The Fenton Community was saddened by the loss of our Board President, Mr. Oronzo Peconio, in January. Oronzo was not only a warm and caring human being, he was a fine board member and leader. He was a Bison through and through and bled Orange and Blue. Oronzo was ubiquitous: he was at the athletic and club events, Special Olympics, Padres Unidos, Przyjaciele FHS, music events and band concerts, Parent Teacher Conferences, first day of school, Food for Families, etc. Oronzo was a friend, and a friend to our school and students at Fenton. We join in celebrating his life, and a spirit that will live on.
Thank you Oronzo Peconio, you will be missed.
To receive your complimentary Think Green t-shirt, you must register at the Deer Grove Leisure Center by 12pm, April 14. At registration, please choose your worksite location. Worksite locations and more information is available on the Special Events page at bensenvilleparkdistrict.org.

Fenton District 100 is pleased to announce Leanna Belcher has been named as a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of Commendation from Jovan Lazarevic, Principal, was presented to this scholastically talented senior. “Leanna is involved in National Honor Society and is very involved in her church, and already has college credits as she finishes senior year,” says counselor Nancy Connor. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent nationally of those tested. “Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for the NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

If you miss a message and need to replay the message received, you can dial this number and listen to the message again in its entirety. To sign up for the CodeRED system, go to the Village Website Home Page and click the CodeRed Alert System icon. The highlighted link will take you to the enrollment form, be sure to scroll through the entire form. You will need to click on the Terms and Conditions box, then click the Verify Information button to review your information before submitting everything to CodeRED. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Brush may be placed on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week, but no later than 7am on the first Monday of each month. Each street receives a single collection during a scheduled week; placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no pickup. REPUBLIC SERVICES collects from April through November: individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point. Place in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached. Yard Waste Only Stickers can be picked up for free at Village Hall. Republic Services collects these branches with other residential yard waste. To discard root balls, break them up into small enough pieces to fit into your trash container for Republic Services to collect.

Metropolitan Family Services, which contributed about $1 million toward construction of the Early Childhood Center, operates the federally funded Head Start program, and the program’s participants must meet income eligibility requirements. Qualifying students ages 3-5 will be served by the regular Head Start program, while the Early Head Start program will serve qualifying students ages birth-3. The program’s opening had been held up several months, first due to minor construction setbacks that occurred this summer, then because of lengthy delays in the approval of background checks that were newly required by the FBI for all individuals working in early childhood classrooms. During this delay, the Head Start program continued to conduct regular home visits with the families who enrolled in their classes, and even held a number of family-oriented open house activities in the new space. Now Metropolitan’s staff can meet with their students on a daily basis, as Head Start is now the first year-round instructional program offered in District 2. For enrollment information, call 630.392.9371.
GET REGISTERED
District 2 sets registration dates for kindergartners, returning students. Bensenville School District 2 will hold kindergarten registration on March 13, and will open online registration for returning students on April 6. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Kindergarten registration will be held from 3-7 pm on Tuesday, March 13, at Tioga School, 212 W. Memorial Road, and W.A. Johnson School, 252 Ridgewood Avenue.
ONLINE REGISTRATION Login information and detailed instructions for the BSD2 online registration portal will be sent home with returning students in backpack mail on April 6.
All incoming kindergarten students will need to register at their home school. If you are unsure which school your child will attend, please call the Educational Administration Center at 630.766.5940. Please bring your child with you to kindergarten registration so that they can be assessed for kindergarten.
The online registration portal can be found on the District 2 website, www.bsd2.org, along with resources to assist you and answer any questions you may have. If you don’t have access to a computer or the Internet, contact your child’s school to learn about on-site, in-person online registration opportunities. Computers at the Bensenville Community Public Library also offer free Internet access, and students’ take-home Chromebooks (Grades 6-8) can access the online registration portal wherever you find wireless Internet (Wi-Fi).
Registration requirements are as follows: • Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2018 • A certified copy of an original birth certificate • Proof of Residency — current photo identification, lease/mortgage, and three additional proofs of residency are required. BE NSE NVIL L E

PLAN OF ACTION
It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and STEM-focused instruction is blossoming at Blackhawk.
The BSD2 community will update the District’s three-year strategic plan this spring.
Blackhawk Middle School provides students with opportunities to learn STEM concepts and skills through discovery, exploration, collaboration, and playful learning in a low-risk/high-reward environment. The school’s STEM curriculum is designed to afford students opportunities to apply their learning and use their creativity to solve problems through inquiry-based activities, and to spark students’ interest and foster their curiosity through the use of computational thinking practices, engineering design processes, and problem-based learning units. The school’s STEM programs include … • Applied Robotics Class | All BMS students rotate into this ENCORE class, which uses LEGO Mindstorms’ EV3 Robotics to expose students to basic computer programming principles and teach them related math concepts such as unit rates, proportions, rotational values, sequencing of commands, looping, and decision blocks. • STEM Lab Class | All BMS students rotate into this ENCORE class, too. It introduces them to engineering and design concepts and challenges their critical thinking and problem-solving skills through a wide variety of hands-on activities that incorporate everything from circuit boards to Makey Makey kits, K’Nex construction systems, Zoob building sets, recycled household items, and more. • Coding | Both of the aforementioned ENCORE classes also introduce students to coding. By the time students complete eighth grade, they will have gained several weeks of coding experience using the Scratch, Hour of Code, and EV3 programming languages.
• Underwater Robotics Club | Sponsored by Shedd Aquarium and Motorola, students in this club create a remotely operated aquatic vehicle that can successfully navigate an underwater challenge course.

• zSpace | Purchased with Race to the Top grant funds, this exciting and expensive virtual reality learning program provides unique, 3D learning experiences that supplement the STEM Lab’s hands-on activities, as well as topics students study in other courses, such as math, science, and art.

Also, in preparation for those workshops, the District is conducting a short online survey of its various stakeholders. BSD2 community members can access the survey through the District’s website, and have through Monday, March 30, to complete it. To learn more about the BSD2 Strategic Plan, visit www.bsd2.org.
• Passion and Innovation Time (PIT) | Similar to the popular Genius Hour concept, PIT will provide all students an hour per day during the year’s final ENCORE rotation to take ownership of their learning and pursue their individual passions by developing their own projects related to their own interests.
A
In April and May, the District will conduct four strategic planning workshops led by an experienced outside facilitator. Teachers, staff members, parents, and community members are invited to participate in those workshops, which will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays: April 25, May 2, May 9, and May 16. The workshops will be held at W.A. Johnson School and will run from 6-9 pm.
