In addition to the beautiful recreational lakes, Buffalo boasts 26 regional and neighborhood parks to enjoy. During summer months, a weekly concert in the park program, sponsored by businesses, is offered free to hundreds of people at the Sturges Park Bandshell along the shores of Buffalo Lake. In the winter months, fish house villages cover the lakes while skaters enjoy ice skating and neighborhood hockey rinks. Many people enjoy the 25 miles of trails that connect our parks and allow recreational opportunities year-round. The Parkshore Pavilion, located downtown on Buffalo Lake, provides canoe, fishing boat, paddle boat and pontoon rentals and concessions during the summer. Ice skate rentals are available at the Pavilion during the winter.

right County was founded and opened up for settlement by pioneers in 1855. The Village of Buffalo was platted in 1856 to 1858. Most people think that Buffalo is named for the mammal that once roamed the prairie, but it is actually named after the carp-like fish that were once abundant in this region. Buffalo remained a small town till the mid1800s when it became a popular resort town for wealthy day-trippers from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. There were several resorts located around Lake Pulaski, one of the two largest lakes in Buffalo. The town experienced extensive growth when the railroad arrived in Buffalo in December of 1887 and was soon incorporated. Visitors would take a train from the Twin Cities and arrive in Buffalo only an hour later. Buffalo remained a popular resort destination from the 1890s until the 1920s. During the summer months, Buffalo’s population would nearly double in size from all the visiting tourists. The population of Buffalo in 1887 was 400 people. This was the year that the Buffalo School District was also established. According to the Buffalo Journal dated February 29, 1989, 50 new business blocks and residential areas were scheduled to be erected. Throughout Buffalo’s history, city officials and business leaders have actively sought out and promoted new economic growth.
Various industries have come and gone, but Buffalo has always had a strong, wide industrial and business base, and the natural rise and fall of any one company has not severely damaged Buffalo’s economic health. That kind of stability is the continued goal and should sustain the good life for another 100 years. A visit to the Wright County Historical Society (WCHS), organized in March of 1942, will take you back in history. WCHS houses a beautiful museum, library, historical archives and five historic structures. The mission of the WCHS is the location, discovery, collection and preservation of historical artifacts and records and the dissemination of knowledge about the history of Wright County and its relationship to the State of Minnesota.

The WCHS is a nonprofit 501(3) organization. Individuals may join for a nominal fee of $10 per year and will receive a quarterly newsletter, discounts in the gift shop, special mailings for the upcoming events and voting privileges. Everyone is welcome to visit – hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year-round. WCHS’s phone number is 763-682-7323. f you are looking for boutiques or antiques, vintage or specialty shops, head to Buffalo—we have it all! Buffalo has become a favorite destination for shoppers from the cities and surrounding areas, and for good reason. With locations spanning from the historic downtown area and along Highways 55 and 25, it is easy to reach the shop of your choice, or all of them! Buffalo offers a shopping experience like no other!
Buffalo boasts many anchor stores—Menards, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Target, Cub Foods, and Coborn’s. The “occasional sales weekends” feature shops that are open only one weekend of each month beginning on the first Thursday of each month. Inventory at the occasional shops is changed out each month. Another attraction to shoppers is the newly established Buffalo Rock Winery, a boutique winery located just 18 miles west of I-494 off of Highway 55. Buffalo Rock was founded on a passion for wines produced from locally grown, cold hardy fruit. Stop by to relax with a glass of wine or sample from the list and stroll through the vineyard. The Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce offers a Visitor’s Guide with a detailed map showing the location of shops and restaurants. The Guide is available at the Chamber office and many of the retail and dining facilities. Or, download a visitor’s map at the Buffalo Tourism website, www.buffalo-mn.org, that features places to shop, eat, play and stay.

Facilities include playground equipment, boat launching sites and boat rentals, swimming
beaches, athletic fields, picnic areas and shelters. Sturges Park, located on the shore of Buffalo Lake in downtown Buffalo, is a hub of activity throughout the summer months. he Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District (BHM), established in 1857, serves three Wright County communities and its surrounding townships. The district has a population of over 32,000 residents and covers 157 square miles. The BHM student population has approximately 5,760 students that spans across six elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one alternative high school and a transitions school for students with special needs. Education has long been a tradition in the BHM school district, where lifelong learning is part of the strong foundation of its community. From early childhood development through higher education, Buffalo is truly dedicated to providing only the finest educational experience possible to its residents. The community’s dedication to the education of its children is reflected in its excellent schools. Buffalo’s public schools feature extensive facilities, diverse curriculums and well-trained staffs – all aimed at developing each young person to their fullest potential. BHM’s educational landscape offers a wide variety of services and programs, from special education options to advanced placement courses to Community Education Programs that service all ages. Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, BHM will offer families the opportunity to pay for an all-day every day kindergarten option at all six elementary schools. Parents also have the option to enroll their child in the free half-day every day program. Another option available for elementary and middle school students is the Quest Program. Quest is an accelerated learning opportunity for those students in grades 2-7 who are in the top two percent of their class. At Buffalo High School, the Arts Magnet Program is a school within the high school, offering arts-enriched core classes and a total emersion into a variety of “arts” classes. PRIDE Transitions opened its doors to 18-21-year-old special education students in 2008-09. The program is for those identified students who need additional transitional skills from high school to the world of work and independent living.

he growth and success of the area’s economy is attributed to the exceptional leadership of the local government and business-oriented organizations, including the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber works diligently to promote further economic development within the city and its surrounding areas. Buffalo’s progressive and cooperative attitude supports commerce in its endeavors, assisting in the success and growth of existing businesses while providing numerous incentives attractive to new business and industry.
26 d BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
Economic development is a priority of the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce. Retail area improvement and beautification receives ongoing attention. In 2007, Buffalo received the “America in Bloom” national contest award for its focus on tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral displays and turf and ground cover. Each year, the city’s streets are aligned with hanging gardens and in-ground floral displays making the community a very attractive place for visitors as well as those who enjoy living in Buffalo.
This community’s active Chamber also sponsors a busy calendar of promotions, events and activities – all designed to foster and promote civic, commercial, industrial and cultural interests for the citizens of Buffalo and surrounding areas. In June 2008, the City of Buffalo’s Housing Redevelopment Authority (HRA) contracted McComb Group, LTD, to conduct a retail market analysis of Buffalo businesses. The goal of the study was to increase retail and service establishments in Buffalo. The reports are available on the Chamber’s website at www.buffalochamber.org/economicdevelopment. This webpage also has a link to the Downtown Vision Plan, which was created in 2007.

Emergency Care – Buffalo Hospital recently earned a Level III Trauma Center designation from the Minnesota Department of Health’s Minnesota Statewide Trauma System. Treating close to 22,000 patient visits in the Emergency Department, Buffalo Hospital has highly trained emergency providers and advanced lifesaving equipment and technology. The Emergency Department also offers a widerange of specialists on call for emergency treatment and full-service imaging and laboratory services are available 24 hours a day. Orthopedics – Buffalo Hospital treats nearly all orthopedic trauma, chronic conditions and sports injuries involving hips, knees, shoulders and other joints and bones. Patients considering hipreplacement surgery don’t need to travel far from home for the latest tissue sparing technique. The anterior approach to hip replacement surgery features a smaller incision and is less invasive, eliminating the need to cut through the muscle or tendons. Patients have less potential pain, quicker recovery times and better mobility.

Abutting the hospital is Buffalo Clinic. Buffalo Clinic has been taking care of the Buffalo community since 1951. As our community has grown, so has the clinic. In 1979, the clinic moved to its present facility on Highway 25 to provide patients with expanded services and more doctors. Because the clinic believes community healthcare has no boundaries, they expanded by opening clinics in nearby Monticello, Albertville and St. Michael to take care of the growing population in these areas.
Today, Buffalo Clinic is poised to continue their commitment to take care of you by providing the most up-to-date primary and specialty healthcare services available. To deliver those services, the clinic is fortunate to have some of the most outstanding and dedicated physicians, nurses and other professionals available. That’s why you may always count on them to be here when you need them, just as they have for the last 50-plus years. For more information visit www.buffaloclinic.com or call 763-682-1313.
