bensenville hello!
a lifelong learning community | march/april 2024
Dear Fenton Families and valued community partners,
With Election Day on March 19 these next two pages show you information on our proposed $65 million facility referendum. We encourage everyone to read up on the proposal and make time to vote. We accomplished a flood mitigation project using cash reserves and a reduced STEM wing project using non-referendum bonds. This clears the way, if approved by voters, to do some significant and long overdue infrastructure upgrades with some nearby classrooms being addressed in the process. Please let us know if you have any questions. Aside from that, I have a few other updates:
Graduation
It’s hard to believe graduation is right around the corner! I am so ready to celebrate the Fenton Class of 2024! As a reminder, Fenton’s Commencement Ceremony is Sunday, May 19 at noon. All seniors get four tickets, with overflow seating in our auditorium to watch the livestream. If you live or work in our community, please give a friendly shout out to any Bison graduates you know. They’ve worked hard these difficult last four years.
Spring Musical
Fenton High School’s Theater Department presents Sponge Bob The Musical for its annual Spring Musical this April. This is a Broadway Musical based on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon TV show.
By now I’m sure everyone knows the tag line SpongeBob Square Pants! Why not visit Fenton and shout it with us all at once?
Show dates are scheduled for April 25, 26 and 27. Senior Citizens are invited to a free seniors matinee show at 1 p.m. on April 27 with a complimentary luncheon starting at noon. Seniors can reserve a spot at the senior matinee by call 630.860.8620.
STEM Wing
As we break ground on the STEM Wing in May, we want to remind everyone that construction boundaries will remain in place and should be respected. The back parking lot by our stadium and portions of grass near the auditorium are staging grounds for construction. For safety reasons, please do not try to cut through.
Let’s go BISON!

Fenton has the lowest bond and interest fund tax rate among high school districts in DuPage County. That means Fenton has invested less in its building and learning spaces over the last 25 years or more.
Find Out More
Join our Referendum Town Hall on Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. to learn more about this plan that will maintain our 1950s era school and protect our students. Information is also available online.
Our Kids Are Worth It
Fenton’s reduced $65 million facility referendum will be on the March 19 ballot. If approved, this plan would:
Renovate Our School to Make it Safer for Students and Teachers
Modernize Some Classrooms and Career Learning Spaces for 21st Century Learning
FENTON100.ORG/REFERENDUM
This reduced plan focuses on vital infrastructure such as mechanical systems, air flow, plumbing, electrical, emergency power, networking, asbestos abatement, ADA compliance and more.
The plan also addresses safety needs such as installing sprinklers throughout the building, replacing old security systems, and enhancing electronic door and window monitoring.
Some of the proposed classroom upgrades would be combined with nearby infrastructure overhauls, such as restroom renovations and circuit breaker replacements. Other classroom improvements would support our compliance with the Illinois Career Pathways program.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Celebrate the start of a new chapter in the history of Blackhawk Middle School
BSD2 Families, Staff & Community Members, Please plan to join us to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Blackhawk Middle School renovation project.
BMS GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
THURSDAY, MARCH 21 | 3 PM | BLACKHAWK MIDDLE
SCHOOL, 250 S. CHURCH ROAD IN BENSENVILLE
This exciting project will transform much of Blackhawk’s look, feel and function, and will be completed in time to welcome BMS students and staff when the 2024-2025 school year begins in August. The changes coming this summer will provide BMS students with a state-of-the-art school that aligns with the evolving needs of education: innovative classrooms, collaborative spaces, and updated facilities that will enhance their overall learning experience.
Here are some of this project’s key improvements, identified by students, staff and administrators:
• All new student-tested and staff-approved classroom furniture that can be easily moved and flexibly arranged to readily allow for collaborative learning.
• Installation of new flooring, lighting, and whiteboards in classrooms, and wall-to-wall painting that will bring a brighter, more modern, consistent and cohesive look and feel throughout the building.
• Upgrades to classroom technology to create a wireless environment for both students and teachers.
• Enlargement of 12 classrooms by removing six workrooms currently connected to neighboring spaces.
• Addition of four new classrooms, and conversions of three existing classrooms into as many as nine flexibly divided small-group spaces. These flex spaces can be used for collaborative learning, interventions, and meetings, or as staff workspaces.
• Addition of a new fitness center adjacent to the gym, and conversion of the current fitness center space into a dedicated special education classroom with a sensory room and restroom.
• Remodeling of remaining outdated science rooms, expansion of the health office, and renovation of the school’s two outdoor learning courtyards.
These projects are estimated to cost around $14.9 million, and will be paid for with a combination of savings and bonds.
Truly, this project is about so much more than bricks and mortar; it‘s about our commitment to creating an environment where our students can thrive and prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the future. It’s about the BSD2 community’s collective commitment to learning and growing together.
We look forward to you joining us for our groundbreaking ceremony on March 21, and sharing in the excitement as we begin a new chapter in the history of Blackhawk Middle School.
Sincerely,
DR. KATIE MCCLUSKEYSuperintendent of Schools | BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2

5ESSENTIALS
Annual survey allows students, parents, and teachers to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions
Each year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to provide an opportunity for teachers, students, and parents across the District to have a role in improving their schools.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive assessment of school organizational culture with actionable reports to help drive school improvement on five essential indicators of success:
• Effective Leaders • Supportive
• Collaborative Teachers Environment
• Involved Families • Ambitious Instruction
Between Tuesday, January 30, and Friday, March 29, teachers, students, and parents will be asked to take the 15-minute research-based 5Essentials survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s climate and learning conditions. Parents can visit bsd2.org/5essentials to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS
District 2 is offering free developmental screenings on May 2 and 3.
Do you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5?
Professionals will assess the development of your child’s large and fine motor skills, pre-academic readiness, and speech, language, vision and hearing. The screening will help identify children who qualify for the District’s free preschool program, or who would benefit from additional services prior to entering kindergarten.
Your child must be 3 years old by the screening date to participate. Screenings take about an hour and require an appointment.
For more information, or to make an appointment, call Tioga School at 630.766.2602 ext. 4200.
BABY TALK
District 2’s free Birth-to-3 Parent Education Program helps nurture newborns’ developmental growth
The first three years of life are a period of incredible developmental growth. The experiences a child has during this time help build lifelong skills such as language, self-regulation, and social/emotional competence. The mission of the BSD2 Birth-to-3 Program is to encourage warm, nurturing parentchild interactions that lay the foundation for school readiness, emotional competence, and positive mental health.
The Birth-to-3 Program uses the BabyTALK curriculum to promote healthy relationships during the critical years of child development, and facilitates quality activities that strengthen the parent-child relationship.
The BSD2 Birth-to-3 Program operates year-round and is FREE to all participants. It offers the following activities:
• Home visits with targeted educational supports based on family need
• Age-appropriate educational activities that promote healthy brain development and self-regulation skills
• Developmental assessments
• Referrals to community resources
• Monthly educational workshops in the areas of brain development, nutrition, discipline, and literacy
• Outings to the Bensenville Community Public Library that build literacy and social skills
• Field trips to increase family engagement
To learn more about the Birth-to-3 Program and qualifying requirements, please contact Erika Vilchis at evilchis@bsd2.org, 847.262.1134, or 630.766.2602 ext.4579.
