CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL INFORMATION
Christmas tree collection through Republic Services will occur the same day as your regularly scheduled refuse pick-up throughout the month of January. If you do not want to send your Christmas tree to a landfill, trees can also be dropped off at the Bensenville Public Works Facility (717 E Jefferson Street) to be chipped and used for local landscaping. Trees can be placed in the mulch bin (by the Public Works salt dome) through the end of January. All tinsel, ornaments, lights, stands, and bags used for transportation must be removed. Only live/natural trees without flocking will be accepted (no garland or wreaths).
SNOW, ICE, AND COLD WEATHER REMINDERS
With winter weather finally here, the Village reminds residents to take the following safety precautions this season:
NO PARKING ON THE STREET | Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. To ensure effective plowing and salting operations vehicles must not be parked on streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto public streets or public alleyways is prohibited.
PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING
| Slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering, and slower braking all are required in winter driving conditions. Drop it and drive. Put down the handheld devices – it, too, is the law in Illinois. Don’t crowd the plow.
PACK A WINTER STORM
KIT IN YOUR VEHICLE | Did you know each winter there are
approximately 810 traffic crashes occur per day in Illinois? We remind residents to prepare their vehicles for optimal operation and to pack a winter storm kit to use if stranded.
Clear snow from around fire hydrants: In an emergency, every second counts! If there is a fire hydrant near your home, the Village encourages residents to do their part to keep it accessible during snowy months. Remove any snow or ice and clear a three-foot perimeter around the fire hydrant to allow firefighters enough space to work.

FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Fenton School Community,
On January 7 we begin the second half of the school year. For a select few, the journey has actually already wrapped up. Congratulations to our Early Grads who took extra classes and finished high school in December – a semester early. Working ahead takes a lot of commitment and is something to be proud of!
And now for a few other updates:
STATE REPORT CARD
Illinois State Report Cards were released October 30 and Fenton was issued a designation of COMMENDABLE, which is the second highest designation and the same designation we received last year.
In addition to this designation, the report card highlights our impressive progress on key educational goals, including:
• Graduation Rate: Fenton’s graduation rate of 88.9% surpasses the state average.
• 9th Grade on Track to Graduate: We saw a significant rise this year to 92.4%, well above last year’s 87.1% and the state average of 88.2%.
• Illinois Science Assessment: Fenton students continue to perform above the state average, reflecting our strong commitment to academic excellence.
While we celebrate these gains, we remain committed to ongoing improvement. This year’s progress shows the impact of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and the district’s Strategic Plan as we steadily recover toward our pre-pandemic levels. We have also placed a special emphasis on improving our school-wide attendance rate this year. We are already seeing marked improvement in our attendance this year and are eager to see those increases reflected on next year’s report card.
Thank you to all our students, teachers, staff, and families for all your hard work.
FUTURE FRESHMEN NIGHT
All 8th grade families at Blackhawk Middle School and Wood Dale Junior High should mark your calendar for Thursday, January 16 and plan to attend our Future Freshmen Welcome Night. This is a great opportunity to learn about your upcoming transition and what Fenton has to offer.
STEM BEAM SIGNING
Finally, as most of you can see the new STEM Wing is taking shape. All of the steel infrastructure is complete, most of the heavy utilities are in place, and concrete floors and roof were added in early December.
We celebrated the addition of these significant structural pieces by signing one of the beams that was later added to the middle of the new two-story wing.
Student leaders as well as various math and science classes took turns signing the beam throughout the day on Tuesday, October 29th. Our teachers and staff were also invited to leave their mark.
This gesture signifies that our students and educators are at the core of everything we do.

Football Team Returns to Dominance
Congratulations to the Fenton football team, Coach Mark Farrell, his staff, and all our students and families that supported the The Mighty Bison this year. Fenton was 6-3 and earned a playoff berth for the first time since 2013. Job well done! We are very proud of the major turnout from last year to this year.
EXPLORING POTENTIAL CAREER PATHS
Thank you to the more than 50 local businesses and organizations that joined our Career Fair on November 20, giving our students a chance to meet industry professionals and ask their own questions.
A special thank you to STR Partners and the Bensenville Youth Coalition for donating funds that went toward raffle prizes for students who toured the fair and engaged with the visiting professionals.
Our Career Pathways programing intends for all students to have a plan(s) for life after high school. What better way to consider your career options than to speak with real people who do the jobs! Bringing all of our partners to the cafeteria at once provided every single student an opportunity to explore areas of interest and then ask their counselors about related courses.
Fenton will continue to have other career-based activities throughout the year. Please let us know if you or anyone you know is interested in attending a jobs fair, being a guest speaker, or welcoming a class to tour your facility. We also need mentors and donors for our new INCubator program, which teaches students how to open their own businesses and be successful. For more information contact Michelle Papanicolaou, Fenton’s Director of Post Secondary Pathways.
BUS DRIVERS WANTED
Bus drivers are among the unsung heroes of all schools. They’re the first person students see on their way to school and the last school employee students see before they get home. Our bus drivers are here early in the morning on the weekends supporting our students while on their way to competitions, they cheer on the Mighty Bison during away games, and celebrate with our students on the way home.
We are seeking a few more drivers to join our phenomenal team. Community members can get a $500 referral prize if they recommend a bus driver who gets hired. Staff members can get a $600 bonus if they recommend a bus driver who gets hired.
Bus drivers can earn $26.64 per hour part-time with a guarantee of four hours per day and good driver bonuses each semester. New hires are eligible for a $3,000 signing bonus after completing one year. Visit fenton100.org for more information and to apply.
making us proud!
FENTON’S JOSSLYN WADE IS AN ALL-STATE RUNNER AGAIN!
Congratulations to junior Josslyn Wade, who qualified for the November 9 IHSA Cross Country State Finals and finished 16th out of 243 runners in the Class 2A meet. The top 25 runners are considered “All-State Runners.” Josslyn also finished 16th in state last year but her time this year was 18 seconds faster.
A Fenton girls cross country runner has earned the All-State Runner designation only two times in our school history, and both instances are Josslyn Wade.
Fenton hosted the Upstate Eight Conference meet on October 19 and Josslyn took second place, setting a new record for being the 7th fastest female to ever run on the course, and fastest Fenton female of all time.
Fenton celebrated Josslyn at the November 20 Board of Education meeting. While being recognized, Josslyn thanked her family, teammates, and coaches.
“I want to thank my coaches, because they really push me and encourage me. I also want to thank my team, who has been the most supportive team ever and it really makes a difference at every competition,” Josslyn told the Fenton School Board.
SHAKESPEARE SLAM GOES TO THE FINALS
Congratulations to the drama students who earned a spot in the Final Bout of the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre SLAM! on December 9 at Navy Pier. They performed a scene from Macbeth.
Students participated in a workshop with representatives from the Chicago Shakespeare Theater earlier in the fall to play with language and topics of famous Shakespeare works. Then back at school with Dr. Mike Mitchell, the team prepared two scenes to perform in unique ways at competition.
FENTON SOCCER TEAM RECLAIMS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Congratulations to our Fenton boys soccer team for winning their third Class 2A Regional Championship in four years. Under the guidance of Coach Vic Ruiz and his staff, the Bison defeated Northside College Prep 2-1 on October 25 to win regionals. They also won regionals in 2022 and 2021. Congratulations to all the players, the managers, their families, and our coaches.

SCHOOL DISTRICT 2
FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Grateful for the gift of growth
Dear BSD2 Community,
As the holiday season surrounds us with its warmth and joy, I find myself reflecting on the many gifts District 2 has received and shared this year. One gift stands out: a gift that isn’t wrapped in ribbons or bows, but is just as meaningful. It’s the gift of growth, which is a gift that keeps on giving.
Over the past year, we’ve embraced an approach to learning that emphasizes “progress over proficiency.” Celebrating each step forward, no matter how small, has empowered our students to see their potential as a journey rather than a destination. The results have been inspiring. Our Illinois State Report Card scores show tremendous improvement. This growth holds the promise of an even brighter future for our students and families.
Of course, growth is deeply aligned with the District’s motto: Learning & Growing Together. These words remind us that education is a shared journey. Together, we are meeting our students where they are, celebrating their progress, and empowering them to engage with and succeed in the ever-changing world that surrounds them. By doing our best — step by step, day by day — we are giving our students the tools they need to dream big and achieve even bigger.
As we look ahead to the new year, I am filled with excitement and hope. We will build on this year’s successes by deepening our commitment to our shared mission. Together, we will continue to support every student, honoring their individuality while equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive.
I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for the role you play in shaping our students’ lives. Thank you for your partnership, your dedication, and your unwavering belief in the power of education. Together, we can transform progress into possibility, and growth into greatness.
May your holidays be filled with peace, love, and joy, and may the new year bring us continued opportunities to learn and grow together.
With warmest regards,
DR. KATIE MCCLUSKEY Superintendent
of Schools
BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2
MAKING THE GRADE
District 2 celebrates ‘Commendable’ schools on 2024 Illinois Report Card
The Illinois State Board of Education has released the 2024 Illinois Report Cards. Bensenville School District 2 is proud to celebrate that all three of our schools have earned a Commendable Designation. This designation is based on several indicators: academic achievement/growth, attendance rates, and the 5 Essentials Survey.
These gains reflect the District’s investments in providing tailored opportunities for learning through a responsive instruction and assessment system. The staff has worked hard to analyze multiple data sources to continuously refine instructional practices to address both student strengths and areas for growth. This data-driven approach has allowed us to focus our teachers’ Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on ensuring that students receive the support they need to succeed through equitable learning and growth opportunities. Additional highlights from the 2024 Illinois Report Card include:
• BSD2 students exceeded the state growth percentile average in both English/language arts and math.
• BSD2 students with IEPs or 504 Plans outperformed the growth of other students within that demographic across the state in both English/ language arts and math.
• BSD2 English Language Learners had a higher than average growth rate in English/language arts than the average growth of ELs across the state.
“The growth we’ve achieved over the past year is truly inspiring!” said Dr. Katie McCluskey, BSD2 Superintendent of Schools. “Our dedicated staff has worked together, responding to students’ needs and implementing effective strategies to drive student growth. I commend both our students and staff for their incredible efforts, and I eagerly anticipate the bright future that lies ahead.”
The Illinois Report Card provides the school community with an opportunity to reflect on last year’s strengths and on areas for continuous improvement. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, we remain dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environment. As we continue to evaluate and improve our practices, we remain focused on our mission to inspire, challenge, and empower all students to reach their full potential.

5ESSENTIALS
Annual survey allows students, parents, and teachers to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions.
Each year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to provide an opportunity for teachers, students, and parents across the District to have a role in improving their schools.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive assessment of school organizational culture with actionable reports to help drive school improvement on five “essential” indicators of success:
• Effective Leaders
• Collaborative Teachers
• Involved Families
• Supportive Environment
• Ambitious Instruction
Between Tuesday, January 21, and Friday, March 28, teachers, students, and parents will be asked to take the 15-minute research-based 5Essentials survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s climate and learning conditions.
On January 21, parents can visit bsd2. org/5essentials to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey.

2024 COATS4KIDS
Thank you Bensenville Community Foundation and Grand Subaru for keeping BSD2 students warm this winter!
Community Friends (formerly the Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary Club) held its 2024 Coats4Kids distribution Saturday, November 2, at W.A. Johnson School.
This annual event was made possible by the generous financial support of Grand Subaru and the Bensenville Community Foundation, which sponsors the new Community Friends group.
Through Coats4Kids, Community Friends provided around 400 new winter coats for BSD2 students and families in need. These families were also able to shop a wide selection of free, donated clothing during Coats4Kids.
Participating families are referred to Coats4Kids by teachers and school staff looking to ensure that every student has a warm coat to wear in the winter. Thanks to everyone who supported Coats4Kids this year!
