VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE RECENT CHANGES IN AIRPORT NOISE AND TRAFFIC As you are likely aware, Bensenville has been experiencing an increase in airplane noise and traffic from O’Hare International Airport. Why? There are four recent developments that have caused Bensenville residents to experience an increase in airplane noise. First, on October 17, 2013, the flight patterns changed over Bensenville by the commissioning of a new Runway, 10C/28C, which is an east/west runway roughly aligned with Hillside Drive on the North side of Bensenville. Second, the FAA recently issued a federal directive suspending use of the diagonal runways at O’Hare until the completion of a safety study later this year. O’Hare Airport has three diagonal runways. This FAA directive has resulted in more east/west flights over Bensenville. Third, the reduced number of operational runways has contributed to the repeated violations of the Fly-Quiet Program. This program is intended to restrict air traffic on certain runways between 10pm and 7am. Because this program is voluntary and the reduction of operational runways, the program continues to be violated without any consequences. Fourth, the airport has delayed building an additional runway on the north side of O’Hare. This runway, when built, was intended to relieve the number of flights over Bensenville. Although the Village’s lawsuits attempting to stop the airport expansion ended unsuccessfully long ago, new issues are the cause of the increase in flights over Bensenville. Because of these significant changes, Bensenville has taken a proactive approach to address these issues impacting our community. Village officials have appeared before federal lawmakers and Congressional Aviation staffers, in Washington D.C. to address Bensenville’s concerns regarding the current airport operations and to offer potential solutions to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Congress. The Village also sees possible solutions at the State Level. Bensenville is seeking legislation to enact a better method for measuring noise than the current averaging of day and night noise levels. A best practice for noise measurement currently in place in the State of California is the CNEL. We will be working with our State Legislators to adopt this standard, which will bring relief to many households surrounding the airport. In the Village, Village President Soto created the O’Hare Impact Committee, which holds regular public meetings to discuss airport related issues and to provide updates to concerned stakeholders. The Committee recently suggested the acquisition and installation of noise monitors throughout town to understand the true impacts of these air traffic changes in Bensenville. In the past, the Village efforts had been limited to costly lawsuits which ended unsuccessfully years ago. Now the Village is working towards solutions proactively on multiple levels to bring immediate relief to residents. We are not alone, many other communities have faced or are facing similar issues across the country. Village President Soto is a member of NOISE (www.aviation-noise. org) , a national organization that allows him to work with leaders from other communities throughout the country who are also experiencing similar airport noise issues such as Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Denver. The Village is also working with others here at home. The Village recently joined the organization called FAiR (www.fairchicago. org), which is a grassroots organization that advocates for fair usage of runways at O’Hare as not to negatively impact one community over another. The Village has also been working with other local communities to pass referendum questions showing our Federal and State leaders that we want to be heard and these issues are important to us. Many communities surrounding O’Hare and Midway Airport are placing similar referendum questions on the ballot this November.

Quiet Zone to Provide Noise Relief from Train Horns

MAIN STREET BARBERS 119 West Main Street

Residents along the Milwaukee West/Metra Line in Bensenville will finally see relief from mandatory horn activation at crossings in the Village. On July 8th, the Village of Bensenville received Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approval of a Quiet Zone along this very active freight and commuter rail line. To qualify for the Quiet Zone, the Village will be required to construct certain safety improvements at the Church Road, Addison Street, and Center Street crossings. These improvements include driveway closures and the installation of barrier curbs and flexible delineators to safely channelize traffic at intersections. Also included is a way side horn located at the York Road crossing to provide audible warning of on-coming trains. Work is set to begin this fall.

District 100 meetings are held at 7 pm in the board room at Fenton Community High School. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

To enhance the 21st Century learning environment for all students, Fenton High School is implementing a 1:1 Chromebook initiative at the start of the 2014 – 2015 school year. Through the use of grant and Title 1 funding, every Fenton student will receive a Chromebook at no cost to students and their families. A Chromebook is a notebook computer and mobile device that runs in Google’s cloud based operating system (Source: webopedia). This comes to fruition after several years of research, planning and training. District 100 Board of Education members became familiar with 1:1 learning during an annual National School Board Convention while at the same time, school administrators were learning of this cutting edge advancement in student learning. As a result, research was conducted and several site visits to area high schools were planned. In the summer of 2013, a group of teachers received Chromebook training and during the 2013 – 2014 school year, 22 teachers and 600 students participated in a 1:1 Chromebook pilot program. “I really enjoyed the Chromebooks,” stated Fenton student, Remington Bedoya. “It was a great addition. Teachers can comment and edit with google docs and give insight into your work.” Remington participated in the pilot program during his American Heritage and Environmental Sciences courses at Fenton. To ensure a smooth transition, all parents along with their student(s) were required to attend an informational meeting and sign an acceptable use form. Fenton High School District 100 has enabled filters for safety purposes which will be activated in the building and off campus as well. For more information, please visit the Fenton website and click the YouTube icon. A 1:1 Chromebook video, produced by the Bensenville Cable Station, provides further insight into the 1:1 initiative and features Principal, Todd Leden, Instructional Technology Coordinator, Michael Berago, District 100 School Board Vice President, David Vogel and senior, Remington Bedoya.

Rising to the challenge is Petruchio, who may or may not be out-matched by Kate. A hilarious tangle of misdirection, mayhem, crazy costumes and a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack plays out against a professional wrestling backdrop with great comic effect. By the end, the play reveals the roles everyone is guilty of playing for the sake of love.

Senior Citizens Invited to a Free Matinee Performance of The Taming of the Shrew An exclusive performance of The Taming of the Shrew will be given to Bensenville and Wood Dale senior citizens on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m. There is no admission charge and light refreshments will be served during intermission. Senior citizens interested in attending can make reservations by calling 630 860 8620 from October 13-17. A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS This is our charge….as we look toward the necessary stewardship of Fischer Farm, our native and prairie restoration areas, and even our neighborhood parks. While we are committed to bringing our residents a high level of services and quality parks, we realize that we cannot do it without the help of individuals and school, civic, and neighborhood groups to help us take our parks, and even this Park District, to the next level. We don’t need two hands, but rather hundreds of hands, as we begin to develop a volunteer corps that will assist the Park District in providing help we need. The Fischer Farm operation is going to need help with new farm animals, historic preservation and tours, maintenance, gardening, and providing educational programs. We also have several sites that have been restored with native prairie plants, grasses, and wildflowers that need to be managed with enthusiasm and expertise. Or, you can be a part of the fun by helping out at our many special events or programs. So, this IS my Call for Volunteers, as we look to develop a strong volunteer corps for the Bensenville Park District that will truly help set us apart from neighboring communities. We want to hear from you this fall as we prepare for some current and future projects in each of these areas of our operation. I look forward to hearing from many of you and working side-by-side as we move forward. If you are interested in volunteer work for the Park District, please fill out the Volunteer Interest Survey on our website or ask for a form at the Deer Grove Leisure Center registration desk. Jacob Hortsman is a little more excited than the average sophomore in high school to get back to school in August. Jacob graduated Blackhawk Middle School in 2013 and spent his freshman year at Fenton High School, where he will be missed: he was first in the conference for freshmen/sophomores in the scholastic bowl. He will soon be packing his bags and moving to Aurora to attend the Illinois Math and Science Academy, a publicly funded competitive enrollment high school for gifted students. He had his sights set on IMSA since middle school, and is thrilled at the opportunity as one of 213 9th graders statewide to be accepted from 508 eligible applicants, according to Jackie Salinas, IMSA admissions counselor. His teachers at Blackhawk say his success is an inspiration to so many others at the school. “This makes my job the best in the universe,” said 8th grade math teacher and math team coach Cora Popescu. “He showed the (acceptance) letter to all the students (last May) and it created such excitement. There are so many more kids asking about (IMSA) because they knew Jacob.” Jacob’s mother Linda said she is thrilled for him, but of course bittersweet. “I really want him to excel and go for whatever he is hoping for later in life,” she said. If the student profiles on the IMSA website are any indication, he may be creating mobile Apps as a hobby while applying to medical school or pursuing a career on Wall Street. Jacob is the youngest of three brothers. He isn’t quite sure where his studies will lead him, and he says he’s open to anything. “Life will be all studying. I definitely anticipate a lot of work, but fun courses too. There are lots of great students – not the typical nerd type – they’ve very social and love communicating about the ideas they have,” he said. And, every six weeks he will spend the weekend at home.

BSD2 Hosts the Innovate, Transform, and Inspire Through Standards, Assessment, and Differentiation Workshop To kick off the summer, Bensenville School District 2 proudly hosted a three-day workshop for teachers featuring nationally recognized speaker Dr. Carol Ann Tomlinson. The workshop took place June 11th13th at Tioga School. This workshop was supported by the Illinois North Educator Leadership Cadre. The workshop provided breakout sessions featuring national speakers and school based educators, including teachers and administrators from District 2 on the implementation of the new Illinois Learning Standards, assessment-driven differentiation, PARCC accommodations in day-to-day practice, and close read lessons.

A total of 175 educators from surrounding counties collaborated over the three days to take best practices back to their colleagues and schools. With the multiple break-out sessions teachers and administrators could choose the best fit for their needs. This included visiting summer school classrooms at Johnson School to see teaching and learning in action. Presenters shared their experiences, challenges, student samples and videos with the educators in their session. Tioga School was the setting of innovative and collaborative work that created a forward progression of teaching and learning with the common goal of supporting achievement for all students.

Volunteer with Project CARE to Help Students Succeed This fall, make a difference in a child’s life and be part of the volunteer team in District 2! Project CARE Plus stands for Citizens Active in Reading Education plus math. The Project CARE Plus program coordinators will provide all the materials and training needed to participate. For many kids today, learning requires more than the typical classroom setting can provide. Students who, for a number of reasons, have fallen behind their peers in reading and math skills need small group or individual attention than is possible in a classroom setting. Research shows that children can learn faster and become more selfreliant when they are taught this way. The Project CARE program provides this special attention. An equally important benefit to the student is the increase in self-esteem and pride through developing a relationship with an adult. “The program allows students to see that people in the community care about their education,” said Sue Vitale, Project CARE coordinator. Volunteers are asked to commit to spending at least one hour a week during the school day to participate in the program. For more information, contact: W.A.
