ocated on the Colorado River, Bullhead City is a thriving community where striking scenic beauty provides the backdrop for a host of attractions and outdoor recreation activities.

Gold miners first began settling the area in the mid-1800s. The community now known as Bullhead City first began as Hardyville, when William Harrison Hardy began operating a ferry, trading post and inn on the Colorado River in 1864. A historical marker is located on the actual site, near the corner of Highway 95 and Plata Drive. The nearby Hardyville Pioneer Cemetery contains nearly two-dozen graves from the time period. The modern beginnings of the city are tied to the construction of Davis Dam, which began in 1942, but halted because World War II consumed necessary materials. One year after the war ended, construction resumed and the dam was completed in 1950. Davis Dam is named after the late Arthur Powell Davis, director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1914 until 1923. It provides hydroelectric power to cities throughout the Southwest, controling the Colorado River flows to prevent flooding and manages the water resources in the region.

Davis Dam construction workers and their families lived in a community at the foot of the dam, called Davis Camp. Eventually, the town that sprang up to support the growing population was named Bullhead City after a rock island in the Colorado River that resembled the shoulders and head of a bull with large, curved horns. Over time, the rock was submerged under the rising waters of Lake Mohave as they backed up behind Davis Dam in the early 1950s. In the 1960s, developers began advertising local subdivisions in the Southern California area and the retirement population began to grow. Bullhead City was incorporated in 1984. The population has grown from just over 10,000 residents in 1980 to nearly 40,000 reported in 2010, with an estimated population of 75,000 in a 20-mile radius in 2008.

The Arizona Veterans Memorial stands nine feet high, 40 feet wide and displays the flags of Arizona, the U.S. and each branch of the armed services. The memorial exhibits 11 bronze plaques holding the names of more than 3,000 service men and women from the state of Arizona who were killed in all wars and armed conflicts in the last 100 years. On each side of the curved memorial wall are giant bronze eagles surrounded by 50 stars, each representing one of the 50 states. The riverfront memorial park is open year-round and admission is free. The Colorado River Valley is known across the Southwest as a year-round vacation paradise, offering a choice between the cold, fast-flowing Colorado River and the warm, smooth waters of Lake Mohave. Both are perfect for water sports such as boating, water skiing, personal watercraft and sport fishing throughout the year. Fishing has always been one of the region’s claims to fame. Local fishing guides report catching striper in the 20- to 30-pound range almost daily, and believe there are still even larger fish to be found in the Bullhead City area. Regular special events like rodeos, the annual River Regatta, an annual motorcycle rally, burro (not really) bar-b-que, chili cook-offs and festivals provide family friendly activities with a perfect climate for outdoor recreation all year long. A variety of lodging, dining and shopping experiences are offered by the area’s many businesses and gaming, along with top-ranked entertainment, are located just across the Colorado River in Laughlin, as well as on the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe’s reservation to the south. For a vacation long or short, Bullhead City is a hub for enjoying many interesting activities in the surrounding region. CASINOS, RECREATION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE COLORADO RIVER

he Fort Mojave Indian Tribe continues to move forward, bringing new economic opportunities to the tri-state area with the creation of new businesses, new jobs, residential communities, casino gaming and superior customer service. The Tribe relies on its rich culture and history to help structure the future of its people in an ever-changing world. Mojave Indians are Pipa Aha Macav—“The People By The River.” Mojave culture traces the earthly origins of its people to Spirit Mountain, the highest peak in the Newberry Mountains, located northwest of the present reservation inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The Tribe’s spirit mentor, Mutavilya, created the Colorado River, its plants and animals, and instructed the Pipa Aha Macav in the arts of civilization. They were prosperous farmers with well-established villages and trade networks that stretched as far as the Pacific Ocean. With the ever-growing insurgence of non-Indian people to the region traditionally occupied by Pipa Aha Macav, a U.S. military outpost established in 1859 on the east bank of the Colorado River to give safe passage to American immigrants traveling from east to west. Initially, this outpost was called Camp Colorado, but soon was renamed Fort Mojave. After the military fort was closed in 1891, the buildings were transformed into a boarding school, which operated until 1930. Ruins of Fort Mojave still exist today as a reminder of

the once-troubled historic relationship between Pipa Aha Macav and American civilization. The ruins are located on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River, just south of the boundary of present-day Bullhead City. The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe is a federally recognized sovereign Indian nation with 32,000 acres of land in Arizona, Nevada and California. The Tribe’s upbeat economy provides job opportunities for thousands of people through casino gaming, a championship golf course, agriculture, a tribal power company and generating station, residential subdivisions and a new indoor multi-use arena, Mojave Crossing Event Center located in Arizona. Recreation opportunities abound, whether it is gambling at one of the two tribal casinos on the reservation, boating or fishing along the Colorado River, staying at the Avi Resort & Casino’s full-service hotel, hitting the links at the Mojave Resort PGA Championship Golf Course or enjoying the comforts of home away from home in the RV parks, adjacent to either casino. An annual Pow Wow brings Native Americans from tribes across the U.S. to a celebration that includes dance and music competitions as well as displays of many aspects of tribal culture. ullhead City is located in northwestern Mohave County, Arizona, at the point where Arizona, Nevada and California all meet to form the “tri-state” area. Located halfway between Phoenix and Los Angeles, the tri-state area includes Bullhead City, Fort Mohave and Mohave Valley, Arizona; Needles, California; and Laughlin, Nevada. The Colorado River and Lake Mohave make up the western boundary of Mohave County, offering hundreds of miles of shoreline and access to Mohave and Mead Lakes. Katherine Landing, the southernmost access to Lake Mohave, offers: several boat launching ramps, a large marina, campgrounds, motel, grocery store, boat rentals and a repair shop. U.S. Interstate 40, Nevada Route 95 and Arizona Route 68 make travel to the area very accessible by car or RV. he tri-state area boasts a variety of private, public and charter schools from preschool through community college level. Mohave Community College is a two-year, fully accredited public college serving more than 10,000 students at its four campuses, including the Bullhead City campus at 3400 Highway 95. The college offers associate of arts, science and business degrees that transfer to universities as the first two years of a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree. MCC also offers a wide variety of career/technical degree programs. Among those offered on the Bullhead City campus are: dental hygiene, dental assisting, automotive collision repair, automotive service technology, paralegal, pharmacy technology, nursing, medical assisting and

paramedic/EMT. In the fall of 2012, radiologic technology will be added at the Bullhead City campus. The local MCC campus is also home to a satellite campus of Northern Arizona University, offering advanced degrees in many areas of study. The river citiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first vocational nonprofit charter school, Academy of Building Industries, is located in Fort Mohave. Vocational trade courses offered include carpentry, air conditioning and heating, computer-aided drafting, plumbing, welding and electrical. Bullhead Community Park Located along the Colorado River on the west side of Highway 95 toward Bullhead City’s northern end, Bullhead Community Park features a large grassy area with a children’s playground, horseshoe pits, ball fields, sand volleyball courts, beachfront ramadas with barbecues and a boat launch ramp. A beautiful new, large, covered ramada area is available for special events by reservation. Admission is free, but there is a fee for launch ramp use during the summer season. Rotary Park Located on a 300-acre parcel of land along the Colorado River in Bullhead City, Rotary Park features a sports complex with soccer fields, Pop Warner football and brand-new ball fields. The giant park also offers lighted basketball courts, a skate park, beaches, walking trails, ramadas with barbecues, a boat launch ramp, a fishing jetty, a fish cleaning station and the recently opened Bullhead City Dog Park. Admission is free, but there is a fee for launch ramp use during the summer season. The park is located on Riverview Drive, about a mile west of Highway 95. Colorado River Heritage Greenway Trails System This system of improved hiking trails offers several short hikes in various locations throughout Bullhead City and includes the only designated water trail system in the state of Arizona. Four segments of the trail have been completed to date, with trailheads located at Davis Camp, Heritage Park (just south of the Laughlin Bridge), Ken Fovargue Park and Rotary Park. Kayak rentals and tours are available or visitors may bring their own watercraft and launch at Davis Camp, Bullhead Community Park or Rotary Park. Small, non-motorized crafts can be launched at several other locations in the area, as well. Colorado River Museum The museum includes replicas of the area landmarks, Native American artifacts and displays of historical items from early settlers to the first slot machines. Located on Highway 95, just north of the Laughlin Bridge at Davis Camp, the museum is operated by the nonprofit Colorado River Historical Society. Originally built in the 1940s as the housing area for the workers building Davis Dam, this huge Mohave County park stretches along the Colorado River from the foot of Davis Dam south to the Laughlin Bridge. It features beaches with ramadas and barbecues, a boat launch ramp, swim beach and riverfront camping areas. The RV park offers partial and full hook-ups and a laundry facility. Arizona Veterans Memorial

Lake Mohave Nearly 68 miles from end to end, Lake Mohave offers an abundance of coves and natural campsites with some of the best fishing in the Southwest. Located just north of Bullhead City and above Davis Dam, Lake Mohave is part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Just two miles north of Davis Dam is Katherine Landing. The largest marina on the lake, Katherine Landing was first settled by gold miners and is named for Katherine Mine. It now just runs north of the improved marina area. Visitors will find several amenities including: launch ramps; a marina with hundreds of boat slips and a gas dock; a motel, RV park and campgrounds; a store, restaurant and boat rentals that include everything from personal watercraft to fishing boats and houseboats; and a boat repair shop and dry storage area. Davis Dam Located in Pyramid Canyon, at the northern end of Bullhead City, Davis Dam created the 68-mile-long Lake Mohave. Named for former director of reclamation, Arthur Powell Davis. This $67 million earth and rock embankment spanning the Colorado River has a concrete spillway, intake structure and power plant. The dam is 200 feet high and was completed in 1953 to control floods and to generate hydroelectric energy. Best viewing of the dam is from Davis Camp in Bullhead City or from River Road in Laughlin. The dam itself is closed to vehicle traffic. For more information, call (928) 754-3682.

Grapevine Canyon Native American petroglyphs, created by indigenous people an estimated 800 to 1,000 years ago, adorn the walls of this canyon located near Christmas Tree Pass, northwest of Bullhead City. There is a two-mile gravel road leading to the trailhead off Highway 163 about 10 miles west of the Laughlin Bridge. The canyon was named for the grape plants found in the area. A short and somewhat strenuous walk from the parking lot is required to reach the petroglyphs. Ranger-guided hikes are offered regularly. A beautiful riverfront park in Bullhead City is the setting for the Arizona Veterans Memorial, dedicated in the memory of more than 3,000 military men and women from the state of Arizona who were killed during wars and armed conflicts over the past 100 years. The largest portion of the memorial overlooks the Colorado River and contains a line of giant flagpoles paralleling a curved wall standing nine feet high and 40 feet wide. giant bronze eagles surrounded by 50 stars representing the 50 states. The Arizona Veterans Memorial Park also contains a pyramidshaped stone memorial honoring the U.S.S. Arizona, which was destroyed in the attack on Pearl Harbor that marked America’s entry into World War II. The memorial park is open year-round and admission is free. To get there, take State Highway 95 to Riverview Drive. Travel west (towards the Colorado River and past Rotary Park) until the road ends at Riviera Boulevard, about two miles. Turn left onto Riviera Boulevard and continue about 300 yards, where the road terminates into a large parking lot. Follow the signs to enter the memorial park area.

Oatman Located in the Black Mountains, southeast of Bullhead City on historic Route 66, Oatman is a Western history buff’s dream. Experience an old western gunfight, enjoy the friendly ‘wild’ burros and browse through the many curio shops, art galleries and stores. Taste the “fixins” at one of the eateries, or wet your whistle at a saloon as you go back in time to the late 1800s, when gold was discovered in the region. Many buildings still exist from that time period, including the Oatman Hotel, built in 1902, and The Glory Hole antique shop, constructed in 1914 as the Oatman Drug Company and Health Club. Stagecoach rides and off-road tours also are available. The town hosts several events each year, including the Annual Bed Races and Gold Camp Days. To reach Oatman from Bullhead City, take Highway 95 south to Boundary Cone Road. Head east on Boundary Cone Road for about 12 miles and you’re there. For more information, call (928) 768-6222.

Also, inside the refuge is the scenic Topock Gorge, where the Colorado River winds for several miles through canyons of towering, ancient volcanic rocks. The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and can be reached from Courtwright Road in Mohave Valley or via the Topock exit on I-40. Boat Launching Facilities Boat launch facilities are available at Davis Camp, Bullhead Community Park, Rotary Park in Bullhead City, Fisherman’s Access and Big Bend of the River State Recreation Area in Laughlin. Some launch fees may apply. The closest launching area on Lake Mohave is at Katherine Landing. Lake Mead National Recreation Area park entrance fee applies and there is a choice of four launching facilities (two paved). Golf The terrific climate allows for year-round golf in the Bullhead City area. Currently, there are several golf courses in the area, including 18-hole courses and nine-hole facilities. The variety of holes and pars offers exciting play for golfers of all skill levels.

Havasu National Wildlife Refuge Established in 1941, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 37,000 acres and 30 river miles (300 miles of shoreline) along the Colorado River. The refuge starts about 15 miles south of Bullhead City at the Topock Marsh and runs south to the mouth of Lake Havasu. Topock Marsh is a huge wetlands area that is home to many species of fish and waterfowl. There are several launch ramp and camping facilities available and fishing is abundant.

Mohave Community College Mohave Community College strives to provide culturally enriching programs and opportunities on its Bullhead City campus. The “Voice of the River” community choir is based at the college and financially supported by the MCC Foundation. River Valley Artist Guild This local organization holds exhibitions and shows throughout the region each year. River Valley Artist Guild is a nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage individual efforts and community interest in the creative arts. Every year, the guild sponsors local arts programs including high school and community college arts scholarships, a high school art show, the Annual Black Mountain Art Show and the Arts and Crafts Fair held during Hardyville Days at Bullhead Community Park each October.

ullhead City is an incorporated city located within Mohave County. The city provides a multitude of services, from: public works, building and maintaining roads, roadway medians, sidewalks and other infrastructure, to planning and zoning, building permits and inspections, municipal courts and well-staffed police department. The city relies on a two percent sales tax for the majority of its income, and there is no city property tax. The parks & recreation department handle maintenance, operations and ongoing improvements to its parks and recreation areas, which include two large riverfront parks, several ball fields, the community swimming pool and other recreation-oriented opportunities. Fort Mohave and Mohave Valley, to the south of Bullhead City, are unincorporated areas within the county. Across the Colorado River from Bullhead City is Laughlin, an unincorporated township governed by the Clark County, Nevada Board of Commissioners through the locally elected Laughlin Town Advisory Board. Business The friendliness and attention to customer service you expect to find in a small town still exists and it’s right here in Bullhead City. The growth in the area over the past few years has brought an abundance of business opportunities to residents. These opportunities have added to the job base and delivered retail shopping opportunities that previously required a road trip of at least 200 miles round-trip. In 2005, the growth of the population in the region reached an estimated 72,000 within a 20-mile radius of Bullhead City. The Bullhead Regional Economic Development Authority is a private, nonprofit organization contracted by the city of Bullhead City to direct and implement the economic development activities of the region. It is governed by a 25member board representing many different economic sectors of the community, with the daily operations under the guidance of a President/CEO. The prime objective of the EDA is to attract new businesses to the area and assist with the retention and expansion of existing businesses. This is accomplished by ensuring that all of the incentives offered by the state, county and city are made available to all who qualify. Western Arizona Regional Medical Center– Bullhead City The opening of a hospital in Bullhead City came from a vision set forth by a group of community leaders known as the Colorado River Valley Community Hospital Association back in the early 1980s. By January 23, 1984, their vision materialized into the 36-bed Bullhead Community Hospital that opened to meet the growing healthcare needs of the residents of the area. It did not take long for the hospital to double size in 1988, was again expanded a decade later to 98 beds when it took on a new name, Western Arizona Regional Medical Center. Today, 25 years later, the 139-bed hospital continues to grow, change, add technology and prepare for the future.

One of the greatest assets of any business is the people working there. The hospital’s team of employees, physicians and volunteers focus on caring for the people in our river communities every day. WARMC has more than 700 employees, a medical staff of 100 physicians and a volunteer force of over 110 individuals who dedicate thousands of hours to helping patients. WARMC is the largest employer in Bullhead City/Mohave Valley, with an economic impact of more than $60 million annually. Millions of dollars have been spent on technology and expansion projects that are critical to meeting the demands of a growing area. Valley View Medical Center–Fort Mohave Valley View Medical Center is the tri-state area’s fastestexpanding hospital. It is a full-service, state-of-the-art medical campus with around the clock emergency department, including an on-site air ambulance helicopter. The affiliated medical staff includes many specialists. Valley View has the only inpatient hospital pediatric unit in the Bullhead City-Laughlin-Needles area. Most major private and public insurance programs are accepted. Valley View is licensed as a 90-bed hospital with all private rooms equipped with cable television, including a special patient information channel.

Valley View has six surgical units and a 12-bed outpatient care unit. A 12-bed critical care unit provides a wide range of life-supporting therapies for critically ill patients. It is adjacent to the hospital’s high-tech cardiac cath lab. Spacious labor and delivery suites are more hotel like than hospital rooms. Each room features a fold-out bed so that a family member can comfortably spend the night. The inpatient and outpatient radiology and imaging center has 4D ultrasound, 16-slice CT-Scan, 1.5 Tesla MRI, digital mammography and nuclear medicine programs that are the envy of big-city hospitals. The 12-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit provides a full range of physical, occupational and speech therapy services, including an outdoor therapy courtyard. The outpatient rehab complex adjacent to the hospital even includes a fitness pool for aquatic therapy. Valley View is an active participant in many tri-state area community activities. The hospital is just south of Bullhead City and a short distance from Laughlin and Needles. It is approximately two miles from the point where Arizona, California and Nevada all come together.
