We are part of the Best Southwest Partnership, Dallas’ best kept secret! Duncanville is a community with a hometown feeling, a unique quality that distinguishes us from the rest. Yet, we are ideally located in one of the nation’s strongest economic epicenters, located less than 20 minutes from Dallas and Fort Worth. Each day we continue to build a vibrant, inclusive community, driven by a commitment to democratic principles and service above self. We are one of the most beautiful cities in the metroplex, known for being a warm and friendly community. Nestled between I-20 and Highway 67, the City of Duncanville offers quality shopping and fine dining. Duncanville also offers 16 parks including our centrally located Armstrong Park which hosts multiple events throughout the year such as the Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony, Fourth of July parade and festivities, summer concert series and much more. Excellence in education is the standard in Duncanville. We are proud to be home to one of the largest high schools in the nation. The Duncanville Independent School District has been recognized by the Texas Education Association for its exemplary schools in the district and numerous state athletic championship titles. After all, we have a history of housing one of the best Girls Varsity Basketball Teams and Coaches in the nation! In 2014, the team made it to the state finals for the third season in a row with a 105-game winning streak. These are just some of the reasons why people call Duncanville home. As you can see, it is easy to fall in love with our city. I am proud of our City and know that you will be too! Sincerely, David L. Green Duncanville Mayor

HISTORY In the spring of 1881, the Chicago, Texas & Mexican Central Railroad was completed, connecting Dallas with Cleburne. In the summer of that same year, Charles P. Nance stepped off the train into a field of sunflowers at a place known as Duncan Switch. In October 1881, the U.S. Postal Service gave Nance authorization to create a post office, and he called it “Duncanville.” Within a few months, mail would begin to arrive by rail. By 1883, the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad purchased the Chicago, Texas & Mexican Central Railroad and constructed a two-room depot at the rail switch. The community now had two general stores, a congregational hall and a post office – and plans for a cotton gin and a new schoolhouse were being discussed. During the early 1940s, World War II came to Duncanville, and began a new period of change and growth in the area. The Army Air Corps leased land in southwest Dallas County for use as a landing field for flight training. In 1943, the federal government constructed a military complex. By the war’s end, many local farmers had begun to sell off parcels of land for subdivisions and the City of Dallas began to expand its boundaries. When Dallas annexed land within two miles of the city, local residents voted to officially make Duncanville a city on Aug. 2, 1947. During the 1950s, the majority of newcomers who came to Duncanville arrived as government dependents. The Duncanville military base was now a command site for North American Air Defense, as well as a NIKE missile launch site for North Texas. Duncanville had grown to 3,000 residents. A new subdivision, Fairmeadows, was built, and it featured reasonably priced homes that adjoined two shopping centers. By 1964, Fairmeadows helped the population of Duncanville grow to 10,000 residents. Today the population is 39,221.

TRANSPORTATION & LOCATION Strategically bound by Interstate 20 and Highway 67, Duncanville offers convenient access to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, while remaining peacefully sheltered from big-city congestion. The city sits just to the west of Interstate 35 (a primary north/south route), while Interstate 20 borders the north side of the city. Highway 67 runs directly along the city’s east side. Within minutes of downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, Duncanville is convenient to two large airports: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (20 miles) and Love Field (15 miles). Rail service is also nearby for quick connections to downtown Dallas and Interstate 35 – the NAFTA gateway from the south.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Duncanville is home to a host of entertainment and cultural attractions that will keep the family busy all year-round. Duncanville Community Theatre, located at 106 S. Main St., brings independent, quality live theater to Duncanville and all of the Best Southwest area. Founded in 1988, the DCT produces a variety of shows annually; the season runs June 1 to May 31. To find out what is currently in production, visit www.dctheatre.org. DCT is featured on the cover and was renovated in the fall of 2007. Citizens and guests have enjoyed superb Community Theatre productions for 27 years. In addition, the Summer Concert Series is held each year in the Poe Hobden Amphitheater in Armstrong Park – compliments of the City of Duncanville. The International Museum of Cultures is a rarity in its category – a museum that captures the imagination of children as well as adults. Dioramas, both life-size and miniature, give a glimpse of far-flung areas from Papua, New Guinea in the South Pacific to Ecuador and Peru. It’s an exciting place and its colorful gift shop contains items from exotic corners of the world. Red Bird Skateland offers the Summer Social Skate and roller hockey, and is available for birthday parties. Red Bird Bowling Lanes offers league play and is great for birthday parties. The Chamber also holds its annual “Burgers, Bowling & Business” there. The city and local civic clubs offer a number of city-wide special events and activities throughout the year. Of course, every Christmas in Duncanville is kicked off by the Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony, and in February, the Lions Club holds its annual Las Vegas Night – featuring entertainment, door prizes, auction, food, faux gambling and a chance to hold fellowship with friends. The Duncanville Lions Club hosts the Fourth of July Parade in conjunction with the City’s Fourth of July Stars and Stripes Celebration. Fall is the time for the annual Duncanville Rotary Club Fish Fry and the annual Lions Club Pancake Breakfast. Both are time-honored community events with great food. The Duncanville Chamber of Commerce hosts “Big City Music Revue.” It is a concert night with Sean Mitchell & the Big City Music Revue and a live auction between performance acts.

PARKS & RECREATION Duncanville is home to some of the area’s best parks. The majority of the city’s 16 parks have gone through some type of renovation over the past several years, adding walking trails, playground equipment, picnic tables, benches, and pavilions. With 235 acres of parkland, Duncanville is the ideal destination for outdoor recreation. Lakeside Park, located off of Camp Wisdom at Hill City, contains the most fished urban lake that is part of the Neighborhood Fishing Program in the state of Texas. Regular fish stocking is provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife, which brings regular deliveries of catfish in the summer and trout in the winter. Armstrong Park is home to the Poe-Hobden Amphitheater, which hosts a summer concert series, July 4th celebration and a variety of citywide special events. The park is also home to Kidsville – a large volunteer-built creative playground. Encompassing the park is a one-mile walking trail that meanders through beautifully landscaped planter beds. A large pavilion is also available to rent for company picnics and gatherings. A special garden area is located off of Wheatland Road in Armstrong Park, which contains an Iris Garden, Perennial Garden and Rose Garden (with 225 different varieties of roses). The gardens are open to the public seven days a week and are definitely worth a visit. Other outdoor recreation opportunities include golf at nearby The Golf Club of Dallas and Thorntree Country Clubs and water activities at Joe Pool Lake (which affords visitors the chance to ski, swim, boat and fish on over 7,500 acres). In addition, Joe Pool Lake is surrounded by four parks, featuring hiking trails that wind through timberland and grasslands. The parks also include 10 miles of mountain bike trails. For indoor recreation, the Duncanville Recreation Center provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The Center has a comprehensive workout facility, indoor walking track, two basketball courts, pool tables, ping pong tables and more. The complex includes a game room, teen room (with games and a television) and three meeting rooms. The Duncanville Public Library offers a variety of resources, computer access, Wi-Fi and special programs. In addition to its print and multi-media collection, the library features two quiet study rooms, a children’s area and genealogy and local history areas. The D.L. Hopkins Senior Center is a large building complete with a full kitchen and a multipurpose room with a stage. This allows the center to host a number of senior classes and events. The Senior Center is also available for rental and is an excellent location for wedding receptions, birthday parties, etc.

EDUCATION At Duncanville ISD, You Can Do it All! Duncanville ISD offers a unique opportunity to its graduates: Duncanville High School is one of the few public high schools in the state of Texas where students can complete required courses, participate in extracurricular activities and learn a specific skill or trade without transferring to a separate campus. Duncanville ISD’s Career and Technical Education program is housed at the high school, allowing students to participate in traditional student life while pursuing any number of career fields. Duncanville ISD is a public school system that includes 18 campuses for grades K-12. The district is home to more than 59,000 residents and serves more than 13,000 students. STREET MARKET duncanSWITCH celebrates historic one-year anniversary It’s a glimpse to the past that is paving the way of the future. That’s how Steve Martin, Duncanville Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, describes the phenomenal success of the duncanSWITCH Outdoor Street Market, just recently celebrating an historic first anniversary. “It’s a step back in time with an eye to the future,” says Martin, who explains how on one Saturday each month tents rise up along the Main Street corridor at Center Street to form the duncanSWITCH Street Market, immediately adjacent to the railroad switch and the market’s namesake. “The concept harkens back to a time when neighbors came together as a community and business was conducted with a handshake.” According to Martin, a retired 40-year business owner and 36-year Chamber volunteer, the idea to host a monthly street market had its origins years ago when he and Monte Anderson, award-winning innovative developer known for restoring the historic Belmont Hotel on Fort Worth Avenue in North Oak Cliff, leader of the Design Studio Group and founding president of the Congress of New Urbanism North Texas Chapter, first discussed the need for a market or event to draw shoppers to the Main Street corridor. Out of the Duncanville Design Studio came duncanSWITCH, the once-a-month open air street market hosting a plethora of vendors, food and community fun. With a three-fold purpose to drive business to Main Street, to serve as an incubator for small business entrepreneurs, and to promote recycling by encouraging community members to recycle and resell old items stored in garages, the duncanSWITCH U

Practical plans for the open air street market were cemented through community meetings first held at the local Main Street Kitchen’s Deli, an old-fashioned soda fountain and sandwich shop. “From that group and meetings with the city, we held the first duncanSWITCH Street Market in April, 2014 with 30 open-air tents housing space for entrepreneurs to test the market and grow a following,” explains Martin. “Just one year later, we’re going strong, have almost doubled in size, and are looking to how we can continue expansion and growth – possibly expanding from Center to Davis Street.” One Saturday every month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., business in Duncanville takes a step back in time as entrepreneurs set up under the shade of tents in a “pop-up retail center environment” to offer everything from homemade barbecue, donuts, old-fashion homemade candies, snow cones, flowers, refurbished signs, and homemade crafts to pickles. Vendors like Vonda Pipkin of Pizzazzy Pickles, a math teacher by day at nearby Seagoville Middle School and pickle maker during her off hours, tempt shoppers with samples and sales. Pipkin’s jars of homemade crinkle-cut sweet and spicy pickles are a popular monthly staple at the market, with the brand’s popularity growing and public attention leading to deals with local restaurants and retail distributers. In addition to Pizzazzy Pickles, the market has helped grow businesses like Tilly’s Old Fashion Candies, Elite BBQ, Casa de Masa and Kona Ice Snowcones. The duncanSWITCH Market is part of a larger grassroots effort to revitalize the city. Duncanville Design Studio – a group of 20-plus business owners, city leaders and residents, meets once a month and is now a committee operating in partnership with the Chamber. The group’s vision to rejuvenate and enliven the city through low-cost, small scale project ideas has resulted in the development of city bike lanes, renovation of city parks, restoring old homes and painting a mural of Duncanville’s history on the Duncanville Feed Store. Other current projects include an Artists’ Bureau, and renovation of the old Feed Store on Main Street near the site of the duncanSWITCH Market. Martin, a 40-year resident of Duncanville, says it’s all about the community coming together to decide how Duncanville should look in the future. He says the market’s long-term sustainability is supported by its simple, free-flowing design – only one Main Street lane is closed during the market to keep traffic flowing through the corridor. ●

GOVERNMENT The City of Duncanville was incorporated in 1947 and operates under a councilmanager form of government – the most popular form of municipal government in the United States. Under Duncanville’s council-manager form of government, five singlemember district council members represent the residents in their geographic districts. One council member is elected at-large, as is the mayor, to represent all citizens. The council hires a city manager, who is responsible for administering and coordinating municipal operations and programs on a daily basis. While the entire city staff strives to provide quality services to residents, the Duncanville Police Department is one of the most well-trained and efficient operations in the nation. Additionally, two fire stations house our highly trained firefighters and paramedic staff. Both departments boast exceptional response times. One of Duncanville’s most prized assets is its citizens and their diversity. Notably, Duncanville was one of the first cities in Texas to become an NLC Inclusive Community. The goal of this community focus is to celebrate diversity throughout the city and to persuade people of all ethnicities, religions, and classes to join together for citywide responsibility. The Duncanville City Council just completed their 2016 planning retreat and adopted a new Mission Statement. The city council’s mission is to “Build a vibrant, inclusive organization, driven by a commitment to democratic principles and service before self.” They also adopted four pillars that support the Mission Statement and serve to frame future Council decision-making and organizational action to lead Duncanville to its bright and vibrant future. The four pillars are: (1) Most engaged citizens in America; (2) Best housing values in Texas; (3) Be the basketball capital of Texas; (4) Be the “edutainment” capital of Texas.

HOUSES OF WORSHIP Duncanville’s history is tied to its churches. Little Bethel was the first church in the settlement that would become Duncanville, and several of the churches established in the 19th century are still around today. The values and spirituality embraced by yesterday’s founding fathers remain a strong foundation for the diverse faith community. A representation of nearly every faith denomination is available to Duncanville citizens with over 50 houses of worship. As a community, Duncanville residents serve others through mission work in outreach ministries, canned food drives, clothing collections and also assist with disaster relief programs. Our churches work together for the betterment of the community, as a community, standing together as a collective hole.
