BENSENVILLE COMMUNITY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Forever!
THE LIBRARY IS GOING FINE FREE — EXCITING NEWS: we will soon be fine free! Starting July 1, the
Bensenville Community Public Library will no longer charge fines for overdue items to any patrons who check out those items at our library. Below are a few frequently asked questions about going fine free. To read our full Fine Free Policy, visit benlib.org/fine-free. What if I currently have overdue fines on my account?
On July 1, we will be removing all existing fines for overdue BCPL materials and we will no longer be charging fines for materials checked out from BCPL in the future. What happens if I lose or damage an item I checked out?
You will be charged a fee to replace the item. What if I use my Bensenville Library card to check out an item from another library?
If you check out an item from a library that does charge fines, you’re still responsible for paying any fines to that lending library. Are all items fine free?
A few types of items are subject to fines, including hotspots and specialty items. Will I have to wait longer for popular items to be returned?
Libraries that have gone fine free have not seen any difference in when items are returned. Most items are returned within a week of their due date. How will overdue items be treated now?
Each item will still have a due date and you are still responsible for honoring that due date. Returning items on time helps your neighbors borrow items sooner. However, if an item(s) is 14 days overdue, your account will be blocked. Once that item(s) is 42 days overdue it is considered lost and you will be charged for the item plus a recovery fee for each lost item. Returning the item(s) will clear those charges. How will the Library recoup the revenue lost by going fine free?
Fines account for only a very small percentage (approximately .1%!) of our operating budget, and this number has decreased over time. When we implemented our popular auto-renewal policy, we saw a dramatic reduction in overdue fines.

UFOS AND THE SOCIAL RESPONSE
THURSDAY, MAY 20 AT 7PM LIVE ON ZOOM Mentions of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (previously called UFOs) have been slipping into mainstream news more often in recent years, with declassified naval videos being featured in the New York Times and Washington Post. The Department of Defense publicly acknowledges the existence of UAP and is evaluating them as a potential National Security Threat, yet in the course of our daily lives the topic seems condensed to only two minute blurbs on the evening news. Understanding UAP would greatly alter our world view, yet it lies tucked away in the shadows...why? Join Sam Maranto, a UFO investigator, and currently the state director for the Illinois chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) as he helps shed light on the way our society confronts these potentially paradigm shifting revelations.

We’re almost done, and in more ways than one. This extremely unusual school year is almost complete, and we are so proud of our students for facing a challenge no one has seen before. Thankfully our hybrid/in-person schedule and modified sports seasons have brought us back together as we wrap up this school year. Concurrently, the pandemic appears to be on a big decline, thanks to our many vaccination efforts and our collective commitment to safety. Below you will find numerous updates as we look forward.
Fenton’s Vaccination Efforts Due to strong relationships with vaccine distributors, most notably JewelOsco, Fenton coordinated two-dose vaccinations for approximately 2,200 local educators and municipal workers, approximately 1,500 senior citizens in our community, and 1,600 hard to reach members of our community. These lifesaving efforts bring us a bit closer to normality and, we hope, keeps all of our families intact. Thank you to all of our heroic staff members and community partners who helped operate these events.
Graduation, Prom & Senior events Class of 2021 (and all students), thank you for coping and dealing with the pandemic. We know this is not how you imagine your senior year. We are trying to do our best to have some resemblance of a normal senior year. • • • •
Senior Awards will be on May 13th in our stadium. Prom is scheduled for Friday, May 14th. Senior Brunch is tentatively scheduled on May 14th Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, May 16th in our stadium. The number of spectators will depend on health department guidance. Let’s hope for a dry day. If it rains, we will reschedule.
Dr. Sam Bentsen New Principal/Associate Superintendent of Fenton We are pleased to announce that Dr. Sam Bentsen has been appointed as Principal/ Associate Superintendent of Fenton starting July 1, 2021. He currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Fenton and will ensure a smooth and immediate transition of leadership. Dr. Bentsen is committed to student success, equity and social justice, and safety and wellness of students, staff and the community.
Summer School & Next Year Traditional summer school and our dynamic Summer Matters programming will occur fully in-person with lunch provided. We are also planning to start our 2021-22 school year with pre-pandemic in-person classes. As you contemplate what this will be like for your family, please remember that most of our current safety precautions (including the use of face coverings) will likely continue into 2022. Fenton will vigorously monitor health department guidelines.

Karissa Lara Wins SPEECH STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in Two Events FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL | District 100 1000 West Green Street Bensenville | Illinois 60106 630 766 2500 www.fenton100.org Mission Statement Cultivate successful, passionate learners through rigor, relevance and relationships.
Congratulations to junior Karissa Lara for becoming a DOUBLE STATE CHAMPION! During the IHSA Speech State Finals in February she took first place in BOTH of her events, Informative Speaking and Poetry Reading. Karissa is Fenton’s first double state champ in speech since 1994.
“My heart is full of joy, pride and gratitude,” Karissa said. “I am beyond thankful for my speech coaches, Ms. Hendricks and Ms. Feinberg, who spent countless hours, long nights, and weekends helping me — and so many other students — find the truth behind their pieces and create passionate performances that touch the lives of others. I’m also so grateful for my parents who shower me with love, support and encouragement — and don’t mind my long Saturday afternoons.” Karissa said she has felt unheard at times in her life, but Fenton Speech Team has allowed her to speak her mind uninterrupted with supportive coaches who help her maximize the power of her voice. “My Poetry program discussed the trials and tribulations of being a woman in today’s society and the challenges that come with being a female,” Karissa said. A week before regionals, Coach Hendricks challenged Karissa with creating a new poetry selection to add to her already outstanding program. Karissa embraced the chance to elevate her approach and she carried that addition throughout the state tournament. “Intensive one-on-one coaching sessions with Karissa are always a joy because she leans into learning nuance and interpretation skills,” Coach Hendricks said. “I love collaborating with speech students on their program choices. What’s more, is that she trusts me; together, we work as a partnership. Karissa is truly an unstoppable force.” Coach Melissa Feinberg said she is proud of the “strong, capable, and dedicated person” Karissa has become. “Working with Karissa in Informative Speaking has been CBD-elightful,” Coach Feinberg said. “Her informative speech, which is about CBD (short for cannabidiol), was such a complex topic to explore. What’s wonderful about Karissa as a performer is her ability to explore and communicate this complexity in a way that makes the information easy to understand. She delivers her speech with an ease and confidence far beyond her years.” This event was yet another opportunity for Karissa to realize the potential impact her voice carries. “My Informative speech uncovered the benefits and drawbacks of CBD and how it affects our daily lives in ways we may not realize,” Karissa said. “It is such an overwhelming and powerful feeling knowing that I can make a difference doing something that I love. Being able to express myself through my voice is a gift that I will treasure throughout my life.” In total, four Fenton students competed in six events at state. Karissa was joined by Evelyn Perez (Special Occasion Speaking), Alexander Pizarro (Original Oratory), Carolina Rosas (Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation). Coach Nicole Hendricks said each of them walked away without regrets and left it all on the stage. Junior Carolina Rosas advanced to the Day 2 final rounds in the Humorous Interpretation event and she took 6th in state. Overall, Fenton tied for seventh in state. All four students and both coaches were recognized during Fenton’s March Board of Education meeting.

welcome! DR. SAM BENTSEN APPOINTED NEW PRINCIPAL OF FENTON HIGH SCHOOL
2 MUSICIANS QUALIFY FOR STATE
President Wedemann and the rest of the Board of Education congratulates Dr. Sam Bentsen for being appointed Fenton’s next Associate Superintendent/Principal, effective July 1. The March 17 vote to appoint Dr. Bentsen was unanimous. Dr. Bentsen is currently Fenton’s Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Operations. He was a vital leader in Fenton’s efforts to create a virtual school early in this pandemic and then institute safety precautions for Fenton’s current hybrid model. “I’m thrilled by the Board’s decision to accept our hiring committee’s recommendation,” Superintendent James Ongtengco said. “Dr. Bentsen has 20 years of school administrator experience both at the building and district levels. His strong relationships with our staff and the board, especially during this crisis, will allow him to hit the grounding running and commence his transition immediately.” Dr. Bentsen joined Fenton in 2018 from nearby DuPage High School District 88, where he oversaw Special Education programming, Disciplinary practices, Guidance programming, and Safety and Security. He also was Willowbrook High School’s assistant principal for seven years after having been their Director of Deans. Originally a social studies teacher and a head coach in three different sports, Dr. Bentsen said he is excited to be the face of Fenton High School encouraging students to pursue their passions. In his current HR role, Dr. Bentsen is already very familiar with the staff and structure of Fenton’s diverse programming.
“I am absolutely humbled by the decision to trust me with this important role in the bright future of Fenton High School. I understand that I have been appointed to lead the district through a variety of critical initiatives, including our steadfast commitment to equity and social justice,” Dr. Bentsen said.
Junior Anna Micor senior Bart Sporna were recognized during District 100’s February virtual board of education meeting. Anna qualified for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All State Band playing the Piccolo. Bart qualified for the ILMEA All State Honors Choir.
Mr. Jovan Lazarevic, Fenton’s current Associate Superintendent/Principal, accepted a position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at Lake Park High School District 108. “Thank you Principal Lazarevic for your strong leadership over the years and congratulations on your new adventure,” President Wedemann said. “Dr. Bentsen provides Fenton with both stability and innovative ideas for building upon the momentum Mr. Lazarevic and Mr. Ongtengco have created.”

SUMMER CAMPS We are excited to once again be offering our lineup of UNDER THE SUN summer camps. Camps will look a bit different to keep everyone as safe as possible, as we adhere to all IDPH and CDC guidelines, but we know we’ll still have a blast. During each exciting day, campers will participate in a wide variety of engaging games, projects, crafts, and of course, daily swim time at the water park. Visit BvilleParks.org/Programs/Camps for details on each camp we offer. Time is almost up, so don’t miss out, on our early bird discount. Register by 6 pm Friday, May 7 and save $10 off each full session (10 days). You may also take advantage of our multiple child discount during this time.
PROGRAMMING After a long break from in-person programming it feels good to once again be offering a full lineup of it. While class sizes are smaller and curriculums have been modified to promote social distancing and other safety measures, our Summer Program Guide is packed with programming for those of all ages and interests. From dance to art to paddle boat tours, we have something for you to enjoy this summer. Be sure to check out our Summer Program Guide, if you haven’t already, to find something new to experience this summer.
TINY TOT PRESCHOOL Tiny Tot preschool resumes in-person this upcoming August, and we cannot be more excited. Our curriculum, based on Illinois Early Learning Standards, emphasizes self-discovery, teamwork, and independent thinking. Children are introduced to Language Arts, Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science and Nature Exploration through a variety of learning centers and hands-on activities. Spaces are limited and filling quickly, so get your tiny tots signed up early. 10

District 2 began offering four full days of in-person instruction each week on April 27. Prior to implementing its Four-Day, Full-Day plan, the District allowed parents to revisit their choice between in-person and remote instruction, 57 percent chose in-person attendance. Under the Full-Day, Four-Day plan, the traditional daily schedule is followed from Tuesday through Friday. Mondays remain remote learning days for all students. This transition will prepare the District to fully reopen five days a week to start the 2021-2022 school year.
IN-PERSON NEED-TO-KNOW INFO Students attending school in person receive a full day of in-person instruction four days a week. Students are with the same classmates and mostly remain in the same classroom throughout the day. Buses transport students to and from school, with no more than 50 students on any bus. Lunch is served on site, and -- at the end of the day -- students are sent home with grab-and-go breakfasts to eat before coming to school the next morning. Social distancing measures -- though slightly reduced -- remain in place. Students and staff are still required to wear face coverings while indoors, and must continue to self-certify their health before entering the building each morning.
REMOTE NEED-TO-KNOW INFO Lunch periods and schedules for elementary specials and middle school Encore classes shifted, but most of the school day remained unchanged for students who opted to continue remote instruction.
FINANCIAL RELIEF
District 2 will not collect registration fees for the 2021-2022 school year. The BSD2 Board of Education voted to eliminate the registration fees for the coming year to provide financial relief for its families, many of which have faced economic hardships throughout the pandemic. Most districts charge registration fees, often $100 or more. For many years, District 2’s registration fees were $40 for elementary students and $44 for middle school students. (Middle school students will still be charged fees for agendas, lanyards, IDs, gym suits, and calculators.) The District historically collects about $30,000 in registration fees. However, it also grants fee waivers to students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals, which amount to about 50 percent of the District’s student population. For the past seven years, the District has also provided classroom supplies for all students at an annual cost of about $80,000 to the District. It will continue to do so for the 2021-2022 school year.

NOURISHING OUR NEIGHBORS
District 2 and Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry work together to feed families. Their partnership formed seven years ago, when the two began working together to make monthly Food for Families mobile pantries available at local schools. District 2 shared leftover food from these events with the pantry, and provided the pantry a box truck to use to pick up food donations, and the Pantry filled in and provided food for these events in rare instances when the Northern Illinois Food Bank was unable to do so. Both entities promoted each other’s efforts to their clients, making certain more families in need were aware of local resources and services available to them.
The grants have also allowed the Pantry to redesign its website, bwdfp.org, and begin using it to collect Paypal donations. “We have really been able to come together to do some meaningful work,” said Schwarz. “We’ve definitely developed synergy.”
Since the start of Food for Families, District 2 has also stepped into leadership roles within the Pantry’s organizational structure. Dr. Jim Stelter, BSD2 Superintendent of Schools, has served as its president; Lara Schwarz, BSD2 Community Liaison, as its vice president; and Paul Novack, BSD2 Chief Financial Officer, as its treasurer. In partnership with the Pantry’s longtime, dedicated volunteers, they led the Pantry to become a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. This allowed the pantry to secure more than $75,000 in grants it wouldn’t have qualified for when it was solely a branch of Faith Community United Church of Christ. Those grants have allowed the Pantry to purchase a walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler, which, in turn, has allowed the Pantry to expand its offerings to its clients.
