand their brewing capability to a 20-barrel system and begin doing their own bottling and distributing to local BevMos, restaurants such as Provecho Grill, and other local taverns for their anniversary in March. “My 21-year-old son will be drawing the artwork for our labels,” Santiago said. “This business is definitely family run all the way. We try to make life as normal as possible and include our kids in the process.” The brewery is located at 29683 New Hub Drive in Menifee next to the U.S. Postal Service building and the Menifee Chamber of Commerce. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. Join in on the fun for Thirsty Thursdays when pints are one dollar off.

Menifee residents and visitors who want to learn about the history of the Menifee Valley and the new city can visit the Menifee Historical Museum, soon to open at a former Menifee elementary school classroom in the 26300 block of Garbani Road. When the new museum is completed, visitors will view displays that describe and depict life in the area beginning with the Native American villages, gold miners, early ranchers, one-room schoolhouses and the history of the area’s first farming families. “We plan a soft opening to the public early in 2016,” said Menifee Valley Historical

Association president Elinor Evans Martin, whose grandfather, Henry Evans, homesteaded land in Menifee in the 1800s. Evans Ranch Elementary School in Menifee is named in his honor. The nonprofit Historical Association requested permission to lease unused space at the vacant Menifee Elementary School and received full support from the Menifee Union School District Board to utilize a classroom adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club to create the museum. “Menifee may not have an old town to preserve, but our rich heritage can be enjoyed through the descriptive exhibits created from our vast collection of photographs,” Martin said. Bryce Ertell

Inspires All with His Generosity

by Trevor Montgomery For the past four years, 13-year-old Bryce Ertell, a young man with a huge heart, has been doing something almost unthinkable for someone his age – he’s been giving away all his Christmas presents to other children. For the last three years, Bryce has donated all his gifts to children at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Children at Rady are all suffering from terminal illnesses or serious medical conditions. Last year, Bryce bought or gave away nearly 40 toys. Also last year, Bryce decided to adopt a family experiencing domestic violence and abandonment, and he plans to donate all his toys to them. The family consisted of a single mom with six children.

He is so tenderhearted and kind-spirited. I am so blessed to have him as a son.” When asked what inspired him to begin his tradition, Bryce responded, “I was inspired by a little girl I saw on the Disney Channel that gave away shoes to kids in need. I knew then I wanted to do something special too.”

A Tradition Begins Spreading the Joy Bryce and Grandma Laura Bryce, who is in eighth grade and attends Ethan A. picking out Frozen gifts for girls. But there is more to this story. About her grandson and his giving spirit, Haynes recently said, “Bryce has the maturity of an adult and a heart of gold. His tender heart and giving nature are an inspiration to us all. We are so blessed to have this wonderful young man in our lives.” Bryce’s sister, Hannah Martinez, recognizes what her brother is doing is special. “Being 17, I’m supposed to be the role model for my younger brother, but in situations like these, Bryce rises to the occasion and becomes mine,” said Hannah. Asked how he felt knowing his actions have inspired others, Bryce responded, “Knowing others are joining with me restores hope in my heart.” A Story for Each and Every Toy On Dec. 8, Bryce made his annual trip to the same Target with Alana and Haynes. Like every year, Bryce took his time, thinking about each and every gift. Beaming, Alana proudly said, “Bryce makes sure to buy toys he thinks the children who receive them will most appreciate. He never rushes. He thinks about every child and what they might most like to receive. He even has a story for each and every toy and why he bought them.” This year, Bryce had the added responsibility of trying to buy toys for the specific children in the family he adopted. The six children’s ages ranged from 18 months to 18 years old. Most of the requests were what you would expect to see on a typical “Dear Santa” letter – Star Wars toys and Legos for the boys, Barbies and anything from the movie Frozen for the girls. However, a heartbreaking request came from one of the teenage daughters. Still feeling the effects of the violence she had recently endured, her Christmas list included a request for pepper spray. Because It Makes His Heart Feel Good Bryce, who hopes 2016 will be his biggest gift-giving year yet, recently said, “Knowing that what I’m doing for other kids makes them happy and makes me feel good. I bring them gifts so their parents have one less thing to worry about.” About her son’s selfless acts of kindness, Alana stated, “My son has a heart of gold. I have no idea how long he will continue doing this; that is entirely up to him. But he seems to trust in his heart that he is doing the right thing. His family and I truly could not be more proud of him. Bryce doesn’t do this for recognition. He has told me he does this every year simply because it makes his heart feel good.” SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

Menifee Valley Community Cupboard

A huge delivery arrives at MVCC from the school district.

Helping to End Hunger in Menifee Valley by Trevor Montgomery

An MVCC volunteer gathers food items for a family.

The Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, an idea that was born in 1996, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping end hunger and malnutrition for citizens in the Menifee Valley. Today the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard serves nearly 1,200 residents of Menifee, including 600 different families.

Ryan patiently waits for his mom, Chrissy, to wrap up her Christmas shopping in the annual Holiday Shop. Robin Montgomery photos

The Beginning of an Area Staple The concept for the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard (MVCC) began during a Healthier Communities Task Force community workshop hosted by Valley Health System in July of 1996. That year, a volunteer from a Menifee area school voiced her concern regarding the nutritional needs of students during the time they are not actually attending school and are “off track.” By the following year, a group comprised of civic and church volunteers had been formed and was meeting regularly to address this concern. The newly formed MVCC received approval as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in January of 1998. From their very first meeting, the group has worked towards creating what has now become the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard. When MVCC was initially forming, Central County United Way lent the organization startup money and acted as their fiduciary agent. Additionally, Supervisor Jim Venable was able to secure more than $4,000 through the counties Economic Development Agency. MVCC also received financial support from community volunteers and organizations, who gave their time, energy and effort to find a suitable location for a headquarters and do all that had to be done to begin an agency from “scratch.” Dawn Smith is currently the program director for the growing organization. She started by volunteering with MVCC and later served on the group’s Board of Directors. According to Smith, “Support and involvement from the community is vital to our continued success.” One of MVCC’s biggest regular donors is the school district. Others who provide support

and assistance to MVCC include the City of Menifee and local churches from around the community. This year alone those who help support MVCC donated around 200,000 pounds of food. From 48 applicants representing 90 people during their first month of operation in January of 1998, MVCC’s applicant list grew to 1,568, with 60,510 boxed meals being delivered that first year. By the year 2000, MVCC was providing as many as 114,640 meals to a total of 6,175 people, including nearly 450 home deliveries. Menifee Thrift Shop - A True Value Smith explained MVCC purchased the old Hospice Thrift store in Menifee in 2002. Once renovated, the location became known as the Menifee Thrift Shop. It features everything from housewares, furniture, linens, clothing, décor, and everyday items for everyone in the family. Smith explained the Menifee Thrift Shop provides all financial support for administrative costs to both the MVCC as well as the thrift shop itself through sales and donations to the community store. Because of that, 100 percent of all donations to MVCC go directly to providing food for Menifee residents who need the assistance. According to volunteer Sheryl Hussey, “Everybody feels good about spending their money here because it’s going for a good cause, versus big corporations.” Most of the money generated from the thrift shop goes directly towards purchasing much-needed essentials such as milk, chicken, turkey and fresh produce, as well as staples such as rice, beans and soups. SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

The busiest time of year for the Menifee Thrift Shop is when the thrift store operates its annual Christmas Shop. Beginning just before Halloween and continuing through Christmas, the Christmas Shop always draws in large crowds of shoppers hunting down holiday bargains. Gesturing towards the throngs of shoppers around her, PratherSmith said, “During the holidays our shop is packed with people all day long.” Among the many other services MVCC provides, the group also offers home delivery services for the elderly and for those who are disabled and have no means of coming to the MVCC to receive food. According to Smith, the people who are most in need in the area are seniors and, in particular, widowed seniors. MVCC is also the local distribution point for U.S. Department of Agriculture Commodities, which is known as the Emergency Food Assistance Program. Throughout the year, MVCC partners with other organizations, such as the Assistance League of Temecula, Alternatives to Domestic Violence and other area organizations.

For example, along with the Lake Menifee Women’s Club and Cal Fire/Spark of Love, MVCC is also a major sponsor of the area’s annual Santa’s Workshop, which provides toys, games, coats and other opportunities for fun – including a visit with Santa for more than 900 children in the community. Smith admitted the tremendous amount of work and effort that goes into providing these much needed services can be daunting. However, considering the vitally important services provided by MVCC, the group has proven itself to be an invaluable resource for those in the area who need the assistance the most. When asked bout the vitally important service MVCC provides in the community and the important role she plays, Smith said, “This is my dream job. I would do it even if I won the lottery.” For those wanting to contact Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, they can be contacted via email at mvcupboard@verizon.net. Their food distribution center is located at 26808 Cherry Hills Blvd. The number for their food distribution center is (951) 301-4414. exas Roadhouse is a casual dining steakhouse with a

country theme that offers so much more to the community than hand-cut steaks, fall-off-the-bone ribs, made-from-scratch sides, and freshly baked breads. Beginning nearly three years ago, Texas Roadhouse started working with the Riverside County Office of Education, providing job training and life skills to special needs students as part of RCOE’s Transition Partnership Program. Texas Roadhouse first began working with students when the RCOE approached the restaurant looking for employers to add to their Special Education Vocational Education Program. Keith Adamson, one of the restaurant’s managing partners, has a special needs daughter himself, so he readily jumped at the opportunity to be able to partner with the program. One of Texas Roadhouse’s core values is community partnership and they work hard to stay involved in the communities in which their employees – affectionately referred to as “Roadies” – work and live. Continuing their tradition of working with and helping the communities where their restaurants are located, Texas Roadhouse enjoys its relationship with RCOE students, helping to educate them with job and social skills so they have a better chance at being productive members of society. The job training program is designed for special needs students ranging in age from post-high school to 22 years old. Teachers and assistants employed by the school district manage the students who work at Texas Roadhouse and determine which jobs and duties in the restaurant they are assigned. The student’s various potential assignments are based on their personal social skills and individual abilities and are specifically designed to help those students grow emotionally while learning 42

by Trevor Montgomery real-world job skills as well as social and interpersonal skills. “The students are not actual employees of Texas Roadhouse but are working through RCOE’s Transition Partnership Program,” Kathleen Benson, administrative assistant for the Menifee location explained. “They age out and graduate from the program when they turn 22 and are placed in businesses that suit their individual abilities.” During their time working at Texas Roadhouse, students are taught many basic job skills. They learn how to work at the restaurant and receive many training fundamentals, such as how to polish and roll silverware, how to properly clean menus and tables, and how to maintain areas in and around the restaurant. The school district compensates the students while they are involved in the program. “During the school year the students come in four days each week for approximately two and a half to three hours,” said Benson. “During the summer they come in three days each week for the same amount of time. The district trains the students in other ways for the remainder of the day, such as how to take public transportation to and from their jobs.” Gabriela Garcia and Kaelynn Garibay, two WorkAbility students, talked about the work they do and the fun they have at Texas Roadhouse. “I love working here at the restaurant and it is just one of several businesses the students learn job skills and training at,” Garcia said. “I also work at other businesses too. In addition to working at Texas Roadhouse, I also work at Kohls, Payless and MSJC’s Childhood Development Center.” Garibay echoed Garcia’s response, expressing how much she SOURCEBOOK MENIFEE 2016

enjoys working at the restaurant and everything she has learned during her experience with the WorkAbility program and Texas Roadhouse. Each year RCOE holds a graduation ceremony for those students who are aging out of the program. According to Benson, the past two years Texas Roadhouse has treated all the students to lunch following the ceremony. In addition to working with students assigned from RCOE, Texas Roadhouse strives to be as involved in the community as possible. Every year, the restaurant offers a free lunch on Veterans Day for active and retired military personnel. The business also donates certificates for dinner to many local organizations and schools for fundraising raffles and motivational prizes for students. Texas Roadhouse also donates food to many organizations and events. Texas Roadhouse first opened in February 1993, when Kent Taylor opened the company’s first restaurant in Clarksville, Indiana. Taylor’s goal was to own not just a family restaurant, but a place where patrons of all ages could come and have “a great meal and great fun for a great price.” Texas Roadhouse currently has over 500 locations in the United States, Canada, the Middle East and Asia. The restaurant’s food is not the only lure. From their line dancers and jukeboxes to their friendly servers, guests will have more than ample opportunity to enjoy a fun and memorable evening out. According to Benson, Texas Roadhouse handcrafts almost everything they serve. The restaurant provides larger portions so guests get more food for their dollar. On their website, Texas Roadhouse explains, “We’re a family restaurant. And, we believe our family is every member of every community that has a Texas Roadhouse.” Because of Texas Roadhouse’s passion for their guests and communities, the company strongly believes it is important to give back to the communities where their restaurants are located. That is why you are likely to see “Andy the Armadillo” at Little League games or reading to children in local schools. That’s also why many Roadies can be found, both in the restaurant and out in the community, supporting local charitable organizations, schools and fundraisers. From their quality food, large portions and specialty drink offerings, to the way the restaurant serves the communities where their businesses are located, Texas Roadhouse is sure to offer something for each and every one of their guests. To find out more about Texas Roadhouse, visit their website at www.texasroadhouse. com. The Menifee restaurant is located at 29860 Haun Road.

Robert Hollywood Producing Special Events and Helping Businesses Succeed by Robbie Motter Courtesy photo

S

ay hello to Robert Hollywood, local friend, business consultant and public speaker. Have you ever heard the saying, “You’re only six people away from everything you want”? Well, he’s one of those people. Hollywood, a veteran of stage, film and television, said he counts Southern California as his favorite home, but has lived all over the world, including Europe, The Virgin Islands and the Big Island of Hawaii, where he taught dance and martial arts and assisted with the IRONMAN competition. He toured the United States and Europe as a lead singer, dancer and pro multi-language master of ceremonies along with 114 performers from several different countries. Because of his vast experience, Hollywood is available to produce all aspects of your special event. With a background of working on weddings, celebrations and corporate events, he is sure to make your

event a meaningful one. He can provide everything you need, including music, limousines, photography, videography and much more to make your celebration a spectacular one to remember. He’s always looking to surround himself with the best of the best and is open to adding qualified talented people to his professional vendor list. Hollywood has also been successful in helping people build many businesses. He attributes his success to the way he builds relationships. He says they can be fun and easy if you treat people with respect and really listen to what their needs are. Hollywood is the type of person who can help you increase your circle of influence by introducing you and your business to his list of nearly 200,000 people, something that can change your visibility to the general public, overnight. Hollywood and his partners have developed an app where statistics show people look at their phones over 150 times a day. Many are looking to see what businesses

Robert and his associates have added that day. These are eople who are eager to spend money on your business. He also shows people how to get value and never overpay. Studies also indicate that people who have this app save on average between $3,000 and $5,000 a year on things they were already buying. What could you do with a couple extra thousand dollars this year? You can have this app by invitation only for free when you call Hollywood at (949) 698-2975. He lives locally and consequently wants to help local businesses explode. There are literally thousands of people that will buy what you have if you make it appealing for them. Call for your free consultation to see which works best for you. Hollywood can also be reached by email at RobertHollywood@me.com, but whatever you do, take action and call him now! Isn’t this your year for great things to happen for you and your family? – Sponsored Content –

enifee’s Bill Zimmerman, member of Mt. Jacinto College Board of Trustees and Countywide Parks Commissioner representing District 5, is often called upon by the media and teachers to provide information about Menifee Valley history. He likes to call himself “Menifee’s historian in training” and is very active in Menifee’s Historical Association. “About three years ago, I attended a meeting of Menifee’s Historical Association,” said Zimmerman. “At the time there were about eight senior la-

dies and myself at the meeting. However, the meeting began with a program about when electricity first came to the Valley. Many described living with kerosene lamps and wood stoves. They recalled their excitement of the promise of modern power that would soon come to their farm or ranch. I was hooked.” Zimmerman said he hasn’t missed a meeting yet. Each meeting of the Historical Association includes interesting history topics including the one-room schoolhouses, how farmers dealt with drought years or the fight for water rights. Last month, the association was provided a comprehensive biography of the life of Luther “Menifee” Wilson, the gold miner who is the city’s namesake. Some MVHA members’ families homesteaded land in the Valley. Zimmerman is like many Menifee residents who enjoy helping others learn about the valley. He is involved in many Menifee service organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club Board and Arts Council Menifee Board. He was on the City of Menifee’s inaugural Planning Commission in 2008 and currently serves as City Parks and Recreation Commissioner. “I’m keeping busy, and loving it all,” says Zimmerman.
