MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

stablished in 1890, the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce has long played a pivotal role in Fremontâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s development. Today, with over 600 members and more than 1,100 active individuals providing leadership and energy, the Chamber continues to help guide Fremont to beneficial outcomes for its residents.

Leadership Fremont program and the introduction of the Youth Leadership Academy, which is aimed at challenging high school juniors to take a more prominent and active role in shaping our community. Adding to these professional programs, the Chamber recently assisted in the creation of a Young Professionals group, which will offer networking and social opportunities.

Led by an active Board of Directors, our standing councils focus on programs of work in Business Development, Government Affairs, Higher Education, Ag-Business & Natural Resources, and Membership Services. There are several task forces and other special initiatives that also support attainment of community and Chamber priorities.

Nearly every corner of our community and its economy is touched in some way by the Chamber and its volunteers. Members connect, network, socialize and do business through the Chamber. With the recent enhancement to our Membership Investment program and the introduction of our new website, members have more opportunity to communicate, collaborate and add value to their business ventures.

s summer drew to its end in 1856, seven land speculators finalized their plans to build a new town along the banks of the Platte River where pioneers had been making the difficult trek west across Nebraska. Land was claimed for the town they would call Fremont, naming it for the “pathfinder and famous explorer, General John C. Fremont,” who had explored the region.

For them, this location was special because of the fertile flat land between the shallow Platte River to the south and the meandering Elkhorn River to the north. They also had a hunch the transcontinental railroad would follow the “Great Platte River Road” west, and they were right. Their vision soon became a reality and by 1906 three major railroads had tracks though the city. With the railroads came people. And industry.

The population exploded from less than 1,200 people in 1870 to more than 3,000 in 1880, and then it more than doubled again to 6,747 in 1890. Things slowed a bit over the next three decades, but by 1930 Fremont’s population had swelled to more than 11,400. Raw materials were shipped in and finished products shipped out in all directions to all parts of the country. In 1925, Fremont’s rail system was boasting 76 railroad trains out of Fremont every 24 hours— 39 passenger,

33 freight and four mail. Fremont became a manufacturing center filled with foundries, broom factories, carriage works, cigar factories, wagon makers, a sawmill and numerous other industries.

Manufacturing was not the only economic pillar supporting Fremont’s growth. It was also a regional agricultural center. In 1890, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce promoted Fremont as the “City where agriculture and industry meet.” Farmers formed a wide trade area and food processors not only bought local farm Ag Equipment • Stihl Products products but also Lawn & Garden Equipment provided jobs for area Service • Parts • Toys citizens. remains a vibrant and cutting-edge agribusiness center. As the city’s industrial sector continued to grow, Fremont needed services to meet the needs of its residents. Some of Fremont’s first businesses are still operating and serving the community today. Stage lines started in 1859, a telegraph was built in 1860 and Fremont became the county seat of Dodge County in 1860. First opened in 1866, Fremont National Bank is still operating today. The Fremont Tribune published their first issue on July 24, 1868, and it continues to be Fremont’s only local daily paper. During the 1880s, a wave of prosperity in Fremont’s downtown area sprouted beautiful brick buildings used for stores and hotels. The historic area is still bustling with activity today and is home to restaurants, boutiques, retail and antique stores. After undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation, the downtown area is readying itself for another generation of shoppers. Like today, the town’s early founders recognized the importance of preparing students for jobs and for future development. As a result, the first school opened in 1858, just two years after the town was platted. In 1884, Fremont became a college town. The school originated as Fremont Normal School, then changed to Fremont College and later Midland Lutheran College. Today Midland University is a growing residential liberal arts college that prides itself on its personalized approach to preparing students. Many travelers saw the promise in Fremont and made it their journey’s destination rather than a place they’d planned to travel through. Beginning in 1846, pioneers numbering in the tens of thousands passed through this area on westward treks that often had Utah, California or Oregon as

their goal. The site of the Fremont’s Barnard Park was once a camp for Mormons seeking a place of rest along the Mormon Trail. The Lincoln Highway, America’s Main Street, was the first paved coast-to-coast highway and passed through Fremont. Now known as US Highway 30, many of the historical markers are still in place and three blocks of the original brick are still traveled thru town. Early Fremont settlers can best be described as dreamers and doers; in today’s residents we still see traces of those traits. We are dedicated to education, we are a college town, we have a strong manufacturing and transportation sector and agriculture remains at the center of a diversified food and fuel economy that is still growing and thriving. The community features a kind of a Main Street America vibe but with a contemporary twist. Everything you need or want is within easy reach. Major highways connect you quickly and easily to I-80 and I-29. In fact, the western boundaries of Omaha are only 20 minutes away on four-lane US 275, and Lincoln is 45 minutes away on US 77. Connecting you around town the City of Fremont operates a local handicap accessible public bus service with scheduled routes featuring very low fares, and there is a private taxi service.

Fremont Family YMCA offers outstanding recreational programs for residents young and the young-at-heart as the secondlargest YMCA in the U.S. The 122-year old organization occupies 200,000 square feet at its current location. The Y also features Sidner Ice Arena, an indoor Olympic-sized sheet of ice, plus two indoor pools, four full-sized gyms, a 1/10-mile walk/jog track, five indoor tennis courts,

three racquetball courts, a gymnastic center, the Hazel R. One of eastern Nebraska’s most popular recreation areas, Fremont State Lakes Recreation Area has about 40 land acres and nearly 300 water acres in 20 sandpit lakes. Dating to December 14, 1888, when the Love-Larsen Opera House debuted with its first performance, Fremont has had a passion for cultural pursuits. This ornate five-story building was considered one of the finest buildings in the state, with a seating capacity of 1,100. In 1975 it became the first building in Fremont to join the National Registry of Historic Places and today, after a multi-milliondollar restoration, it is again serving the community as a cultural gathering place.

Nearby, an old Post Office built in 1894 for $60,000 is a rare example of a Romanesque style used only twice in the United States. The other is in Washington, D.C. Today, the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce occupies the building along with a number of other organizations devoted to community development. In an upstairs gallery the Chamber honors town founders and business people who have contributed to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and success of the years. Other notable architectural sites include the Louis E. May Museum, which was built by Fremontâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first mayor, Theron Nye, in 1874. It is a 25-room mansion now housing the collections of the Historical Society for Dodge County. It is a wonderfully preserved gem with art glass windows, exceptional tile work, large mantles and beautiful paneling of oak and mahogany. Other magnificent examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture line the streets of downtown as well as residential neighborhoods. Fremont also has a flourishing arts community as well as an art association,

fine arts college that features visual and performing arts programs, Midland students and faculty enrich our entire community with their regular performances, displays and enthusiasm. he education community in Fremont is accustomed to setting and exceeding rigorous standards – it’s a theme embraced by public and private education providers at every level in Fremont.

Fremont Public Schools was the first in Nebraska to receive District Accreditation, the highest and most rigorous level of recognition, from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement on September 7, 2006. In April of 2011, Fremont Public Schools scored another “first” by earning a five-year extension to accreditation by AdvancED, the reconstituted accrediting agency of the combined North Central and Southern Associations. Fremont’s public school district employs over 375 certified teachers whose

commitment to 4,540 students translates to 80 percent of FHS grads attending postsecondary institutions. Nine neighborhood elementary schools serve about 2,080 students in kindergarten through 4th grade. A new middle school is home to more than 900 sixth through eighth grade students and in 2012 a new, state-of-the-art fifth through sixth grade school will serve 800 students. Fremont

High School, with 1,350 students in grades nine through 12, was recently renovated with the addition of more than 50,000 square feet of additional classroom and activity space. More infrastructure upgrades are now in progress. Faith-based schools offer parents high quality alternatives to public schools. Academic or extra-curricular scholarships were awarded to 74 percent of the 2011 graduates. Over 90 percent of students are involved in at least one extracurricular activity. The Bergan campus is comprised of a preschool/elementary building (grades preschool through sixth) and a middle school/high school building (grades seventh through twelfth). Trinity Lutheran has provided a faithcentered education since 1884. Academics are enhanced through technology such as SMART boards in every classroom, a media center and wireless mobile computer labs. More than 85 percent of Trinity’s students score at or above grade level on standardized testing and over 35 percent were top 20 percent compared to students across the country. Fremont is also home to Metropolitan Community College, now entering its 36th year. The Fremont Police Department also plays a pivotal role in a regional drug enforcement group, the III Corps Drug Task Force, along with the city of Blair, the sheriff offices of Dodge and Cuming counties and the Nebraska State Patrol.

There are also the Nebraska Health and Human Services, Crisis Center for Domestic Abuse/Sexual Assault, a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program, Dodge County Humane Society and a local MADD chapter.
