District 2 launched its Home Visit Program three years ago with a goal of strengthening families’ connections to their schools simply by meeting them where they’re at — their homes. Along the way, the District discovered that the program achieves this goal while simultaneously changing the way participating teachers relate to their students. “The opportunity to visit a family strengthens the connection with our students on many levels,” said Nancy Donohue, who teaches bilingual students in Blackhawk Middle School’s Newcomer class. “The Bensenville community has a wide variety of incredible people, so offering services like language support, legal advice and even an answer to a simple question allows parents and caregivers to feel safe. This translates to a secure student, and their chance to make a difference at school grows! A plate of cookies helps, too.”

Laura Negrete, a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Tioga School and a participant in the District’s Home Visit Program since its creation, visits the home of one of her student’s families.

Teachers in the Home Visit Program aim to visit each of their students’ homes twice during the school year. On average, this requires these teachers to conduct at least one home visit a week. During these visits, they don’t discuss academics. Instead, they aim to get to know their students better simply by meeting their families and experiencing their home lives. “These teachers really begin to learn who their students and their families are when they sit down in their living rooms or at their dinner tables and engage them in casual, friendly conversations,” said Dr. James Stelter, District 2 Superintendent of Schools. “And they can’t help but personalize the environment when they walk into their students’ homes. Those experiences change their assumptions about their students, and provide them with a new context about the students when they leave the classroom and return home.” “That changes the way these teachers relate to all of their students,” emphasized Dr. Stelter. “It changes the way they teach them. It makes them better educators.” Getting 100 percent participation from families is one of the goals of teachers in the Home Visit Program. Three years in, that goal remains a tough one to achieve, as they average a participation rate of around 60 percent. Of course, that means 60 percent of their students’ families have opened their doors to them! “That’s exciting because -- again -- our broad goal was always to increase family engagement,” said Dr. Stelter. “And the feedback we’ve received from these families indicates they’ve enjoyed these visits and now feel more connected to their child’s teacher and school. They’re comfortable reaching out to their child’s teacher now, and we hope they’re more likely to sign up for parent-teacher conferences, attend school-wide events, become part of their PTA, and consider themselves part of their school community.”

FULL SERVICE!

COATS FOR FAMILIES

More great grant news for District 2. In September, Bensenville School District 2 received the U.S. Department of Education’s Full Service Community Grant for $2.5 million. This is just the latest good grant news the District has received. In June, the Illinois State Board of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants program awarded District 2 and Fenton High School $3 million to fund critical community schools initiatives over the next five years. The 21st Century grant will fund new before- and after-school RISE Academies at Bensenville’s four public schools. Those academies will provide programming focused on such topics as Academic Enrichment, Arts Integration, Technology, Social-Emotional Learning, College and Career Readiness, and Parent and Family Support. This $2.5 million Full Service grant will provide District 2 $500,000 a year for the next five years to support the following: • High-quality early childhood education programs. • High-quality school and out-of-school time programming. • Support for children’s transitions into elementary, middle, and high school, and on to post-secondary education and the workplace. • Family and community engagement supports for at-home student learning, • Social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports. Look for more details about the exciting opportunities to be made possible by these grants in the weeks and months to come!

What do you love about your child’s school? Tell us in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey Bensenville School District 2 will begin administering the Illinois 5Essentials Survey on Wednesday, November 15. This survey provides students, teachers, and parents a voice in our ongoing efforts to improve our schools. But it is also an opportunity to tell us what you love about your child’s school! That too, is an incredibly important part of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey because its results reflect what we as a community value about our schools. From state report cards to real estate rating websites, its results are often used to paint a picture of you, your family, and your neighborhood.

Rotary to provide winter clothing for families in need. Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary will distribute new and gently used winter clothing to families in need during its 17th annual Coats for Families event, Saturday, December 8, from 9-11 am at W.A. Johnson School, located at 252 Ridgewood Avenue in Bensenville. Coats will be distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis. Children must be present to receive a coat, and adult coats will be available on a limited basis. Families are encouraged to exchange children’s coats that are still in good condition but no longer fit. Rotary’s Coats for Families event is held in conjunction with the Village of Bensenville’s 48th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Residents can support these efforts by donating new and unwrapped toys, new or gently used coats, and new hats, scarves and non-perishable food items at donation boxes located throughout the community. Monetary donations to Rotary’s Coats for Families event can be made by visiting www.operationwarm.org/ BensenvilleRotary. Every $20 donation buys a new winter coat for a child in need.

Keep the Wreath Red As the holiday season begins, you will notice a large holiday wreath on the front of the Bensenville Fire Protection District stations. Each of the wreaths will be decorated with large red bulbs that will be illuminated during the holiday season. Should a fire occur during the holiday season that is determined to have been directly caused by a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace the red bulb. The idea is for the residents of the Bensenville Fire Protection District to be exceptionally safety conscious during the holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

Electrical Safety

Flipping a light switch. Plugging in a coffeemaker. Charging a laptop computer. These are second nature for most of us. Electricity makes our lives easier. However, we need to be cautious and keep safety in mind.

SAFETY TIPS KKK Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician. KKK When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified inspector. KKK Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time. KKK Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used. KKK Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home. Use a qualified electrician. KKK Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected. KKK Test AFCIs and GFCIs once a month to make sure they are working properly. KKK Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords. KKK Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture. There should be a sticker that indicates the maximum wattage light bulb to use.

Important remInder

Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have: • Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers • A tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance • Discolored or warm wall outlets • A burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance • Flickering or dimming lights • Sparks from an outlet
