Visit times will be arranged by the park district a week prior to the event. Sign up early as space is very limited. Come join us as we make and decorate two jars that you can either give as gifts or keep for yourself. BSD2 schools celebrated students’ Hispanic Heritage in a variety of ways. Hispanic Heritage Month was September 15 through October 15, and the monthlong celebration took shape in a variety of ways throughout BSD2 schools.

BLACKHAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, BMS students took over the morning announcements on Tuesdays and Fridays, and shared stories about significant Hispanic figures and historical events and their impact on the world.

W.A. JOHNSON SCHOOL Kindergarten students at W.A. Johnson Schools celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by creating their own alebrijes. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures, and these young artists really used their imaginations to craft their own versions of these colorful creatures.

TIOGA SCHOOL Throughout the monthlong celebration, Tioga students enjoyed read-alouds and sing-alongs of Hispanic stories and songs. Additionally, many Tioga staff members collaborated to create a powerful display that showcased artifacts and shared stories of their families’ Hispanic heritage.

COATS4KIDS Thank you, Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary, for keeping BSD2 students warm this winter. Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary Club’s Coats4Kids distribution was held Saturday, October 14, at W.A. Johnson School. This annual event provides around 500 new winter coats for BSD2 students in need. Their families are referred to Coats4Kids by teachers and school staff looking to ensure that every student has a warm coat to wear in the winter. District 2 both benefits and supports Coats4Kids. Lara Schwarz, BSD2 Community Liaison, is President of Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary, and James Stoltman, a BSD2 Board Member, is its Vice President. Every year, numerous staff, students and community members also support the program by donating money to buy new coats and by volunteering to help with distribution. Thanks to everyone who supported Coats4Kids this year!

FREE BREAKFAST! FREE LUNCH!

District 2 now offering free meals to ALL BSD2 students! This year, District 2 began offering free breakfast and lunch to all students in Grades K-8. The Illinois State Board of Education and the District 2 school board both approved the District’s participation in a new meals program - the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). In CEP, students only need to present their ID cards in their school’s meal lines to receive a free meal. • Families no longer have to submit applications to receive free or reduced-price meals. • Parents no longer have to deposit money into RevTrak or My School Bucks, or send cash or checks to the school office to pay for meals. • The District is contacting parents with balances to arrange for refunds. • À la carte items are still available for cash purchases at Blackhawk Middle School. • Parents that prefer to send their child with lunch can still do so if they choose. • Milk can still be purchased by students not obtaining a regular meal. • Lunch will be provided free of charge on field trip days.

BSD2 Early Childhood Program meets state’s highest goals for quality. The Illinois State Board of Education recently recognized Bensenville School District 2’s Pre-Kindergarten Program with the Gold Circle of Quality. Issued through ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s system for supporting continuous improvement among early learning providers, the Gold Circle of Quality is the highest rating a program can earn. The BSD2 Pre-KindergartenProgram earned this honor in 2019, and received it again this year for continuing to be actively engaged in continuous quality improvement, and for meeting the highest standards for quality in four areas: • Teaching & Learning • Family & Community Engagement

District 2 is offering free developmental screenings on Friday, December 1.

Do you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5? Professionals will assess the development of your child’s large and fine motor skills, pre-academic readiness, and speech, language, vision and hearing. The screening will help identify children who qualify for the District’s free preschool program, or who would benefit from additional services prior to entering kindergarten. Your child must be 3 years old by the screening date to participate. Screenings take about an hour and require an appointment. DOLLARS & SENSE

District 2 Board of Education approves 2023-2024 budget. The District 2 Board of Education approved the 2023-2024 budget at its September 20 meeting. The budget projects a small surplus, with expenditures and revenues roughly balancing at $46.3 million. At its low point, the District’s fund balance is projected to stand at $28 million at the end of May. The budget will allow the District to continue to offer all of its programs while continuing renovations at Blackhawk and expanding its meal program to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. The 2023-2024 School Year is off to a great start and we have plenty to share and celebrate. Fenton is your high school and we are proud to be the hub of this community. Construction Update I’m thrilled to report that our construction project in and around our stadium is progressing on-schedule. As you know, a large underground tank was installed behind the stadium and new, larger pipes were buried in the stadium as well as various locations around our school to collect stormwater and move it into the new tank. The tank is complete and almost all of the new pipes are installed. We are now largely focusing on the installation of new artificial field turf. This incredible opportunity is a byproduct of needing to replace stormwater pipes inside the stadium. Once completed, we can bring soccer home to Fenton for the first time in decades. We can also have multiple teams, clubs, and classes use the field every day without pausing to let grass regrow.

Homecoming Congratulations to our Homecoming Royalty and all the winners from our Homecoming Bonfire competitions. Thank you to Mrs. Casterton, her team of Class Council Advisors, and Assistant Principal Julia Bray for all the awesome tropical themed activities. We also had visits from the Alumni Class of 2003, 1993, 1983, and 1963. We value our school’s rich history and all the relationships we maintain that promote our legacy and often lead toward opportunities for current students.

Day of Service Community Service is a unique and cherished graduation requirement at Fenton High School. Volunteering one’s time and energy to improve their community creates common ground, builds empathy, and unites us as neighbors. In late September about 60 students participated in Fenton’s Day of Service by volunteering with projects at Fischer Farm, making blankets at the Bensenville Public Library as part of the Linus Project, and several stayed at Fenton cleaning Homecoming decorations or writing thank you letters to military veterans and those who donate to the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry. Thank you to our neighbors and community partners for allowing our students to learn and grow from your passions.

Band & Choir Holiday Concert Our 98th Annual Band & Choir Concert takes place Sunday, December 17 at 2 pm in the Fenton Auditorium. This incredible show is a must-see event that is free and open to the public.

Thank you to Chicago Bears Coach Matt Eberflus for generously donating money for our new girls flag football team to get competition jerseys. The Mighty Bison visited Halas Hall in August to talk with female employees and learn about career opportunities in the NFL. Their visit was featured on a Fox gameday broadcast. We are so very grateful for these incredible opportunities to play ball with Bison Pride and to plan for life changing careers.

FENTON BASKETBALL PLAYER EARNS ALL STATE HONORS Congratulations to Alejandro Diaz of the boys basketball team for earning All Upstate Eight Conference recognition and being named an honorable mention for the Class 3A All State Team during the 2022-2023 school year. “I want to thank my parents for investing their time and energy into me. I also want to thank Coach Taft. He does everything he can to get the most out of his players, and I think that’s a big reason I received this All State honor,” Alejandro told the Fenton School Board. Alejandro averaged of 17 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. He also took 15 charges while on defense and made 87% of his free throws. FENTON STUDENTS EARN 5S ON AP EXAMS Congratulations to the 15 remarkable Fenton students and alums who earned 5 out of 5 points on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams last spring. A high score, especially a 5 out of 5, means the students earned college credit while still in high school. The Fenton Board of Education recognized each student during its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, September 27. Seven of the top scores are from returning students who have more opportunities to earn college credit. Two students even earned a 5 on multiple exams! Each returning student received a congratulatory yard signs and Take 5 candy bars.

FENTON STUDENTS COMMAND THE CLASSROOM Students in Introduction to Education with Mrs. Seredy Williams are doing mini internships at Johnson School and Tioga School in Bensenville, as well as Westview School in Wood Dale. When visiting these schools 2 hours per day, three days per week (60 total hours per semester), Fenton students gain valuable experience working with children and speaking in front of classes. These valuable experiences help advance Mrs. Williams’ curriculum and the lessons she can develop for the Fenton students. Intro to Education is part of Fenton’s growing Career Pathway programming aimed at helping students explore and choose careers to pursue after high school. This course is part of the Education and Training college and career pathway, which offers an endorsement on high school diplomas if all courses are completed. VILLAGE TOY DRIVE The Village will be accepting donations for our annual toy drive during the entire month of November. Donation boxes will be located at the Bensenville Library, Village Hall, Police Department, Deer Grove Leisure Center, and local businesses throughout the Village. Our goal is to help ensure Bensenville families in need have an opportunity to provide their children with toys this holiday season. Nonperishable food and new or lightly used coats will also be accepted in partnership with the Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary Coat Drive and Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry. HOLIDAY LIGHT RECYCLING PROGRAM The Village has partnered with Elgin Recycling to offer holiday light recycling free of charge. Be on the lookout for Benny Da Plow this winter! Back in March, Bensenville resident Lillian Callahan submitted this catchy and endearing name as part of the Village’s Snowplow Naming Contest. Now, Benny Da Plow is gearing up to become your winter hero by keeping the streets of Bensenville safe and accessible all season long. As part of these efforts, the Village of Bensenville worked with students from Fenton High School to craft a design and even received special permission from none other than the Chicago Bulls to use their iconic mascot logo on the plow. We sincerely thank everyone who took part in this fun contest as well as the Chicago Bulls for allowing us to use their mascot logo. As a reminder, please do not park or keep a vehicle on public streets after a (2”) or more snowfall for twenty-four (24) hours, or until the streets have been cleared of snow. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto the public streets or public alleyways is also prohibited.

SENIOR/DISABLED SNOW REMOVAL PROGRAM The Village of Bensenville Senior Snow Removal Program is designed to help those in our community who need assistance obtaining a low-cost solution to snow removal on their driveways, sidewalks, and private walks. The Village will hire independent contractors for common snow removal services and will subsidize half of the cost. Service prices range from $15.00-$25.00 depending on the option you select. The program does have specific eligibility requirements (listed below) that require documentation to prove eligibility. Senior Program

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR... MANAGE REFUSE CONTAINERS | Trash containers provide the most common food source for rats. Containers need to be large enough to prevent overflow and in good repair to keep rodents out. Keep lids and drain plugs closed. Be sure to bag food trash and place the bags gently into the container to keep the bags intact. Keep the container away from the building exterior.

With temperatures cooling down, now is a great time for Bensenville residents to take steps to prevent rodent infestations on your property. Below are several tips to consider while rodent-proofing your home this winter. PROPERLY SEAL BUILDING OPENINGS | Rodents can enter through any space larger than ¼-inch. Pay special attention to fascia boards, vents, and any cracks or gaps along the building foundation.

REMOVE EXTERIOR CLUTTER | Rodents burrow in loose rubbish that provides them with protection from predators. Move equipment and firewood away from the structure and store properly off the ground and away from the structure. Remove windblown trash and spillage from the fence line and from the building foundation. Please remove all pet feces.

PEST-PROOF DOORS | Use a brush strip or compression seal to prevent any gaps more than ¼-inch through which rodents can enter. REMOVE INTERIOR CLUTTER | Rodents are attracted to areas that have little or no airflow, and protect them from predators. Store all products in a neat orderly fashion at least 12 inches off the ground and 18 inches from the exterior wall.
