FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL
DEAR FENTON FAMILIES AND VALUED COMMUNITY PARTNERS,
Please make a plan to vote this November 8. The ballot is full of very important topics, including a Fenton High School building referendum.
We work hard to instill a sense of civic responsibility in our students, and voting is definitely a critical function of a community. We should all make the time to vote! It leads to progress and develops a picture of our joint priorities.
A $99 million community-driven plan to renovate, modernize, and expand Fenton High School will address critical deficiencies in our 1950s school building and the surrounding campus. It would allow us to transform our educational programs to better compete with others in DuPage County.
You can learn more in the sections below, and the pages that follow. You can find the most information on our website fenton100.org/referendum.
Vote!
You can early vote up until Monday, November 7 at:
• Bensenville Police Station (345 E. Green Street, Bensenville)
• Addison Township Office (401 N. Addison Road, Addison)
• Itasca Park District Water Park (100 N. Catalpa Street, Itasca)
On Election Day, Tuesday November 8, you can vote at any polling place in DuPage County. They now have the technology to get your ballot anywhere. That means you can stop somewhere more convenient on your way home or during your lunch break.
Who Benefits?
All of us! If approved, construction would take three years, and current students would see some level of improvement over that time. Our young families at Tioga, Johnson, Blackhawk, Oakbrook, Westview, and Wood Dale Junior High would see the biggest upside to having state of the art learning spaces at Fenton.
Investing in schools adds value to the entire community, and infuses a stronger work force into the economy. Good schools keep our neighborhoods healthy and full of prospering, respectful, and ambitious children. That in-turn leads to a strong housing market.
Financials
Proceeds from the referendum can only be used for building improvements. Fenton is legally bound to the words and descriptions you will see on your ballot.
Fenton has the lowest bond and interest fund tax rate among high school districts in DuPage County. What does that mean? It means all the schools around us have completed construction upgrades, but our debt is lowest because we haven’t had a building referendum since 1975.
BUILDING REFERENDUM
NOVEMBER 2022
Our Fenton High School District 100 community works together to ensure all our students become successful, passionate learners, but there’s one significant obstacle we just can’t overcome: the lack of space in our aging school building. We make do with what we have in our 1950s building, but our second-rate facilities are keeping our students from reaching their full potential.
Our infrastructure has been extended well beyond its useful life. Mechanical systems, plumbing, and electrical systems need to be addressed to keep the building safe and healthy. Our classrooms and learning areas are small and outdated. Our security system needs improvements. Flooding at building entries continues to be problematic. Fenton’s athletic, music facilities and auditorium are sub-par and old.
Our kids deserve better. We developed this plan together. Then the community asked us to reduce the cost even further. We listened, and reduced it by over $30 million.
The $99 million community-driven plan to renovate, modernize, and expand Fenton High School will appear on our November 8 ballots as a referendum. If the referendum is successful, we will be able to:
• Renovate Our School to Make it Safer for Students and Teachers
• Improve Our Programming and Career Learning Spaces
• Modernize Our Classrooms for 21st Century Learning
With improved and safer facilities, our students will perform better.
They’ll reach their full potential through blended learning, STEM, extracurriculars, and sports. They’ll have more opportunities to follow their passion, graduating healthier, more well-rounded, and ready for high-wage careers.
BUILDING REFERENDUM
NOVEMBER 2022
Our kids deserve the same opportunities provided by other districts in DuPage County. This plan we developed together will provide safer, 21st century learning spaces for all our students.
Renovate Our School to Make it Safer for Students and Teachers
The referendum will create an even safer and more secure environment through updated security systems, door and window monitoring, electronic door locks, and a storm shelter. We will also be able to address life safety and infrastructure needs such as mechanical systems, air flow, plumbing, bathrooms, sprinklers, electrical, emergency power, networking & cabling, corridors, asbestos abatement, drainage, stormwater
Improve Our Programming and Career Learning Spaces
We will improve our programming and career learning spaces so each and every student continues to have the opportunity to succeed in anything they choose. We’ll provide increased opportunities for students through optimized and dedicated spaces for STEM, applied tech, culinary, construction, health sciences, bio med, special education, and life skills programming.
Modernize Our Classrooms for 21st Century Learning
Modernized and expanded classrooms will give students 21st century learning spaces with modern features to effectively implement current and future curriculum, facilitate collaboration, and allow for more individual and small group instruction. Additional and larger classrooms will provide space for more engaging student activities, and more movement for student health.

This includes obtaining information from homeowners on the type of material of their water service.

ONCC APPROVES NIGHTTIME RUNWAY ROTATION PROGRAM AT O’HARE
Earlier this summer, the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission approved a Nighttime Runway Rotation Plan for O’Hare International Airport. Bensenville is an active member of the commission and played a key role in moving this plan forward. While this rotation schedule doesn’t completely resolve the airplane noise issues in Bensenville, we believe it will provide residents predictability and some relief at night. The plan needs to be reviewed by the Federal Aviation Administration and is expected to take about a year before it can be implemented at the airport. For additional information, please visit: oharenoise.org
The Village needs your help in gathering the information necessary for the inventory. Residents may either complete an online inventory survey at bit.ly/3BNinAa or schedule an inhouse inventory appointment by calling 630.594.1011. Every home must be included in the inventory. The sooner we complete the survey, the sooner we may obtain funding to replace the lead service lines found in our system. Funds are limited and will be distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis, so the Village would like to complete our survey and get our funding request in before the funds run out. Please complete the survey or schedule your appointment today!
Don’t Be a Turkey! Dispose of Fats, Oil, and Grease Properly
As turkey dinners are served throughout the country, our Public Works department urges you to think before disposing fats, oils, and grease this holiday season.
Butter, cooking oil, meat drippings, gravy and salad dressings solidify in the sanitary sewer and build up over time to create clogs. You can prevent clogged pipes in your own home, and clogs in the sewers by managing grease correctly. Collect pan drippings, bacon grease, and dressings in a sealable container and dispose in the trash. Wipe residual oils from pots, pans, and dishes with dry paper towels before washing. Most importantly, never pour grease down sink drains or toilets.
Frying a Turkey this year? Let the used oil cool, transfer it into a sealable container, and then drop it off at Bensenville Public Works so it can be recycled into biodiesel. There is a permanent drop off location at the Public Works Facility, 717 E. Jefferson Street (right next to the salt dome and free mulch bin).

BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2
TIME FOR A NEW LOOK
District 2 introduces new Learning & Growing Together logo
learning and growing together!
District 2 has a new motto: Learning & Growing Together. That motto is just one part of the District’s new, five-year strategic plan. The District also updated its mission and vision statements, beliefs, and strategic priorities. And now it has introduced a new logo to symbolize those ideals.
During the September 21 Board of Education meeting, the District unveiled its new logo depicting its new Learning & Growing Together motto. The logo, which is shown to the left, was chosen earlier this school year in an online survey of students, staff, parents and community members.
FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Together we can do anything!
Greetings BSD2 Families, Students, Staff and Community Members,
Earlier this fall, District 2 came together for its first Learning & Growing Together Day. Students and staff all across the District spent this wonderful day celebrating the District’s new motto in their own unique ways.
The smiles in the photos say it all – the day was as fun as it was meaningful! Personally, I will always remember the contagious energy in our buildings and the priceless smiles on our students’ faces as they brought our new motto to life.
That motto—Learning & Growing Together”—was developed by our entire community. Staff, students, parents, and community members all came together to develop our strategic plan, and through that work expressed a strong desire to develop this new statement encapsulating our beliefs and ideals as an institution.
Learning and growing together is the key to every successful organization and I couldn’t be more proud of our staff and students and our launch of the school year.
Earlier this fall, we also unveiled our new BSD2 logo to go with this motto. The final selection was revealed to the Board of Education during its September 21 meeting as we presented some of our strategic plan work. These District priorities and goals we’ve set for ourselves in this new plan will require us to breathe life into our new motto every day as we move forward throughout the year.
With our District’s strong commitment to learning and growing together, there isn’t anything we can’t accomplish together!
Sincerely,
DR. KATIE MCCLUSKEY
Superintendent of Schools BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2
IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY New BSD2-Fenton Early Childhood Education partnership pairs aspiring teachers with classes at Tioga
District 2 and Fenton High School launched a new partnership through Project CARE this fall, pairing high school students interested in becoming elementary educators with classes at Tioga School.
Fenton has participated in Project CARE for 20 of the volunteer academic mentoring program’s 27 years in existence. During that time, students have earned community service hours by visiting BSD2 schools once a week during study hall and spending about half an hour working with students.
Now, Fenton students participating in this new partnership will spend close to an hour each week working with a class at Tioga. They will form stronger relationships with the students and teachers in their classes, and gain valuable, reallife insight into their future careers as teachers.
“We’re excited to see these Fenton students engage with our students throughout the year,” said Lara Schwarz, Project CARE Coordinator. “They are serious about pursuing careers in education, and by partnering with our teachers at Tioga, they can make this an impactful experience for themselves and for the kids in their classes.”
By providing these kinds of experiences for aspiring educators, Project CARE has already created a pipeline connecting District 2 to new teachers looking to begin their careers. Students at Elmhurst and Lewis Universities and College of Dupage often serve as volunteer academic mentors through Project CARE, establish connections that lead them to become student teachers in BSD2 schools, and then begin their careers here once they graduate.
“We hope this program really extends that pipeline to Fenton, and that years from now we see the students in this partnership return to teach in our schools once they’ve earned their degrees,” said Mrs. Schwarz.
CELEBRATE!
District 2’s dual-language kindergartners learn about Hispanic culture through colorful art projects
Dual-language kindergartners at Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by creating art that explored elements of Hispanic culture.
At Tioga, students in Mrs. Esparza’s class learned about famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and created their own versions of her well-known still life paintings of fruit. And Tioga students in Ms. Negrete’s class learned about the monarch butterfly’s annual migration from Canada to Mexico, and made their own colorful paintings of these mariposas
At Johnson, students in Mr. Campos’ and Mr. Cazares’ classes learned about the mythical importance of the school’s mascot, the jaguar, in ancient Mayan culture, then put paint to paper to create their own versions of these colorful creatures.

PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
November 8 presentation will help parents teach their children the importance of family
Bensenville School District 2 and Fenton High School’s Padres Unidos are partnering this year to present a yearlong parent education series facilitated by Chicago-area psychologist Dr. Ferney Ramirez.
The third offering in the series will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, at Blackhawk Middle School, located at 250 S. Church Street in Bensenville.
Titled Positive Involvement – a Need: Connected Parents – Educating Children with Leadership, the presentation will help parents teach their children the importance of family and build relationships between parents, children and their siblings. This presentation will be offered in English and Spanish. Childcare and food will be provided.
AFTER-SCHOOL SPECIAL
A quarter of the District’s students are now participating in grant-funded community school programs
More District 2 students than ever are now staying after school when the bell rings each day.
That’s because they’re enjoying a variety of after-school activities presented by the Frida Community Organization and funded by a prestigious 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the Illinois State Board of Education.
This programming largely began in late September, and so far has attracted 526 of the District’s 2,137 students to enroll in more than 50 clubs and activities, most of which are offered after school. These community school programs include …
• Homework Help
• STEM and Book Clubs
• Spanish Instruction
• Latin and Folkloric Dance Lessons
• Introduction to Guitar
• Craft Clubs and Digital Art Lessons
• Cooking and Gardening Clubs
• Soccer and Sports Clubs
• Strength Training and Girls on the Run
• Yoga and Martial Arts
• Jewelry and Fashion Clubs
• LEGO and Board Game Clubs
District 2 and Fenton High School were awarded the 21st Century grant in the fall of 2018. It provided them $3 million over the course of five years to fund critical community schools initiatives. Since 2019, the grant has given Fenton, Blackhawk, Johnson and Tioga $150,000 a year each to partner with Frida and provide programs focused on such topics as academic enrichment, arts integration, technology, social-emotional learning, college and career readiness, and parent and family support.
In addition to these after-school programs for students, 21st Century grant dollars have helped fund the BSD2 Community Center at Tioga School, and a variety of programs and services for parents and families.
IT WAS LIT!
Author and comic artist Jarrett Lerner visits Blackhawk, stays for annual Literacy Night festivities
Earlier this fall, author and comic artist Jarrett Lerner visited Blackhawk Middle School. Mr. Lerner is the creator of the EngiNerds and Geeger the Robot book series. During his visit, he not only spoke to BMS students about his life and work; he also worked together with them to create new comics. Later that evening, the school held its annual Literacy Night, which featured another presentation from Mr. Lerner and a variety of fun literacy-related activities.
DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS
District 2 is offering free developmental screenings on Friday, December 2
Do you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5?
Professionals will assess the development of your child’s large and fine motor skills, pre-academic readiness, and speech, language, vision and hearing. The screening will help identify children who qualify for the District’s free preschool program, or who would benefit from additional services prior to entering kindergarten.
Your child must be 3 years old by the screening date to participate. Screenings take about an hour and require an appointment.
For more information, or to make an appointment, call Tioga School at 630.766.2602 ext. 4200.
