VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE THE 2020 CENSUS IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER! What is the Census? As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is a once-every-decade count of everyone living in the United States and its territories. Beginning in March 2020, you will be asked to count the number of people living in your home as of April 1, as well as the age and sex of each person.

Why Should I Care About the Census? There are numerous reasons as to why everyone, should make sure that they respond to the questionnaire. Responding to the 2020 Census is a chance to shape your future. Your responses inform where over $675 billion is distributed each year to communities nationwide for clinics, schools, libraries, roads, and more. Census data also provides community leaders with vital information to make decisions about building community centers, opening businesses, and planning for the future. The census also impacts our representation. Responses are used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats Illinois has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

When Can I Respond to the Census? In early 2020, every household in America will receive a notice to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. In May, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin following up in person with households that have yet to respond.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

PEOPLE’S RESOURCE CENTER Since 1975, People’s Resource Center (PRC) has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County. Nearly 30,000 DuPage residents rely on PRC for help each year. With a team of over 2,600 volunteers, we offer nutritious food and other basic necessities like clothes and rent assistance for people facing tough times. We also connect people with resources— education and tutoring, jobs, technology, art, a caring community—to create a future of hope and opportunity for all. PRC is able to provide these services because of the generosity and support from our neighbors. More than 2,600 volunteers work with our small staff offering time, skills and resources to help their neighbors. Donors contribute food, clothing, books, computers, and money to support our work. The majority of our support comes from caring neighbors right here in DuPage County. For more information about People’s Resource Center, including additional services offered and volunteer opportunities, visit peoplesrc.org or call 630.682.5402. PRC currently has two locations, in Wheaton at 201 S. Naperville Road, and in Westmont at 104 Chestnut Avenue. CP RAIL HOLIDAY TRAIN VISITS BENSENVILLE AND HELPS RAISE OVER $12,000! The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train stopped in Bensenville for its second consecutive visit on Monday, December 2, 2019. This brightly lit, 1,000 foot long train was welcomed by hundreds of spectators as it pulled into Bensenville at the corner of York Road and Railroad Avenue Monday afternoon. Over $22,000 and thousands of pounds of food has been donated to the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry over the last two years in conjunction with this event. The CP Rail Holiday Train serves as a way to bring awareness to local hunger issues and encourages attendees to bring non-perishable food items to benefit the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry. The highlight of the event featured a live musical performance from Meghan Patrick and Kelly Prescott from a modified, holiday-themed boxcar. Representatives from CP Rail presented a $10,000 check to Village President Frank DeSimone who accepted on behalf of the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry. This is the second consecutive year that CP Rail has presented a $10,000 check to the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry. The Bensenville business community also supported the event by attending and helping raise donations. This included donations from Chase Bank, the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce, Route 83 McDonalds in Bensenville, Bella Vista Banquets, and Grand Subaru of Bensenville which made a $2,000 donation and filled a van full of food. Bensenville School District 2 also held a food drive leading up to the event which resulted in over 800 pounds of food being donated to the Food Pantry. “This is a great example of how our community comes together to support one another and it is truly a humbling experience. Thank you to the many volunteers at the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry who dedicate countless hours of their time each year. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and we thank you for your contributions to our community,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

TIPS TO AVOID FROZEN PIPES Once temperatures start dropping outside, it’s important to take steps to keep your pipes warm and your water running. Below are a few helpful tips to keep in mind this winter. • Keep your garage door closed as much as possible. • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach your pipes. This is especially important if your pipes run along the exterior walls of your home. • Let water drip from a faucet. Doing this helps prevent your pipes from freezing.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night. • If you plan to be away from your home for an extended period of time, be sure to set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees. • For a long term solution, you can also add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

One of the belief statements in our strategic plan is Fenton prepares students to fulfill their civic responsibilities. One aspect of civic responsibility is giving back to our communities. In October the Village of Bensenville gave a prestigious volunteer award to Fenton senior Victor Aristakessian, who is the first student to receive the honor. He volunteered much of his time to helping local organizations and facilitate school events. Victor so far has volunteered over 265 hours. He is one of 1,500 Bison who will clock in hundreds of hours this school year. In total, Fenton students volunteered 22,412 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic year alone. Around the same time at Victor’s award, our volleyball teams concluded their Volley For The Cure fundraiser, which sent $1,020 to the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation in Chicago. Similarly, 52 units of blood was collected during the Student Council’s Fall Blood Drive on November 14. The juniors in Student Council collected used shoes to send to developing countries for local entrepreneurs to sell and raise themselves out of poverty. These are only a few examples of the great efforts Fenton students, families and staff put forth in giving back to our amazing communities. Yes, Fenton has a graduation requirement of 25 hours of community service. Yes, our National Honor Society has its own community service requirements. Yes, certain clubs require their members to come up with fundraisers. The goal is to reach a point where you choose to give your time or talent or resources without being required. The goal is to also help you find and get involved with issues you are passionate about.

right thing to do. It is the Bison Way. Nobody should go hungry. Nobody should go cold or homeless. Sometimes people give their time, talent or resources to causes they relate to, as a way to prevent a harmful issue that happened to them or to preserve a helpful resource they once benefited from. The latter is true for me and my family. Growing up in the south side of Chicago, my family needed assistance from food pantries and clothing drives. In many instances, people who live near each other work together to solve a problem that is affecting all of them, like cleaning a park, assisting a family whose house burned, or assisting families who lack food and clothing. This is evident at Fenton.

Why should someone choose to give? In most cases, because it’s the

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS RECEIVE HIGH HONORS Several members of the District 100 Board of Education received honors from the Illinois Association of School Boards this past November. All seven members were collectively given School Board Governance Recognition. Board members Patty Jalowiec, Mary Ann Payton-Howell, and Juliet Rago were recognized separately for achieving Master Board Member Level 1 distinctions for their various roles. School Board President Paul Wedemann, Fenton’s longest tenured board member, was named a DuPage Division Director At Large and will serve on a panel with other elected school board members from throughout the county.

congrats!

“It’s an honor to be chosen for these distinctions,” President Wedemann said. “It shows that Fenton High School is in good hands and we have a track record of making responsible decisions.” Superintendent James Ongtengco said all seven board members go above and beyond in their duties. “Our board is working hard, constantly learning, and staying engaged with our school,” Ongtengco said. “We thank them for their commitment and passion.”

INTERNET ACCESS AT HOME IS REQUIRED FOR E-LEARNING As you are aware by now, District 100’s Board of Education approved the use of E-Learning days for emergency situations in which Fenton’s campus needs to remain closed. On those days, students will be required to log into Google classroom from home and participate in lessons uploaded by your teachers. Fenton has a few options for families that do not have reliable internet at home or don’t have internet at all.

Comcast Internet Essentials: www.internetessentials.com Access from AT&T: www.att.com/shop/internet/access Fenton will provide a limited number of WiFi hotspots available to students who don’t have internet at home. These small wireless devices will allow student Chromebooks to connect to the internet, but they are intended only for educational purposes. There will be no cost to the student. If you would like more information or are interested in obtaining a WiFi hotspot from Fenton, please send an email to communications@fenton100.org.

Some families could qualify for regular internet service from AT&T or Comcast at discounted prices as low as $5 per month — based on financial need. To learn more visit following websites.

FENTON THEATER DEPARTMENT PERFORMS DANCING AT LUGHNASA, PREPARES FOR SISTER ACT A larger than normal cast was on stage in late October to perform Dancing at Lughnasa, a memory play about five unmarried sisters from a small village in Ireland in 1936 during the time of the Festival of Lughnasa. The festival was organized every year to mark the beginning of harvest, and the characters each navigated their own perils while finding ways to laugh and support each other. Director Mike Mitchell noted the play featured fractured, imperfect memories of highly impactful moments – which were all told by the main character and relived by the subsequent cast. 8

THREE DISTRICTS BUILD PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE The jointly-created Portrait of a Graduate is nearly complete. The developed theme centers around Empowered to be the best me I can be with six descriptive words below depicting desired means of empowerment. The concept was created by a team of about 45 people from Wood Dale School District 7, Bensenville School District 2, and Fenton Community High School District 100 following months of public polling. The group contained students, educators and community members. The three school boards are each expected to approve a final version of the design in March. SURVEY SAYS!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL? TELL US IN THE ILLINOIS 5ESSENTIALS SURVEY! Bensenville School District 2 is once again administering the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey provides students, teachers, and parents a voice in our ongoing efforts to improve our schools. But it is also an opportunity for you to tell us what you love about your child’s school! That, too, is an increasingly important part of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey because its results reflect what we as a community value about our schools. From state report cards to real estate rating websites, its results are often used to paint a picture of you, your family, and your neighborhood. So parents, please visit illinois.5-essentials.org by Friday, February 14, and complete the 10-minute parent survey. Tell us what you think and how we can improve, and share with the world what makes you proud to be part of our BSD2 family!

To register, contact Arcelia Garay at 630.766.2602 ext. 4355 or agaray@bsd2.org.

Bensenville Fire Protection District ISO Class 2 500 South York Road Bensenville | Illinois 60106 www.bensenvillefpd.org Chief Michael Spain Phone 630 594 1184 Cell 708 935 7198 Services CPR Child Safety Seat Checks Professional Fire Academy Citizens Fire Academy Safety Seminars www.bensenvillefpd.org

BENSENVILLE FPD IS AWARDED ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT The Bensenville Fire Protection District #2 is excited to announce our award and acceptance of an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $55,650.00. The Grant was awarded for the purchase of new structural firefighting gear. The grant comes with a stipulation of the recipient matching at 10% of the total award or a total of $5,059.10. The purpose of the AFG is to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel. With this award, the District will purchase 21 new sets of structural firefighting gear. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends the replacement of structural firefighting gear no longer than every 10 years. The standard or structural firefighting gear is updated approximately every 5 years. Most of the structural firefighting gear presently in service for district personnel is between 7 and 10 years old. This grant will allow the district to maintain compliance with the NFPA recommendation, safety for the firefighters and ultimately the safety of the residents of the district while maintaining fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of the district.

BENSENVILLE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT PROVIDING SMOKE ALARMS AND FIRE PREVENTION EDUCATION THROUGH BE ALARMED! PROGRAM Bensenville, IL – The Bensenville Fire Protection District is working cooperatively with the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance and Office of the State Fire Marshal to provide no-cost smoke alarms to residents of Bensenville. The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation program provides smoke alarms and fire prevention materials to Illinois fire departments in an effort to both educate residents on fire safety as well as to provide them with life-saving devices in their home. The program was developed to educate residents on the dangers of fire, how to prevent fire from occurring in the home, and to ensure there are working smoke alarms properly installed in homes. By utilizing 10-year concealed battery smoke alarms, it ensures that the power source cannot be removed from the unit and, if properly maintained, will last the life of the device. Smoke alarms are the most effective early warning device there is. By merely having a working smoke alarm in your home, it reduces your chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Our goal is to make sure residents have the protection of a smoke alarm. Because smoke alarms alone won’t prevent every fire death our program includes educating residents on how to create a home fire escape plan, so they know what to do if their smoke alarm sounds. Residents who wish to receive more information about the Bensenville Fire Protection District’s smoke alarm installation program should contact the department at (630) 350-3441,via email at wfry@bensenvillefpd.org, or register online at www.bensenvillefpd.org
