early all of California is within a one-day driving distance from Davis. Located in Yolo County, in the Central Valley of northern California, Davis is situated 11 miles west of Sacramento, 385 miles north of Los Angeles and 72 miles northeast of San Francisco. Davis is just 15 minutes from the state capital, museums and other metropolitan attractions. To the east of the city lie the Sacramento and American rivers along with historic gold country, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The San Francisco Bay area, the redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean are to the west. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region lies to the south. Routes to and from Davis include Interstate 80 running east and west and Interstate 5 running north and south. Highways 113 and 128 also provide direct access to the city.

he first city (2005) to receive the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Communities Award at the Platinum level, Davis has become a national model for the integration of bicycling into the infrastructure of the community. In the 1960s, citizens lobbied for lanes to make bike travel safer. Ever since 1967, bike transportation in Davis has been oriented to bicycling with approximately 33 percent of residents using bikes as their primary mode of transportation.
As a result of this approach, Davis is credited with the following: d A comprehensive system of bicycle routes d Bikeway/street grade separations d In the 1980s, greenways were added to the program d Uniform design standards for bike lanes and paths d Subdivision codes requiring bike facilities in new developments d Adoption of Davis bikeway standards as state and federal standards d A bike culture that was preserved and expanded

examples include: Marrone Bio Innovations, which discovers, develops and markets effective and environmentally responsible natural products that focus on unmet needs for weed, pest and plant disease management, and Schilling Robotics, a leading producer of high technology systems for subsea exploration and production. In 2010, the Davis Farmers’ Market is celebrating its 34th year. In 2009, it was voted as America’s Favorite Farmers’ market by more than 10 percent of national voters and was bestowed the award by the American Farmland Trust. The market has a permanent location and structure located in Central Park with hours on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Davis is known for its innovation in the fields of biotechnology, medicine and other life sciences. Two
Especially connected with the University of California, Davis, the community’s contributions to agriculture and animal husbandry are many. As of 2008, more than 67 percent of the citizens of Davis possessed a college degree of a Bachelor of Arts or higher. The community is known for its liberal politics and a unique political style that has evolved over time. Farmers’ Market T
he Davis Farmers’ Market was started in 1975 by a small group of local organic farmers and community members. It was created with the objective to support local farmers while providing consumers with fresh, locally grown produce. The creation of the DFM was closely connected with the establishment of the Davis Food Co-Op, and in 1976, the City of Davis passed an ordinance to create an official framework for the DFM to operate within the city. After the California Department of Food and Agriculture established statewide regulations for direct marketing and certification of farmers’ markets in 1977, it became one of the first four certified farmers’ markets in the state. The Davis Farmers’ Market is now among the largest farmers’ markets in California, with an average of 85 vendors every Saturday. Over the course of the year, 180 different vendors attend the market. Operating year-round, the Saturday market attracts 5,000 to 7,000 people each week, and up to 10,000 during special events. The market still operates in its original Central Park location, but many improvements have been made to the park. For
instance, in 1984, a covered structure was built by the city of Davis, which now houses a large portion of the market’s vendors and makes yearround operation more viable. The market has become such an important part of the Davis community that today it is difficult for many people to imagine the community without the market. An area of the market open to community groups and political organizations and candidates has given a strong voice to local politics and community issues. Weekly events at the market, such as cooking demonstrations with food tasting and free recipes, provide education for the community about nutrition, diet, health and agriculture.

he city of Davis, founded in 1868, was originally named Davisville after prominent local farmer Jerome C. Davis. At that time, Davisville was a little village centered on grain crops and a train depot. According to the Woodland Democrat newspaper, Davisville was considered “the liveliest station on the California Pacific Railroad.” When a shift began from dry crops to irrigated agriculture, Davisville began exporting apples, peaches and lettuce, and with the aid of refrigerated train cars, Davisville farmers were able to meet the need of growing populations. After the addition of a new farming college, Davisville began to thrive. The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is closely tied to the city’s history. In the early 1900s, California’s urban areas were growing and demands were placed not only on agriculture, but on the dairy industry for largescale butter production. With a need to improve the science of butter-making and other farming methods, a campaign began to establish a new school for agricultural instruction and research. In 1908, the University Farm School was established. From those beginnings, UC Davis is now recognized internationally for its contributions to life sciences, agriculture, veterinary medicine,
biotechnology, medical technology and engineering. The university’s inception was a major turning point for Davisville. The Davisville Post Office shortened the city’s name to Davis, and the revision became official when the city was incorporated in March 1917. Soon urban amenities such as a water and sewage system, street lighting and street paving were installed. Many local improvements began, including the construction of a municipal building and the first city park. In the mid1900s, the population grew rapidly, with UC Davis being a major generator of growth. Unlike many other cities, Davis resisted pressure to build expansive shopping centers, instead adopting policies to preserve its smalltown feel. In the late 20th century, Davis began to focus on environmental conservation and the future shape of the city. With a current populace of approximately 71,000, Davis has evolved into a community internationally known for its commitment to environmental awareness and the employment of progressive and socially innovative programs. What was once a small farming village is now a remarkable city, proud of its past and looking forward to a bright future.

he Davis Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1905, and since its inception, it has had a commitment to the local community. With over 700 members, it is an invaluable resource to individuals, organizations and businesses, offering opportunities for growth and education, professional seminars and networking. Chamber leaders check in regularly with business owners to determine how to best serve their needs. The Chamber’s Government Relations Committee holds monthly meetings with representatives of the city to communicate about various issues. More than 80 percent of the adult population has completed a minimum of one year of college, more than 60 percent have achieved at least a four-year degree and more than 30 percent have earned a post-graduate degree. With quality teachers and parents playing an integral role in the educational process, Davis has one of the best public school systems in the area. Education from kindergarten through grade 12 is offered by the Davis Joint Unified School District. Its strong core educational program is complemented by the inclusion of dramatic arts, music, library programs, advanced placement classes, lifestyle issues, athletics and computer education. The Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) offers a wide range of services including operating schools for severely disabled children. Whether assisting a child working to overcome a speech disability or providing support to the visually or hearing impaired,
YCOE uses a number of resources to aid and enhance the learning process for those with special needs. Additionally, YCOE offers programs including reading, alternative education, interagency partnerships, program assessment, grant development, instructional support to schools, regional occupational programs and programs related to instructional technology. They also provide accounting and technology support services. Davis Adult School provides affordable quarterly classes in business and computer education, foreign languages, arts and crafts, fitness and health, auto mechanics, S.A.T. prep workshops, English as a second language and programs for older adults. There are also many preschools and day care facilities in Davis.

Sacramento City College is an open-access, comprehensive community college serving a diverse student population. There are many environmentally friendly homes in Davis. A prime example is Village Homes, located on the west side of Davis and built in 1975. These homes are highly efficient in design and use of water and energy. Narrow streets cut down on pavement heat. Common gardens and walkways behind homes, rather than in front, create a friendly and safe community. In 1999, Time magazine featured the Village Homes community, reporting that it is “one of the world’s best examples of sustainable development; it doesn’t degrade the environment that future generations will inherit.”

The community also promotes conservation efforts through solar-powered traffic signals and electric vehicles with charging stations. Additionally, Davis has tree-lined streets that are not only beautiful, but provide shade in the summer and retain heat during the winter. The historic Avenue of Trees, lining Russell Boulevard for more than a mile west of Highway 113, includes majestic black walnut trees planted before 1880. Numerous streets in Davis are quaint with older homes full of character and history. Many of Davis’ homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and with conservation and preservation in mind, new development has been carefully planned. One of these new developments is Mace Ranch on the east side of the city, with approximately 5,800 newer homes. Wildhorse, a master-planned community, has a golf course, parks and is host to many executive-style homes with four bedrooms or more. Lake Alhambra offers gorgeous custom homes encompassing a man-made lake. Additionally, programs for affordable housing and workforce housing are available. Housing prices in Davis are generally higher than the rest of the Greater Sacramento Area. This can be attributed to many reasons, including an excellent quality of life, a low crime rate, a premier local school system, the presence of UC Davis and a convenient location on the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and the Bay Area. he Davis City Council consists of an elected mayor, a mayor pro tempore and three council members. The Davis City Council holds regular meetings beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, with the exception of the fifth Tuesday of the month and the Tuesday prior to a holiday. Goals and key objectives of the council are to maintain and improve infrastructure, achieve long-term financial stability, enhance the vitality of downtown Davis, provide a mix of high-quality housing to meet community needs, conserve natural resources and protect the environment, ensure top-quality fire, police and emergency services, ensure organizational strength and promote economic development.

The Davis Police Department provides service within the city limits of Davis. The police department enforces laws and engages in crime prevention planning as well. The Davis Police department works closely with the Davis Fire Department and the University of California, Davis Police Department as well as Yolo County and regional law enforcement and criminal justice partners. The City of Davis Fire Department serves the City of Davis, the East Davis County Fire Protection District, No Man’s Land Fire Protection District and a portion of the Springlake Fire Protection District. The fire department provides emergency and prevention services from three fire stations. Department equipment consists of three engines, one rescue, one squad, two grass/wildland units, one water tender, two reserve engines and two antique fire apparatus.
