The Chamber enjoys excellent working relationships with the village, Economic Development Commission, park district, township, and schools. We all work together for the betterment of the community. History – Baseball
B
aseball has enjoyed a long and storied history in Grayslake, starting in the 1890s with the “Grayslake Athletics.” In fact, by the 1930s they had changed their name to the “Grayslake Merchants” and, in 1931 they won the Lake County League championship.
Grayslake Athletics
As a result of the community’s long romance with the game, Grayslake has produced one major league player and one minor league player and a university-level baseball coach/athletic director. A particularly good, longtime high school and American Legion baseball coach named Paul Subject had much to do with two of those successes. According to Linda Willhite of the Grayslake Historical Society, Coach Subject only took the job because no one else wanted it and even had to read a book to figure out how to coach the game. But, she said, he turned out to be an incredibly gifted coach who saw several of his players go on to make a name for themselves in baseball. The fact that he volunteered to also coach the summer American Legion team didn’t hurt. He was able to use it as a training ground for his Grayslake High School Rams team. He taught them the finer points of the game during those summers and then fielded winning high school teams as a result. In 1971 Grayslake High School even named their baseball field named after him. As you can see, the hundreds of young baseball players who grab their bats and mitts to play in today’s Grayslake Youth Baseball Association (GYBA) have a lengthy legacy behind them. For instance, Jay Hook learned the game on the fields of Grayslake and perfected his pitch under the direction of Coach Subject at Grayslake High School. He eventually found his way to the major leagues, playing professionally from 1957 to 1964. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, pitching for them from 1957 (when he was 20 years old) until 1962 when he moved to a new expansion team in the National League, the New York Mets. There he played for famous manager Casey Stengel, according to Chris Brenner, a member of the Grayslake Historical Society. Jay Hook Signing
“The Mets were terrible in 1962. They broke the record for the most losses in a season with 120. It was about that team that Stengel made his famous quote that ‘We’ve got to learn to stay out of triple plays.’ But Hook was the one pitching during the first game that the Mets won – against the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Brenner said. “Hook played with such greats as Duke Snider and Don Zimmer when he was on the Mets.” Hook wore #47 for both teams and during his career had 29 wins and 64 losses. He retired at the age of 28 after he earned a master’s degree in thermodynamics from Northwestern University and went on to have a career as an engineer in Michigan. Another protégée of Coach Paul Subject who realized his baseball dreams for a time was Gale Peregrin. He was signed by the Cincinnati Reds when he was 19 years old, soon after pitching batting practice for the old Milwaukee Braves in 1956. Peregrin was put into the Reds’ farm system, playing in Florida and eventually for the Macon Peaches in Macon, Georgia alongside Pete Rose and Tommy Helms. But at the age of 23, Peregrin developed arm problems and retired from the sport. Baseball remained important to the Peregrin Family, however. In 1997 Gale’s son, Dave, helped to found the Grayslake Youth Baseball Association and his firm, Falcon Consulting Company, built Falcon Field on Grayslake School District property. Dave also served as the association’s first coach. Today the association remains popular and is still an independent entity, playing on park district and school district fields. Jack Horenberger played in town before Grayslake had a high school, so he never played for Coach Subject. But he nevertheless made a career of baseball and athletics. Horenberger, whose mother owned a deli in Grayslake, spent 37 years as the baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington and 34 years as the school’s athletic director. One of the fields on that campus is named for him, in fact. “Jack had a tryout with the Chicago White Sox in 1930 while he was still in high school and playing summer ball in Grayslake but he didn’t get signed. Later he had another tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals, but Branch Rickey, one of their coaches, didn’t think he could run fast enough so he advised Horenberger to use

History – Baseball his education instead of playing baseball,” explained Brenner. “So Horenberger took a position with Illinois Wesleyan instead and stayed there for many years.” Coach Subject also had nothing to do with two non-natives who also have played parts in Grayslake baseball lore but came here after they had already made their mark in the sport. A retired major leaguer managed a local business for a time and an “infamous” pitcher served as the superintendent of Grayslake’s schools for many years. Red Faber, a Baseball Hall of Famer who pitched for the Chicago White Sox from 1914 to his retirement in 1933 at the age of 45, managed a bowling alley in Grayslake from 1939 to 1946 and was probably quite the local celebrity at the time. Imagine the stories he would have been able to tell his regulars about the 1919 Black Sox scandal and other things that happened during his years with the team. The last of the “legal” spit-ball pitchers, Faber was an Iowa native who was not tarnished by the 1919 scandal because he was not among the players suspended by the League. He left the Grayslake bowling alley in 1946 to do a two-year stint as a coach with the White Sox and then in 1964 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, Brenner said. 1962 Macon Peaches

he Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum, 10 S. Seymour Ave., will be hosting a new traveling exhibit during the summer of 2015. Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars highlights the longtime rivalry between the fans of these two storied baseball teams. The exhibit runs through September 27, with plenty of exciting supporting programs throughout the summer. The exhibit covers all the bases of the cross-town rivalry between the White Sox and Cubs. The show examines concepts of loyalty and fandom through videos of each team’s colorful supporters and includes interviews with former players, sports journalists and broadcasters. The exhibit also features oral histories on video that explore what it means to be a fan and how fans feel about the teams and ball parks.
Gene Davis, superintendent of the Grayslake Schools starting in 1954, earned a place in baseball lore by pitching to – and striking out – St. Louis Browns’ owner Bill Veeck’s famous midget batter, Eddie Gaedel, while he was playing for the Sycamore Moose and the Sycamore Suns out near DeKalb. A veteran of World War II and recent graduate Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College team, Davis was teaching fifth grade in Plano at the time.
Exhibit panels include histories of the teams with timelines, interactive displays with trivia and a greatest player interactive screen allowing fans to field their top modern players. A “survey on the go” allows patrons to vote on their favorite players for each position, displaying running totals in real time. A cluster of video installations feature past and present players, announcers, journalists and historians. Panels also cover major historical storylines, including the Cubs vs. Sox 1906 World Series, the Cubs as baseball’s first dynasty, the Black Sox scandal, Harry Caray and more. For more information and a full listing of supporting programs and events, visit www.grayslakeheritagecenter.com, call (847) 543-1745 or email doberg@villageofgrayslake.com.
“Grayslake has been a baseball town for 125 years. We even have a record of the townspeople holding dances in 1909 to raise money to benefit the local team,” said Charlotte Renehan of the Grayslake Historical Society. Brenner agreed. “The community has always supported its many local baseball teams and leagues. Add to that the fact that we had a local coach who knew his business – Coach Paul Subject. He knew how to teach the game and develop his players so that they were able to move on to bigger and better things.”

Economic Development
E
conomic development is a key priority for the Village of Grayslake – and with good reason. In order to maintain a vibrant community with citizens who are well-served by a thriving local economy that provides a breadth of options for employment, commerce and an active lifestyle, community leaders must make a concerted effort to attract and welcome new businesses and to support the success of current businesses. That is why the Village, working in conjunction with local land owners, developers and business people, established the Grayslake Business Partnership LLC (GBP), a public-private partnership whose mission it is to help Grayslake grow and expand economically through attracting new retail and industry and retaining the businesses the community already has.
The GBP officially opened for business in July, 2014 and it is being led by Michael Stewart, Managing Director. “Our ultimate goal is to increase the retail and industrial foot print in Grayslake in order to increase the amount of non-residential tax revenue. In addition, this will provide Village residents with greater access to services and additional quality of life amenities without increasing the burden on residents,” Stewart explained. “We have some of the best largest sites available in central Lake County that are close to the highway, so we have decided that we have to be pro-active about attracting businesses here and letting the retail and industrial development community know that we are open for business,” he continued. For instance, they have the 600-acre Cornerstone development at Route 83 and Peterson Road and 100 acres at Routes 45 and 120 on the site of the former Lake County Fairgrounds. They also have some out-lots available at the new county fairgrounds and Grayslake Business Park, but those are not as large. “The original plan for the former fairgrounds was for a large outdoor retail center similar to Deer Park,” Stewart recalled. “But since the recession, many retailers have scaled back on ground up development so we are now in discussions with the property owner about new plans for the site – possibly a mixed-use complex including retail, restaurants, office and medical space.” For Cornerstone, the GBP is hoping to attract companies that will provide area residents with high-paying, long-lasting jobs.

Economic Development So, unlike Kenosha which is building large warehouse and logistics facilities that may employ small numbers of lower wage people, they are focusing on recruiting advanced manufacturers, medical device manufacturers, business services like insurance and finance, pharmaceutical companies and bio-pharmaceutical companies. “We want to recruit businesses that bring people to live in our community by night and patronize our stores and businesses by day,” he said. “Lake County is already the site of a pharmaceutical and medical cluster, thanks to companies like Abbott and Baxter. So we are hoping to attract more like-minded companies to Grayslake. Companies selling and manufacturing similar items like to locate near one another for supply chain, logistics and workforce reasons. They like to be able to recruit engineers and scientists from a place that already has them and is producing more of them,” he said. “They like to leverage the assets that already exist in an area,” Stewart added. “When it comes to the availability of existing buildings, the good thing about Grayslake is that we don’t have a lot of big empty boxes sitting around, waiting for tenants,” he explained. “But the challenge is that we get calls from site selectors on a weekly basis, looking for a quick move-in space and we are missing those opportunities. But developers are leery of speculation building ever since the recession.”

“The Village may be limited in existing inventory, but the upside is that for a modern manufacturer looking at a new facility, many older buildings won’t fit their requirements anyhow, so new construction as a build-to-suite can be the right choice,” he continued. “That’s why the opportunities at Cornerstone, Grayslake Business Park and the like are so well-positioned for our industrial targets.” The GBP is taking several approaches to growing Grayslake, according to Stewart. They have developed a website (www. grayslakeforbusiness.com) that touts the community’s attributes and plan to launch a second site (www.shovelreadyillinois.com) in early summer, 2015. They have also engaged a retail consultant to study the trade area in and around Grayslake to advise them on which retailers to approach and this spring they attended the International Council of Shopping Centers RECON retailer show and met with 35 retailers who had targeted Grayslake for expansion or whom Grayslake had targeted. When it comes to industrial expansion, they are constantly meeting with brokers; attending conferences; and sending out communications, highlighting Grayslake’s many available properties and attributes. Working with the state to bring direct foreign investment to Grayslake by attracting foreign companies to locate there is next on the agenda, Stewart said. Last fall they also reached out to existing Grayslake businesses with a survey about the current business climate and services they would like to see offered and received an excellent response. In April, the results of the survey were shared with members of the business community at a breakfast meeting held at the University Center of Lake County, located in Grayslake. “We want to take care of our existing businesses and make sure that they don’t feel taken for granted,” he explained. “The Village of Grayslake, the county and the state have done an excellent job of looking at the area’s infrastructure and extrapolating out five or more years to figure out what resources will be needed to accommodate growth and most of that work should be done by the end of 2015,” Stewart said. “So we are ready to welcome businesses that understand that Grayslake is a great place to work, live and play.”

Grayslake Park District
I
f you haven’t paid close attention to the Grayslake Park District (GPD) in the past few years, you need to take another look. It is constantly growing and changing, adding new facilities and programs and improving those they already have.
“We have had more seniors wanting to go on our day trips than ever before and now we will be able to accommodate them by allowing them to go to plays, restaurants, casinos and even cruises on Lake Geneva,” Nehila explained. The GPD has also been gradually updating the infrastructure of their various buildings in order to reduce energy use and save money so that it can be used, instead, on programs.
Jones Island
“Energy audits have revealed where we need to replace HVAC units, lighting and even water heaters and while this investment isn’t exciting or even noticeable, it will allow us to spend less money on our utility bills which will free up funds for programs and services,” he said.
Jones Island, for instance, underwent a $420,000 renovation during the off-season, complete with a beach renovation, two new picnic shelters, a new section of sea wall, extensive landscaping and a canoe and kayak launch, according to Jeff Nehila, executive director. “We couldn’t have accomplished this without the $400,000 grant that we received from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources,” he stated. This renovation will allow Grayslake Park District residents to better enjoy Grays Lake, the lake from which the community takes its name. They also recently completed playground renovations at Antler Park in Hainesville and Hunter’s Cove Park in Grayslake. It has been 20 years since the last renovation of these playgrounds, so they were definitely warranted. The District also doubled its capacity for bus trips for youth and seniors by purchasing a second bus.
the gymnastics factory
Hunter’s Cove Park In the coming year, the GPD plans to renovate portions of its seven miles of trails through various parks. In addition, they plan to acquire and improve the final 30 acres of Allegheny Park on the south end of Grayslake. It will eventually be a massive 90-acre park filled with sports fields to meet the high demand for such amenities. “We bought the first 40 acres of the former Beelow farm in the mid 2000s. Then, in 2013 we acquired another 20 acres through a donation from Dan Beelow and he will donate the final 30 acres in Movie in the Park

the coming year. We expect to have the entire park improved and open to the public in 2017,” Nehila detailed. “We use the value of his donations on grant applications so that we can have the money to make improvements. It has been a great arrangement.” They also plan to apply for a grant to improve Meadowview Park in Grayslake with a new playground, upgraded athletic fields, more trails and an outdoor education course. In addition to these capital improvements, GPD staff is working industriously to expand programming, particularly for youth and for senior citizens. “We are expanding our outdoor education programming at Jones Island, offering stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and lake swimming. Elsewhere, we have added an instructional course in disc golf for those aged seven and up. It is a sport that is particularly popular with people in the 15-to-40 age group. We also have a nine-hole, par-3 traditional golf course that is both fun and challenging,” he said. “I like to say that when you play our course, you get nine shots at a hole-in-one every time you play,” Nehila stated. “We have 33 great parks with many amenities. Summer time is a great time to get out and take advantage of the offerings that personally interest you,” he added. For more information, visit www.glpd.com or call (847) 223-7529.

Education
D
uring the school year, Grayslake’s young people are well served by Community Consolidated School District 46 with its seven schools serving nearly 4,000 early childhood, elementary and middle school students, and then by Grayslake Community High School District 127 which educates students from eight villages at both Grayslake North and Grayslake Central High Schools. District 127 offers about 3,000 students a comprehensive high school education, which prepares them for college and for 21st century careers. The district offers performing and visual arts courses and a variety of athletic programs because both are essential to students’ overall development and education, according to Superintendent Catherine Finger. Consequently, extracurricular offerings continue to grow each year, which contributes to the district’s 96 percent graduation rate. To further engage students in the learning process, the district implemented a “Bring Your Own Technology” program. In addition, biology classes at both schools utilized iPads in the classrooms each day. Tablet technology was also used in the ELL program at Grayslake North and in the Spanish I classes at Grayslake Central. The district also purchased multiple Chromebook carts for each school so that students had the opportunity to check out computers for use during class sessions. The student response to this program was so overwhelming that District 127 plans to increase access to mobile technology by adding additional carts of laptops to both schools this coming fall.

The Washington Post in its annual ranking of Illinois High Schools recognized both of Grayslake Central and Grayslake North as top high schools in the nation. Grayslake Central was ranked 15th in the state and Grayslake North was ranked 30th. Students themselves earned many accolades for their achievements during the 2014-15 school year. Many secured Advanced Placement National Scholar status as a result of participation in their nationally recognized AP program. Students from both schools also competed at the state level in the History Fair and one represented District 127 in the national competition. Because of these accomplishments several seniors were awarded full scholarships to four-year universities such as the University of Illinois and the University of Notre Dame, while many others were awarded partial scholarships to apply to the universities of their choosing. District 127 staff and students are seen as active contributors throughout the surrounding community. Each school hosts a Public Service Practicum class and students learn leadership and management skills through the planning and implementation of service projects in Lake County. Each athletic team is involved in at least one service project during the course of their season and many teams continue to volunteer after their season ends. Among the recipients of this student assistance was the Grayslake Oasis Teen Center, the local PADS shelter and the Grayslake Exchange Club. District 127 students are out in the community, making it a better place and learning useful life lessons while they contribute.

Health Care & Public Safety
W
hen it comes to health care facilities and public safety services, Grayslake is extremely fortunate to have a wellequipped outpatient center within the community and to have an involved and concerned fire department that offers more than fire suppression and paramedic/ambulance services. The Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center has seen constant growth at its 300,000-plus square foot “hospital without beds” on over 50 acres at 1475 E. Belvidere Rd. since 2004, according to Marsha Oberrieder, vice president of operations for Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital and on-site administrator for Northwestern Grayslake.
“Our mission revolves around helping our residents and neighbors any way that we can. We certainly provide much more than fire suppression, emergency medical services and specialized responses to our citizens and visitors.” – Grayslake Fire Protection District Fire Chief John Christian The facility features a free-standing emergency center that accepts ambulances, plus physician offices, outpatient cardiology testing, a fully functional outpatient laboratory, rehabilitation services including audiology testing and physical, occupational and speech therapies, an ambulatory surgery center, a comprehensive cancer center offering radiation therapy, chemotherapy and infusion treatments and a full radiology center offering MRIs, CT scans, diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, digital mammography, nuclear medicine, bone density testing and even stereotactic breast biopsy procedures. “We are currently seeing 28,000 patients annually at our Grayslake Emergency Center,” said Oberrieder, “which is amazing after only 10 years in the community. And if someone needs to be admitted to a hospital, we can transfer them to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.”

“We are constantly working to meet the health care needs of central Lake County through our Grayslake facility’s many service offerings and physician offices,” Oberrieder explained. In addition, she added, the physicians and staff members continue to reach out to community residents through their annual Children’s Safety Fair, held each May, and through outreach programs like prenatal education classes, skin cancer screenings and programs like “Look Good, Feel Good” and “I Can Cope” for cancer patients, as well as other health-related programs. The Grayslake Fire Protection District also provides a range of health and well-being services and classes for Village residents. For instance, for more than 30 years the fire department’s firefighter/paramedics have taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid classes several times a year at Fire Station #1, according to Fire Chief John Christian. Members of the public may register for the lifesaving classes through the Grayslake Park District, which partners with the District on the program. Each class runs for three hours. The Fire District will also run similar classes for large groups upon request. The District also sells, for a nominal fee, “CPR Anytime” kits, developed by the American Heart Association. These are basically do-it-yourself kits with an instruction book and supplies so that residents can learn the basics of CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use on their own. Users cannot become certified from the kit, but they can gain a working knowledge of the lifesaving techniques. “Remembering When” is another program offered by the Fire District. Geared toward senior citizens, it teaches residents how to prevent falls and keep their homes safe from fire. This program was developed by the National Fire Protection Association for High-Risk Outreach and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. The focus is centered around 16 key safety messages – eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention – developed by experts and practitioners from national and local

Health Care & Public Safety safety organizations as well as through focus group testing in the high-fire-risk states, according to Christian. “The course covers everything from kitchen safety and how furniture should be situated, to having working smoke detectors and setting your hot water heater to a safe temperature,” Christian explained. “We try to make sure that our senior residents are educated in prevention and their homes are safe to live in.”
any way that we can. We certainly provide much more than fire suppression, emergency medical services and specialized responses to our citizens and visitors,” Christian said.
Firefighters will also go out to residents’ homes, by appointment, for safety walk-through sessions so that they may make suggestions to homeowners to prevent fires. These evaluations can be requested by calling the Fire District’s Fire Prevention Bureau at (847) 2238960. In addition, the Grayslake Fire Department hosts AARP driving classes for seniors four times a year at Station #1. These are taught by select AARP teachers, but Christian said that he also looks forward to interacting with enrollees to educate them about services the District offers and to hear their ideas for new initiatives that may make the community safer. Finally, firefighters and members of the District’s command staff are available as speakers to community groups that make requests and the department has a dedicated honor guard that they send out to parades, ceremonies and other local events. “Our mission revolves around helping our residents and neighbors

stablished in 1899, the Grayslake Fire Protection District provides Emergency Services to the Village of Grayslake and surrounding areas encompassing 24.5 square miles. The district is governed by a Board of Trustees and levies taxes separately from the Village. The department operates out of three fire stations and employs 66 personnel. Of these, 39 are full time and 27 are part time. Staff consists of 55 licensed paramedics and 11 licensed emergency medical technicians. Full-time positions include a Chief, Deputy Chief, Division Chief of Training, three Battalion Chiefs, nine Lieutenants, two Fire Inspectors, 21 Firefighter/Paramedics, and an Administrative Assistant.
MISSION “To make people safe.”
T
he Grayslake Police Department is one of 85 Illinois police agencies to be accredited through the International Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the fourth such agency in Lake County. Grayslake police personnel number 31 sworn officers, six part-time sworn officers, two community service officers and one records/administration civilian. Department divisions include patrol, investigations, and records/ administration. Other components and assignments include two high school resource officers, two DARE officers, field training officers, traffic officers, bicycle patrol officers and evidence technicians. The department invests in the latest technologies and shares resources with numerous agencies and task forces for the prevention and suppression of area drug and gang activities, swat/riot response, major crime investigation and emergency communications. The Grayslake Police Department, part of the village-wide Requestfor-Service System, is committed to the concepts of community policing and problem solving and continually solicits input from the community to better target police services. Officers enjoy speaking to groups and appearing at block parties. The Grayslake Police Department continues to be one reason for low crime rate and safe neighborhoods in the village.
The three fire stations are located to provide efficient response times. A fire station is located within 1½ miles of 90 percent of district residents. In 2013, the fire department responded to 3,700 emergency calls for service.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding police services or if you would more like additional information about crime prevention, programs, talks or tours, call the Grayslake Police Department at (847) 223-2341 or visit www.villageofgrayslake.com.
The Grayslake Fire Department provides many services to the public. The most obvious are fire suppression and emergency medical services. Other duties include water rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, below ground rescue, high angle rescue, structural collapse response, confined space rescue and search and rescue. The Fire Prevention Bureau administers fire prevention and public education. Responsibilities include fire safety inspections, building plan review, fire safety education, fire station tours and fire investigation and reporting. CPR classes are held in cooperation with the Grayslake Park District. Grayslake also participates in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to provide or receive cooperative assistance to incidents throughout the surrounding counties. In the event of a disaster, this system could provide countless resources to the community. GRAYSLAKE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
