INTRODUCTION hat a great year 2011-2012 has been for the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. In 2011 the Chamber celebrated its 50th anniversary of serving the Central, Clemson, Pendleton and Six Mile areas. During the past year, our Chamber experienced unprecedented growth while completing two vital projects that will shape our future. First, the Chamber concluded a capital campaign to retire the debt on the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center headquarters. We especially thank the city of Clemson for their special gifts to allow the Chamber to become debt free in a short amount of time. Secondly, 2011 marked the end of the chambers five-year Strategic Plan. Since August 2011, the area board of directors, various councils and divisions and Chamber staff began a five-month process of drafting a new strategic plan that will run the through 2015.

We are fortunate that the surrounding community possesses a unique blend of vision, opportunity and leadership. These elements, when combined with a thriving business economy, yield tremendous results and position the Chamber to achieve at even greater levels in the future.

The Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce is evolving in our role of the voice of the business community through collaboration with many diverse groups that make up our area fabric. The Chamber leadership and staff are well positioned to provide quality services to our members and strategic partners in Upstate South Carolina. As in any enterprise, there will be additional challenges to be met, projects to be completed and partnerships to be made. The Chamber is committed to do our part in support to the businesses that we serve.

Business and education are two words to describe the makeup of our community. We are within five miles of three higher education entities Clemson University, Southern Wesleyan University and TriCounty Technical College. We are fortunate to have a broad range of area businesses including manufacturing, industry and small business.

All this will allow us to not only sustain but expand upon the mission of the Chamber: To serve as the unified voice of business for our members while promoting economic vitality and a favorable business climate while protecting and improving the tri-county area’s quality of life.

CLEMSON AREA

HISTORY he Clemson area embraces a rich heritage that goes back hundreds of years. The region was mainly rural and agricultural in nature during its early years, and hosted a small industry of sawmills and gristmills. Like much of the south, the area coped with many hardships as a result of the Civil War, but the Clemson area stayed strong during those ensuing years. It began to rebuild and experienced much in the way of growth with the coming of the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Railroad (later known as the Southern Railway) in the 1870s and the establishment of Clemson University (originally called Clemson College – then an all-male military school) in 1893. In addition to Clemson College, students soon had the choice of attending Southern Wesleyan University, which opened in 1906 and later in 1962 Tri-County Technical College.

The Clemson area continued to grow and develop, bringing in new industries and residents looking for opportunity, top-notch

education and a nice climate – characteristics that remain important draws to this day. Clemson’s population has gradually increased over the last couple of decades, standing at just over 11,000 in 1990 and reaching nearly 14,000 by 2010 – a number that does not include the influx of students attending Clemson University (19,000+), Southern Wesleyan University (2,400+) and Tri-County Technical College (nearly 7,000) each school year. Additional communities, including Central (5,159), Pendleton (2,964) and Six Mile (675), have continued to grow alongside the city of Clemson, adding much to the appeal of this wonderful region.

The area maintains many historic sites, including Fort Hill (the former home of John C. Calhoun), historic gristmills, churches, plantations and several informative museums. For those interested in learning the history of the greater Clemson area, plan on visiting Central Heritage Museum, Anderson County Museum, Oconee Heritage Museum and many other historically rich attractions.

LOCATION &

TRANSPORTATION he greater Clemson area is nestled within northwest South Carolina, straddling the counties of Pickens, Anderson and Oconee. The area rests at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, less than one hour from Greenville. This ideal location not only affords it much in the way of recreation, but also unmatched accessibility to the region’s efficient transportation network.

In addition to a number of local thoroughfares, Clemson and its surrounding communities are well served by U.S. Routes 123 and 76; State Routes 28, 88, 93 and 133; and I-85 (to the south) and I-185 (to the east). Clemson Area Transit supplies convenient, affordable public bus transit to the region, as does Greyhound, which operates out of Anderson and connects with CAT. Amtrak commuter rail runs out of a Clemson station, as well, with service between New York and New Orleans.

In addition, the Clemson area hosts the Oconee County Regional Airport, a general aviation facility. The closest commercial airport is the Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport, which is reachable within approximately 45 minutes of Clemson.

HOMES he selection of homes making up the Clemson area’s real estate spread is impressive and diversified. Well-maintained older homes mix well with newer construction in subdivisions across the region. Downtown Clemson is great for those wanting to be in the middle of it all and within walking distance to the attractions of Clemson University. In addition to these home options is a catalog of single-family dwellings, high quality townhomes and condominium complexes – some of which overlook the sparkling water of Lake Hartwell – as well as opportunities to rent.

The area also presents a variety of retirement and assisted living facilities for seniors and, as a college town, Clemson offers plenty of resources and living options for current and graduating students. In fact, The Princeton Review ranked Clemson #1 in the nation for “town and gown” relations among public institutions two years in a row. RECREATION hen it comes to recreation, the Clemson area is bursting with opportunities. This scenic northwestern South Carolina region is well known for its beautiful lakes, rivers and the gorgeous Blue Ridge

Mountains, which serve as an unmatched backdrop when enjoying the outdoors. Hartwell, Keowee and Jocassee lakes are all ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and other water activities, while numerous trails wind their way around the region, drawing bikers, hikers and horseback riders.

There are also plenty of chances to go camping, have a picnic or just kick back and relax at one of many local, state and national park or recreation areas.

On top of these outstanding outdoor sites, residents are invited to take advantage of a long list of recreation programs and facilities offered by area municipalities, including the city of Clemson and the towns of Central, Six Mile and Pendleton. The area also hosts the Foothills Area YMCA, Central/Clemson Recreation Center and a number of athletic organizations offering community members opportunities to participate in everything from basketball, football, baseball and soccer. In addition, the greater Clemson area features several excellent golf courses, including the Walker Course at Clemson University, Boscobel Golf Club in Pendleton and at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca.

TOURISM here is much to see and do while visiting the Clemson area.

Clemson and its surrounding communities host a number of interesting historical landmarks and museums: the Woodburn and Ashtabula plantations, a local theatre troupe and, with the presence of Clemson University, attractions such as the South Carolina Botanical Gardens, the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Hill (the former home of John C. Calhoun), Memorial Stadium, the Lee Gallery and the T. Ed Garrison Arena. Outdoor recreation is a major draw here, as is shopping in downtown Clemson, at the area’s six large shopping malls, 200 factory outlets and other retail sites. In addition, an eclectic mix of restaurants and nightlife hotspots are readily available throughout the area.

Visitors planning an extended stay to the Clemson area are pleased to find a variety of options for accommodations.

Full-service hotels and motels are great for all kinds of travelers, offering a range of business services (Internet access, fax and copy services, etc.), meeting and event space as well as many other on-site and in-room conveniences.

Local bed & breakfast inns, cottages and chalets are appealing for those looking to kick back and relax in a tranquil space, while quality campgrounds, cabins and RV parks present a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a night under the stars.

irst-rate educational opportunities are widespread throughout the Clemson area. A collection of daycares, private institutions, public schools and higher learning facilities are all positioned here, ensuring students have ready access to education at all levels.

The School District of Pickens County, the main public school district serving the Clemson area, is one of the highest rated school systems in the state, consistently garnering many accolades and recognitions for students and teacher excellence. The district’s rigorous traditional curriculum is joined by great opportunities to take advantage of adult learning, alternative education, AP, gifted and talented programs, career and technical courses as well as many others. SDPC is currently growing, thanks to a $315 million building plan that will result in four new high schools, two new elementary schools, a state-of-the-art technology center and renovations at more than a dozen other schools.

Clemson University is a nationally ranked, science and technology-oriented public research university known for an emphasis on collaboration, focus and a culture that encourages faculty and students to embrace bold ideas. Ranking 23rd among national public universities according to U.S. News & World Report, Clemson is the number one choice of the state’s best high school graduates. Clemson is ranked 12th among the country’s

university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and its fine arts programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Tri-County Technical College is a public, two-year, open admissions institution with four campuses in the region. TriCounty offers more than 70 associate degree, diploma and certificate programs, as well as several noncredit courses and continuing education options. In addition, the college supplies services to employers, including: training, consulting, job placement services and cooperative education programs.

Southern Wesleyan University is a comprehensive liberal arts university based in Central. In total, more than 1,350 traditional students and over 1,000 adult-evening students take advantage of 42 degree, five graduate and four specialized programs. The

HEALTHCARE ccess to convenient, high-quality medical care is essential to residents of the Clemson area. The region is filled with dependable and committed healthcare resources that range from specialty health clinics to physician practices offering primary care, dental, physical therapy and other valuable services.

Noted as the state’s largest, independent, not-for-profit health system, AnMed Health is a 578-bed system anchored by AnMed Health Medical Center, a 461-bed hospital in downtown Anderson. AnMed Health also has a satellite North Campus that includes the 72-bed AnMed Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the 45-bed AnMed Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a comprehensive Cancer Center, physician offices and the Cardiac and Orthopaedic Center.

AnMed Health is certified by the Joint Commission and is designated as both a Primary Stroke Center and a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. It is home to a Level II trauma center and medical helicopter. The health system also has some of the best cardiac surgery outcomes in the southeast. Its heart attack response team regularly beats the 90-minute gold standard in treatment time – one of many reasons the Institutes of Health Improvement made it a mentor hospital for heart attack care.

Based in Seneca, Oconee Medical Center has been a part of the region for more than 65 years. The hospital is licensed for 160 patient beds and employs a medical staff of approximately 125 physicians representing 25 specialties. Oconee Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission and offers a range of

excellent services in the areas of cardiology, emergency care, rehabilitation, home health, pain management, surgery, women’s services and more. In addition to the main campus, the medical center operates the Lila Doyle Rehabilitation & Nursing Care facility, the Oconee Hospice of the Foothills and the Wellness Center.

The Clemson Health Center, a joint venture between AnMed Health and Oconee Medical Center, supplies the area with both urgent and primary care as well as diagnostic services. In addition, the facility provides a number of occupational health services, including screening, pre-employment physicals and workers’ compensation cases.

Whether one is need of a check-up or treatment for a more serious condition, local medical providers come together to ensure the continuing health and well being of Clemson area residents, young and old.
