An increasingly thriving community, the village of Buffalo Grove has transformed into one of the finest areas in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. Just 30 miles outside of downtown Chicago, the community straddles both Cook and Lake counties and is part of Chicagoland’s extensive transportation network, which includes an intricate web of highways, international airports and convenient and affordable public transit alternatives. This asset of location offers residents the best of two worlds – ready access to beautiful downtown Chicago, while providing all the luxuries of a suburban, open-spaced, green community. Buffalo Grove has come a long way since its first settlers arrived around 1834. The area first welcomed a group of New Englanders, who, within a few years, sold their land to German immigrants fleeing their homeland in search of fertile, affordable land in America. These settlers established a collection of farms and formed a tight-knit community centered around religion and education. The settlement remained small and fairly undeveloped, with farms supplying much of the Chicago area with an array of fresh dairy products throughout the early and mid-1900s. It was not until 1957 that the community really began to take shape. It was in this year that local builder Al Frank purchased 100 acres of farmland from the descendants of early settler Melchoir Raupp and embarked on the construction of the community’s first subdivision. One year later, on March 7, 1958, the village of Buffalo Grove was incorporated, sparking a surge of new developers in the area. The village grew from 164 residents to nearly 1,500 in a relatively short amount of time. At the same time, business began to expand. The additions of the Buffalo Grove Commerce Center,

Corporate Grove Industrial Park and the Buffalo Grove Business Park gave rise to a progressive business sector that still holds strong to this day. Today, Buffalo Grove boasts a population of approximately 41,500 who enjoy its outstandingly high standard of life characterized by a mix of suburban living with a little bit of country charm. Buffalo Grove’s desirability continues to draw in prospective residents and businesses interested in relocation and/or expansion. s the cry for sustainability grows, more and more individuals, businesses, nonprofit groups and governing bodies have begun investing in Earthfriendly, green living practices and programs. Conserving energy, lowering harmful chemical emissions into our environment and ultimately improving the air quality are significant issues facing the world – and the village of Buffalo Grove is no exception. As a result of this green movement, numerous initiatives have been put into place throughout the Buffalo Grove community with a mission to achieve and maintain an environmentally friendly and sustainable life for generations to come.

The Village of Buffalo Grove Leads the Way in Sustainable Living & Business Practices The village of Buffalo Grove has taken a strong stance on promoting active stewardship in its community. In response to the need for enhanced environmental-based initiatives, it created the Environmental Committee—a dedicated group of leaders and citizens who have come together to develop and execute numerous environmentally-friendly policies and programming. The majority of these initiatives are promoted in conjunction with various local, regional and statewide partners. The village follows the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Greenest Region Compact of Metropolitan Chicago, is a member of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) and is a part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense and WasteWise programs. It also works closely with the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) on a rewards program for ComEd clients who implement an energy-saving plan in their household and is active in the Clean Air Counts (CAC) initiative. In spring 2011, the village earned a Clean Air Community Platinumlevel designation for its commitment to improving air quality in the Chicago metro area.

efficiency through municipal electric aggregation; advocating for the use of alternative transportation, such as public transit and bicycling; and promoting various local outreach and education programs and events. In addition, the village of Buffalo Grove has invested greatly in the implementation of energy-saving products on its properties. It has consolidated multiple hardware servers in order to save 120 kilowatt hours each day; it continues to pursue energy star ratings for all new equipment; it utilizes compact fluorescent lighting and low or zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in its cleaning products and paints; it is currently experimenting with LED and induction lighting on exterior fixtures; and it has incorporated an energy power-saving policy in the office in order to reduce electrical consumption. The Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team (BG EAT): It’s a Group Effort In the summer of 2008, local environmental activist Jeff Weiss approached the Buffalo Grove Park District and the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove with an idea to launch a floating island on Green Lake. This floating island would filter out pollutants, thus improving water quality and providing a habitat for both wildlife and wetland plant life. The island was launched that August by an energized group of citizens. Impressed by the event’s success and support, Jeff’s wife, Martha, then a park district commissioner, suggested implementing similar events in the community. From there, the idea for the Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team (BG EAT) surfaced. Since its first meeting in February 2009, the BG EAT has grown from 11 people to nearly 100 members, with a core group of 20 to 25 active people. The team, in conjunction with the village of Buffalo Grove and other community organizations, have sponsored—and continue to

Among the many examples include a recycling program that encompasses both curb-side recycling and drop-off recycling at village Hall for items such as batteries, holiday lights, cell phones and digital cameras; the sale of Waste Management Bagster Bags, an energy-saving idea for those with largerthan-normal waste disposal needs; encouraging energy

sponsor—a number of events and initiatives in town, including three electronics recycling events; bike events that have raised 150+ bikes for the Working Bikes cooperative; habitat restoration and maintenance work at Mike Rylko Community Park; clean-up days along Deerfield Parkway as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program; and a festival-wide recycling program and informational booth at Buffalo Grove Days and other events. In addition, the BG EAT had a hand in initiating the energy aggregation initiative on the March 2012 ballot and creating the new Lost Prairie Exhibit at the Raupp Museum, which ran between April 1 and June 30, 2012. The exhibit provided information on Buffalo Grove’s unique, unspoiled remnant of prairie.

The BG EAT continues to expand its influence in the community in 2012 through the addition of “Green Fest,” an environmental fair held on June 24; the creation of the Buffalo Creek Clean Water Parntership, a watershed management group; and the proposed development of a watershed-based plan for the entire watershed, which drains portions of 10 communities—from Lake Zurich to Wheeling. Individuals Helping the Environment at Home & in the Community While there is strength in numbers, there are also many things one individual can do to help the environment. From recycling pop cans to switching from plastic baggies to reusable containers for meals at work, sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. A big advocate for green living and sustainability is Buffalo Grove resident and businesswoman Kristi Smith. Kristi said she has always lived an environmentally-conscious lifestyle, implementing various green practices into her daily routine and even doing some humanitarian work in Mexico. “My friends and neighbors started off thinking that I was pretty strange. I used to be the ‘crazy cloth bag lady’ at the grocery store 10 years ago, and now [using cloth bags] has become mainstream,” she noted. In addition to using cloth grocery bags, Kristi and her husband installed small solar panels in the backyard as a supplemental power source, practice collecting rainwater in barrels for watering plants and invest time in growing a large amount of organic vegetables from seed during the summer to be frozen, dehydrated or put into a root cellar to the last through the winter. Each drive hybrid cars and, in early 2012, Kristi, who owns her own business consulting firm, decided to close her office and send everyone to work from home. “This saves a lot of car exhaust from commuting, as well as the extra electricity and heat,” she said. It’s not difficult to begin living greener, and according to Kristi Smith, every little bit counts. “Small investments and conscious actions contribute to an overall path towards greener living.” Plus, acting as an eco-conscious consumer can save money—and in today’s world, that’s something we should all be excited about.

Stevenson High School Achieves

LEED Gold-Level Certification erving as a model for green living and sustainability in the education sector is Adlai E. Stevenson High School, which has been committed to reducing the school’s environmental impact for well over a decade.

SHS earned the Energy Star Award from the Environmental Protection Agency back in 2001, becoming the second school district in Illinois to attain this honor. Faculty, staff and students have been instrumental in encouraging recycling and other green initiatives at the high school for many years, but it was in 2007 that the school’s dedication to environmental consciousness escalated with the establishment of the Green Committee. Since its inception, the 40member committee has worked to improve recycling management on campus, encourage smarter purchasing decisions (such as using recycled paper products), install green roofs, replace non-ecofriendly systems with more efficient products and more. The Green Committee also teamed up with Siemens (an international integrated technology company) to develop a broad operational plan to reduce water consumption, electricity and natural gas uses during non-school hours. This plan has resulted in $100,000 in annual energy savings, a seven percent reduction in electricity use, a five percent reduction in natural gas consumption and an overall increase in indoor environmental quality. Because of these environmentally-friendly measures, SHS became the first public high school in the U.S. to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)® gold-level certification for existing buildings. This constitutes the second-highest level in the four-tiered LEED rating system and is an outstanding achievement for any school, business or organization. “Sustainability is a journey that Stevenson has only just begun,” said Mark Michelini, assistant superintendent for business. “The truly rewarding part of the LEED Gold Certification was the work of over 600 students, dozens of faculty members and the support of the Board of Education, and the entire Stevenson Community coming together to achieve and be recognized on a national level.” To continue on the path of sustainability, SHS recently hired Cannon Design to serve as its environmental consultant. eginning in 1975, the Buffalo Grove Montessori School has a long history of providing distinctive education to young children. A true partnership of parents, staff, alumni and community, BGMS offers opportunities for all to participate in the program. Accredited by the American Montessori Society, BGMS offers programs for children six weeks to six years, with both full- and part-time options. All classrooms are led by experienced and qualified Montessori teachers who are dedicated to the loving care and development of their students. Each day our children enter beautifully-designed environments filled with materials that help children develop confidence, independence and concentration through active participation and hands-on learning. BGMS provides a multi-age setting for threeto six-year-old students, which promotes a “family style” community giving children the opportunity to learn at their own pace, as well as develop the leadership qualities necessary for academic success and personal growth. In addition to our commitment to learning, BGMS is a great place for families. True believers in working with parents to develop happy, healthy, inquisitive children, we provide families with ongoing opportunities for involvement including parent development seminars, parenting forums, outings, parties and classroom participation. We encourage continued involvement by our alumni, many who have returned as summer camp assistants, swim instructors or to teach special art or dance programs. Some members of our current teaching staff began their BGMS experience as students. We are a second-generation school who now serves the children of our former students. Each year BGMS hosts several family and alumni social events. Our family events are well-attended and enjoyed by all. Our annual Valentine’s Ball includes more than 300 friends, young and old, for an evening of dancing, gathering and family fun.

We serve families from all over the world. We welcome and enjoy the diversity within our student body. In celebration of our global community we are hosting a multicultural fair this spring. The event will take our families on a trip around the world exploring each of the seven continents. From traditional clothing, to foods, to discovering what animals thrive in each environment, we are excited to share all of our cultures and traditions. BGMS is a year-round program and the fun continues all-yearround. Each summer the children participate in “special” summer themes and activities, which include field trips, swimming lessons (taught by our staff ) and events such as the BGMS Olympics. Our summer program includes a special “camp” group of graduates from past years who return to continue their Montessori experience. This group also has opportunities to participate in neighborhood bike hikes, rollerblading, swimming and cooking. The summer camp program finishes with our annual camper family party, which includes special theme programs, camper performances and pizza for all. love for singing and entertaining brought together the Buffalo Grove Singers, a part of the national awardwinning Buffalo Grove Park District Performing Arts program. Since its inaugural season, the ensemble has grown to approximately 75 singers from the greater Buffalo Grove area and today includes the BG Singers Encore! traveling ensemble.

Encore! is a 30-member branch of the BG Singers that performs throughout the Chicagoland area, delighting audiences during the BG Singers’ offseason and around the Christmas holidays. In 2011, the singing troupe was presented with a unique opportunity—to participate in a national singing competition focused on independent vocal groups, choirs, choruses, glee clubs, gospel singers and more. Hosted by Developers Diversified Realty

Corporation (DDR), the nationwide Sing! competition was held online and on-site at a dozen DDR-owned shopping centers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including Deer Park Town Center. Encore! cruised through the competition, wowing online voters with their studio-recorded version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in the first round and moving the audience and judges with Kevin Briody’s “Be Still” in the semifinal round. The group’s live semifinal performance, which put them in the final three, was subsequently posted online, where a popular vote determined the winner. The online voters were just as impressed with Encore!’s performance, placing the group at the top of the pack in the Deer Park Town Center Sing! competition. Encore! then went on to compete with the other national finalists and ultimately took the top national prize, which was announced to the public November 15, 2011. When asked what gave Encore! an edge over the other competitors, Encore! Coordinator Bruce Bohrer remarked, “We obviously sounded good, but, just as important, is our enjoyment for performance. The enjoyment and fulfillment we get from singing really permeates throughout the audience during our performances.”

“There really aren’t a whole lot of competitions out there for adult choruses, so this was a pretty unique opportunity; a new experience for us,” said Bohrer. “And as a result of Channel 2 News’ coverage of our group preparing for the competition, we were invited to sing Christmas carols at their studios during the morning news—a very fun perk.” BG Singers Encore! performs at a variety of forums in the greater Buffalo Grove area—from corporate and library events to private parties and summer festivals. Plus, the group garnered much attention in the Chicagoland area thanks to the coverage by Channel 2 News.

ince 1975, the Buffalo Grove High School Expressions mixedcompetition show choir has been growing and evolving with the times. According to the current Director of Vocal Music Debora Utley, “The show choir genre on the whole has grown and changed quite a lot. From its humble beginnings, show choir has grown into fullscale productions with live bands, backdrops of LED lighting and dry-ice smoke effects, as well as gorgeous costuming—sometimes three or four costumes are incorporated into each 17-minute show!”

But one thing that has not changed is the team’s dedication to performance excellence. “The students and families that are involved with this organization are simply incredible, putting in countless hours to make each year special and magical,” said Utley. “Our students work so hard and want to work hard—they really have a strong desire to achieve excellence.” That commitment has definitely paid off, as the Expressions have garnered some prestigious awards in recent times. In fact, in the last four years, the team has only placed first or second at every competition. In 2011, the Expressions received two first runner-up awards and grand champion awards at both the 2011 DeKalb (IN) Show Choir Invitational Competition and the 2011 Nashville Show Choir Nationals Competition. 2012 has shaped up to be just as good. The Expressions brought home the first runner-up award at their first competition, the 2012 Mt. Zion Competition, and grand champion ranking at both the 2012 DeKalb Show Choir Invitational Competition and the 2012 Chicagoland Showcase Competition. In addition, the Expressions’ band, vocals, choreography and soloists have also earned high marks at each competition. In total, the BGHS Expressions are composed of 38 singers/dancers, from freshmen through seniors, nine student band members and four student crew members. Leading the mixed-competition show choir is accompanist Jeannie Workman, a part of BGHS for more than 15 years; Band Director Bryan Itzkowitz, a former Expressions member and BGHS alum; freelance choreographer Randy Sage, also a BGHS alum; and Director of Vocal Music Debora Utley, who has been conducting the Expressions since 2007. The team also benefits from the support of retired founder Linda McEachran Southard and a great administration. In one season, the Expressions perform three local shows, including the annual BIG SHOW in May, a fall show in September and another in November as part of Cabaret Night, the group’s fundraiser that also includes a large meal and a silent and live auction. In addition, the Expressions compete in three to four competitions each year, on both the regional and national levels. ne of the most uniquely creative, cultural gems of the Buffalo Grove community is Kingswood United Methodist Church’s Glory Fingers Creative Ministry Team, created by Director Sheri Brubeck. While completing a certificate program in children’s ministry at Children’s Ministries University, Brubeck fell in love with the art of puppetry. In 1994, she formed the Glory Fingers Puppet Ministry at Kingswood UMC with a group of six youth and adults. Today, Glory Fingers has tripled in size, boasting a

team of 18 active participants, which includes 7th-12th grade youth and adult volunteers. “We have grown from a simple, small, amateur stage and cassette recorder to a full professional stage with lighting and sound production,” explained Brubeck. “We have added new creative arts techniques and even created some of our own.” Glory Fingers offers an outstanding outlet for youth to participate in and further their faith outside of the church. Prior to becoming an established member of the group, each participant is required to attend a six-week puppetry training course. Members of the team devote two hours each week to practice their puppetry skills and perfect their performances, which are free of charge (though a “love offering” is appreciated). And these performances are more than just puppets. In addition to puppetry, Glory Fingers presentations feature blacklighting,

Various events and services throughout the year provide an arena for area religious institutions to convene, give thanks and help those in need. One notable event is the Annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council (a not-for-profit organization comprised of eight churches and synagogues in the Buffalo Grove, Wheeling and Long Grove area). Each November (the Sunday before Thanksgiving), more than 800 community members attend the holiday service. This wonderful affair invites community members of all religions to assemble under one roof and celebrate the true meaning behind Thanksgiving. The service features readings from both Christian and Jewish clergy and entertainment provided by various choirs, bands, bell choirs and more. While the event is free of cost, guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable foods to help stock the shelves of three local food pantries. The year 2012 marks the event’s 22nd year in operation. The Annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is alternately hosted at the Congregation Beth Am, one of Buffalo Grove’s largest synagogues, and St. Mary’s Church, an institution that has been a part of Buffalo Grove for more than 150 years. ecognizing the challenges faced by disabled returning war veterans, the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA) set to work on providing a fitness and wellness program to better serve wounded, ill or injured vets and their dependents. In 2010, thanks to a collaboration with the Addison Park Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club Fitness, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the National Center on Physical Activity & Disability and the U.S. Paralympics, the Healthy Minds, Health Bodies program was created. Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies provides qualified veterans and a friend or family member a free, oneyear fitness center membership at participating facilities. Included in the membership are personal training sessions, post-rehabilitative exercise materials for home use, expert advice from trained staff at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and monthly social events that offer participants a chance to meet and form new relationships with former brothers- and sisters-in-arms.

In 2012, NEDSRA was presented with the annual Illinois Park & Recreation Outstanding Program Award for Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies. NEDSRA provides training workshops for personal trainers looking to complete Certified Inclusive Fitness Training (CIFT). CIFT provides personal trainers the necessary tools to support people enduring an assortment of conditions, including loss of limbs, spinal cord and head/brain trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress

Disorder (PTSD). These biannual training sessions are free and open to all personal trainers. Since its establishment, NEDSRA has trained more than 100 in-state and out-of-state personal trainers. program at the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center. This unique program is available to a limited number of participants and is tailored to suit each individual need. Buffalo Grove Park District Seniors The Buffalo Grove Park District Seniors are among the most active in the community, participating in a yearround directory of activities for a small $20 annual resident membership fee (it’s $26 for nonresidents). hen it comes to public safety, the village of Buffalo Grove Fire Department agrees that prevention is the best protection. As a way to open the lines of communication between the fire department and the community it services, the village has established the Citizens Fire Academy—a 12-week program designed to keep citizens informed of both the fire department’s important role in the village and how citizens can help keep our community safe.

The Citizens Fire Academy meets for three hours one evening a week for 12 weeks. Through the academy, participants receive structured training in 11 different of topics—from CPR and Emergency Medical Response to fire prevention, auto extrication and communications. Each topic is presented by personnel specialized in that particular subject area. The program ends with a live burning session, which exposes participants to the conditions faced during a fire. To date, this valuable outreach program has graduated nearly 200 citizens. n November 17, 2011, the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Buffalo Grove Bank & Trust, presented its first annual Heart of Buffalo Grove Awards Dinner at the beautiful Arboretum Club. The Chamber created the Heart of Buffalo Grove Awards to recognize the many outstanding community members who make a difference in Buffalo Grove. Included are seven categoriesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; Above & Beyond, Business Philanthropy, Community Volunteer, Environmentally Friendly, Senior Volunteer, Teach & Inspire and Youth Volunteer (which had two recipients in 2011). Linda Rosen Linda Rosen serves as the president of the Buffalo Grove Arts Commission where she works tirelessly to enhance the Arts in Buffalo Grove. The commission is responsible for and oversees the Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival, the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band and its offshoot, the Jazz Band, and several public art projects. Linda is the director of the BG Singers and it’s ensemble, Encore! Linda previously chaired the Buffalo Grove Park District Performing Arts Council and has sat on many focus groups for the community.

Marilyn Wagner The Best Salon & Spa Marilyn Wagner and husband, Phil, have been the owners of The Best Salon & Spa for nearly 30 years. Marilyn has never said ‘”no” to fundraising efforts in the community. She has annually donated approximately $10,000 in gift certificates to various charity and community events. She has helped to raise funds at the salon for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the ALS Foundation, hosted Haircuts for the Unemployed, assists with Saint Mary Parish’s Fashion Show and is a member of the Lady Lifesavers, a group of women that annually participate in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, which, over the past six years, have raised over $300,000 for breast cancer research. Nancy Winter has an impressive resume of volunteer work within the community. She served on the Buffalo Grove High School Parent Association as president for three years and was the Girls’ Golf Liaison to the Booster Club and a member of the Parent Advisory Council. She also served as PTO Treasurer at the Cooper PTO. Nancy served on the village of Buffalo Grove 50th Anniversary Committee, played in the Buddy Baseball game during Buffalo Grove Days and is a member the village’s CERT team and EMA. She is on the Alumni Board for the College of Lake County where she co-chairs the Activities/Events Committee, which hosts the Alumni Gala and the Annual Golf Benefit and much more.

Calli is a member of the Buffalo Grove Police Department’s Volunteer Program. She spends a great deal of time driving department transmittals to various court buildings several times each month. She also volunteers for various programs and activities for the department’s Crime Prevention Division. Besides her ‘police work,’ Calli is a member of the CERT Team, the BG Days Committee, serves as a Director of the Buffalo Grove Friends of the Parks Foundation and is a member of St. Mary’s Finance Committee. She also volunteers time at the Kingswood Methodist Church PADS Program and in their Food pantry, as well as volunteering at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Jeff Weiss Jeff Weiss is the founder of the Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team (BG EAT),which assists the Buffalo Grove Park District in protecting its nature areas and removing trash and invasive plant species. He has also organized road clean-ups, electronic recycling days, a bicycle collection program and created exhibits on recycling and energy conservation. Jeff also volunteers at many of the area forest preserves, is a committee member for Chicago Cares, serves at a Waukegan soup kitchen and is a merit badge counselor for Boy Scout Troop 140. Jeff is a longtime resident of Buffalo Grove with his wife, Martha, and children Emily, Claire, Vincent and Paul. He is the Land Management Coordinator for the Emily Oaks Nature Center within the Skokie Park District. Jeff has also served as a Commissioner for the Buffalo Grove Park District. Dean Klassman Dean Klassman has been a longtime advocate for those with disabilities. He is the Commissioner of the Keshet Buddy Baseball Program and a Manager of the BGRA Buddy Baseball Program. As one parent stated, “He brings much happiness, enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, athleticism and just plain fun to those in the program.” Dean is a commissioner of the Buffalo Grove Commission for Residents with Disabilities where he helps to educate the public about the issues of special needs families. He is the Director of the Progressive Services Network and a past Board Member and VP for the Center for Enriched Living. Dean is a resident of Buffalo Grove with his wife, Leslie. Youth Volunteer Award #1

Buffalo Grove Hammer AZA The Buffalo Grove Hammer AZA is a chapter of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO). The chapter is comprised of pre-teen and teenage boys in grades 8 through 12. Representing the Hammer AZA board is Josh Nahrstadt, a Buffalo Grove resident. A member of the Buffalo Grove Hammer AZA, Jacob Waxberg, drowned at summer camp this year, and to help with their grieving process, the organization sold wristbands to area youth in memory of their friend. The SMILE4WAXY wristbands have already raised over $2,000 and the organization has purchased a bronze leaf in Jacob’s honor at the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo at Brookfield Zoo. The remainder of the money collected will go into a scholarship program in Jacob’s memory. Hammer AZA also volunteers at Wings (a shelter for abused women), has held clothing drives and raises money for Invisible Children.

Alexander Wziontka Alexander Wziontka is an Eagle Scout with Troop 140 sponsored by Saint Mary Parish. For his Eagle Scout Project, Alexander made and sent solar cooking ovens to earthquake victims in Haiti and to Solar Household Energy, a Washington, DC nonprofit that promotes solar cooking internationally. He has also earned the Bronze, Silver and Gold Eagle palms representing 15 merit badges beyond his Eagle Scout requirements. He assists other scouts in the troop with their Eagle Scout Projects. Alexander has participated in road clean-ups, handed out flyers for the police department, helped a veteran’s group place flags at Saint Mary Cemetery and organized a shoe drive, Soles for Souls, which earned him the Jimmy Stewart Boy Scout Good Citizen Award. He has achieved highest honors in scouting and is currently the Lakota Lodge Chapter Chief. He is also active in his church. Alexander is a Buffalo Grove resident and goes to Buffalo Grove High School. He is a member of the Cross Country team and also a member of the school’s Science Olympiad, Math and Robotics teams. He takes the Boy Scout oath’s “On my honor, I will do my best…to help other people at all times…” and the Scout’s laws (…trustworthy, helpful…) to heart. www.buffalogrovechamber.org
