Blackhawk Middle School presents ‘Annie Junior’
Hockey Players Make Big Impression
Ali Thomas is spending his first year out of high school far from his New York City home playing a game he’s been involved with since he was 10 years old. As a forward for the Chicago Steel hockey team, he trains five days a week and plays games the other two days, with an occasional day off.
Blackhawk Middle School will present “Annie Junior” at 7 p.m April 27 and 28. The one-act musical is based on the classic Broadway musical. The cast is under the direction of Doug Orlyk.
Once a week he breaks from his route to learn about his adopted community in aother way. He and fellow forward Michael Fallon spend one morning a week at Mohawk School, helping struggling students with reading and math. Altogether there are 16 Chicago Steel teammates volunteering at District 2 schools. They are the latest volunteers to join Project CARE, a district-wide student mentor program.
Buy tickets now for End-of-Year Carnival
“I’m happy to be there to help them because I was once one of these kids,” Ali said. “When I was younger I needed extra help learning to read.”
Bensenville District 2 and the local school PTAs are partnering to present an end-of-year carnival celebration in Town Center May 17-20.
The students’ expressions telegraph the positive impact the players are making. Thomas is a perfect example for students. He plans to attend either Cornell or Princeton next year. Michael Fallon spent his hour at Mohawk School working with a kindergartener, helping him sound out words while reading a book. He plans to attend Lowell College on a hockey scholarship next year.
All-Around Amusements will offer a range of rides for every age group, from kiddie rides to family rides and adult rides. Food and games will also be available.
“I think it makes a difference. When someone comes in other than their parents or teachers and tells kids how important it is to do well in school, I think it sends a message.”
In cooperation with the Village of Bensenville, the carnival will be located in the parking lot at Green Street and Addison Road. Blackhawk Middle School, Johnson School, Mohawk School, Tioga/Chippewa PTAs are selling wristbands in advance. The all-access wristband entitle the holder to unlimited rides for the four days. Wristbands are selling for $50 each. Individual tickets and $20 wristbands for four hours on Thursday and Sunday will be available at the event. Proceeds from the carnival will benefit the PTAs and the District 2 technology fund established through the Bensenville Community Foundation.
Project CARE coordinator Lara Schwarz said she is thrilled to have the players in the school. “They are all so well-mannered and disciplined. They are excellent role models,” she said. The Chicago Steel has the same season as professional hockey. You can watch the team play at Bensenville’s The Edge ice arena. Chicago Steel Hockey player Michael Fallon reads with a kindergarten student as a volunteer with Project CARE at Mohawk School.

What it means to Be REAL at Fenton In the fall of 2010, Fenton High School kicked off the Be REAL program, a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support System (PBIS) to address student behavior in a positive manner. Today, just one year after implementing the program, Fenton is celebrating a 25 percent drop in the student suspension rate and an overall increase in a positive school climate. Fenton’s Be REAL program stands for being a Responsible, Engaged, Appropriate Learner. The Be REAL model uses a behavior matrix to provide detailed information on what is expected in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and media center and while riding the bus. The core principle of PBIS and Fenton’s Be REAL program is that by providing students and staff with consistent behavior expectations and teaching those expectations, the result will be fewer behavior disruptions, more engaged learning and an increase in positive interactions among staff and students. Students exhibiting a Be REAL attitude are acknowledged in a variety of ways including 100 percent classroom awards and prize redemption days. Support from the local community has been tremendous. Forest Awards and Engraving donated plaques for classrooms acknowledgements and other local business have donated gift cards, free passes and buy one get one free tickets. FHS staff members have donated a variety of pizza lunches, gift cards and lessons for guitar and art projects.
