Community Newsletter March/April 2023

Page 7

Dear Fenton Families and valued community partners,

The shortcomings of our 1950s building have been front and center these last two years while we worked together to identify the critical deficiencies and form a plan to both address those vital problems and modernize our school.

As you might already know, funding for that referendum plan was not approved by the voters. However, those vital problems still exist and continue to plague our school.

Mitigating indoor flooding was one major component of our plan. Fenton is moving forward with cash reserves to address the flooding issues. This project will install an underground water storage tank near our stadium to temporarily collect stormwater from the western side of our campus. This project will protect our building from further damage and improve stormwater drainage, which should also make our fields more reliably available in the future.

Below are a few common questions and answers.

What Does This Involve?

A new large underground tank will be built to collect water from several areas of our campus and slowly discharge it into public storm sewer systems.

This includes new, larger underground pipes being added in front of our building, in the back of the building, and around our auditorium to funnel water away from the building. Significant construction will occur in and around our stadium, which will result in the need to make repairs. Instead of replacing our problematic grass field with another problematic grass field, we plan to install artificial turf that will improve the availability of our stadium in the future. Portions of the track also will be damaged and need replacing.

Fenton District 100 is working with the Village of Bensenville and DuPage County to ensure our project meets all stormwater regulations.

How Will This Affect My Student?

A few components of summer school will be moved to a different part of our building while utility lines are replaced or moved. Next school year will still begin on time and the daily bell schedule will remain the same, but outdoor physical education activities will be relocated.

Athletics and extracurricular activities will see the biggest impact. As it stands right now, football, soccer, cross country, marching band, softball, and baseball will have their practices and/or games relocated elsewhere on campus or to an off-site location. We are hard at work talking with our local park districts and nearby schools to make the appropriate arrangements. We are committed to maintaining every single academic and extracurricular program. Nothing will be canceled as a result of our construction.

How Will This Project Be Funded?

Fenton pledged to use at least $10 million in cash reserves (savings account) for a portion of the referendum plan. This project will be funded entirely from that same money we set aside and will not result in any additional tax increase.

What’s the Project Timeline?

• January to February: Project Design

• March to May: Acquire Permits from Village and County regulators

• June to January: Construction

FENTON SCHOOL BOARD GOOD GOVERNANCE AWARD

Our Fenton Board of Education deserves a huge shout out for being one of only 33 school boards in all of Illinois to earn the 2022 School Board Governance Recognition. This is presented by the Illinois Association of School Boards, which is an association of peers established in December 1913 to help guide school boards in fulfilling their duties to taxpayers.

President Kit Tingpalpong, Vice President Juliet Rago, Secretary Leo Figueroa, board members Sylvia Hayde, Cary Lewis, John Radzinski, and former board member Patty Jalowiec all work extremely hard to make important decisions for our school. We have a great school thanks to their many contributions and difficult discussions over the years. Congratulations!

FENTON MUSIC STUDENT PERFORMS IN ILMEA HONORS CHOIR

Congratulations to senior Aiden Torres for being selected to the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All-State Honors Choir! This is the top choral ensemble that took center stage at the statewide festival in January.

Earlier this school year Aiden was among several Fenton students who were selected for the ILMEA District 1 Festival, and his same audition was then advanced to the state level where he was chosen from a large pool of applicants from across Illinois.

Congratulations to Aiden, his family, and Choir Director Seredy Williams for all the hard work!

SPRING MUSICAL: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

It’s a fun high-energy show that never takes itself too seriously and provides our students with great opportunities to show off their acting, singing and dancing skills.

Show dates are scheduled for April 20, 21 and 22. Senior Citizens are invited to a free seniors matinee show at 1 pm on April 22. Seniors can reserve a spot at the senior matinee by call 630.860.8620.

As the show dates approach, please check the Fenton website (www.fenton100.org) for updates.

SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 D2 has the best teachers!

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

District 2 teacher honored in the 2023 ISBE Those Who Excel awards program

Carla Vazquez, a dual language first-grade teacher at W.A. Johnson School, recently received Special Recognition in the Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel awards program.

Mrs. Vazquez began her teaching career at Johnson 10 years ago, working as a bilingual first-grade teacher until this year, when her class transitioned into the District’s new dual-language program. After a surprise in-class award presentation, and a congratulatory class hug, school and District administrators shared their thoughts on why Mrs. Vazquez is so deserving of this honor.

“Carla teaches with her whole heart,” said Johnson Principal Carlos Patiño. “She is 100 percent invested in every single student in her classroom. Not only is her instruction of the highest level, but her connection to the students and their families is also second to none. Carla is an asset to our BSD2 community!”

Edgar Palacios, Director of Multilingual Programs and English Learners, echoed Mr. Patiño’s sentiments.

“In addition, she has helped build a dual language program that brings about cultural and linguistic changes to our BSD2 community,” said Mr. Palacios. “She embodies the spirit of our motto, ‘Learning and Growing Together.’”

OLD SCHOOL

Historic display at Tioga hits close to home for its creator

Wander around Tioga School, and you’ll find architectural elements salvaged from the old Tioga and Chippewa Schools scattered around the building. Ornate stone work from those razed facilities can be found in the new school’s cafeteria, near entrances to its gymnasium and preschool, and by its KaBoom playground. An old banister was even brought over and installed as a handrail in the main hallway.

Now, three bricks from the old Tioga building – and dozens of historic photos of the two old schools – are also on display in Tioga’s foyer, courtesy of Carolyn Smith. “I just thought a lot of our parents now probably have no idea any of this existed,” said Carolyn, who joined District 2 in 2016, and now serves as a kindergarten aide at Tioga.

Long before joining Tioga’s staff, Carolyn actually raised her family right across the street from the school. Longtime Bensenville residents may remember the beloved little store on the corner. Carolyn lived in the red brick home next door, and sent each of her three children – now in their 20s and 30s – to Chippewa and Tioga. From 2011 to 2014, they all watched out the front window as those buildings were bulldozed and the new school constructed on the very same grounds. “Somehow those bricks magically appeared in my yard,” laughed Carolyn, who actually asked her kids to sneak across the street and bring them home as souvenirs.

Earlier this year, Carolyn noticed an empty display case near the school’s main entrance, and those three old bricks and a ton of fond family memories came to mind. With the administration’s blessing, she filled that space with this historic display comprised largely of old photos of Tioga and Chippewa Schools posted to the Remembering Bensenville in Photos Facebook Page.

Carolyn titled the display Tioga School: Our roots continue to grow young minds, and she placed those bricks at the bottom of the case as a fun finishing touch, and an addition to the other artifacts found in and around Tioga today. “I am so happy that a little bit of BSD2 history can live on to share with future generations,” Carolyn said.

5ESSENTIALS

Annual survey allows students, parents and teachers to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions

Have you ever checked the weather forecast before leaving home in the morning, glanced at your car’s fuel gauge before backing out of the driveway, or read the nutrition panel on your cereal box while eating breakfast?

“If you did any of these things, you collected data – data to help you prepare for your day, make good decisions for your health, and avoid costly delays,” said Carmen Ayala, Illinois State Superintendent, in her January 18 weekly message. “Those are the same types of benefits school administrators can receive through our annual school climate survey, the data collection known as the 5Essentials.”

Every year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to stakeholders across the District to collect data to help it improve teaching and learning by improving the culture and climate in its schools and classrooms. The 5Essentials survey window opened Tuesday, January 24, and responses from students, teachers, and parents will be collected through Friday, March 31. Students in Grades 4-8 will take the survey in class. Parents and teachers are invited to complete the survey by visiting survey.5-essentials.org/illinois.
