BENSENVILLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

SEPT./OCT. 2012

Voters to decide Municipal Electric Aggregation The Village Board recently passed an ordinance to place a referendum question on the November 6 ballot that will ask residents whether the Village of Bensenville should participate in Municipal Electric Aggregation. Since the Illinois Legislature passed a bill in 2009 allowing municipalities to aggregate, nearly 250 communities have already voted to approve participation in a combined electricity purchase or aggregation program. Simply put, passage of the referendum authorizes the Village of Bensenville to begin an open, transparent and competitive process to negotiate rates and determine the best offer available. The village will then negotiate the purchase of the combined electric supply to reduce the electric supply rate of the electric bill. If approved, eligible residential and small business customers would be automatically moved to the selected supplier. The only noticeable difference would be a reduced bill; ComEd would continue to transmit the electricity and will still be responsible for all billing as well as repairs and outages. If the referendum passes, residents do not need to take any action in order to participate in the aggregation program and to get the negotiated electric supply price. However, residents who decide not to participate in the aggregation program will need to take action to opt-out. The exact language of the public questions is shown below. A “YES” vote supports the aggregation program and a “NO” vote opposes the program: Shall the Village of Bensenville have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such program?

YES NO

Libraries represent the sum of all human knowledge, and they represent equal access to that knowledge. Libraries represent freedom of expression, celebration of diversity, a playing field that is level, preservation of heritage and commitment to the future. There may be nothing more antithetical to terrorism, hatred, bigotry and fanaticism than the American Public Library. On September 11 each year, the Bensenville Library remains open for the entire 24-hours to conduct business as usual — the facilitation of communication, the fostering of citizenship, the promotion of understanding and the guarantee of freedom to access to information. Throughout that day, the library stands with doors open as a remarkable symbol of freedom. A special guest for this year’s Libraries Remember will be Marion Blumenthal Lazan. As a young girl during World War II, Marion and her family were confined for over six years in concentration camps. She has since devoted her life to traveling throughout the world with a message of tolerance, compassion, strength, courage and forgiveness. Marion will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center. Although they are free, tickets are required for this event and may be picked up at the adult reference desk. Other events scheduled for this year’s Libraries Remember include presentations by Eddy Weiss, the Director of Chasing4Life, a national disaster response team; an introduction to the 9/12 Project; and an evening memorial service in the Library’s garden.

The Library will be closed September 2 and 3 for the Labor Day holiday.

Volunteers gather for a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 4 after a 6-hour Build Day where hundreds worked together to build the playground at Johnson School

Volunteers build ‘dream’ playground with Foresters A dream is now a reality for children in Bensenville as their drawings were turned into a new playground on Aug. 4. In less than eight hours, the play space was built at W.A. Johnson School with the help of more than 200 volunteers from ForestersTM, Bensenville School District 2 and nonprofit KaBOOM! organization. The new playground will serve children and their families in the community for years to come. “Foresters believes in providing opportunities for families to spend quality time together,” said Kasia Czarski, Foresters Senior Vice President, Chief Membership and Marketing Officer. “A playground is an important piece for the revitalization of a community. Not only does it provide a first step towards keeping children healthy, but it’s a safe, central location for the entire neighborhood to get together.”

many parents and residents volunteering and so many local businesses also stepping up to assist in providing supplies and support for the volunteers,” said Superintendent Dr. James Stelter. “We were thrilled to be accepted for a KaBOOM! Project and now the entire community can enjoy the benefits of this special playground.” The playground will be open to the community when the renovation of Johnson School is complete in the fall. During the school day, Johnson School students are using the playground. To see a slide show of the community effort, visits District 2’s Facebook page.

Donate a HolidayTree It is never too early to start planning for the holidays. We are planning a great holiday season for Bensenville children of all ages. You can be a BIG part of these festivities by donating a tree to be used in Town Center. If your tree is chosen, your family or business will be recognized at the event, you will participate in the tree lighting ceremony Sunday, Nov. 18 and you will be given a brick in the ‘Walk of History’ to thank you for your contribution. Please call 630766-8888.

Unbundled brush and branches will be collected from single-family residences four times this year by Village Staff. For collection, brush must be placed at the curb for collection no later than 6 a.m. on Monday of the scheduled removal in neat, manageable piles. Place the cut ends of brush and branches facing the street. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Please do not bundle brush and branches. Root balls cannot be collected. To discard root balls, place small ones inside of the trash container and larger ones next to the container. You may place brush on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week. Please note that each street will receive a single collection during a scheduled week and that placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no service. The current brush collection program has been increased in 2012 to four pickups: • Early Fall Collection begins the week of September 4, 2012 • Late Fall Collection begins the week of November 5, 2012 Please contact the Public Works Department at 630-350-3435 with questions.
