Expanded Recycling & Senior Citizen Discount The Village of Bensenville will be expanding its recycling program with the addition of new, free recycling carts for all single family residents in September. In conjunction with the new recycling carts is a newly created discount on refuse pickup for senior citizens. “The new carts will make recycling even easier and convenient for Bensenville residents,” said Village President Frank Soto “I encourage everyone to use these new carts and recycle as much as possible to keep Bensenville the clean and beautiful place it is.” New Recycling Carts •

All residents receive a 65-gallon rolling recycling cart, free of charge, and can upgrade to a 95-gallon for no additional fee.

These carts will be distributed in September to all homes receiving curb side recycling.

While recycling remains voluntary, beginning in November, these carts must be used for recycling. Allied/Republic Services will be using automated trucks. The driver will be using a cart lifter to empty the recycling cart. The cart lifter is specifically designed for the supplied carts and will not work with other recycling bins.

After 60 days, if you find that the recycling cart is too small, please contact the village and to get a larger cart in its place at no cost.

The materials accepted in the program are the same.

No sorting is required, put all recyclables together in the recycling cart.

New Senior Citizen Discount The Village enacted a 15 percent Senior Citizen Discount for single-family residences where the principle resident of the home is 65 or older. ** Senior Citizens already receiving a water bill discount will automatically receive the waste discount. If you don’t already receive the water discount please call 630-766-8200 to sign up.

Libraries Remember and the 9/12 Generation Project

We believe there can be no more fitting tribute, no more appropriate commemoration of September 11, than for libraries to simply be there. Between 2003 and 2012, we kept the library open for the 24 hours of September 11, using volunteers from the staff and community to host a series of events. Join us this year on September 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Garden of Knowledge for our commemorative service. Instead of our traditional 24-hour commemoration of September 11, we will recognize 9/12/13 with a Celebration of Service, including a Library Open House from 4 - 8 p.m. and a Recognition Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 12. We will showcase our newly remodeled Youth Services Early Learning Center, as well as our Adult Services Information Centers. For all the information on these events as well as the 9/12 Generation Project, see our Fall Program guide or contact the Library at (630) 766-4642.

Class of 2013 Sets Record For Volunteering Volunteering is a way of life for every Fenton High School student. In 2000, the District 100 Board of Education approved the addition of a 25-hour community service graduation requirement for all students. While most Fenton students go beyond the 25 hours required, the Class of 2013 accomplished something extraordinary. During their four years at FHS this group of students completed 19,248 hours (and 15 minutes!) of community service, setting a new school record. Students accomplished this by participating in a variety of volunteer opportunities. They volunteered in classrooms and sponsored blood drives. They organized and helped host the Bensenville Wood Dale Relay for Life, held food drives for the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry and collected donations during the Wood Dale Lions Club Candy Days. Their volunteer reach was local within our elementary feeder schools and global when 57,000 meals were packed in the FHS Field House and sent to Liberia. They also volunteered hundreds of hours as peer coaches to help send the Fenton Special Olympics Basketball Team to a State Championship---TWICE. Many times, FHS staff members and activity sponsors host volunteer opportunities for large groups of students. Students volunteered at Feed My Starving Children packing food for the needy, provided fall clean up in partnership with the DuPage Senior Citizen’s Council and every Wednesday a group of environmentally conscious students organize a recycling program at Fenton. We congratulate the Fenton Class of 2013 for this outstanding achievement and thank them for their time and dedication to our community. We also challenge the Class of 2014. This IS a record that can be broken.

Thursday, October 17 No School Parent Teacher Conferences 12:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 18 12:12 p.m. Dismissal The District 100 Board of Education will hold regular business meetings on Monday, September 30 and Monday October 28. District 100 meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the board room at Fenton Community High School. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

The Board of Education approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Bensenville to expand the storm water detention area on the southeast side of the school property. The agreement will increase the volume of water that can be held there after storms to alleviate flooding along Center Street north of Memorial Road. The project stands as a double benefit for the village, which will use the excavated dirt for the Irving Park Road overpass project at York Road. “This is another example of how the governmental agencies in Bensenville work together to benefit the residents,” said Dr. James Stelter, superintendent. The Village will pay for the excavation and related costs to expand the detention area. The Board of Education has committed to using the land for detention a minimum of ten years. “We are very grateful to District 2 for their consideration of this critical flood control initiative,” said Village President Frank Soto.

This Is The Year! Volunteer With Project CARE to Help Students Succeed Call today to sign up to be a mentor Last school year, 340 volunteers gave District 2 children 6,000 hours of educational support, building students’ self-confidence along with their skills.

An equally significant benefit to the student is the increase in self-esteem and pride through developing a relationship with an adult. “The program allows students to see that people in the community care about their education,” said Sue Vitale, Project CARE coordinator.

Last school year, 340 volunteers worked with students to improve their reading and math skills. Will this be the year you help?

Volunteers need to commit to spending at least one hour a week during the school day with a student. For more information, contact: Lara Schwarz at 630-766.2605

New Officer to Serve District Schools

Officer Irving is a new face at District 2 schools this year. A Bensenville police officer since 2006, he is taking on the role of police liaison for District 2. The school police liaison the product of a long-standing joint agreement between District 2 and the Village. Officer Irving takes over for Officer Banks, who was in the role for four years. Officer Irving will work with students, families, administration and staff to support a safe learning environment. He also serves as a role model for students and helps build trust with community members. Officer Irving, left, will work in all three District 2 schools.
