VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE NEW ICE AT THE EDGE ICE ARENA As hockey season approaches, construction on the East and West ice rinks at the Edge Ice Arena are nearing completion. This brand new equipment will drastically improve the ice quality while reducing energy costs for both rinks, improving the overall experience for skaters. This $2.56 million dollar project began March 31, 2017 and is scheduled for completion in early fall of 2017. As a result of failures in the underfloor warming system, the flooring of the rink was experiencing heaving. This heaving ultimately produced inconsistent height throughout the rink floor, resulting in uneven ice thickness and increasing the amount of energy needed to refrigerate the floor of the rink. A 2016 refrigeration systems assessment by Stantec Engineering concluded that, “The failed rink subsoil heating systems have created a serious operational issue for the facility that needs to be addressed and corrected soon” and that “further progression of both frost depth and surface heaving should be expected. The heaved floor surfaces provide undesirable skating conditions, increased energy use, and greater possibility of leaks in the floor coolant piping that could result in the untimely complete failure of the refrigerated floors.” To repair the arena floor system, construction crews removed frost and replaced the concrete floor and embedding system. The processes required 70 truckloads of concrete to fill the entire base of the rink. Also replaced were the 20 and 21 year old original evaporative condensers. The condensers surpassed their typical lifespan of 15 years, and were replaced with more efficient models. These renovations also required staff to update several safety codes making the entire facility safer. These updates include the addition of ammonia diffusion tanks, increased ventilation and ammonia sensor replacements. Completing this project allows the Edge Ice Arena to maintain its reputation as a reliable, safe and well maintained facility. In addition, it satisfies the demands of current tenants as well as attracts regional, national and international level events. The recent signing of four long term facility usage agreements helped in making this project possible. Village President Frank DeSimone shared his enthusiasm about the project saying, “I am personally very excited that one of the first major projects of my administration will be delivering the fastest ice in the Midwest. I believe this renovation will help put Bensenville on the map.” The Village is excited for the doors to be open and for everyone to continue experiencing high quality ice skating in Bensenville.

This summer, Bensenville School District 2 mourned the loss of Thomas and Kyle DeMauro, Chuck and George Tomlitz, Kevin James King III, and James Francis, all of whom died July 1 in a tragic plane crash in northern Wisconsin. The group of longtime friends and family members was in route to an annual Canadian fishing trip when the Cessna 421C they were flying in crashed after suddenly losing altitude.
Thomas Demauro
Chuck Tomlitz
Tom DeMauro, 56, served for 31 years as a physical education teacher at Tioga School, and his son, Kyle DeMauro, 21, went through District 2 schools. Chuck Tomlitz, 70, served for 12 years as District 2’s GCA Maintenance Director, and George Tomlitz, 45, was his son. Kevin King, 70, was a Bensenville resident and the owner and pilot of the plane. James Francis, 63, resided in Norco, California, but made the trip every year with the fishing buddies he made while living in the Chicago area for 15 years. “Our District 2 family suffered greatly in the loss of two incredibly caring people,” said Dr. James Stelter, District 2 Superintendent of Schools. “Tom and Chuck gave willingly in helping anyone who would ask in addition to caring for our students and making our community a better place in which to work and live. Our thoughts and best wishes remain with their families, and the families of all those lost in this tragedy.”

Spanish-language children’s author is a special treat for Hispanic Heritage Month and the Halloween season
DuPage Foundation supports early learning efforts in District 2
R.C. Ontiveros, a children’s author and storyteller from Elgin, will join Bensenville School District 2 and Bensenville Community Public Library on October 4 for a special celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and the Halloween season.
Bensenville School District 2 recently received an $18,000 donation from the Bright & Early DuPage initiative of the DuPage Foundation.
Ontiveros’ recent book, La Bruja Que No Fue A La Escuela (The Witch Who Never Went to School), has received rave reviews. It follows a young witch as she explores her local public library and discovers a love of learning and reading through old potions and spells.
The donation was part of $317,612 of grants awarded this summer by the DuPage Foundation, and it will support ongoing collaborative efforts by the Bensenville Early Learning Supporters (BELS) to improve kindergarten-readiness among District 2 children from birth to age 5.
“I made a story where anyone–even witches–needs school,” said Ontiveros.
This is the third year the District has received a Bright & Early DuPage grant. To date, these donations have helped fund outreach operations that have connected more than 400 District 2 families in need with early learning services. They have also been used to provide families in need with transportation to educational events for their children, and to help them access mental health services.
This event will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, October 4, at Bensenville Community Public Library, 200 S. Church Road. District 2 will distribute 100 free copies of Ontiveros’ book to those attending the bilingual presentation. No registration is required to attend, but space is limited. For more information, contact Bensenville Community Public Library at 630.766.4642.

DO YOU CARE? Project CARE Welcome Day is September 6 Give just one hour of your time each week, and you can make a big difference in the lives of District 2 students! As a mentor with Project CARE Plus, you will mentor K-8 students in reading, math, science, or other subjects. To become a mentor, join us on Wednesday, September 6, at 10 am for a brief training session at the Educational Administration Center located at 210 S. Church Road in Bensenville.
Project CARE kicks off on Monday, September 18. For more information, please contact Lara Schwarz, Community Liaison and Project CARE Plus Coordinator, at 630.766.2605, ext. 3202 or lschwarz@bsd2.org.
Bensenville community comes together to support summer session for District 2’s ‘Newcomers.’ Newcomers in District 2’s English Language Learners (ELL) program continued to receive instruction this summer thanks in part to two generous grants from the Bensenville Youth Services Coalition and the Bensenville Community Foundation. Each organization donated $300 to help fund the summer session. The class met at Bensenville Community Public Library and was taught by Nancy Donohue, a bilingual teacher at Blackhawk Middle School who uses both English and Spanish to help students make connections with new words and ideas. Newcomers are students who recently arrived in District 2 from another country knowing little to no English. Ms. Donohue works with these students throughout the normal school year, and she organized this three-week summer session so her students could continue learning the language over the summer break. During the summer session, the students studied weather vocabulary, researched penguins in English, and hand sewed their own pinguinos to use in an iMovie they wrote, directed, and produced. Thank you, Bensenville Youth Services Coalition, Bensenville Community Foundation, and Bensenville Community Public Library, for partnering with District 2 to serve this special group of students. A

Clothes Dryer Safety
Doing laundry is most likely part of your every day routine. But did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire. KKK Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional. KKK Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
KKK Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum. KKK Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time.
KKK Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you. KKK Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. KKK Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly. KKK Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.
KKK Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
AND DON’T FOrGET...
Dryers should be properly grounded. Check the outdoor vent flap to make sure it is not covered by snow. Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn, like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc. Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry, then can be washed and dried as usual.
