MEDICAL EXAMS & IMMUNIZATIONS For the purpose of safeguarding the health of children, District 2 enforces Illinois health requirements that consist of health, dental, and eye exams, and immunizations specific to grade and age. In particular, physical examinations are required for all children entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and sixth grade, and those who are new to the school. Parents – please submit these required medical exam and immunization records for your child before school starts! Students who do not provide the required immunization and/or exam records will be excluded from school according to District policy and Illinois School Code. It is not awarded every year, but this year was given to Mr. Gaudio at the BSD2 Board’s May 15 meeting during a surprise ceremony before an auditorium packed with many of his admiring colleagues. Mr. Gaudio joined District 2 in 1980, and taught at Chippewa, Tioga, and Blackhawk schools before retiring in 2015. However, he never really retired. Mr. Gaudio continues to serve District 2 (this year at W.A. Johnson School) by providing part-time support for students in the District’s English Learners program, sponsoring after-school clubs, and volunteering at school and community activities. Congratulations, Mr. Gaudio, and thank you for your dedication to Bensenville School District 2!

CONGRATS … AND BEST WISHES! District 2 welcomed two new members to its Board of Education, and thanked two departing members for their service. Voters sent two incumbents and two newcomers to the Bensenville School District 2 Board of Education following the April 2 General Election.

Chris McCullough and James Stoltman were elected to their first four-year terms on the Board. Mr. McCullough is an associate professor in the Education Department at Rockford University, and Mr. Stoltman works in the IT department at Elgin Community College. Additionally, Bob Laudadio and Katie Krajecki were re-elected to the Board and chosen to serve as president and vice president, respectively, when the newly elected members were seated during a special May 2 reorganizational meeting.

During that meeting, the District also thanked departing board members Matthew Vassar, who served four years, and Jorge Sanchez, who served 11 years, for their service to District 2.

WALK-IN REGISTRATION Registration for students who will attend BSD2 schools in the 2019-20 school year but are not yet registered will be Thursday, August 1, from 2-6 pm at all District 2 schools. Parents who are not certain which school their child will attend may call 630.766.5940 ext. 1108 or 1114. Children must be 5 years old by September 1, 2019, to register for the 2019-20 school year. Parents registering children for the first time with District 2 must bring: • • • •

Transfer slips from the previous school they attended (if applicable) Certified copies of the original birth certificates for each child being registered Proof of residency Up-to-date physical, dental, vision, and immunization records

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY HELD FOR VILLAGE TRUSTEES On May 14, 2019, DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin administered the oath of office for Nicholas Panicola, Jr., Rosa Carmona, and Marie T. Frey as Village of Bensenville Trustees where they will each serve a four year term. Rosa Carmona has served as a Village Trustee since 2015 and Nicholas Panicola, Jr. was appointed by Village President Frank DeSimone in 2017. Marie T. Frey was newly elected to replace Annie Jaworska who did not rerun in the April 2019 election. Marie T. Frey has been a resident for nearly 40 years in the Bensenville-Wood Dale area. She has been active in volunteering at Village sponsored senior events including the monthly Senior Luncheon. In October of 2018, Marie was presented with the Breiter-Cuvala Volunteer of the Year Award that recognized her spirit of volunteerism in the community.

GARDEN CLUB OF BENSENVILLE CELEBRATES 70 YEARS AS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION On Thursday, May 9, 2019 the Garden Club of Bensenville gathered for their annual meeting to celebrate 70 years as an organization. The Garden Club of Bensenville, the oldest civic group in the Village, held their first meeting on May 12, 1949 where late founder and first president, Barbara Groves Linden was elected. She had a vision for the women of Bensenville to serve their community through beautification and preservation. As part of the celebration, Bensenville Village Manager Evan K. Summers presented a letter of recognition on behalf of Village President Frank DeSimone to Ellie Leveen who has been a Bensenville Garden Club Member for 60 years. DeSimoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s letter thanked Ellie for her support and efforts towards giving back to the community over the many years as a member of the club. The Garden Club of Bensenville is always looking for additional members to share a good time and discuss gardening. They meet at the Bensenville Community Public Library on the second Thursday of each month at 12:30 pm.

B-RECOGNIZED FOR YOUR RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPING! LANDSCAPE WASTE DISPOSAL & OPEN BURNING RULES IN DUPAGE COUNTY In 1990, the DuPage County Board passed Ordinance OWR-001-90 banning the illegal disposal of landscape waste. WHY? • To maintain acceptable ambient air quality and to protect the health, welfare and safety of DuPage County’s residents. • The open burning of landscape wastes produces particulate matter that may exceed the National Ambient Air Quality survey standard.

What Does Dupage County’s Ordinance Say? It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow any open and uncontrolled burning of landscape wastes at any site in unincorporated DuPage County. It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow the burning of any refuse including landscape waste in any chamber not specifically designed for the purpose and approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency pursuant to regulations adopted by the Illinois Pollution Control Board or specified by this Ordinance. The Village is partnering with the Garden Club of Bensenville to recognize great looking residential properties in the community. VOLUNTEER TO BE A PART OF THE 2020 CENSUS! Census Day is coming up on April 1, 2020 and we’ve formed a Complete Count Committee to promote the upcoming Census to make sure each resident is counted. Getting an accurate count for the Census can help the Village in many ways like identifying proper allocation of funding for education, neighborhood improvements, and much more. REDMOND RESERVOIR EXPANSION PROJECT BENEFITS BENSENVILLE RESIDENTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH HEAVY RAINFALL Last summer, the Village and DuPage County went through an extensive expansion project at Redmond Reservoir which created nearly 6.5 million gallons of additional capacity. Because of high amounts of precipitation at the end of April and beginning of May, this project proved to be successful, saving Bensenville and surrounding areas from extensive water damage to properties. During the weeks of heavy rainfall this spring, the Redmond Reservoir was able to utilize nearly all of its 6.5 million gallons of additional capacity. This project helped reduce the amount of flooded streets, seepage into homes, and flooding in downstream communities. Typically this much rain would have overflowed the reservoir but, with the expansion last summer, there was sufficient capacity to handle the stormwater. The added capacity also allowed the Village to delay its pumping operations, which provide a direct benefit to the downstream areas. Additionally, the recreational uses of the Redmond Park were also intact as almost all the walking paths and basketball courts were still functional.

FALL COMMUNITY YARD SALE SEPTEMBER 12-15 Believe it or not, fall is just around the corner! If you missed the Spring Community Yard Sale, take advantage of the Fall Community Yard Sale taking place the extended weekend of September 12th-15th. To host a yard sale and to be included on a community flyer, you must complete a yard sale application and obtain a FREE permit. If you wish to have your address posted on the community yard sale flyer, please turn in your application by September 6th. DOWNTOWN CONSTRUCTION – MUSIC IN THE PARK MUSIC IN THE PARK | NEW LOCATION BEGINNING JULY 10TH – Due to downtown improvement projects, Music in the Park will be held at the corner of Main Street and Center Street beginning July 10 through August 21. Parking will be available along Railroad Avenue, Addison Street, Center Street, Main Street, Metra commuter lots, and additional side streets that allow parking. MUSIC IN THE PARK COMMUNITY DAY JULY 31ST – A special community focused Music in the Park will take place on Wednesday, July 31st to promote local programs and services. Representatives from the Bensenville Community Public Library, School District 2, School District 100, the Park District, The Bensenville Fire Protection District, and the Village will be present to answer questions and provide helpful information specific to their organization. We encourage you to stop by each booth to ask questions and receive free information and register for giveaways.

VILLAGE CELEBRATES NATIONAL POLICE WEEK To show support for local law enforcement, the Village encouraged residents to display blue lights and/or blue ribbons outside their home to celebrate National Police Week through the Week of Sunday, May 12th. The lobby of the Bensenville Police Department sported blue ribbons and balloons to show their support. The Village thanks all law enforcement for their tireless efforts to keep their community’s safe.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 6TH The Village invites you to come out and celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6th from 5-7 pm at Redmond Park. National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign that promotes strong policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to help make our neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live and work. A brand new High Definition camera system was installed in the Village Board Room this spring. These new cameras will provide a higher quality video for viewing Board Meetings and other events. Additional program adjustments will also make video production easier while also improving the overall quality. HOLIDAY TREE DONATION It’s never too early to start planning for the holiday season in Bensenville! The Village is searching for a tree to be used in Downtown Bensenville’s Holiday Magic Tree Lighting Ceremony. If chosen, your tree will be removed free of charge, with ground manicure provided afterwards by Bensenville Public Works. You are also eligible to be recognized at the Holiday Magic event and have the opportunity to participate in the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 1st. First started in the late 1960’s, the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry has grown from having two elderly pickup trucks to serving over 375 families a month with two box trucks and a van. They are located at 192 S. Center Street which is attached to Faith Community Church. They also utilize on site food trucks and portable pantries several times each month which usually takes place at local schools or churches. The food pantry serves Bensenville, Wood Dale, and Elmhurst families in need and over 10 tons of food is distributed every month. If you would like to volunteer or donate food, please contact the pantry at 630.766.9382 or stop by during their hours of operation. (Blank seed packets are available at the Circulation Desk. Provide the plant information asked on the packet and return to the Library.) If you are unable to save your own seeds, please considering donating a packet or two of fresh, commercially grown, non-hybrid or non-GMO, seeds to keep our library stocked for future gardeners. On Sunday, May 19, Fenton High School held commencement exercises for 361 members of the Class of 2019. The Fenton Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. George, began the ceremony with Pomp and Circumstance and the Fenton Concert Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Williams, performed When Dreams Take Flight and the school song We are Bison Pride written by Doug Orlyk. Fenton Scholar Addresses were delivered by Alice Callejas and Alexis Vargas, Karsen Idelman and Kirby Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Donnell presented gifts on behalf of the Class of 2019 to the school, including benches for the senior courtyard, to allow for more seating for the seniors during lunch. They have also purchased six trash cans to replace current ones, to beautify the school. They are donating to the class of 2023 to give them a head start on fundraising. They will receive $1000. This class will leave behind a legacy of completing 22,412 hours of community service.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by the State of Illinois to students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. This is Fenton’s second year and we were able to recognize talented bilingual and trilingual students. There are two levels of awards. Fenton has 12 students who have been awarded the commendation towards Biliteracy, which recognizes students who demonstrate progress towards proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. This year Fenton had 43 recipients of the Seal of Biliteracy. These are for students who have attained a high level of proficiency in one language in addition to English. One student, Alice Callejas, has attained a high level in Spanish and French languages in addition to English. Congratulations to all on this fantastic accomplishment.

The Distinguished Service Awards recognize those who make a difference in their school communities by helping to promote public education and enhance its programs and services. At Fenton, seven individuals and one team was recognized in the categories of Administrator, Board of Education Member, Community Member, Faculty/Certified Staff Member, Parent, Support Staff Member, and Team. School communicators from 13 states judged the entries against a criteria of excellence, and only those receiving top scores received awards. Fenton nominations receiving Awards of Excellence were Superintendent James Ongtengco, Community Member Eric Treiber & Chicago White Metal Castings, Support Staff Member Mary Timmins, Parent Silvia Acuna, and Fenton Team AP District Honor Roll. Nominations receiving Award of Merit went to Board of Education Member Paul Wedemann, Faculty/Certified Staff Member Matthew Lynch, and Student Stevieanna Pace.

July 4 Marching Band in Bensenville 4th of July Parade

Mr. Tingpalpong was elected April 2019 to serve his 4-year term. Kit lives in Wood Dale with his wife and 3 children. He works as the Financial Services Associate for AAA Auto Club Group. He graduated with a bachelor’s in engineering and business, with an emphasis in Math. He volunteered to teach financial literacy to not-for-profit organizations Habitat for Humanity and Catholic Charities. As an immigrant from Thailand since 1980, he’s held a green card until November 2018 when he was sworn in to be a U.S. citizen. Now Kit is ready to serve the community as District 100 Fenton board-elect. A high appreciation for multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion, as elected officials he owes it to our voters and residents of Bensenville and Wood Dale to highlight the best of our community by strengthening our community with a robust school system. Welcome Mr. Tingpalpong.

FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND The Fenton Community High School Marching Band will perform in the Village of Bensenville’s Independence Day Parade to be held on Thursday, July 4 at 10:00 am. WE NEED AND WANT YOU, the FHS alumni, current band students, and incoming students to participate in this communitywide celebration and join us for this fun and exciting day.

Fenton High School Fieldhouse will be the site for the Mexican Consulate to offer assistance to families for passports, medical and dental, birth certificates, etc. Watch the www.fenton100.org website for details as this event is planned.

In order to be successful, we will be having a pick-up rehearsal on Wednesday, July 3 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. This rehearsal will occur in the Fenton High School band room and will cover music and marching. The parade will take place on Thursday, July 4 with a call time at FHS of 8:45 am and a step off time of around 10:00 am. Meet at Fenton High School prior to the parade to load equipment and head over to the start.

Bensenville Park District is currently taking registrations for their 2019 Summer Camp Program. Parents are able to add before and after care service and pick and choose their camp days each time they register. The Day Camp Program offers children the ability to spend their camp day having fun at the Bensenville Water Park, going on field trips, and socializing with friends while participating in a variety of fun activities. Adventure, Sports and Teen campers will receive an optional free healthy lunch every day provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. FISCHER FARM FAMILY CAMPOUT Bring the family for a campout with hotdogs and s’mores in the evening and a continental breakfast in the morning! You won’t want to miss the fun crafts and stories around the fire. Pre-registration is required at the Deer Grove Leisure Center by Thursday, July 25 at 6 pm. Campers will need a tent, sleeping gear, lawn chairs, bug spray, flashlight, games, toys, additional snacks/beverages, and personal items. Children playing with fire cause hundreds of deaths and injuries each year. Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, typically by playing with matches and lighters, and are most likely to die in them. • Children experience fire interest. They may ask questions such as how hot is fire or show an interest in fire through playing with fire trucks or cooking on a play stove. This is healthy, and it is time to begin educating about fire. • Firestarting happens when children begin to experiment with fire using matches and lighters. Many fires happen when young children are left alone, even for a short period of time, and have access to matches and lighters. Parents must have clear rules and consequences about fire misuse. • Grown-ups can help keep fire out of the hands of children. • Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and sight, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet or container. • Never leave matches or lighters in a bedroom or any place where children may go without supervision. • Teach young children and school-age children to tell a grown-up if they see matches or lighters. Children need to understand that fire is difficult to control, it is fast and can hurt as soon as it touches you. • A child with an interest in fire can lead to fire starting and result in repeated firesetting behavior. • It is important for grown-ups to discourage unsupervised fire starts. • Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate you. • Never assign a young child any tasks that involve the use of a lighter or matches (lighting candles, bringing a lighter to an adult to light a cigarette or the fireplace, etc.) • If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only. • Use only lighters designed with child-resistant features. Remember, child-resistant does not mean child-proof.
