estled on Milwaukee’s northwest side is the charming community of Germantown. The area offers a pleasing, small-town character enhanced by all the modern amenities of a first class suburb. Germantown residents take advantage of exceptional schools, modern healthcare providers, attractive real estate, well-maintained parks and facilities as well as a fantastic medley of unique shops and local restaurants. And while the village and its surrounding area has worked hard to provide its residential base with the finest in big-city conveniences, it has equally worked hard to maintain its rich German heritage and beautiful traditional fachwerk architecture. The village of Germantown is recognized as Washington County’s oldest settled town, having enticed a great number of German settlers back in the 1840s. The area served as a crossroads of sorts, with travelers coming through to reach locations to the north and south. As a result of this traffic and the settlement’s ideal locale near Milwaukee, many businesses established residence here in order to accommodate the needs of the many passersby.
The Germantown area continued to develop with the welcoming of two major railroads and the discovery of limestone formations. As Germantown’s economic vitality boomed, its population steadily increased. Today, the village of Germantown is a solid community of just under 20,000, with the surrounding communities comprising Washington County totaling nearly 132,000 people. The Germantown area has seen incredible growth, both residentially and economically, over the last 10-plus years. Its location on Milwaukee’s northwest side appeals to suburban lifestyles, while its friendly demeanor and preservation of natural green space and outdoor recreational areas appeal to a more rural way of living. The area continues to be an attractive place for single professionals, retirees and families alike, earning spots on Money magazine’s list of “Great American Towns; Best Places to Live” in 2007, 20009 and 2011 and, most recently, garnering recognition as one of Family Circle magazine’s “Ten Best Towns for Families” in 2011. Whether you live here, commute from out of town or are just visiting, the Germantown area welcomes all to come experience its unique way of life—Willkommen!

deally positioned just 30 minutes northwest of Milwaukee in growing Washington County, the Germantown area features an enviable location for both residential living and business operations. Its strategic suburban locale provides excellent connectivity via highway, rail, public transportation and air service. Conveniently located U.S., state and county highway systems, along with a number of local thoroughfares, ensure efficient road travel throughout the Germantown area and beyond. U.S. Routes 41 and 45 converge in Germantown’s northwest corner, offering a link to Wisconsin’s southern and northernmost communities. Interstate 43 is a short 20 minutes east of the village; Interstate 94 is approximately 20 minutes to the south.
Affordable public transportation services operated by Washington County are readily available in town. In addition to its Shared-Ride Taxi service is the Washington County Commuter Express, which provides a weekday connection to and from the Milwaukee metropolitan area. One of three parkand-ride lots is located in Germantown at the corner of Highway 41/45 and Lannon Road. Corporate and general aviation services are available at nearby municipal airports in West Bend and Hartford, while extended commercial air travel is provided at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport. Amtrak passenger rail service is also offered in Milwaukee, and businesses utilize the freight rail services of the Canadian National Railway and Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Company.

ermantown is part of one of Wisconsin’s fastest-growing regions and though the community has itself experienced much in the way of residential and economic growth, it has successfully maintained a small-town charm that is cherished by nearly 20,000 residents. As new businesses continue to move into the community, more and more employees are choosing to relocate to Germantown, and with its location near downtown Milwaukee, the area has become a desirable place for commuters as well. The Germantown area has preserved much of its natural land area, giving way to a quiet, more bucolic environment not typically found in the suburbs. But, Germantown is not rural in all senses; it features a wide assortment of big-city amenities ranging from excellent schools and hospitals to quality public services, recreational spaces and outlets for shopping, dining and entertainment. In addition, the area offers an excellent selection of home options for both buyers and renters. Prospective homebuyers discover a unique mix of old and new real estate throughout Germantown, which includes both sprawling and modest single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Ample housing opportunities are also available through rental homes and apartment units. The quality of life is truly second-to-none in the Germantown area—and it has not gone unnoticed. The community has been recognized as one of Money magazine’s “Great American Towns; Best Places to Live” (2007, 2009, 2011) and was recently noted among Family Circle magazine’s “Ten Best Towns for Families” (2011). For more information on residential life in the Germantown area, visit www.germantownchamber.org.

ermantown area residents and visitors have ready access to a multitude of wellmaintained municipal, county and state-operated park sites, which come together to offer an exhaustive list of outdoor activities. From tennis and basketball courts, trail systems and playground equipment to athletic fields, ball parks and opportunities for water sports, the area’s park sites are favorite year-round destinations. The village of Germantown Park & Recreation Department operates more than a dozen parks and facilities throughout the community, including an environmental park, sports complexes, a historical park and several neighborhood parks. Washington County’s park system also plays a role in Germantown’s recreational landscape. Homestead Hollow County Park spans 105 acres along Freistadt Road in Germantown and features: a picnic area, hiking and crosscountry skiing trails, a sledding hill, a fishing pond, playground equipment, soccer fields and more. Additionally, Kettle Moraine State Park’s Northern Unit stretches into Washington County just west of Germantown. Both the village of Germantown and Washington County offer a year-round list of recreational programming for all ages, as does the nearby Tri-County YMCA in Menomonee Falls. The newly renovated Y features a pool, a new wellness center, renovated classroom space and locker rooms, new spin and group exercise studios and updates to various other on-site facilities.
Course in Richfield and Silver Spring Country Club in Menomonee Falls are also excellent choices in the immediate area. In all, there are 45 golf courses located within a 15-mile radius of the heart of Germantown.
Golfers also have plenty of options when it comes to finding a challenging game on the greens. Germantown is home to two well-manicured courses—Blackstone Creek Golf Club and Riversbend Golf Course. Kettle Hills Golf

ermantown’s eclectic medley of specialty and antique shops, major retail chains and delicious eateries attract shoppers and diners from all over the area.
Both Mequon Road, home to the modern Markt Platz, and Main Street Germantown are lined by a number of distinct local merchants. Mequon Road is characterized by a unique European environment, as is the Main Street district, which displays traditional German fachwerk architecture. Shoppers looking for more well-known retailers regularly hit both County Line Road and Appleton Avenue. In addition to these sites, be sure to make a stop at the seasonal Germantown Farmers’ Market at Germantown Center Mall. The market, which is full of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods and more, runs from early May through October. After finding that perfect gift or everyday necessity, take a seat at one of the area’s many restaurants. Within a 20-minute radius of Germantown are more than 50 places to eat. Diners have the choice of a variety of environs—from casual pubs and grilles to fancier fine dining establishments—and the menus are just as wide-ranging. Pizza, pasta, seafood, hamburgers, salads, soups and tasty ethnic fare are among the many delectable choices. The area also offers charming coffeehouses and fast-food places for the diner on the go.
