MAYNARD

BERLIN www.townofberlin.com Incorporated in 1812, Berlin has evolved as a predominantly agricultural community. Although shoe manufacturing and lumber supplied non-agrarian jobs during Berlin’s development, specialty market agriculture has proven to be its most successful industry. Historic buildings and homes contribute to Berlin’s quaint ambiance where approximately 2,400 residents enjoy the stability and comfort of this picturesque town.

www.townofmaynard-ma.gov Settled in 1638, Maynard was built on hard work and progressive thinking. Along the Assabet River, grist and sawmills emerged as its first industries in the early 1700s and gave way to paper and powder mills in the 1800s. Wool eventually became Maynard’s driving industry. In fact, the American Woolen Company was the largest woolen mill in the world and generated electricity for the entire town. Today, Maynard’s downtown hosts Clock Tower Place—home to many high-tech industries—as well as dozens of unique shops and eateries. At nearly 10,500 residents, Maynard is centrally located between Boston and Worcester and within an hour’s drive of five state parks, 11 golf courses and two ski areas.

BOLTON www.townofbolton.com Nestled on the uplands east of the Nashua River Valley, Bolton is a lovely community of nearly 5,000. Since it was settled in 1675, Bolton has evolved into a thriving agrarian community composed of rustic rural landscapes that have remained virtually intact over the years. Today, Bolton is predominantly residential, serving as a quaint suburb for surrounding industrial communities.

HUDSON www.townofhudson.org An estimated 18,200 people reside in Hudson, a community with a layered past that spans all the way back to the early 1600s. Farming was the first means of commerce; however, Hudson quickly developed a knack for industrial innovation. Nestled along the banks of the Assabet River, Phineas Sawyer established the first cotton mill in Massachusetts. In the mid 1850s, Hudson became the state’s leading producer of shoes, and by the late 1800s, the manufacturing of rubber products was the town’s largest industry. Hudson had strong ties to the abolitionist movement, with several homes serving as stops on the Underground Railroad. The Goodale House was one such home and still stands today as Hudson’s oldest known residence. Today, Hudson reflects its distinguished past through its many historic homes, businesses and a recently revitalized downtown district. A diverse community, exceptional educational facilities and continued success in business and industry keep Hudson prosperous.

STOW www.stow-ma.gov Considered a “rural oasis,” Stow has numerous recreational opportunities. Pine Bluff beach, tennis, hiking, ice skating and cross country skiing are amongst the town’s amusements. Located 25 miles west of Boston, Stow’s proximity to Boston compliments its rural atmosphere. The town’s largest industries include five apple orchards, five golf courses and BOSE. Many of the golf courses are recognized as the best courses in the state. TRANSPORTATION he Assabet Valley Region is situated in Central Eastern Massachusetts, within the greater Boston metropolitan area. The Assabet River flows through the area, rising in Westborough and traveling 31 miles northeast to end in Concord, where it merges with the Sudbury River at Egg Rock to create the Concord River. Beyond the beautiful backdrop of the region, the area’s location has made commuting quick and efficient with an established road infrastructure, plus easy access to rail and air travel.

BY ROAD Interstate 495 traverses through the center of the area, offering links to Interstates 90 and 290. Additionally, a number of state highways and U.S. highway routes wind in and around Assabet Valley connecting this area to a host of regional destinations.

BY RAIL Commuter rail lines through the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) are accessible via the Framingham/Worcester Line, which begins at Worcester’s Union Station and ends at South Station in Boston. Commuter rails are available in Acton and Southborough as well. Furthermore, Worcester and Framingham host Amtrak rail services. BY AIR General aviation services, especially for the small plane owners, can be found at both Minute Man Air Field in Stow and Marlboro Airport in Marlborough, while commercial services to a variety of regional terminuses are accessed at Hanscom Field in Bedford and Worcester Regional Airport. However, the majority of residents utilize larger regional airports such as Logan Airport in Boston (45 minutes), TF Green Airport outside of Providence, RI (75 minutes) and the Manchester, NH airport (75 minutes).j

GOLFING The Assabet Valley Region possesses over 12 golf courses, of which about half are private. They range from nine-hole par threes to Charter Oak’s award-winning course designed by Trent Jones.

SKIING Both Wachusett Mountain and Nashoba Valley Ski Area are within an easy 45-minute drive from the Region. Additionally, there is plentiful skiing two hours north in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Development is ongoing. Upon completion, this multi-use recreational trail will travel through the communities of Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Maynard and Acton. Not only do Hudson and Stow possess their own fresh water beaches, but the Atlantic Ocean is within an easy drive from all Assabet Valley communities. Salt water beaches of lower Cape Cod, Southern Maine and New Hampshire are under a 90-minute drive.j

Currently serving approximately 3,000 students, the district has a mission to promote students’ intellectual, ethical and social development. Approximately 1,200 of these students are at the high school. The new high school, completed in 2005, received the ’07 Architectural Award Citation from the American Association of School Administrators. Additionally, Hudson High School ranks in the top five percent of the nation’s high schools.

This district includes the communities of Bolton, Lancaster and Stow. Children go to elementary and middle school in their respective communities and then all attend the Nashoba Regional High School. The school district serves approximately 3,300 students, 925 of which are at the high school, with an average class size of 19. Like Hudson, the Nashoba Regional ranks in the top five percent of the nation’s high schools.

Serving over 900 students from 11 communities, including Berlin, Hudson and Maynard, this institution offers a number of technical and academic programs, ultimately preparing students to enter the workforce upon completion. The district serves 478 students from the communities of Berlin and Boylston. Children attend elementary school in their own community, and then attend the Tahonto Regional Middle & High School for the duration of their public school career. The system boasts a student/teacher ratio of 13.6:1.

The district serves almost 1,500 students and supports both small class sizes and a full-day kindergarten. The 350-student high school sends 80 percent of its graduates to four-year colleges. The new Fowler School, serving grades 4-8, was opened in 2001. District officials are working with the MSBA to renovate or rebuild the High School. Minuteman Regional High School www.minuteman.org

The facility is primarily a technical and vocational high school that serves over 825 students from 16 communities, including Bolton and Stow. This institution offers a number of technical and academic programs, ultimately preparing students to enter the workforce upon completion.

Its business community is extremely diverse, with agricultural endeavors successfully integrated with industrial operations and the service-oriented enterprises nestled in the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vibrant central business districts of Hudson and Maynard.
