Brown County Muse um of Hi stor y The Brown County Museum (formerly the old Brown County Jail) is located near the Brown County Court House and resembles an ancient European castle in its design. It was built in 1902 by English-born stone mason William F. Morton. The jail's capacity was designed to house 75 inmate, but that capacity was often exceeded during the days of Camp Bowie. The building has 4 stories with the third floor containing a trap door and lever for executions.Museum maintains an extensive collection of history from Brown County, including a Camp Bowie WWII section with artifacts, photos, and POW Camp history. nhabited by the Comanches of the Penateka band in the 19th century, Brown County has experienced some amazing growth since those early days. The county is named for Capt. Henry Stevenson Brown, a company commander in the battle of Velasco, a delegate to the Convention of 1832, and one of the first Anglo-Americans in the area. The county was formed on the western frontier in 1856 from Comanche and Travis counties and organized in 1858, with Brownwood designated as the county seat; the town was also awarded the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first post office that year. The county developed slowly between its founding and the 1870s, primarily because conditions were not secure for settlement until the late 1870s or early 1880s, as settlers were harassed by Indians and white predators for 20 years after the county was formed.

The new railroad connections helped the area to prosper, since the absence of railroad facilities in southern Eastland and Callahan counties led farmers from those areas to Brown County to do their marketing. The countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s agricultural economy boomed during the first 10 years of the 20th century, primarily because of a rapid expansion of cotton culture. In 1908, the peak year for cotton in the county, 43,574 bales were ginned, and in 1910, county farmers planted almost 83,000 acres in to cotton. By this time, fruits and pecans had also become an important part of the local agricultural economy. The boll weevil appeared in the county about this time, however, and production of cotton quickly declined. Oil was first discovered in Brown County in 1879 prompting the drilling of oil in the area, but the first commercial production came in 1917. Hundreds of oil wells were in production over the next several years. In 1928, a new school district, named for Walter U. Early, an attorney who donated land for several school buildings was formed on the site, and the Anderson, Ricker, Delaware and Jenkin Spring schools consolidated marking the beginning of the city of Early.

Though increasing numbers of farmers moved into the area in the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s, the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy was dominated by cattle ranching throughout most of the 19th century. Development of the county was accelerated in the 1890s and early 1900s when two railroads built tracks into the area, providing a stimulus to area farmers and helping maintain an atmosphere favorable to experiments in crop diversification.

The Great Depression of the 1930s ended the oil boom, as prices dropped and production fell off. The agricultural sector was also hammered, dwindling the number of farms. State and federal programs improved conditions somewhat during this time as well as the construction of a dam during the early 1930s. The dam, which was completed in 1932, created Lake Brownwood, the water source and recreational asset to most of the county. It was predicted that several years of normal rainfall would be required to fill the lake behind the dam, but an almost unprecedented storm in July 1932 filled it in six hours. The beginning of America’s involvement in World War II helped to resurrect the local economy. Between 1941 and 1943, military needs led to the construction of Camp Bowie, an infantry and cavalry training center that covered 122,000 acres south of Brownwood and cost $35 million to build. The facility affected the county both socially and economically; over 10,000 construction workers were hired to build the camp, and eventually 30,000 troops were assigned there; German

prisoners of war were also confined there. The influx of people into the county caused a housing shortage in greater Brownwood and around the camp that lasted through the war despite the army’s construction of a 200-unit housing project. The war also helped to revive the local oil industry; in 1944 Brown County lands produced more than 400,000 barrels of crude. The industry fully revived after the end of World War II, when large fields were discovered at greater depths, and water flooding of old fields was begun. After the war, Camp Bowie closed, but business and civic leaders saw this as an opportunity for growth and purchased hundreds of acres of the abandoned military camp to use for industrial development. Through the efforts of the Brownwood Industrial Foundation, businesses such as the 3M Company, Superior Essex, Kohler and other manufacturing industries are now located in the Camp Bowie industrial area and maintain a strong economic base for the community.

We have six museums, including the Martin and Francis Lehnis Railroad Museum across from the Depot Plaza, The Rufus F. Hardin Museum, as well as the Brown County Museum of History and the

Firearms Museum of Texas, which are housed in the 1902 jail house resembling a European castle. Each tells the story of Texas and Brown County. The Lehnis Railroad Museum showcases model trains and a large collection of railway artifacts, as well as miniature train rides. The Gordon Wood Hall of Champions showcases the “winningest” high school football coach, Gordon Wood. The Hall of Champions holds artifacts from Coach Wood’s honorable career and highlights outstanding players and support coaching staff. In the community of Blanket, just north of Early, you will find the Blanket Historical Museum that not only has many artifacts from Blanket but is also a research center for family histories. The Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center is one of the area’s most popular attractions. Open during the summer months, key features of the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center include a slide tower with slide, water geysers, a tot slide, coolbrellas, a pavilion, four lap lanes, a diving board, zero entry beach, a current channel and much more. There is also a concession stand with light snacks, bath house and small lockers available for rent. The new facility is located directly across the street from Gordon Wood Stadium. Brownwood Country Club is a private club offering numerous opportunities for a great day at the club with family and friends. ith over 50 special events each year ranging from the Annual Brown County Rodeo and Parade to the Brownwood Reunion Celebration, Christmas Under the Stars Festival and Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit, we have the culture and entertainment you are looking for. The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit features artists from around the state with over 300 exceptional quality exhibits on display at the Depot Complex. Demonstrations are conducted throughout the week using a variety of media. The Brownwood Reunion Celebration covers a large part of the Downtown with tents, booths, stages and 23 city blocks filled with continuous live music, nationally known entertainment and activities for children of all ages. It was the first “virtual reunion” in the world. Each year, approximately 16,000 people attend and 1,500+ “handson” volunteers create the Brownwood Reunion Celebration. Heart of Texas Quilt Show, sponsored by the Brownwood Quilters Guild, showcases beautifully handcrafted quilts as well as a variety of quilting affiliated vendors inside the Brownwood Coliseum. The Heartland Rod Run fills Riverside Park with over 400 hot rods, vendors, spectators and competitions. The Heartland Cruisers put this incredible car show together for everyone to enjoy free of charge. Juneteenth Celebration is a celebration of freedom for all cultures to participate in. Children’s activities, live entertainment, food and the annual baseball game are only the beginning of a fun filled weekend. Brown County Rodeo, Parade and Dance has been an annual event for over 50 years. The Brown County Fair Association has put on the rodeo with lots of excitement, bullriders, barrel racers, steer wrestlers and rodeo clowns. Saturday morning, spectators line the streets to watch as the parade makes its way through downtown Brownwood, and then they fill the Coliseum in the evening to dance the night away!

Christmas Under the Stars Festival is a delightful way to kick off the holiday season. A few of the things your family can enjoy include arts and crafts vendors, competitions, activities and, of course, SANTA! Enjoy hot chocolate while listening to live music or storytelling, then showcase your hidden talent during Christmas Karaoke. Saturday evening, warm up by the fire after Saturday morning’s brisk run in the Santa’s Sleigh 5K. Ice Skating Under the Stars brings the thrill of Ice Skating to Central Texas! The synthetic ice has the feel of a real frozen pond and offers lots of excitement. Brownwood’s Lyric Theatre sponsors several events throughout the year. Children’s shows are produced for kids and performed by adults. The community musical is a high quality theatre event and includes a live orchestra, professional choreography and directing. Professional theatre productions are performed and directed by professional artists including musical and non-musical performances. A Children’s Theatre Camp is also held annually. Each year, the Community Choir sings the great Christmas tradition, Handel’s Messiah. Seats fill quickly as these productions are full of local talent delivering spectacular performances. Brownwood Community Concert Association hosts a concert series beginning each fall that carries into the late spring. These concerts are held in the Victory Life Auditorium with open seating. Various Annual Events include dinner theatre productions and several arts and crafts fairs held throughout the year. Howard Payne Homecoming brings alumni home for a weekend full of activities for the whole family. Trick or Treat Trail provides a safe, fun atmosphere for kiddos to participate in games, a costume contest, a hay maze and lots of fun activities offered by area businesses at no cost to the public.

Early Pioneer Days brings to life the days of the pioneer families that lived in the area. Demonstrations of yarn spinning, goat milking, dutch oven cooking and blacksmithing educate the audience on trades of the past while everyone has the opportunity to participate in games like the egg toss, three legged races and sack races. Wagon rides, campfires and storytelling are also among the many activities to enjoy. Saturday night’s schedule includes a street dance under the stars, and Sunday morning wraps up the weekend with an old time pioneer camp meeting and breakfast.

Organizations like the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation, Early Economic Development Corporation, Brownwood Industrial Foundation, and the Small Business Development Center offer a variety of resources and service to help local businesses. The Brownwood and Early Economic Development Corporations are all about business growth. The EDC provides a variety of assistance to business prospects. Each package is customized to fit the needs of the prospects, to benefit the community and to enhance the economic wellbeing of the citizens of Brown County. Central Texas Veterans Health Care System — Brownwood Campus The Brownwood VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), part of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, provides area Veterans access to a variety of health care services. Services available to eligible Veterans include primary care, women’s health, mental health, laboratory and X-ray. he City of Brownwood operates under the city manager/city council form of government which is led by an elected mayor and five city council members who are elected at large from single-member wards. The mayor and council members hold their office for a term of four years each. The city manager oversees the day-to-day operation of the city and is hired by the council. The Law Enforcement Center is the home of the Brownwood Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff ’s Office. The Brownwood Police Department is led by an appointed police chief who in turn appoints an assistant police chief. The Brownwood Fire Department is a full-time paid department with two stations in Brownwood. The department is led by the appointed fire chief with investigations led by the fire marshal. The City of Early government consists of an elected mayor and five city councilmembers who are elected at large and serve two-year staggered terms. The office of the city administrator oversees the daily operation of the city.

Brown County is governed by the Commissioner’s Court consisting of the Brown County Judge and the four-member County Commissioners elected from each precinct. Their offices are located at the Brown County Courthouse along with the 35th District Court, the office of the County Attorney, and office of the District Attorney, County Treasurer, four Justices of the Peace (one from each precinct), the County Clerk’s office and the District Clerk’s office.
