The Bensenville Rotary Club gives four-year college scholarships exclusively to Bensenville high school seniors each year. In addition, the Rotary Club also funds a variety of local projects including Leadership Seminars for our students, a coat drive that provides up to 500 coats every year for low-income families and contributions to the Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry. In order to fund these important local projects, the Rotary Club holds an Annual Raffle and Dinner. This year the raffle tickets are being sold for $60 each. The dinner is at 6 p.m. on November 7 at White Pines Golf Club. Several cash prizes will be awarded including a first prize of $2,500! Individuals need not be present to win. Student Leadership Academy The students pictured will represent Fenton High School at the Student Leadership Academy for College and Career Success. The students will participate in several trainings throughout the school year which will focus on goal setting, resume writing and interviewing skills. During the trainings, the students will have the opportunity to meet with professionals from a variety of colleges and universities. The program is a community based education/business partnership and is sponsored by the DuPageArea Occupational Education System, Regional Office of Education, DuPage area school districts, local business and industry, chambers of commerce and post secondary institutions. District 2 was recognized with two honors of distinction by the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel program in October. Teacher Amy Walsh was one of 11 finalists from across the state for 2013-14 Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. James Stelter will also be honored with an Award of Recognition in Those Who Excel. Miss Walsh has been a classroom teacher since 2006 and taught 4th grade at Tioga and Chippewa Schools since 2010. This year, Miss Walsh is spending the year out of the classroom as a consulting teacher. As a recipient of an Award of Excellence, she is nominated for Teacher of the Year.

Superintendent Dr. James Stelter received an Award of Recognition in Those Who Excel Awards.
Dr. Stelter received the recognition award for his numerous accomplishments in student learning and achievement, closing the achievement gap for at-risk students, educational leadership in school reform initiatives, strategic planning, and financial acumen. Also, the District was an early adopter of the Common Core State Standards in 2010. In addition, he also helped the Board of Education navigate a critical school improvement dialog on becoming one of only two Race To The Top districts in DuPage County. Dr. Stelter joined District 2 as the Assistant Superintendent for Business Services over 10 years ago. He was promoted to Associate Superintendent in 2009. He was named Superintendent of Schools in 2010.

Be Part of School History...Engrave a Brick
Volunteers Needed for Legacy Project Planning
Money raised through the brick sale will be used to help pay for a public art project at each new school. A committee is now being formed to helped select the artist and project for each school. Ideas include a mural or sculpture the volunteers who are interested in helping guide the project at each school that will commemorate the opening of the new schools and represent the community’s history. Target Grant Funds African Drums at Tioga
Tioga music students will experience African Drumming as part of music and movement activities and music classes thanks for a $2,000 grant from Target Stores that music teacher Mrs. Emily Cooper received.
Band Director George Andrikokus has received the Young Conductor Award, a distinction given to just one grade school music teacher in Illinois each year. Mr. Andrikokus was selected for the Barbara Buehlman Young Conductor Award by the Illinois Grade School Music Association. Mr. Andrikokus teaches 5th grade band at Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools and 6th grade band at Blackhawk Middle School. He is also jazz band co-director. He joined District 2 this school year after having taught in Addison for six years where his jazz band received perfect scores in state competitions. “I have high expectations and want to create a culture of success where students take ownership,” he said.
“Drumming is a fun and engaging way to teach lifelong skills such as fairness, caring, responsibility, respect, self-control, citizenship, courage, trustworthiness, and integrity,” she said. The drums will be showcased at the Fine Arts Fest in February. B e n s e n v i l l e

Decorate A Holiday Tree Add your own special twinkle to the Village by decorating a lighted tree in Town Center. Schools, businesses and community organizations are all invited to decorate a tree to add to our festivities. Trees will remain on view - with your name on it - throughout the holiday season. To reserve a lighted tree, call 630766-8888. Trees are supplied free of charge but the number is limited, so call NOW!
The holidays are supposed to be a time filled with great joy and of course children’s laughter. But as we know, many families are hurting these days and some are struggling to pay bills and put food on the table, much less put something under the tree. Our Toy & Food Drive and the Rotary Club sponsored Coat Drive will begin November 1. This year we need to be more generous than ever before. Every child will receive new toys, a stuffed stocking and new books. Suggested donations include new, unwrapped toys and children’s books, nonperishable food items, gift cards and new hats, scarves and gloves. New and gently used coats are also accepted. Your cash contributions are also much needed and welcome. Collection boxes are located throughout the Village including at Village Hall, the Edge Ice Arena, Blackhawk Middle School, Bensenville Theatre, and the Bensenville Library, and the Bensenville Park District as well as many local businesses. Join Us For Some Holiday Magic! Sunday, November 24- 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Santa arrives on the Yuletide Express at 3 p.m. in Town Center to kick-off a joyous holiday season! Santa Claus will be taking photos with young visitors as they express their Christmas wishes. The train will take children of all ages around the Town Center. Carolers, face painters, live reindeer, carriage rides, free movies at the Bensenville Theatre and holiday music will entertain and FREE hot dogs, taffy apples, and hot chocolate will keep the chill away. Don’t miss our annual chili cook-off between Fire Departments around the region. The Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa and special guests will be held at 6 p.m.
Senior Citizen Club Holiday Party Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and live entertainment. The special holiday party will take place on Sunday, December 1 at 1p.m. at Monty’s Banquet Hall, doors open at noon. Tickets cost $10 for residents and $25 for non-residents and will be available for purchase at Village Hall. For information call 630-594-1010.
Star Of Giving New this holiday season, any donation of $10 or more in support the Bensenville Toy Drive will receive a “Star of Giving.” An ornamental star will be hung on the community Holiday Tree with your name on it!
