Drawnfromthe Sainsbury Centrecollection,thisexhibition celebratesthe abstractand constructedartmade and exhibitedinBritainsince1951.The free exhibition includesworkfrom thebeginningofthe1950s to the presentday,comprisingaround 120objects acrosssculpture, reliefs, mobiles,painting,drawingand printmaking. Theexhibition examinesthe riseofthisdramatic strandin post-warBritishart, ledbythe example of Victor Pasmore, who famouslyconverted to abstractart inthelate1940s.Butit was1951 that wouldprove to be avital year forthe artsinBritain. TheFestivalofBritain was staged acrossthecountry to celebratethe arts,sciences, technologyandindustrial design, andthe first exhibitiondevoted to abstractartsincebeforethe warwas presented by theArtists’ International Association;Victor Pasmoreand MaryMartinmade theirfirst reliefsculptures,and KennethMartinhisfirst mobile. GoodwoodSteps(1996) by AnthonyCaroismonumental, spanning over 35 metresin length andreaching over 3metresin height.Occupyingthespace between art andarchitecture,the work isfabricatedinsteeland consistsof sevensteppedziggurat sections,joined by floorplates that formsweepingarcs.The surfaceofthesculpturehas oxidised to arich, earthy iron colour, afinishfamiliar to many other worksbyCaro.

Laudedasthe greatestBritish sculptor ofhis generation, AnthonyCaro(1924-2013)is internationallyrecognisedas oneofthe mastersofmodern sculpture,andisbestknownfor hislarge-scalemetalassemblages made from foundindustrial objects.Entryfree, no ticket required.
