or the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, 2011 began as a year of tough challenges, tough decisions and tough times. But tough times can show you what you are made of and can often bring out strengths you might not have realized you had. This was the case for the Chamber because 2011 ended up being a year filled with good times, amazing volunteers, talented leadership and a much needed resetting of direction. It was not a time for business as usual, and so, the Board of Directors set on a journey to rebuild and rethink everything about the Chamber. Our philosophy was and is simple—focus on adding value for our members and the community.

As we began 2012, we knew it was time to get back to basics. We reframed our mission and activities to align with what Chamber members want and need.

I must take a moment to recognize some key people who gave their time, energy and passion for the Chamber to get us to where we are today. Dr. Sean Wright, as the 2011 Chairman, set the vision and successfully led the Chamber through the rough times and spent countless hours rebuilding relationships and running day-to-day operations.

he city of Antioch is a wonderful community nestled within the heart of northern California, midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION

L

ocation is one of Antioch’s most significant assets.

The city is positioned at the meeting point of the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers in eastern Contra Costa County, approximately 45 miles from San Francisco and 65 miles from Sacramento.

Antioch’s position in the outlying San Francisco Bay Area places it within reach of numerous transportation outlets.

State Route 4 (California Delta Highway improvements) runs east to west through the heart of the community, connecting with State Route 160 on its eastern edge. Tri Delta Transit serves as eastern Contra Costa County’s main public transit service, offering several daily bus routes and dial-a-ride service in Antioch and the surrounding area. Commuters also utilize the services of AC Transit, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Amtrak regional rail.

The city’s transportation options will be expanding in the near future with the establishment of the East Contra Costa BART extension (eBART) near the Hillcrest Ave. exit off State Route 4. This project will extend the BART rail system an additional 10 miles from the current Pittsburg/Bay Point stop into Antioch at the forthcoming Hillcrest Avenue Station, which will offer an easier connection to destinations across the East Bay. Construction on eBART began in 2011; service is scheduled to begin in 2016.

ntioch and eastern Contra Costa County continue to draw new residents thanks to the region’s affordable housing, enviable location and overall quality of life. As a result of the area’s attractive real estate market, coupled with its access to top recreation, education, healthcare and public services, Antioch continues to see a surge in population. Recent statistics show a jump in the local residential population from 90,532 in 2000 to 103,054 in 2011.

PARKS & RECREATION

N

oted as the “Gateway to the Delta,” Antioch is a natural recreation destination. The city sits at the confluence of the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers, making Antioch a major draw for boaters, hunters, anglers and other water sports enthusiasts. The Delta area is also a top destination for camping and relaxation because it boasts numerous waterfront resorts and quality campgrounds/RV parks.

Several well-maintained park sites and outdoor venues are available in the area, beginning with the City of Antioch’s Recreation Department. It oversees more than 300 acres of parkland and facilities in the community, with notable sites including the Antioch Water Park, the municipal Marina and a dog park at Markley Creek Park.

Within the local parks, guests find ball and soccer fields, basketball courts, picnic sites, playgrounds and tot lots, trails and open space.

The community is also home to several locations under the direction of the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). The 780-acre Contra Loma Regional Park is great for year-round fishing, swimming, hiking, biking and opportunities for nature study. The Antioch/Oakley Regional Shoreline Park supplies easy access to fishing in the San Joaquin River. EBRPD also manages the Delta de Anza Regional Trail, which intersects at Antioch’s Mokulumne Trail and at the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, a more than 6,000-acre area featuring hiking trails, picnic sites, naturalist programs, two camping areas and tours of the Hazel-Atlas Mine.

Antioch is also home to the Dow Wetlands preserve, a 472-acre wildlife habitat open to the public for recreation and enjoyment. The wetlands have received numerous awards, including the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Habitat of the Year. The property is home to beavers, otters, rabbits and more than 150 species of birds.

Together, the City Recreation Department and EBRPD supply a year-round catalog of recreational activities for residents of all ages. Antioch residents maintain an active lifestyle through enrichment offerings such as aquatics classes, day camps, athletic leagues, fitness classes, senior programs and free summer concerts.

The recreational outlets don’t end there. The city also hosts the Antioch Indoor Sports Center, Four Stars Gymnastics Academy, Paradise Skate Roller Rink and two 18-hole championship golf courses; the Golf Club at Roddy Ranch and Lone Tree Golf Course, both of which present a challenge to golfers of all skill levels.

T

here is plenty to see and do in Antioch. Visitors to the area enjoy visiting Antioch’s revitalized downtown district, historic sites, galleries, theatres and museums – and don’t forget about the number of exciting community events held throughout the year!

Downtown Antioch features a dynamic “Main Street” with a collection of local stores, restaurants and historically significant structures. A number of historic buildings have been preserved downtown, including the Hard House, Masonic Lodge, Beede Lumber Company building, the Lynn House Gallery and the El Campanil Theatre.

The El Campanil Theatre, built in 1928, is a widely popular community performing arts venue that hosts a calendar year full of events, including live theatre from the local Vagabond Players, El Campanil Children’s Theatre and other traveling troupes, as well as a variety of dance productions, concerts, films, comedy shows and more.

Also in the downtown area are the Nick Rodriguez Theatre – home to the Stage Right Conservatory Theatre for children – and the Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch’s Lynn House

Just outside of Downtown Antioch is the Antioch Historical Society Museum. Housed in the former Riverview High School (the first high school constructed in the county), the museum is highlighted by an extensive collection of local historic artifacts and the distinct Sports Legends Hall of Fame museum, which preserves the athletic achievements of community members. The site is a piece of history in and of itself, and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Antioch is also home to the Mangini Agricultural Museum, located on the county fairgrounds. Among the attractions found in the museum are historic farming equipment, antique wagons and carriages, a restored fire engine, a blacksmith shop and a country kitchen. Visitors are also invited to participate in various educational programs centered on agriculture, food, nutrition and the environment.

Enjoying Antioch’s culture continues through the many local events that bring community members and guests together for fun and entertainment. Antioch is the home of the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds – a site that hosts a long list of year-round events, including the annual County Fair, Spring Celebration and Harvest Festival.

Additional signature events occurring throughout the year in Antioch include the Delta Blues Festival, the 4th of July Hometown Parade, Relay for Life and others.

I

nstilling a sense of lifelong learning is paramount to residents of Antioch – and with a host of educational outlets available in town, community members of all ages and backgrounds have what they need to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.

The public school system serving the local K-12 population is the Antioch Unified School District (AUSD). More than 18,500 students are enrolled in grades K-1. AUSD has 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, three specialized high schools, two alternative high schools and one K-8 facility. It also offers a home schooling program, adult education courses and other unique programs to fit the needs of all students.

AUSD strives to offer a variety of high school academic opportunities for students. The district’s goal is to increase the college and career readiness of all students by offering Smaller Learning Communities of Linked Leaning Pathways throughout the district. Students are able to select an

academic program based on their educational interests. These unique programs create valuable opportunities for all students. Through quality instruction and curriculum, AUSD’s goal is to ensure that all students graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to make successful transitions to college and careers. Studies have shown that students benefit from Linked Learning Pathways because they can connect academics to the real world, see career options and understand what is required to succeed after high school. This approach has made Antioch a leader in educational excellence admired throughout the country.

Joining the area’s public schools are numerous daycare and preschool centers, as well as private college preparatory and parochial institutions offering primary and/or secondary academic programs. The area’s private and parochial schools present a unique learning environment that serves as a great alternative to public education.

adult learners and the general community have ready access to two outstanding colleges in town – and several others located in surrounding areas.

Many students choose to begin their college career at Carrington College California’s Antioch campus.

Carrington College Antioch offers associate degrees and certificates in several career-focused programs, including criminal justice, dental and medical assisting, massage therapy, medical billing/coding, pharmacy technology and vocational nursing. Carrington College California also offers six-week online programs in other career areas.

For those looking to explore entry-level healthcare positions, Antioch’s Contra Costa Medical Career College (CCMCC) is a first-class choice. CCMCC is a private college that provides a multitude of advanced vocational training courses in specialties such as phlebotomy, clinical medical assisting, medical administrative assisting/billing and coding and IV certification.

In addition to these colleges, Antioch is served by Los Medanos College in Pittsburg and at its Brentwood Center. Through LMC’s Pittsburg campus and Brentwood Center, students are invited to enroll in general education requirements, transfer courses, computer science and business courses and associate degree programs in various programs of study.

Antioch also hosts the Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center – one of the newest additions to the local medical community. The medical center, which offers a number of outstanding services and programs, is a designated Primary Stroke Center and recently received a Certificate of Excellence from the Independent California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Task Force (CHART). Antioch Medical Center was also named a 2011 Leapfrog Top Hospital for its successful use of electronic health records.

Along with the main medical center campus, Kaiser Permanente also offers the Delta Fair Medical Offices in Antioch, where patients take advantage of a variety of services, including imaging, laboratory, pharmacy, primary care, vision and specialty care.

Antioch residents have access to several facilities managed by the John Muir Health System, as well.

The system operates medical centers, outpatient centers, urgent care centers, laboratories and other specialty facilities in Antioch, Brentwood, Walnut Creek, Concord and other surrounding communities.

One of John Muir Health’s closest facilities is the John

five-member City Council, comprised of a mayor, mayor pro tem and three council members, along with an elected City Clerk and Treasurer, lead the City of Antioch. The council directly appoints the city manager and city attorney. These community leaders are paramount to the prosperity and high quality of life discovered here, as elected officials and city staff work in tandem to ensure the city’s future well being.
