LATIN DESSERTS

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 | 6:30 PM | AT THE LIBRARY | ALL AGES Did you know that chocolate originates from ancient Mayans and Olmecs in Mexico? It comes from the fruit of cacao, which is native to Central and South America. The word chocolate comes from the Aztec word xocatl, and was revered as food of the gods. Legend has it that the notorious Aztec king Montezuma drank gallons of chocolate each day for energy and as an aphrodisiac. Originally consumed as a bitter drink, chocolate then evolved and became sweetened after arriving in Europe, turning into the favorite treat that we all love today. Come join us as we learn and taste the different kinds of chocolate found in delicious Latin desserts. Registration is not required to attend, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

ALEBRIJES: MEXICAN FOLK ART

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 | 6:30 PM | AT THE LIBRARY | ALL AGES At the library you’ll get the chance to make a one-of-a-kind paper mâché art project, known as alebrijes, Mexican folklore mythical creatures. First created by Mexican artist Pedro Linares in the 1930s, who came up with the idea after a vivid feverish dream he had of strange mythical creatures that possessed elements from different animals. He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with an eagle head, and all of them were shouting the word, Alebrijes! Alebrijes gained popular exposure in the United States with the 2017 Disney film I. Come hang out and get crafty with us! Registration is not required to attend, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
