A Great Place TO

Raise a Family

Beaver Dam is a city of 16,000 people situated on the southeast shore of Beaver Dam Lake. The urban setting of the city blends into the suburban neighborhoods in adjacent townships and seamlessly transitions to century-old farms in outlying Dodge County. The city is a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. Quality of life has always been one of the chief themes of city officials, civic leaders and the business community in Beaver Dam. This has included stewardship of man-made Beaver Dam Lake, one of the state’s largest lakes with 41 miles of shoreline. Over the past century the community has established parks on the lake and along the Beaver Dam River. The community has 19 municipal parks located throughout the city.

Rogers Cinema in downtown Beaver Dam has 5 screens including a Mega-Screen theatre.

Neighborhood elementary schools, a centrally located middle school and high school enable most students to walk to school, provide easy access for parents and families to participate in school activities or programs. In addition, the community is

served by excellent private Lutheran and Catholic grade schools and nationally recognized Wayland Academy, the oldest co-educational college preparatory high school in America.

The Dodge County Fair boasts fun, food and excitement, include Pig Races!

Beaver Dam provides all the necessities of life, plus some of life’s luxuries. Its proximity to the largest cities in Wisconsin provides easy access to the most metropolitan attractions, an international airport and collegiate and professional sporting events. The friendly, welcoming, small-town atmosphere of Beaver Dam endears itself to new residents, making it a comfortable place to live for generations of families. Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake, just blocks from downtown, hosts free water ski shows on Sundays.

In the last few years Beaver Dam saw the completion of the new YMCA of Dodge County and a new Beaver Dam Community Hospital. The community is only 10 minutes away from the Dodge County Airport. Recreational and cultural opportunities include the Beaver Dam Family Center & Ice Arena, the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre, the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association and the Beaver Dam Raceway. In addition, the community hosts events, big and small, year-round including the huge sewing expo, Nancy’s Notions, each spring. Manufacturing, service and retail business have grown with the community. Manufacturing and service businesses

account for a substantial amount of local employment. Retail includes everything from mom and pop-owned small businesses, big-box to national retailers. Beaver Dam’s location along U.S. Highway 151 provides direct access to Madison (45 minutes to the State Capitol from downtown Beaver Dam) to the southwest, and to Fond du Lac (35 minutes, downtown to downtown) to the northeast. Beaver Dam is also only 90 minutes northwest of downtown Milwaukee, the largest city in the state, and only one hour east of Wisconsin Dells, consistently one of the Midwest’s most popular family recreational destinations, known as the Water Park Capital of the World.

Community History

The Beaver Dam Chamber is housed in the former passenger train Depot in downtown Beaver Dam.

Prior to the arrival of European and American Yankee settlers, Native American peoples, including the Chippewa, Fox, Kickapoo, Sauk, Sioux and Winnebago, lived in the rolling prairie and marshlands that became Beaver Dam. Native Americans hunted and fished the area, and paid a special reverence to a source of natural spring water that they called the “Sacred Springs” found in what is now Swan Park. Periodically there are active archeological sites in the area. In the spring of 1841, Thomas Mackie and his family became the first permanent Yankee settlers to the area, coming from the new community of Fox Lake to the north. The Mackie’s built a log cabin and were soon joined by other settlers. Beavers were abundant along the streams and river, constructing dams to provide their own habitat and food source. The Mackie’s and

other Yankee settlers decided that Beaver Dam would be a fitting name for the new settlement and the river.

makers, wagon makers, carriage makers and cotton mills, as well as the existing flourmill and saw mill.

These early settlers recognized the value of damming the river to use waterpower to run a gristmill and a saw mill, so in 1842 the first in a series of dams was constructed along the river. That year the shallow valley upriver began filling in to create Beaver Dam Lake. By the mid 1850s the community had grown enough that local leaders initiated incorporation as the city of Beaver Dam, in 1856 a city charter was granted. During this period of growth European immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Poland and other nations began to arrive to the area. These immigrants provided much of the workforce for many new industries including breweries, a woolen mill, brick

farming. During this period, dairies and cheese factories began to establish throughout the area. In 1879, Dr. G.E. Swan rediscovered the natural spring once revered by local Indians. Dr. Swan was so sure of the healthful benefits of the alkaline mineral water that he purchased 12 acres around what was known as Ackerman’s Spring, constructed cottages and a large resort hotel for a health spa. Although Dr. Swan’s Vita Park resort lasted less than a decade, outsiders became aware that the city was a nice place to visit in the summer time for fishing, boating and other recreation. Heavy industry arrived in Beaver Dam in the 1890s, including several malleable iron works, such as the Malleable Iron Range Company (Monarch Ranges)

Beaver Dam is proud of its history and is fortunate to have private citizens and civic leaders who have recognized the value of preserving the architectural heritage of the community. A number of outstanding buildings have been preserved and restored throughout the community for use as homes, businesses and public facilities. The 1880 pavilion built for the Vita Park resort has been lovingly restored, and the former resort property is preserved as Swan Park, part of the municipal park system. The 1901 Downtown Train Depot, owned by the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce, is currently being renovated. The city’s first independent library building, the Williams Free Library, was built in 1890 and, today, is maintained as the Dodge County Historical Society Museum. Many private homes, particularly along Park Avenue and surrounding downtown, have been maintained, restored and preserved as residences for over 100 years. Several

downtown Beaver Dam landmarks have also been continuously maintained as businesses since the late 19th Century. As part of a major downtown redevelopment, some properties along and over the Beaver Dam River were razed in 2009, as part of an overall effort to revive downtown and promote the historic architecture of the late 19th Century. The multi-phase project is projected to continue for several years. Hispanic Immigrants are the latest wave of immigrants. They have added to the local culture with authentic Mexican restaurants and a grocery store.

Park Avenue, leading to downtown Beaver Dam, is marked by beautiful Victorian era homes

Century properties, in all shapes and sizes, provides any amateur preservationist or history buff the opportunity to own and preserve a piece of local history. Cape cods, bungalows, ranches and split-level dwellings make up the neighborhoods fanning out from the historic downtown. Beautiful, year-round, one- and two-story homes line the city’s shore along Beaver Dam Lake. Tasteful family and senior

apartment complexes are intermixed with one family and multifamily developments throughout the city. Two new apartment complexes overlook the lake; one brand new and the other a renovation of a historic factory. Condominiums and several assisted living facilities are also available to serve those needs as well. Suburban subdivisions surrounding Beaver Dam reflect the same diversity in modern housing found anywhere in the nation, with comparable price ranges. A Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, one of only

nine prefabricated Wright designed projects ever constructed, is located in a Beaver Dam subdivision and is open for use as a bed & breakfast.

Culture

AND Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre

Beaver Dam Area Arts Association

The mission of the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre is to enhance the lives of men, women and children in the community by presenting them with the enrichment, inspiration and humor of the dramatic arts. BDACT not only provides wonderful, local, live entertainment for the community, it is also an extraordinary local theatrical training ground for youth and adults alike. BDACT has always made excellence in theatrical production a goal, but the organization has also found a “role” for many area residents both on and off stage. Performers, ranging in age from fiveyear-old kindergarteners to adults in their senior years, perform both in BDACT’s own theatre, currently housed in a historic church building downtown, and in the Beaver Dam High School’s modern theatre/auditorium throughout the year for larger productions.

One of Beaver Dam’s most successful homegrown companies, Advanced Products (now part of Burgess-Norton Manufacturing), was founded by Peter Seippel. As part of a family legacy, the Seippel home is leased to the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association for use as the Seippel Homestead & Center for the Arts. Today the BDAAA uses the property as a cultural asset not only for Beaver Dam, but the entire Dodge County region. The center hosts changing special exhibits, art classes and special programs every couple of months throughout the year. The association’s mission, “to encourage and stimulate the promotion of the arts in Dodge County through community involvement, with focus on the visual arts,” is fulfilled every day through activities at the Seippel Center. Dodge County Historical Society The Dodge County Historical Society’s goal is the preservation of the history of Dodge County, with an emphasis on the preservation of the history of Beaver Dam. The society, which is an affiliate of the Wisconsin State Historical Society, was formed in 1938 for the preservation of articles pertaining to the pioneer days and to the early history of Beaver Dam. The first “museum” was located on the second floor of the famous Concert Hall on Front Street in downtown Beaver Dam, in the

room that served, for several years, as the council chamber for city government. As the society’s collection grew, the organization had to expand within the Concert Hall and eventually move to other downtown locations. For a period of over 20 years the society’s museum was housed in the 1901 Downtown Train Depot. In 1985, the city of Beaver Dam began leasing the former Williams Free Library building to the society, where the museum has remained to the present day. The museum features changing seasonal exhibits, plus the “Tribute to Veterans” permanent exhibit, permanent displays of famous native sons and daughters, including actors Brian Donlevy and Fred MacMurray, athlete Maddy Horn, authors Harlowe Hoyt and Raymond Gallun and naturalist/explorer Delia Denning Akeley and the “One Room Schoolhouse” permanent interactive exhibit for youth.

Education

Washington Elementary is one of the neighborhood elementary schools in the Beaver Dam Unified School District.

There is a track record in both the public and private school systems in Beaver Dam of excellence and a strong tradition of community support for education. The Beaver Dam Unified School District provides public school education in the community, while Lutheran and Catholic grade schools and a private college preparatory high school, Wayland Academy, offer a private sector educational alternative. In addition, Beaver Dam is home to one of the three campuses of Moraine Park Technical College, offering a wide variety of two and four year degree courses.

Public Education – Primary & Secondary At the Beaver Dam Unified School District, their goal is to be a school district of excellence, respected for their individualized approach to education, academic rigor and service to all students, parents and community. Their position as a leader in education provides them the opportunity and responsibility to set an example for education in the state and in a manner that is consistent with their core belief: all students will be successful in all academic areas. Most critically, they believe commitment to academic excellence everyday, for every student, is not only their job it is a moral imperative. To that end, they individualize instruction for students. They remove roadblocks to student success and they open advanced curriculum to all students. They provide appropriate rigor to every child while working hand-in-hand with parents and all members of their learning community. Their pursuit of academic excellence extends beyond the traditional school day. Their students learn before and after school, on Saturday, in traditional classrooms, online, on the field, in the gym and around the community.

The Auditorium in Beaver Dam High School is used year-round for educational, entertainment and extra curricular activities.

Worship Original settler Thomas Mackie built a cabin in 1841 in what was to become Beaver Dam. That first structure also became the first house of worship for the community by 1842. Faith has been an integral part of Beaver Dam from the very beginning. Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and others have contributed to the growth of Beaver Dam, not only as immigrant farmers, laborers and business people, but also spiritually. Since then, many other denominations of Christian congregations, along with Muslims, Hindus and Jews (as well as other smaller religious groups) have appeared on our landscape to add to the colorful fabric of our life together. Today, there are many identified religious communities functioning within the city limits of Beaver Dam. Other surrounding rural and village congregations provide religious services for our residents. Besides building houses of worship to praise and thank God for blessings and to share in fellowship, these religious organizations have provided significant support and services for many Beaver Dam residents. Faith-based services have included: support of local food pantries, financial contributions to nonprofit organizations that serve the community, crisis counseling, funeral and bereavement services, marriage counseling and services, programs for youth and adults and for families and seniors, hospital and nursing home visitation, volunteers from within the congregations for many other community organizations and their programs, direct

Business AND

Industry

Animart and its subsidiaries recently celebrated the opening of a new corporate headquarters in the Lakeside Business Park.

Through a proactive program of planned investment and a progressive city government, the local economy has weathered the recent national economic downturn and is poised for its next growth phase. The next decade will be an exciting time of opportunity for business and development in Beaver Dam. Existing mainstays of commerce in the city include Apache Stainless Equipment (a manufacturer of stainless steel equipment for the food industry), Burgess-Norton Manufacturing (formerly Advance Products, a producer of metal parts through a powdered metal stamping

process), Kraft Foods (producers of half of the Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese made in America and producer of other related cheese products), Richelieu Foods (formerly Willow Foods, a producer of deli salads, dips, bagel spreads and entrées) and a Wal-Mart Distribution Center on the city’s far north side. The center is the largest distribution facility of its kind in the state. The center has approximately one million square feet of floor space, employing about 750 people year-round. The community is also home to smaller, specialty manufacturing businesses, including Breuer Metal Craftsmen (producing metal wrought items, hand-

crafted for a wide variety of business, office and retail applications, including hand rails on custom stairways and metal decorations) and Venture Manufacturing Group (a state-of-the-art metal fabricator, serving the retail, material handling, construction, agricultural and military [COCC Registered] sectors). Beginning several decades ago, with the combined efforts of the Beaver Dam Industrial Development Corporation, the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce and local government, city leaders began examining the future of the city and its manufacturing base. In recent years the city

of Beaver Dam has contracted with the Beaver Dam Area Development Corporation to take the community to its next phase of growth. The BDADC, a local nonprofit development corporation, works with city government, the Chamber of Commerce and other local, county and state organizations to invite businesses to expand, relocate or add additional business locations in Beaver Dam. The development

The Beaver Dam Business Park is located just east of U.S. Highway 151, between Industrial Drive and County Highway B. Several significant anchor business developments have already been completed in the park, including Northwoods Paper Converting (converting industrial paper rolls to flat sheets of paper cut to order), Vintage Parts (warehouser/distributor of slow moving or inactive parts for major automotive and other manufacturers), the Beaver Dam offices of MSA Professional Services (consulting, planning and engineering services for municipalities and the private sector) and a variety of office and service businesses. In 2009, the city created the Lakeside Business Park, just north of Industrial Drive and along Highway 33, a half-mile east of Beaver Dam Lake. Cornerstones to this expansion have been the construction of a second facility for the Phoenix Coaters Division of Mayville Engineering Company in Beaver Dam, the new corporate headquarters for Animart and the

brand new facility for ETS UV Technology. The new Phoenix facility is a 303,000square-foot building that opened in summer 2010. The facility houses a new, state-of-the-art E-Coat and Topcoat paint system and more than doubles Phoenix Coaters coating capabilities in the community. Animart is a 30-year-old, homegrown business that serves the agribusiness community, primarily dairy and beef cattle farms, with pharmaceuticals and other industry products. ETS is pioneering UV technology for a variety of recreational and public purposes.

A brand new, 200-plus-acre corporate park is newly under development on the city’s far north side, with Highway 151 for its east border. The park will provide largescale facilities on the property they need for new immediate development and land for the future.

Retail Shopping

Chamber Ambassadors welcome Evenson’s Hallmark Store as a new Chamber member.

Beaver Dam has a wide variety of retail shopping venues, from businesses in the historic downtown, to new retail developments on the city’s edges. Several concentrations of businesses stand out as shopping districts, with clusters of retail stores and shops. In addition, several streets accommodate a mix of both residential and retail business along most of their length. The original commercial business and retail shopping district for the city was downtown. Today this district is bounded roughly by Lincoln Avenue on the east, Mill Street on the south, Madison Street and Beaver Street on the west and Third Street on the north. The heart of this historic district is Front Street, which is the continuation of Park Avenue/Highway 33, coming from the east. The downtown business district is undergoing a revitalization as part of a multi-year, multi-phase

McKinstry’s Home Furnishings in downtown Beaver Dam is one of the oldest family owned businesses in Wisconsin, offering quality furniture and home accessories since 1858

Another cluster of business, with a variety of retail tenants such as a department store with a pharmacy, a grocery store with a bank branch, gas stations, restaurants, lodging facilities, a Walgreen’s and an automobile dealership, can be found at the Highways 151 and 33 (Park Avenue)

interchange, on Beaver Dam’s east side. This concentration of business is adjacent to the family center and ice arena recreational facility and is within two blocks of both the Beaver Dam campus of Moraine Park Technical College and the Beaver Dam High School. It runs west along Park Avenue/Highway 33 to Roosevelt Street. Along N. Spring Street, between Mackie and Main Streets, there is a cluster of retail business that has been built on land that is part of the redevelopment of the former Monarch Range manufacturing plant property. It includes a grocery store, which also houses a bank branch and an independent pharmacy. Other retail businesses in the area include a strip mall with a variety of tenants, a floral shop, an office supply store and a local credit union. The largest concentration of retail shopping today in the city of Beaver Dam is found along N. Spring Street from about Wayland Street north to County Highway B, with the largest cluster of business centered on the intersection of N. Spring Street and Industrial Drive. Businesses along this corridor include: a wide variety of restaurants, lodging, gas stations, office space, strip malls with a variety of tenants, furniture and appliance stores, a bowling alley, auto dealerships, Kohl’s Department

Store, Dunham’s Sporting Goods and a variety of retail stores and gift shops. Brand new “big box” stores and Beaver Dam’s newest retail developments are also found along the County Highway B interchange with Highway 151. They include three auto dealerships, two motorcycle dealerships, a Wal-Mart Super Center, a Menard’s, fast food chains, clothing stores, banks and a variety of retail businesses. A number of restaurants and taverns, auto repair shops, several gas stations, a hardware store and the only marina on Beaver Dam Lake cluster along the southern portion of Madison Street and along County Highway G at the southern tip of Beaver Dam Lake. The southern end of S. Spring Street also hosts a growing number of retail and service businesses including an insurance agency, a kitchen and bath remodeling store, a floor covering showroom and a financial services office. Although there is a concentration of medical offices adjacent to the new Beaver Dam Community Hospital, there are also doctor, dentist and other medical professional offices throughout the city, including many within the retail business clusters already mentioned.

Park Village Shopping Center is one of a half dozen retail store concentrations, featuring both home grown and national franchise retailers.

Agribusiness Agriculture continues to have a substantial impact on the local economy, as it has for generations in Dodge County. Many of the early European immigrants to the area came as farmers, not laborers, looking for land to establish family farms. The Poles, Irish and Germans who came found landscapes familiar to those they left behind in Europe, low, rolling hills of meadows and forest. Although the Wisconsin climate was not as mild as their homelands, they found the earth in the Beaver Dam area fertile and productive. Both cash crops and dairying industry continue to be mainstays of local agribusiness.

The annual Corn Roast has featured locally grown sweet corn for 50 years, highlighting local agribusiness.

are processed in the area for wholesale shipment to distribution facilities and then to retail grocery stores.

A new type of industry has become part of local agribusiness with the development of wind farms both east and west of Beaver Dam.

Dodge County continues to be one of the top counties in Wisconsin in the production of vegetable and specialty crops, with green beans, peas and sweet corn leading the way. Many vegetable crops

Many local dairy farms have been passed down, generation to generation, with some now reaching the sesquicentennial (150 years) mark as family farms. Dodge County can lay claim to nearly 50,000 dairy cows, each producing about 18,000 pounds of milk a year. Total dairy production is about one billion pounds of milk, annually, from Dodge County dairy farms.

The dairy farm tradition has continued to feed the local dairy processing and cheese making businesses. The Kraft Foods, Inc. plant in Beaver Dam, established in 1928, is both the oldest continuously operating Kraft plant in the U.S. and its most technologically advanced cheese producing plant. The plant turns out about 150,000,000 pounds of Kraft’s Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese annually. In addition to major food processors such as Kraft, some local family run cheese factories survive throughout the county. Dodge County’s strong agricultural past led to the Dodge County Fair being heralded as the “Greatest County Fair in America” for many years. The fair was once held on grounds within the city of Beaver Dam, just blocks from downtown. Huge crowds arrived by train from the turn of the last century through the 1930s from Milwaukee, Chicago and other Midwestern cities. While the Dodge County Fair Grounds have moved further east of the city, this annual August event is still a crowd pleaser and showcases the strong agricultural heritage of the Beaver Dam area.

The Midwest Cream Cheese Competition features locally produced cream cheese at the Kraft Plant in Beaver Dam, celebrating Wisconsin’s dairy heritage.
