The Chamber Coalition was formed in July of 2006 through a merger of the Corvallis Area Chamber of Commerce (formed in 1912) and the Corvallis-Benton Economic Development Partnership (formed in 1989). History he first non-Calapooia settlers arrived in Benton County around 1845. Benton County was established on December 23, 1847 as the seventh county organized in territorial Oregon. At that time, Benton County’s western border stretched to the Pacific, with its southern border reaching California. The county was named in honor of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, a strong advocate of free land laws and the first Senator to serve for 30 years in Congress.

One of the first settlers was Joseph C. Avery, who arrived in 1845. He settled on the north side of Mary’s River near the confluence of Mary’s River and the Willamette River, the area of Avery Park today. In February 1851, Avery platted the town of Marysville on his claim. Another settler, William F. Dixon, platted “Dixon’s Addition” to the town on his claim directly north of Avery’s. That same year Marysville was named the county seat.

In 1853, to avoid confusion with Marysville, California—where all mail was going—Marysville, Oregon was renamed Corvallis, from ancient Latin for “Heart of the Valley.” In 1855, Corvallis became the first capital of the Oregon territory. An immediate benefit was the publication of the first newspaper in Corvallis, The Oregon Statesman. However, citizens were concerned over Congress’ need to approve a state capital, especially knowing that Congress had already put money into buildings in Salem. In December 1855, the legislature met in a two-story, wood-frame building donated by Avery, on the northwest corner of Second and Adams streets. The objective was to pass one bill, moving the capital to Salem. The Oregon Statesman followed. Located in the navigable headwaters of the Willamette River, Corvallis developed into a regional trading center and a jumping off point for the California gold rush. On January 28, 1857, papers were signed incorporating Corvallis into a town, making it 150 years old in January 2007.

Today, Corvallis is a charming, tree-lined city with a population of nearly 55,000 people, including some 20,000 OSU students. Corvallis is Oregon’s fifth largest metropolitan statistical area. According to Brier Dudley, who writes for the Seattle Times, “Corvallis is a country place, with a collegiate feel, that's also a high-tech center…” Gary Warner, of the Orange County Register, wrote, “If I hit the jackpot tomorrow, I’d quit the rat race and move to Corvallis. You’d find me at the New Morning Bakery with a big mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll, scanning the local real estate listings.” Year after year, studies rank Corvallis one of the best places to live, work, play, grow a business—and grow happily older. Last year, Outside magazine named Corvallis one of the Top 20 Towns in America. In 2008, Moody’s Economic.com listed Corvallis #3 in its U.S. Business Vitality Index. In 2006, the publisher of the country’s top travel guide, Frommers, wrote: “Each city is ranked on 10 major criteria: Economy and jobs, cost of living, climate, education, health and healthcare, crime, transportation, leisure, arts and culture and overall quality of life.” Corvallis ranked 10th of all cities of all sizes in the nation. Last year, AARP magazine ranked Corvallis 3rd in the nation for longest life expectancy.

Corvallis is a green city, not only encased by forest but also the #1 city in the nation on the EPA's 2009 Green Power community’s list. Corvallis is the only city on the west coast to receive this award. In 2008, Country Home magazine named Corvallis the “Best Green Place to Live in America.” Corvallis is also home to a lot of bright people. The Creativity Index of the February 2004 Harvard Business Review placed Corvallis 15th in the nation for creativity. It states, “For a county or a region to achieve growth, it must have three Ts: technology, talent and tolerance.” And in 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Corvallis 5th on its list of Top 25 Smartest Cities. We’re proud to call this special place the Pacific Northwest’s most beautiful college town. While wood products, agriculture and tourism continue to be major industries in the state, high technology is the fastest growing. Corvallis has over 25 software companies ranging in size from Summit Information Systems with over 300 employees to one-person operations, plus Hewlett-Packard’s 2.3million-square-foot research campus. Research Parks & Industrial LandAvailability Benton County has over 1,800 acres of industrial zoned land available, including 1,000 acres in a tax-incentivized Enterprise Zone with a “sustainability” focus and 42 acres designated “shovel ready” by the State of Oregon. ONAMI Corvallis is home to the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI), the state’s first signature research center. ONAMI’s mission is to grow research and commercialization, accelerating innovation-based economic development in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. In its first two years, ONAMI successfully leveraged $40 million in federal and private research grants and has over 140 researchers statewide working to achieve its mission. It is a powerful collaboration involving Oregon’s three public research universities—Oregon State University, Portland State University and the University of Oregon. Other partners include the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the State of Oregon, selected researchers from the Oregon Graduate Institute and the Oregon Health Sciences University. Benton County is one of nine home-rule charter counties in Oregon, which provide greater local governance control to citizens. The county has three full-time Commissioners to manage the legislative, executive and quasi-judicial responsibilities. The Commissioners are elected at-large to four-year terms. Other elected county officials are the Sheriff and District Attorney.

The nine-member City Council is elected by geographical wards to serve two-year terms as the governing body for Corvallis. Education Committed to Excellence K-12 long with our public schools, we have some great private schools in our area; among them are Ashbrook Independent School, Corvallis Montessori School, and the Corvallis Waldorf School. In 2008 the private school K-12 enrollment for Benton County citizens was 9,064 students and the home school enrollment was over 200 children.

The Corvallis School District (509J) serves approximately 6,600 students in six elementary schools, two K-8 schools, two middle schools and two high schools that offer a rich diversity of learning opportunities, such as Spanish dual immersion; orchestras, bands, and choirs; advanced placement classes;

automotive shop; a preengineering program; and world languages. Staff share a strong commitment to the success of all students and a sense of pride in a record of educational excellence. Approximately 71 percent of students take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), 20 percent above the national average, with a composite score of 1717 compared to the national average of 1511. Over two-thirds of our teachers have masters degrees or higher, and several have won state and national honors for their work. Partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and service groups and a host of parent volunteers expand learning opportunities and help meet the needs of all students in the district.

CommunityCollege Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC), a two-year public college, enrolled 24,286 students in the 20072008 school year. Coursework includes general education courses, occupational and technical preparatory training, and lower division college transfer courses.

The Training and Business Development Center offers contracted training services tailored to the needs of business and industry. The Business Development Center can provide assistance in all aspects of business, offering workshops, confidential business counseling and can help business owners locate resources in the community.

OSUTechnology Transfer From agriculture to software, OSU researchers are creating innovative technologies to meet needs and solve problems. The university’s Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) helps commercialize inventions and transfer university-developed technologies to private-sector companies. The OTT works to educate faculty and departments on patents and intellectual property, manages OSU’s patent portfolio and assists in identifying, protecting and licensing OSU inventions for the public’s greater use and benefit. In partnership with the business and development communities, OSU has been instrumental in efforts to commercialize innovative technologies. Oregon’s first signature research site, the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) is co-located on the Hewlett Packard campus and has been the culminating statewide force in gaining hundreds of millions of new research dollars for

Oregon. Entrepreneurship Program OSU extends its role in local innovation and economic development through the College of Business Austin Entrepreneurship Program. Housed at the heart of campus in historic Weatherford Hall, the program creates an integrated living and learning environment to help students start their own businesses. A College of Business faculty member and visiting professionals live in Weatherford Hall to complement other entrepreneurial programming for students.e

The University Theater, the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus, the restored Majestic Theatre in downtown Corvallis and the theatre at Corvallis High School offer plays, symphony concerts, lectures, conferences and seminars throughout the year. The OSU/Corvallis Symphony, the Corvallis Youth Symphony, the Corvallis Repertory Singers and the internationally known Heart of the Valley Children’s Choir provide performances year-round. Corvallis film lovers can choose from two national multiplexes and a locally owned, four-screen art cinema located in the heart of downtown, as well as two annual film festivals.

In 2008, the Oregon State football team won the Brut Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Corvallis Knights baseball, American Legion Baseball, soccer and more unconventional sporting events, such as ultimate frisbee and a women’s football league have a significant following, too. And then, of course, there’s golf. In 2005, Corvallis ranked in the top 10 percent of all U.S. communities over 50,000 for the quality of its golf courses. Corvallis Parks and Recreation provide year-long programs for children and adults. The Corvallis Senior Center has wonderful programming for our seniors, and the Linn-Benton Community College Benton Center provides workout, recreation and martial arts classes, in addition to an array of other life enriching classes in everything from cooking to ceramics.e

The Oregon State Beavers are a favorite draw for sports enthusiasts. Home games of OSU football attract as many as 46,300 spectators. Basketball games, gymnastics meets and baseball games are major events as well. In 2006 and 2007, the Oregon State Beavers baseball team won the Pac-10 Championship and the NCAA National Championship.
