WELCOME & COMMUNITY OVERVIEW ocated in Palm Beach County, one of Florida’s fastest-growing areas, Boynton Beach is the third-largest city in the county, boasting a high rate of residential growth for residents and future residents of all ages. Boynton Beach remains dedicated to progress and prosperity, while at the same time making strides to preserve its historical landmarks so that generations to come will be able to appreciate the city’s roots. Boynton Beach’s history stretches far back to 1894, when a distinguished former major from the Civil War, Nathan S. Boynton, first experienced the area’s beautiful natural landscapes, sunny skies and warm temperature. Boynton returned home to Port Huron, MI, recruited a number of men and, within one year, made his way back to the coastal area. Boynton and his workmen constructed the Boynton Beach Hotel between 1895 and 1897, and began relocating their families to the newly established town of Boynton Beach.

In its earliest years, the original settlers of Boynton Beach focused on developing the community and farming. The fertile land proved conducive to the growing of various fruits and vegetables, and with the addition of the newly built Florida East Coast Railroad, distributing the crops quickly and efficiently to the rest of the country was made possible.

The city continues to develop and revitalize major public and private areas that continue to enhance the quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. Thanks to the ongoing hard work of government officials, business-oriented professionals and community-minded residents, Boynton Beach is bursting with opportunity and has placed itself among the most attractive places to live, work and visit in southern Florida – and beyond.

TRANSPORTATION & LOCATION s an attractive southern Florida community ideally located along the Atlantic coast, adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway, Boynton Beach is often referred to as America’s “Gateway to the Gulf Stream.” A network of major roadways weaves in and around the area, offering easy access to local and regional destinations. Interstate 95, known as the East Coast’s principal highways, converges in Boynton Beach, with four exits available in town. Florida’s Turnpike, also known as Ronald Reagan Turnpike, travels along the city’s western side, while SR A1A Scenic and Historical Coastal Highway traverses the eastern border, offering incredible and unmatched ocean views. U.S. Route 1 and several other local thoroughfares provide efficient routes of travel in the area.

The city’s coastal location gives businesses and travelers the benefit of water transportation. The Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach is just north of town and noted as a busy deep-water port. As a designated Foreign Trade Zone it is the fourth-busiest container port in the state. In addition to trade the port is also a site for tourism. The Celebration Cruise Line is the official cruise of the Port of Palm Beach and connects to the Bahamas. For those residents or visitors that prefer not to drive, public transportation is readily available throughout Boynton Beach and the surrounding communities. Regional mass transit can be found through the Palm Beach County Palm Tran or the South Florida Commuter Rail, formerly known as the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority. The Palm Beach County Tran, buses run seven days a week, serving more

than 3,400 stops in the area. The South Florida Commuter Rail offers routes through Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade County and Broward County, making sure commuters can get where they need to go. More intercity regional travel is available through Amtrak, which operates out of the West Palm Beach station (the Seaboard Coastline Railroad Passenger Station). Greyhound bus lines, as well as routes along South Florida and Palm Tran, make regular stops at this station too. Commercial air travel is available through three international airports in the region – all of which are reachable via I-95. Palm Beach International Airport is a quick 15minute drive north of Boynton Beach, while a trip south will bring passengers to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in 30 minutes and Miami International Airport in one hour. For general aviation needs, pilots utilize the services of the Lantana Airport at the Palm Beach County Airpark.

RECREATION & GOLF ith an average year-round temperature of 78 degrees, Boynton Beach is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts during every season. There is something for everyone, young and old, to do here. The Parks and Recreation Department at the city of Boynton Beach manages 29 parks, all of which are popular spots for any ages. Easily the largest and most popular playground is Kid’s Kingdom, built by community volunteers, this playground is a constant source and reminder of community pride, boasting a multi-level play area. The Parks and Recreation Department also maintains the Intracoastal Park, celebrating its 10th year, offers a Veteran’s Memorial picnicking areas, a small splash-playground for young ones and breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Nearby Boat Club Park offers

boaters the opportunity to launch and navigate in and out of the Boynton Inlet much easier thanks to the recent channel dredging and highly visible channel markers. The park also boasts 75 boat trailer parking spaces, renovated launching ramps and additional loading docks. This boat launch provides easy access for everyone with a boat, making fishing easy.

For those who don’t own a boat, driftfishing charters are available three times a day and charter-fishing boats depart daily from the Sea Mist Marina and Palm Beach Yacht Club. As the closest community to the Gulf Stream, Boynton Beach not only offers world-class deep-sea fishing, but also has

some of the most exciting underwater sites in Florida, if not the world. Unlike many places in the world today, the local underwater landscape is lush, healthy and full of marine life in every shape, size and color imaginable. For those that prefer to stay inside, the Parks and Recreation Department maintains eight recreation centers including the Art Center; Tennis Center, which host’s 20-plus courts; Boynton Woman’s Club; Senior Center and several other sites and multi-purpose rooms for rental, fitness space and plenty of outdoor facilities such as pavilions and playgrounds. Boynton Beach is also home to the County’s Caloosa Park, West Boynton

Park and Recreation Center and Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands, which offers a variety of educational and recreation opportunities for the public and well-preserved habitat for area wildlife. Outdoor and nature enthusiasts can take advantage of the Arthur R. Marshall-Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Nature Preserve, located in the most robust part of the Everglades. This 221-square-mile refuge is one of three huge water retention areas accounting for much of the Everglades outside the national park. The area is managed less to protect natural resources. There is good wildlife viewing year-round, fishing for bass and panfish and a five-mile canoe trail.

Also playing a large role in recreation in Boynton Beach is the modern DeVosBlum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach. Since opening in December of 2000 the YMCA has offered and continues to offer a wide range of programs to help the entire family enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle. The facility includes two indoor pools complete with a water slide, a large gymnasium, fitness center, fitness studios, locker rooms, childcare and a café area.

cademic excellence and encouraging personal growth are important aspects of life in Boynton Beach. The School District of Palm Beach County is comprised of 186 schools and enrolls over 170,000 students annually, making it the fifth-largest school district in the state and the 11th-largest in the nation.

A Boynton Beach City Library Lifelong learning extends beyond the schools and into the community, thanks to the availability of the modern Boynton Beach City Library. In recent years, the library has experienced a transformation, more than doubling in size. A 35,166-square-foot twostory addition opened in March 2008, followed by a complete overhaul of the original 27,698-square-foot space, which opened the following March (2009).

Of the 186 schools in the district, 32 are designated Charter schools. Approximately 32,000 students participate in more than 160 magnet and choice school programs, which are available through 58 elementary, middle and high schools. Alternative learning environments, special education for exceptional students and community education programs are available through the district. The School District of Palm Beach County is not just one of the largest, but it is also one of the finest. It has consistently earned an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Aâ&#x20AC;? rating from the Florida Department of Education based on student performance on the FCAT.

Newsweek magazine also named several schools in the district on their list of Top U.S. High Schools.

Alternatives to the public school district are widely available through numerous private and parochial institutions. The area also hosts a number of childcare and early childhood learning centers, and is in close proximity to several colleges, universities and technical schools in the surrounding communities of Boca Raton, Lake Worth and West Palm Beach.

he Greater Boynton Beach Sister Cities Committee, Inc. was established in 2003 as an affiliate of Sister Cities International, which promotes sustainable development, youth involvement, cultural understanding and humanitarian assistance between communities.

Working with the City of Boynton Beach, its Arts Commission and Education and Youth Advisory Board and the Greater Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce, the focus this year is on youth involvement and economic development in keeping with Sister Cities Internationals’ new motto: “Think Globally. Thrive Locally.”

The coalition was founded in 1981 and chartered as a not-for-profit organization in 1982. Representing over

Boynton Beach currently has two Sister Cities: Qufu, China, since September of 2001, and Les Cayes, Haiti, since December of 2011. The Young Artists/Young Authors Showcase encourage middle and high school youth of these three cities to interpret various themes through art and writing. Past programs have included an electronic penpal program between students in Boynton Beach and Qufu and, in partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation, a gift of 200 wheelchairs to handicapped citizens in Qufu.

People who drive through West Boynton often notice the unusual beauty of the area and the lack of urban sprawl and attractive separations of commercial properties from residential areas. Since its founding, COBWRA has been a voice for its residents with developers, elected officials, government agencies, and nearby municipalities. If the west Boynton area had a government, COBWRA would be that government. COBWRA has played a key role in guiding growth in the unincorporated neighborhoods of western Boynton Beach for more than 30 years. Today COBWRA continues to play a leading role in the area’s planning and development process.
