MARCH/APRIL 2017

FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL FENTON HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NAMED EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR Associate Superintendent/Principal James Ongtengco has been named the 2017 Educator of the Year by The Construction Industry Service Corporation (CISCO). Mr. Ongtengco was honored at CISCO’s annual meeting on January 27. In the spring of 2016, Fenton High School and CISCO partnered to host a Journeyman Trades Fair. Students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and speak to people who work in the trades. This year’s fair is scheduled for April 20.

CISCO Executive Director Dan Allen, Associate Superintendent/Principal James Ongtengco, Board of Education President Mary Ribando, Board of Education Secretary Laura Wassinger, Board of Education member Susan Ralph and Interim Superintendent Gayle Wahlin.

Mr. Ongtengco firmly believes that Fenton High School must prepare all students for post-secondary life. “While many of our students choose to attend a two or four-year educational institution, we also know that a good number of our students leave Fenton and go right to work. It is imperative that we partner with organizations like CISCO as a means to educate and prepare students for occupational opportunities they can pursue upon graduation.”

Board of Education President Mary Ribando says the Board is proud that James and the school have been recognized for providing opportunities for students. “The mission of Fenton High School is to educate and inspire our students to reach their potential as responsible productive citizens, and we feel that James and his staff continue to work hard to make that a reality for all students.”

SANITARY SEWER CLEANING AND TELEVISING PROGRAM The Department of Public Works will be cleaning and televising the sanitary sewer system throughout the Village. This process is an ongoing effort to keep our sewer system free and clear of debris; including sediment, grease, scale build-up and in most cases tree roots that have infiltrated through joints or cracks in the pipe walls. By keeping the sewers clean, we reduce the chances of sewers backing up into private service lines that could result in sewage backing up into basements. Televising our sewers allows the Village to inspect and identify any defects or concerns in our system. Performing these activities in tandem creates the opportunity for the Village to maximize efficiencies and assure quality of our cleaning operation. The cleaning component of the program consists of Village crews utilizing a pressurized water jet and vacuum system. This large and powerful piece of equipment sprays highly pressured water through a series of nozzles aimed at scouring the inside of the pipes. In heavy root situations, additional root cutting blades clear the pipe. Debris generated by this process is flushed into the downstream manhole and collected through a suction hose.

BUILDING PERMIT REMINDER Spring is just around the corner, and with good weather comes the opportunity for many home improvement projects. You need to obtain building permits for many home improvements. If you have any questions come into Village Hall or call 630.350.3413. We look forward to working with you and making this process as easy as possible.

During the cleaning process, sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum. Usually any excess air pressure or vacuum will dissipate through the plumbing vents, but occasionally there are facilities with inadequate plumbing vents (i.e no vents, undersized vents or obstructed vents). In these situations, air pressure could escape through the toilet, floor drains, sink, tub or shower drains causing water to splash out. Vacuums can also develop that could draw the water out of the fixture traps causing an unpleasant odor. This is called blow back. What can I do to prevent blow back into my home during the cleaning process? We have found that the best way to minimize blow back is to cover all floor drains with plastic and place a weight on the plastic, cover all toilets with plastic and place the lid on the plastic, and for odor, run water into each drain to fill the traps. The actual cleaning process from manhole to manhole does not take long although you may see equipment in the area for extended periods of time due to the equipment set up and tear down. The cleaning that will affect your homes should not take longer than a few hours. What to do if you experience blow back? Recovery from a blow back event is simply a matter of removing any debris and the cleaning of the floors, toilets, sinks, baths, or showers that may have been impacted. You may continue normal use. Sewage blow back events that involve only the discharge of water to walls or surfaces do not result in an immediate health risk. However, it is important that any sewage contaminated water, any resulting debris and surfaces that have come in contact with this water be promptly and thoroughly cleaned. This will require the removal of any debris, the cleaning of the surfaces with a soap solution and the disinfection of hard surfaces with a diluted household bleach/water solution. Regular household cleaning products are all that are needed. We recommend the use of rubber gloves. Never mix ammonia and chlorine products such as household bleach.

Investing in Illinois: A Nicor Gas System Improvement Initiative is a multi-year initiative to modernize aging natural gas infrastructure. Nicor Gas, with its contractor KS Energy, will be modernizing the system that delivers natural gas safely and reliably to your neighborhood and we want to keep you informed of our work. Many residents throughout the Village have already been contacted by Nicor of this project via a mailer sent to the home. The Village of Bensenville is aware and supportive of this project that brings upgraded infrastructure and a more reliable system to our residents. Staff is working closely with Nicor to assure a safe, productive, and clean project for our residents. The project will consist of replacing gas mains, gas services, and selected gas meters throughout the Village. Different phases of this project will include the following:

Phase I | Visual Inspection of the Equipment Approximately two weeks before we replace the line that delivers natural gas to your home or business, a Nicor Gas employee or contractor will visually inspect the natural gas meter and natural gas line on your property. There will be no interruption to your natural gas service during this inspection.

Phase III | Replace Existing Natural Gas Line

Enhancements

A new natural gas line to your home or business will be installed. This will connect your property to the natural gas main in your neighborhood. W.A. JOHNSON SCHOOL’S SERVICE CLUB BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER Johnson’s 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Service Club members have worked hard this fall to bring our community together. We have worked as a school community to jump start our anti-bullying campaign to promote Kindness Matters! In December Service Club also created beautiful holiday ornaments for our W.A. Johnson Service Club tree to help decorate Bensenville’s Time Square. To reach out to our Bensenville community, the students created door decorations to give to our friends at Bridgeway and met with a wonderful Bridgeway liaison to learn more about how students can get involved. This spring a new group of students will be able to continue working with the community to learn more about Bensenville and do wonderful service projects.

W.A. JOHNSON STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL ACT AS STUDENT LEADERS AND LIAISONS Student Advisory Council at W. A. Johnson Elementary School has been extremely busy this year acting both as student leaders and liaisons between the students, teachers and administration, including Dr. Stelter, our Superintendent. From working as Morning Helpers in the hallways each morning to sharing their ideas for school improvements during pizza lunches with Dr. Stelter, this group of students has really shown their true leadership potential. The rest of the school year calls for even more volunteering at school events and assemblies, hosting fundraising efforts throughout the school, such as collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, and interviewing representatives from each grade level to learn what other students believe are the best parts of our school. Student Advisory Council members are excited to continue their great work!

Each year, Tioga’s Love of Literacy (LOL) Committee organizes a very special author visit for our students. This year, on January 26, 2017, author Candace Fleming visited Tioga. For months leading up to the visit, students in every grade read books written by Ms. Fleming, voted on their favorite book, and created projects related to one of the books. Our LOL Committee was able to gather the funds to purchase a book for EVERY Tioga student and have it autographed by Ms. Fleming. The students were excited to meet Candace Fleming and to take home their very own books. Learn more about Ms. Fleming and her books at www.candacefleming.com.

& Home Fire Safety

Chief Michael Spain Phone 630 594 1184 Cell 708 935 7198 Services CPR Child Safety Seat Checks Professional Fire Academy Citizens Fire Academy Safety Seminars

The place where we feel safest — at home — is where most smoking-materials structure fires, deaths, and injuries occur. Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths. Smoking material fires are preventable.

Be Alert! • To prevent a deadly cigarette fire, you must be alert. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs that make you drowsy or have consumed alcohol. • Never smoke in bed.

• !

FACTS The risk of dying in a home structure fire caused by smoking materials rises with age.

• !

Smoking and Medical Oxygen

One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

Never smoke and never allow anyone to smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and make fires burn at a faster rate than normal. It can make an existing fire burn faster and hotter. www.nfpa.org/education Your Source for SAFETY Information | NFPA Public Education Division • 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02169
