m ayor ’s w elcome letter dison Township is dedicated to supporting our business community and to promoting sensible growth throughout our community. My Administration is working diligently to attract new businesses, both large and small, into town and to sustain our existing ones. The Township and the Chamber of Commerce are now hosting networking breakfasts on the first Tuesday of each month in the Edison Council Chamber to give business leaders an opportunity to interact with municipal officials and department heads. Please join us. To meet our larger goals, I am proud to say Edison has taken several significant steps to enhance our local economy over the past year. Edison recently agreed to plan-modifications that will kick-start redevelopment of the 98-acre former Ford Assembly plant on Route 1. In the coming months, we expect Hartz Mountain to move forward with its Edison Towne Square project.

Edison also cleared the way for the Pennsylvaniabased Seagis Property Group to turn the former Frigidaire property at Vineyard Road and Route 27 into an ultra-modern, million-square-foot warehouse.

To encourage small business growth, Edison recently made changes to the Amboy Avenue Revitalization Zone – between Barton Street and Pierson Avenue – to allow ground-floor restaurants and other eateries including ones that offer live entertainment and bistro-style sidewalk service.
My Administration is committed to collaborating with business and always looking for new and better ways to assist our business community. The Chamber and its members are an invaluable resource and we welcome any opportunities to meet those economic goals.
These zoning modifications also allow the height of new commercial buildings on Amboy Avenue to be three-stories, creating more affordable rental space on upper floors. In turn, this should increase pedestrian traffic and help to support Amboy Avenue businesses. Recently, the Edison created a new “flexible business zone” along the south side of Woodbridge Avenue. This gives select property owners the ability to quickly convert their existing buildings to accommodate commercial, retail, professional office, warehouse or light industrial uses. Additionally, Edison hired a professional planning firm last year to analyze and identify the most promising locations to target redevelopment projects. We expect to see preliminary results in the coming months.

It is said Edison chose Menlo Park for his “invention factory” because it was the highest point along the Pennsylvania Railroad between New York and Philadelphia. Edison was originally known as Raritan Township when it was established more than three centuries ago. It has been touched by the Revolutionary War, serving as a home base for the Continental Army and even seeing action as a battleground. The Kilmer US Army Base was the staging area for troops heading to Europe in WWII and the Korean War. Notable locations include Wick Plaza on Route 1, Inman Grove Shopping Center on Inman and Grove avenues, Tano Mall on Amboy Avenue and Oak Tree Road Center on Oak Tree Road. The latter features a unique mix of small, independent businesses and restaurants, and also caters to the area’s growing Asian Indian population. edu c ation ince the earliest days of Clara Barton’s school on Amboy Avenue and Thomas Edison’s laboratory, Edison has always been known for its outstanding educational opportunities. The fifth largest district in the New Jersey with more than 15,000 students, Edison public educational system contains two high schools, four middle schools, 11 elementary schools and two pre-schools. In September 2014, New Jersey Monthly Magazine ranked JP Stevens High School as 30th and Edison High School as 135th out of 335 high schools within the state. The rankings are based on school achievement which is determined by the Advanced Placement courses offered and taken.

The District boasts 19 AP courses at both schools with over 900 students taking a total of 1700 exams. Student performance is also high-ranking including 93.8% of the District’s students scoring 3 or more on the AP Exams, SAT scores exceeding State average and graduation rates well above the state average. JP Stevens and Edison High School are both accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Each year graduates from both of Edison’s high schools get accepted into the nation’s top colleges and universities.

Students in Edison’s public schools are exposed to 21st Century learning as all are prepared to be college and career ready. The District’s commitment to technology includes all classrooms in grades Pre-K through 8 utilizing interactive Promethean Boards, and high school classrooms outfitted with Smart Boards, Promethean Boards or Proximas. The media centers in all District schools have been redesigned and upgraded to include the latest computers and e-readers. In September 2014, the District began its one-to-one initiative, with students in grades 3 through 5 receiving Chromebooks as the first step towards bringing content to students in a digital format rather than traditional print. Students in grades 6 through 8 will received Chromebooks in September 2015.

Edison also has many high quality private schools that draw students to the community, including the Wardlaw-Hartridge School, St. Joseph’s High School, Bishop George Ahr High School and Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva.

Edison is also home to Middlesex County College (MCC) which currently enrolls more than 12,000 students in a variety of majors. The college is situated on 200 acres and offers a comprehensive curriculum designed for one of the most diverse student bodies in the country. Daytime and evening classes offer students the opportunity to pursue vocational fields such as computer maintenance, hotel management or practical nursing or use their MCC coursework to build a strong foundation as they continue their higher education in four year schools after graduation with majors in business, education, performing arts among others. Rutgers University is a 10 minute drive from Edison. Residents also have the opportunity to gain vocational or technical training at Lincoln Tech, Middlesex County Vocational & Technical School and DeVry University.

Edison is proud of its public library system with a main library on Plainfield Avenue and two branches, one on Grove Avenue and the other in the Clara Barton area on Hoover Avenue. The Library also has a Bookmobile that visits pre-schools, senior centers and social clubs on a published schedule throughout the year.
