Transforming young lives through music for 50 years
G l e n e l ly n
Anima Young Singers
Anima — Young Singers of Greater Chicago (formerly the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus) has proudly called Glen Ellyn home since 1964. Recognized for its musical excellence, effective educational philosophy, creative programming and community outreach, Anima brings rich cultural opportunities to children from Glen Ellyn and beyond in the greater Chicago area. This season marks the group’s 50th year of transforming young lives through music. Anima holds a Summer Music Academy for students in grades five through nine, and two Summer Sing Camps — one for students entering kindergarten and first grade, and another for students entering grades two through four. “Our summer camps are a great way to extend our mission of changing young lives through excellence in music out into the community,” says Nondi Orazi, executive director of the chorus. “For those students who are unable to join Anima during the school year, these camps give them another opportunity to enjoy a week of unique and exhilarating music-making.” Once camps wrap up, Anima’s advanced ensemble — Touring Chorus — will kick off the group’s 50th
anniversary season with a tour to British Columbia and Alaska. “The chorus has lots of historic ties with composers and other youth choirs in this region,” said Emily Ellsoworth, Anima artistic director. “We felt that taking our energy, passion and excitement to our own continent and reconnecting with our past was a great way to celebrate our anniversary. “We’ve commissioned American composer Lita Grier to write a work celebrating North America’s First Nations and Native American peoples to take with us on this North American tour. The musical and cultural exchanges will be a remarkable experience for the 50 participants.” Upon its return home, Anima will host a choir on tour in the U.S. as part of another great choral exchange — this time involving singers from the United Kingdom. Exposure to other cultures, both through traveling and hosting, is one of the many benefits students gain from participating in Anima’s programs. In its 50-year history, Anima has become one of the nation’s leading community youth choruses, and has served as an artistic and educational model across North America for decades.
The Anima curriculum uses highquality repertoire from a wide variety of musical styles, and centers around the belief that all children are inherently musical. Through in-depth study, weekly rehearsals and performances, students experience a high level of accomplishment that leads to informed, expressive and empowered singing, and a commitment to excellence in all areas of their lives. Anima helps “ordinary” young people experience the extraordinary. The chorus has traveled to six continents,
won four Grammy awards, has commissioned more than 70 new works and frequently performs with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other great professional organizations. Anima is gearing up for fall registration and has weekly programs for any students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. All children are welcome and no prior experience is necessary for the younger ensembles. For more information, contact (630) 858-2471 and www.animasingers.org.

The Lakeside Pavilion’s inaugural summer season features three series: concerts, movies and theater. Events of the free 2014 Starlight Concert Series will take place at 7:30 p.m. Fridays from July 18 to Aug. 15. The series will include performances by the Beatles tribute band, American English (July 18); jazz guitarist Bobby Broom and the Bobby Broom Trio (July 25); the ABBA tribute band “Abbamania” (Aug. 1); the Grammy nominated blues/roots group The Holmes Brothers (Aug. 8); and a pops concert of Broadway and film tunes performed by New Philharmonic, the professional Glen Ellyn-based symphony orchestra under the direction of Maestro Kirk Muspratt (Aug. 15). (1980; rated R), starring John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, July 31; and Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis’ paranormal hit “Ghostbusters” (1984; rated PG) Aug. 7. The 2014 Starlight Family Theater Series opens with Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo,” adapted by Christopher M. Walsh and staged by COD Director of Theatre Connie Canaday Howard. Performances run 7 p.m. July 3-13. Tickets are $10 for adults and $9 for students and seniors. Families with children will enjoy the free performance of “The Troll Booth” directed by Amelia Barrett, COD associate professor of theater, at 5 p.m. July 5. For tickets or more information about any of these events, call (630) 942-4000 or visit www.AtTheMAC.org. The new Cleve Carney Art Gallery, which opened in February, hosts a unique exhibit of photographer Vivian Maier’s work, “Vivian Maier: Exposed,” through Aug. 16. Born in New York City in 1926, Maier produced more than 100,000 negatives during her life, most during the 40 years she worked as a nanny in Chicago, but showed them to very few people. Her work remained unknown until its discovery in 2007, shortly before her death in 2009. Since then, her work has ignited passion in photography buffs and art enthusiasts worldwide. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The Cleve Carney Art Gallery is generally open one hour prior to MAC performances. For details about the exhibition and related events, visit www.cod.edu/gallery or call (630) 942-3206.

DuPage County Forest Preserve District
It really won’t be fair. It took spring an eternity to arrive, but summer will be gone before we know it. Fortunately, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has plenty of ways to get the most of every day. The district has been protecting great natural areas for almost 100 years and today welcomes 4 million visitors annually to the county’s 25,000 acres of prairies, woodlands and wetlands, 145 miles of trails, and 60 forest preserves, which include a few destinations in and around Glen Ellyn. Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn, is the district’s native wildlife rehabilitation center. It admits more than 8,000 injured and orphaned animals each year for care and medical treatment, but also serves as an educational resource for people who are looking for ways to better coexist with their wildlife neighbors. Year-round, adults, children, families and groups join programs and hikes that focus on insects, birds of prey, mammals and natural history. Each summer, kids ages 6 to 8 learn about the environment and how they’re part of nature during the fourday “Wildlife Explorers” day camp. Willowbrook is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free, although donations are always appreciated. At the center, native animals with permanent disabilities — golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, owls, red foxes, groundhogs, raccoons, opossums, even a bobcat — live full-time along an outdoor exhibit trail. Nearby, a colorful butterfly garden demonstrates how to attract these popular insects to any backyard. Behind these areas, a self-guided Nature Trail loops through 40 acres of

prairie, savanna, woodland and wetland habitats. Inside the visitor center, guests can see Willowbrook’s smaller residents and the nursery or pick up general forest preserve and wildlife information (or a little something from the gift shop). If weather allows, a new, expanded parking lot — — part of the first phase of major renovations at the center — should be open by mid-June, but you can always get updates by calling Willowbrook Wildlife Center at (630) 9426200 or visiting dupageforest.org/

willowbrook. If you call for help with wildlife issues and the center is closed, recorded messages offer species-specific advice. Just five miles northeast of Willowbrook at Route 53 and St. Charles Road is the 263-acre Churchill Woods Forest Preserve. Like most forest preserves, Churchill Woods is open daily from one hour after sunrise until one hour after sunset. On the south side of St. Charles, flagstone terraces offer anglers convenient access to bluegill, carp, crappie, sunfish and largemouth bass along the East Branch DuPage River. (Anglers 16 and older who are not disabled must have valid Illinois fishing licenses.) An inviting pedestrian bridge links the shoreline with an island that’s perfect for picnicking. Babcock Grove, a savanna with 150-year-old oaks, lines both sides of St. Charles Road, and at the far northeast corner of the preserve lies the state-designated Churchill Prairie Nature Preserve, one of the county’s few remaining native prairies and home to several state-endangered and threatened species. To protect this fragile habitat, and in accordance with the Illinois Natural Areas Preservation Act, bicycles, horses and pets must remain on the 0.6-mile Regional Trail when enjoying the prairie’s striking landscape. The short segment offers a pleasant side excursion for people using the Great Western Trail, which runs along

Churchill Woods’ northern edge. Five miles south of Churchill Woods on Route 53 at Butterfield Road is a relatively newer forest preserve, the 393acre Hidden Lake. Although the true Hidden Lake is a glacier-dug pond tucked away among mature oaks and hickories, anglers can fish for bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish at Round Meadow and Eagle lakes near the parking lot, which is also a trailhead for the forest preserve’s 2-mile trail system. Visitors with valid forest preserve district permits can also use select watercraft on Round Meadow Lake and can purchase daily permits on site. For information on any of DuPage County’s 60 forest preserves, five education centers and scores of recreational activities, call (630) 933-7200 or visit dupageforest.org, where you’ll also link to our e-newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube pages. And we’ll see you this summer!

Natural beauty, fascinating history and family fun are close by at Cantigny in Wheaton. The first thing visitors will notice this summer is the park’s sparkling new entrance on Winfield Road just south of Roosevelt Road. After several years of planning and nine months of construction, the updated gateway promises easier access before and after major events thanks to additional entry and exit lanes, plus a new turn lane on Winfield Road for cars going north. Better visibility for the park from Winfield was another goal of the project. Landscaping will be completed in the coming weeks. The summer schedule at Cantigny is packed with activities and special events geared to all ages. Free Sunday afternoon concerts at the band shell continue at 3 p.m. all summer. A wide variety of musical acts are scheduled and posted on the all-new www.cantigny.org. As with most events at Cantigny, the concerts are free with $5 parking per car. The park also offers 2 p.m. Saturday concerts just for kids on June 29,
calling (630) 260-8162. You can also buy them inside the Cantigny Shop. Ongoing attractions at Cantigny include the Robert R. McCormick Museum, which offers a new exhibit exploring McCormick’s life as an innovator, journalist and philanthropist. The First Division Museum also has a must-see exhibit: “WE NEED YOU! Propaganda of the Great War.” Visitors will see several dozen vintage World War I posters and learn the stories behind them. The exhibit runs through Nov. 2. Admission to the museums as well as Cantigny’s wonderful gardens is free with paid parking. For details about the concerts and events mentioned here — and many more — visit www.cantigny.org. Park memberships can be purchased online too, for $5 off the regular price. Cantigny Golf is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014. If there is a golfer on your summer gift list, check out the Anniversary Club, a great value for $199. To learn more or book a tee time, visit www.cantignygolf.com. Cantigny will be the proud host of the Illinois State Amateur Championship for the fourth time, July 15-17, and the Chicago Open returns to Cantigny Golf in October.
