A Brief History of

Graham County

nown as the “Gila Valley,” Graham County is rich in archeological history with wide evidence of prehistoric Native Americans that includes extensive irrigation canals, cliff dwellings, pueblo-type structures, artifacts and mounds. Even members of the renowned Coronado expeditions, circa 1540, wrote about the Pueblo Viejo, now present day Solomon, and the ruins of the Chichilticale, that is now San Jose, the first town of the Valley.

Exploration by U.S. troops established Camp Goodwin in the 1860s. Early Mormon pioneers soon followed, attracted by the rich, fertile soil along the Gila River that bisects the county from east to west. The pioneers began farming the valley in the 1870s and continue today, producing world renowned Pima and Upland Cotton. Ranching was a strong second with many Mexican settlers operating cattle and horse ranches. Mining grew and began to develop to become the dominant economy of the area.

Isadore Solomon was the first Jewish businessman of the area arriving with his wife, Anna, herself a businesswoman, and three children in 1876. Together they founded several businesses including the first bank in Solomon, eventually becoming the Valley National Bank. Isadore was instrumental in creating Graham County and bringing the county seat to Solomonville for 34 years. After an election in 1915, the county seat was moved back to Safford where it has remained to this day.

Graham County, known as the last safe haven for Geronimo, was largely inhabited by the Apache Nation. Geronimo, son-in-law to the revered Cochise, was a tribal leader of the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache, and led the last of the Indian fights. He would finally surrender to the U.S. Army in 1886. 

Observatory

he Observatory Base Camp is located six miles south of Safford, Arizona on State Route 366, also known as Swift Trail; on the east side of Mt. Graham at the base of the mountain. The Base Camp is located immediately north of the Federal Correctional Institution. Please check in with the office staff to insure your permits are in order and to â&#x20AC;&#x153;log inâ&#x20AC;? your presence at the observatory. The Base Camp office opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, Monday through Friday except for holidays. Mt. Graham International Observatory was conceived in the early 1980s. Two telescopes, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope,

were dedicated in 1993. The Large Binocular Telescope was dedicated in 2004. Steward Observatory, the research arm for the Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, was founded in 1917. The Observatory operates research facilities at Kitt Peak, Mt. Lemmon, Mt. Hopkins and Mt. Graham, Arizona. The Mt. Graham International Observatory is a component of Steward Observatory and is the umbrella organization for the research organizations located at the Mt. Graham research site. The Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, a joint project of the Vatican Observatory, Vatican City, and Steward Observatory, began scientific observation in September, 1994. The Submillimeter Telescope, a partnership between Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, located in Bonn, Germany, and Steward Observatory, commenced scientific observations in early 1995.

Mt. Graham International Observatory is also home to the largest telescope in the world. The Large Binocular Telesope (LBT), will provide new and more powerful views of deep space, including potentially answering fundamental questions about the origins of the universe and mysterious worlds in other planetary systems.

The tour features a trip up scenic Mount Graham, focusing on the mountain’s rich geology, history, and diversity of life; a lunch near the summit of the mountain; and a guided tour of the observatory facility. And, yes, Billy the Kid also walked the mountain paths back in the 1870s ... Back at Gov Aker Observatory, the 20” Tinsley Cassegrain reflector is open to the public for viewing the heavens after sunset on most Saturday evenings. 

Mt. Graham International Observatory conducts weekend tours for interested people. With weather permitting, the tours begin in mid-May and go through mid-November.

raham County is nestled in scenic southeastern Arizona less than three hours from the metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Tucson. The county’s three incorporated cities (Pima, Thatcher, and Safford) are nestled in northcentral Graham County connected by U.S. Route 70. Composed of mostly high desert plains and surrounded by beautiful mountains, Graham County was actually almost twice its current landmass of 4,630 square miles before the formation of Greenlee County. Twenty-two square miles of the county are comprised of water and the San Carlos Indian Reservation occupies approximately one third of the area.

Tours Black Hills Back Country Byway This rugged 21-mile stretch of unpaved roadway is located between Safford and Clifton, with easy access via U.S. 191. The Black Hills Back Country Byway, which represents the northern end of the Peloncillo Mountains, is an historic and cultural route with great opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, rock collecting and picnicking are just some of the activities found along this byway. Interpretive brochures are available from the Graham County Chamber of Commerce. Coronado Trail Scenic Byway Stretching over 123 miles of unique vistas, featuring high desert and forest areas, the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway is steeped in historical significance. It is said that portions of the trail were traveled by Francisco de Coronado around 1540. Stop at such significant sites as: the Arrow Tree, Gray’s Peak picnic area, and Blue Vista, or take advantage of the abundance of recreational opportunities offered.

Graham County Historic Walking & Driving Tour Grab a free brochure as a guide from the Chamber of Commerce and enjoy the unique historic sites of Graham County. The walking tour of Downtown Safford highlights 26 historic structures, including the Graham County Courthouse (c. 1916) and Safford City Hall (c. 1898), while the driving portion features a number of historic sites throughout Pima, Safford, Solomon and Thatcher. The majority of these buildings date back to the 20th century, with many still in use today. The Old West Highway Uncover over 600 years of Western history while traveling along the Old West Highway. This route was home to dangerous gunfighters, Apache warriors and unrecoverable gold, with popular features such as lost civilizations and the site of Billy the Kid’s first murder.

One interesting fact about the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway: it was originally known as U.S. 666, aptly nicknamed “The Devil’s Highway.” It was only a short time ago that the byway was renamed U.S. 191.

Mt. Graham (Pinaleno Mountains) Mt. Graham is the highest peak in the Pinaleno Mountain range, rising to more than 10,000 feet in elevation. The backdrop is amazing and offers visitors a variety of outdoor recreational options including rock climbing, hiking, crosscountry skiing, camping, fishing and much more. Guests have the chance to take a motor tour along Swift Trail (Highway 366) that begins at the base of the mountain, traveling approximately 35 miles up and ending at the top of Mt. Graham. More information can be obtained via the Safford Forest Ranger District. Salt River Canyon Known to many as the mini Grand Canyon, the Salt River Canyon is a 2,000-foot-deep river canyon bursting with history and winsome vistas. U.S. 60 winds through the canyon, which spans approximately nine miles from rim to rim. Visitors can view interpretive displays at the parking and rest area, while outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of such activities as camping, fishing, hiking and white-water rafting.

The last weekend in September is reserved for the annual SalsaFest, located downtown, in Safford’s Town Square. It was created by the Graham County Chamber of Commerce and hosted by the Safford Lions Club. SalsaFest offers two days full of family entertainment, centered around what else: salsa! Take part in the salsa making competition and the jalapeno and salsa eating contest; browse through local crafts and the fresh marketplace; or sit back and enjoy live entertainment and food demonstrations. Attractions Dankworth Village Dankworth Village, an outdoor classroom is located near Dankworth Pond. This village features a field exhibit of replicated archaeological sites, dwellings and activity areas depicting life of the Southwest’s early inhabitants (from 9000 BC to the 1600s). An Activity Guide for use at the site is available at the BLM office.

Eastern Arizona Museum & Historical Society Situated in Pima, the Eastern Arizona Museum and Historical Society is continuing to expand its facility, which houses a wide range of displays, photographs and archives portraying life from the pioneer days to the present. In development on the grounds of the museum is an automotive and agricultural museum.

Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus EAC’s Discovery Park Campus is a multi-purpose educational facility placing emphasis on the science and culture of the Gila Valley. This center offers an assortment of activities and hands-on exhibits simultaneously promoting fun and education. The majority of Discovery Park’s attractions can be found at the Gov. Aker Observatory, which is lined with a series of galleries. Additional features include Nature’s Hideaway, equipped with a number of trails for hiking, jogging and more, and the Circle D Ranch, a perfect place for a variety of gatherings and events. San Carlos Apache Cultural Center Standing as the first of its kind on the San Carlos Reservation, the San Carlos Apache Cultural Center is dedicated to telling the story of the Apaches from the tribe’s point of view. Learn about the Apaches’ cultural history through informational displays of the tribe’s past and present, and browse through the beautiful works of art from Apache artists and craftspeople. 

The Large Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO) is bringing to today’s world some of the capabilities the next generation of telescopes will bring in a decade from now. One of the most exciting endeavors of all times is the current search for planets around other stars which could harbor conditions (not too cold, not too warm, made of rocks and not just gaseous, with an atmosphere) suitable for the existence of life as we know it. In other words, Earth-like planets! With its two giant mirrors on a same mount, LBTO will significantly contribute to the world-wide effort undertaken to better understand how planets form in the early days of planetary system formation, to follow up the observations made from satellites in order to confirm the existence of new extrasolar planets, and to help characterize their properties such as their size or the characteristics of their atmosphere. compared to our sun (~4.6 billion-yearold). Its four known planets circled on the picture and marked b,c,d and e, are larger that Jupiter. The two images shows the planetary system in two different colors in the infrared, which are not visible to the human eye.

utdoor enthusiasts can enjoy active sports like hiking and off-roading to peaceful activities like bird watching or soaking in a hot spring. Opportunities for recreation span the entire Gila Valley region, offering ample activities for all ages, skill levels and interests. Over 3.5 million acres of public lands await your enjoyment. Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness Area Accessible just 45 miles southwest of Safford, the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness Area is perfect for the outdoor lover. The canyon is comprised of rugged terrain that challenges hikers of all levels. Aravaipa Creek is stocked with a number of native fish species, predominantly minnow and sucker fish. Wildlife is abundant here, with many visiting for the outstanding bird watching opportunities. The area has seen more than 200 different bird species. Camping is permitted throughout the wilderness area.

Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area Composed of 2,000 acres of rolling sand dunes, the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area is a haven for off-highwayvehicle (OHV) lovers. The area is designated “open” to vehicles including sand rails, ATVs, motorbikes and fourwheel-drive trucks. In addition, the area is also equipped with natural hot spring tubs, perfect for those seeking some rest and relaxation.

Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area Stretching 23,000 acres between Safford and Clifton and managed by the BLM, the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is the site of 23 miles of the Gila River and 14 miles of Bonita Creek – plus small portions of the San Francisco River and Eagle Creek. Two campgrounds, a number of picnic areas and a wildlife viewing area, as well as sites for rafting, hiking, bird watching and more, can be found here. Graham County Regional Park A popular spot for both active and passive recreation, Graham County Regional Park is not just the site of the Graham County Fair. It houses soccer fields, softball and baseball diamonds, basketball courts, picnic areas, walking and jogging paths, fishing holes and a number of facilities ideal for a variety of gatherings, plus RV hook-ups. Mt. Graham Golf Course With Mt. Graham overhead, golfers enjoy a day on the greens at Mt. Graham Golf Course in Safford. Open yearround, the traditional 18-hole course spans 6,354 yards at the longest tee for a par 72. Patrons can also access a driving range, short game practice areas, a pro shop, restaurant and lounge. ormed in 1985, the Gila Valley Arts Council’s mission is to facilitate the visual and performing arts in this Arizona region through a jam-packed season featuring the finest talent around – locally, nationally and internationally. The organization has brought a variety of talent to the Gila Valley, including performances from the Kremlin Orchestra, the International Children’s Choir, the Arizona Opera, jazz greats and dance companies – among many others! The Gila Valley Arts Council is also dedicated to exposing children to the great world of arts through its School Residency Program. The program offers daytime performances at the David M. Player Center for the Arts for school children, and also sponsors a number of visual arts workshops. In addition, the Residency Program allows prominent artists to visit local schools in promotion of the arts. Another notable resource for the arts in Graham County is the Art Guild of Eastern Arizona, a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting and promoting artistic development in the region. Agriculture has been a mainstay in the Graham County economy since even before its formation, as small farming communities sprung up along the Gila River in the 1870s. The river stretches through the county from east to west, acting as an excellent irrigation system for this farm center. Cotton is the principle crop produced in the communities of Graham County, along with alfalfa, small grains, apples, pumpkins and greenhouse tomatoes—as Graham County

is home to one of the state’s few hydroponic tomato nurseries (located in Bonita).
