Below are a few tips to help avoid being a victim:

It is recommended children go only to homes they are familiar with and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. As a friendly reminder, children should be cautioned of the dangers of running out from between parked cars, across yards, and reminded to look both ways before crossing the street. Have a fun and safe Halloween!

• Check the name on email or websites and make sure they match the name and address of the company you do business with. Look for misspellings or slight alterations.

The popularity of mobile payment apps like Cash App and Venmo is giving rise to incidents of scammers using these digital networks to bilk ComEd customers out of their hard-earned money. ComEd urges customers to be aware of these new fraud attempts so they identify and avoid them.

First created by Mexican artist Pedro Linares in the 1930s, who came up with the idea after a vivid feverish dream he had of strange mythical creatures that possessed elements from different animals. He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with an eagle head, and all of them were shouting the word, Alebrijes! Alebrijes gained popular exposure in the United States with the 2017 Disney film I. Come hang out and get crafty with us! Did you know that chocolate originates from ancient Mayans and Olmecs in Mexico? It comes from the fruit of cacao, which is native to Central and South America. The word chocolate comes from the Aztec word xocatl, and was revered as food of the gods Legend has it that the notorious Aztec king Montezuma drank gallons of chocolate each day for energy and as an aphrodisiac. Originally consumed as a bitter drink, chocolate then evolved and became sweetened after arriving in Europe, turning into the favorite treat that we all love today. Come join us as we learn and taste the different kinds of chocolate found in delicious Latin desserts. Registration is not required to attend, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Strategic Plan 2.0

COVID-19 and Interventions Fenton is continuing with all of its health and safety mitigations around the building, and we are still encouraging our students and families to get vaccinated and boosted. The COVID-19 Pandemic is still a reality. We are continuing to use our federal ESSER funding to help our students catch up from the abrupt changes to learning these past few years. We have made progress and will be more aggressive this year in making sure no one falls through the cracks. Our staff will step in more often to identify student needs and ways to overcome their obstacles. We urge our families to embrace these opportunities!

Having goals to strive toward is critical, and with the beginning of the school year we will make our first strong push into the new set of three-year goals aimed at elevating our students and strengthening our school. We are excited to up our game, and to discover a new level or prosperity. More information on the Strategic Plan can be found on our website under the district tab. Let’s go BISON!

• Social-Emotional Growth

JAMES ONGTENGCO | Superintendent FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

Last fall we created the second version of our Fenton Strategic Plan, with much help from the students, parents, and staff who volunteered on the steering committee. A Strategic Plan is important because it acts as Fenton’s roadmap for the next three years, and guides important decisions in the following areas:

• Student Life • Communication, Collaboration and Community

• Securing the Future

School is back and we enjoyed a fun Spirit Week to start the beginning of our second year of full in-person learning since the outbreak of COVID-19. We are excited to be back to our normal routines and traditions. Homecoming is a few weeks away and it’s going to be a blast! We hope to see you all there. Our team at Fenton is committed to guiding our students and our school itself toward the best possible future. The start of a new school year is the best time to review and jointly commit ourselves to common goals. Below are a few important updates: 988 Crisis Line Individuals experiencing a crisis or any other kind of emotional distress – whether it’s related to suicide, mental health and/or substance use – can dial 988 on their phones and be connected directly to compassionate, trained professionals. This resource is provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services/Division of Mental Health. Dialing 988 is the mental health version of dialing 911. School, and life in general, can be stressful at times. We urge our students to contact their counselor or trusted adult at Fenton if they need to talk through any of their feelings. But if a crisis is occurring outside of school hours, please remember this new lifeline. It’s as simple as dialing 988 on the phone.

• Teaching and Learning Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Fenton Grows Career Pathways through Corporate Partnerships

I’ve felt that vibrant spirit since December when the BSD2 Board of Education named me the new Superintendent of Schools. I also felt it this spring, when I joined the community in developing the District’s new strategic plan, and I’ve continued to feel it since I officially joined the District on July 1. I’ve spent my first few weeks in the District getting to know its staff and its programs, and familiarizing myself with the community we serve. While I still have much to learn and many more people to meet, I am already impressed by District 2’s commitment to Learning & Growing Together

That is our new motto, and it is just one part of our new, five-year strategic plan. We also updated our mission and vision statements, beliefs, and strategic priorities, which are outlined on the next page. The plan is the product of input from many stakeholders across our community. To develop it, students, parents, teachers, support staff, community leaders, administrators and members of the Board of Education all shared their perceptions of BSD2 schools and their vision for the future through interviews, focus groups, surveys and task force meetings.

2 SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 welcomestudents!back,

To me, though, that motto – Learning & Growing Together – is what it’s all about!

The start of each school year is always exciting because students, staff, parents, and community members approach what lies ahead with such optimism and positive energy.
