MOSQUITO CONTROL The Village takes mosquito control and your safety very seriously. We have a multifaceted approach to try and reduce the number of mosquitos in town including four full town sprays. If you would like more information, please call our Mosquito Hotline Citizen Response at 800.942.2555.
How You Can Help Clear your property of any potential breeding sites: 1. Throw away, or turn over, any containers that may collect water, such as jars, flower pots, wheelbarrows, children’s toys or play pools. 2. Clear out pipes and gutters. Make sure there is no standing water; clean out any dirt, leaves or debris that may be blocking the flow of water. 3. Repair leaky pipes. 4. Maintain a regular schedule of pool cleaning, using the proper chemicals. Drain swimming pools that are no longer maintained or used. 5. Make sure outdoor garbage cans are covered. 6. Check your septic drain fields. Make sure water doesn’t accumulate. 7. Don’t let water sit on tarps, swimming pool covers or plastic sheeting over patio furniture. 8. Get rid of old tires. If you have a tire swing for children, drill holes in the bottom so that it does not hold water.
HELP KEEP OUR STORM WATER CLEAN Storm water runoff is rainwater that runs off rooftops, lawns, driveways and streets. As it flows, it picks up dirt, leaves and grass clippings, pesticides and fertilizers, oil, litter and other harmful contaminants. All of these pollutants are carried by storm water into storm drains and ultimately into our creeks and rivers which ends up in Lake Michigan. There are simple ways that residents and businesses can help to reduce the pollutants that enter our creeks and rivers:

UÊ Don’t dump used motor oil, antifreeze or other hazardous materials on the ground or into sewers. Recycling programs are available for these hazardous materials and many service stations accept used motor oil for recycling. UÊ When cleaning your driveway, dock or parking lots, use a broom instead of water. Dispose of debris in the trash not in the street or storm sewer. UÊ Don’t dump branches, leaves or grass clippings along creek beds, in open ditches, or in the street. UÊ Minimize the use of herbicides and fertilizers on your lawn. UÊ Pick up litter and place in trash cans. UÊ Cover piles of dirt and wood mulch while doing landscaping projects and sweep up debris—don’t wash it into the street. For information on how to keep our storm water clean, contact our Public Works Department at 630.350.3435 or go to www.bensenville.il.us A

VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE’S ARBOR DAY DEDICATION TO DR. KATHIE PIERCE On Tuesday, May 10, the Fenton community celebrated the career of Dr. Kathie Pierce during an Arbor Day tree dedication in partnership with the Village of Bensenville and Tree City USA. Dr. Pierce retired from Fenton High School in January after 33 years of service to the school. During the ceremony, Bensenville’s Director of Public Works, Joseph Caracci explained that the tree selected to be planted on the Fenton campus to honor Dr. Pierce was a Cherry Plum. The tree is expected to bloom throughout the seasons and also produce edible cherry plums. District 100 School Board President, Mary Ribando thanked Dr. Pierce for her years of service and for “not only educating and inspiring our students but making sure that each student reached their fullest potential.” Pictured from left: Forestry Technician, Frank Palumbo; Seasonal Forestry, Colin Gaerlan; Public Works Director, Joseph Caracci; Forestry Technician, Rodrigo Trujillo; Dr. Kathie Pierce; Public Works Assistant Director, Rick Radde; District 100 Board President, Mary Ribando, District 100 Board Member, David Shimanek; Village Manager, Evan K. Summers; Fenton Principal, James Ongtengco and District 100 Board Member, Susan Ralph. Since 1976, the Tree City USA program has provided the tools to allow communities to manage and expand their tree population. To qualify for Tree City USA status a community must have an urban forestry management system in place, maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, commit to spend $2 per capita on urban forestry and hold Arbor Day celebrations.

NEW PLAYGROUND EXPECTED SOON AT MOHAWK SITE District 2 is hoping to partner with KaBOOM! to plan and build a new playground at the former Mohawk School site. The construction is anticipated to be this fall – completed in just one weekend! A formal announcement from KaBOOM! is expected this summer. The non-profit builds playgrounds nationwide for communities that lack adequate play space. The District and KaBOOM! already partnered in 2012 to build a Johnson School playground. To fund these projects, KaBOOM! enlists business sponsors, such as Home Depot and Kohl’s, to fund and build the playground in one weekend. KaBOOM! is enthusiastic about the Mohawk site and expects to secure a sponsor to fund the Mohawk playground build as early as this September. You can join the Plan and Build Team now! The team will design the playground this summer. Contact Lara Schwarz at 630.766.2605x3202.

DISTRICT 2 LEARNS MINDFULNESS Mindfulness is a buzzword popping up everywhere—even in educational settings. New research has shown that mindfulness strategies, such as breathing exercises, can help students concentrate and regulate feelings of anxiety or stress. District 2 administrators and staff are exploring how these techniques can be integrated into our schools. Mindfulness builds on the similar concept of social-emotional learning (SEL) by teaching students to focus on their emotions, thoughts and bodily sensations, impacting their behavior, stress levels and emotions. Together, mindfulness and SEL skills help students cultivate self-regulation, focus and self-compassion. In the next school year District 2 staff and parents will explore how mindfulness strategies can enhance and ignite a student’s desire to learn while improving the overall heath and emotional well being of all.
