CITY OF CAMDEN, ARKANSAS INCORPORATED 1844

CAMDEN

The

Camden area, a vibrant and caring community nestled in the pine-covered hills on the bluffs overlooking the Ouachita (Wash-I-taw) River, is truly a diamond in the rough. Almost 14,000 people reside in Camden (the county seat) and approximately 32,000 live in Ouachita County. The country covers an area of over 700 square miles. The streets of Camden are lined with antebellum homes and historic landmarks that only scratch the surface of a rugged heritage enriched by Indian folklore and the glories and heartbreaks of the Civil War. But the soul of the area’s historic legacy lies not on its heroic mystique but a do-or-die pioneer work ethic that has put this community on the industrial map.

The land itself, quilted with hardwoods and pine, is a natural habitat for an abundance of wild life. The river, lakes, and streams that stitch the land together are filled with bass, crappie, catfish, and bream. Camden is a community whose heart is rooted not only in the richness of its past or the promise of its future, but also in its people themselves. With over 20 active civic groups and an abundance of volunteers, Camden has proven to be a community where its citizens get involved. Welcome to our community, where a historic past, a progressive present, and a promising future characterize the Camden area.

Two historical museums are located in Camden, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Camden Area Chamber of Commerce offices and Main Street Camden are located in the historic Missouri-Pacific Depot, built in 1913. The depot houses a mini-museum containing railroad and Civil War memorabilia as well as Grapette and Camark Pottery, both of which were manufactured in Camden. The McCollum-Chidester House was home to both the Union and Confederate Armies and houses original furnishings. Recreational activities abound on the scenic Ouachita River, with three state parks only minutes away. Hunting for deer, squirrel, turkey and other game birds is abundant in the majestic pine forests surrounding Camden and Ouachita County. A public swimming pool, a public and private golf course and numerous tennis courts and parks are for the enjoyment of our visitors and residents. HistoryofCamden hanks to caring citizens, much of Camden’s history has been preserved and many of the Antebellum homes restored. Visitors don’t want to miss our Historic Downtown District, as well as the Historic Clifton-Greening Street District, the Washington Street Historic District, the restored Missouri Pacific Depot, the many Civil War landmarks, and the more than 20 historic houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of these homes is open as a bed and breakfast lodge while the McCollum-Chidester House serves as a museum with history dating back as far as 1847.

T

Camden actually was born in 1824 as a steamboat landing where cotton was loaded and shipped to New Orleans. In fact, the Bluff, as it was known, was one of the leading cotton-shipping terminals and became the site of a cotton gin in 1841, launching Camden’s industrial history.

The museum tells the fascinating stories of this region’s natural resources, with emphasis on petroleum and brine. Explore state-of-the-art indoor exhibits, as well as working equipment on display outside in the adjacent Oil Field Park.

The McCollum-Chidester House was a place where stagecoach drivers and traveling visitors found rest, refreshment and gracious hospitality in the days before the Civil War. The house is practically unchanged, as visitors can view original furnishings, mementos and bullet holes in the upstairs walls. The town certainly has seen a fair share of famous individuals passing through its history. Nineteenth century writer Edgar Allen Poe worked as a printer for the local newspaper, The Herald, in 1845. More recently, parts of John Jakes‚ “The North and the South” made-for-television mini-series, were filmed at the McCollum-Chidester House. Kirstie Alley and Patrick Swayze were two favorites of the locals. Camdenites were extras in the scenes filmed here. Martin Scorcese directed his first movie, Box Car Bertha, featuring Barbara Hershey and David Carradine in Camden as well.

Healthcare uring those times of life when illness strikes, Camden’s medical scene can make you feel better about your treatment options.

D

Ouachita County Medical Center, a 98-bed acute care hospital, has a newly completed women’s center and is a non-profit facility. The medical staff consists of 22 active staff members and approximately 25 consulting staff members. OCMC has modern, stateof-the-art equipment, including a new Elscint CT Scanner, diasonic ultra-sound, nuclear medicine equipment, a full-body bone densitometer, an MRI, and modern LDRP rooms. OCMC offers many services not usually found in communities the size of Camden, including a home health program, a 23-bed chemical dependency unit, a geriatric psych unit, a hospice program, an orthopedic & physical rehabilitation program, a meal delivery system and a state-of-the-art day surgery center. OCMC is fully licensed by the state of Arkansas and all of its services are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. The home health, healthware, hospice and chemical dependency programs are individually accredited by the Joint Commission also. For long-term care, the Camden area supports four nursing homes, one with a dedicated Alzheimer’s unit and a modern mental health care clinic. The Christian Health Center serves the working person with no insurance privileges.

Worship amden is fortunate to have an excellent variety of religious denominations throughout the community. Nearly every Christian denomination is represented, with services open to all faiths.

C

Many local churches play a large role in our community, sponsoring positive recreation and entertainment for our citizens of all ages. For our youngsters and youth there are camps, Bible schools, field trips, fall festivals, fifth quarters, carnivals and Christian rock groups, to name a few. Some of the services and entertainment that our local churches offer our adults are Mother’s Day Out, Parent’s

Night Out, self-improvement and family oriented seminars, frequent outings for senior citizens, visitation and outreach for shut-ins, food banks and other services for those in need, guest evangelists, gospel singing, banquets, socials and softball and volleyball leagues. Christian service and fellowship are easily found in the Camden area. New residents are sure to find a church to call home.
