Community Introduction isconsin does not get better than this! Our unspoiled beauty offers a spectacular setting for four seasons of getaway fun. The Green Lake Country Visitors Bureau represents the five communities of Berlin, Green Lake, Princeton, Markesan and Ripon who take great pride in the scenic countryside that sets them apart from other destinations.
W
This beautiful area appeals to the vacationer and full-time resident and offers unique shopping, a wide variety of dining and lodging options, restorative spas, excellent health care facilities, family oriented community festivals and events, diverse hunting and fishing opportunities, superior biking and cross country ski trails, and industry-leading businesses.
Together we are one beautiful country for a vacation or a place to call home. For more information on Green Lake Country and a complete list of upcoming and ongoing events, please visit our website at www.glcountry.com.
We pride ourselves on being a little off the beaten path, allowing us to retain the rich history and charm that prevailed when the first explorers passed this way. If you are looking for a relaxing or adventurous vacation destination, or a place to call home, come explore in our direction. Each of our communities contributes its own special qualities and characteristics. Berlin, our anchor to the north, straddles the Fox River as it winds through the city, passing by a delightful mix of shops, parks and a legendary golf course. Just minutes to the southwest we introduce Princeton, known for its charming antiques, shops and Wisconsin’s largest outdoor flea market. Travel south to the Markesan area and visit the Amish community, or experience the deeply held bonds of rural family farm life. Head back north a few minutes to Green Lake to take part in the arts, relax while fishing on Big Green Lake or challenge yourself on one of the area’s first class golf courses. Cruise a couple miles east to Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party, to enjoy the historic downtown while shopping or dining.

Get to Know Our Communities BERLIN Dating back to 1846 when Nathan Strong and his surveying crew were sent out to determine the best central location for crossing the Fox River between Fond du Lac and Stevens Point, Strongsville, a place now known as Berlin, was founded. By 1848 a ferry was operating, and in 1857, the railroad connection from Milwaukee via Ripon opened, beginning Berlin’s growth. Expansion continued, helped by farming, trading, quarrying and manufacturing, and Strong named the growing community Berlin. Learn about Berlin’s expansion with a visit to the Berlin Area Historical Society Museums of Local History. Explore the story behind leather manufacturing, blacksmithing, ice cutting, printing and cranberry farming, or view Clark School, a one-room country schoolhouse. Berlin’s down-to-earth residents welcome all. Here you will find a city rich in values and heritage, and people who are proud to be part of their community. As Berlin continues to grow, they remain true to their heart – a small town full of friendly flavor. Excitement shows in the strong community involvement residents have in the numerous year-round activities planned for all to enjoy. Popular events include the Concerts in the Park, Fox River Days, the Bugle Mouth Bass Tournament, the Midwinter Art Faire, the Wine and Beer Extravaganza, and the Musical Holiday Open House complete

with evening parade set aglow with lights. Be sure not to miss the Street Cruisers’ Annual Car Show held in August, the Pumpkins on Petunias fall festival, or the Historical Society’s October Ghost Walk in Oakwood Cemetery. While visiting Berlin, view the Victorian homes surrounding Nathan Strong Park or explore one of seven other exceptional parks, three of which are located on the Fox River. Spend a day at the Aquatic Center, golf the leading 27-hole Mascoutin Golf Course, or hike, bike or cross country ski the Mascoutin Valley State Trail, connecting Berlin and Ripon. Camp along the banks of the Fox River, snowmobile on groomed trails, shop, dine or just enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Berlin is proud of its history, passionate about its future and committed to family and community values. Check out Berlin, “on the Fox.”

MARKESAN Since 1858, the Town of Markesan, once known as Granville, has provided a solid foundation for the livelihood and wellbeing of its citizens. With strong multi-generational ties to the land, a continued dedication to the support and growth of the community, and an enthusiastic love of the great outdoors, the citizens of Markesan believe their town is worthy of being called a “grand city.” Not only is there is an impressive history surrounding this area, including claims to having been the third richest city in the nation, but there is also fertile agricultural land that remains a driving force behind the abundant family farms as well as the canning industry. An exceptional state-ofthe-art school offering a healthy environment for learning demonstrates the commitment to the youth. The presence of businesses, medical facilities, financial institutions and other core public services combine to create a priceless quality of life. Learn more about Markesan’s intriguing past of missing gold, murder and love of the land by visiting the Grand River Valley Museum and Train Depot located just a short jog from the Grand River which winds through town. A leisurely stroll along the city streets will reveal wonderfully nostalgic Victorian homes. A short drive will lead to an indulgent and memorable tea party experience at the Victorian Tea House. Or venture into the country to find horse-drawn buggies sharing the road with automobiles thanks to the large Amish population in the area. Explore their
unique lifestyle by visiting a bakery, furniture shop, harness shop, custom cabinet maker, sawmill, greenhouse, grocery store, candy store and more.
An active approach to experiencing Markesan might involve fishing in Little Green Lake or Lake Puckaway for walleye, bass, perch, bluegill or muskie. Hunters and snowmobilers will find plentiful game and excellent trails. Or try attending a family-oriented event, such as a fire department breakfast or brat fry, the Antique Car and Vintage Snowmobile Show, June Dairy Days, Heritage Days at the Grand River Valley Museum, or the Christmas Homespun Holidays Celebration. Come see why Markesan’s motto of “a grand community” is a fitting description of this wonderful place on the Grand River. Markesan Chamber of Commerce P.O. RIPON The friendly and inviting City of Ripon is an active community set among historic buildings and well-preserved architecture from the late 19th century. Ripon holds a special place in our nation’s past; it is the birthplace of the Republican Party, but it also enjoys the present and welcomes the future. The Little White Schoolhouse, built in 1853 and now a National Historic Landmark, stands as a witness to the creation of a national movement that began when three existing political parties joined together on March 20, 1854 to create the Republican Party. The small, yet humble, structure is open for visitors to view artifacts, learn more about Ripon, or to glimpse what school life was like for children in the 1850s.
City streets are dotted with several eyecatching Victorian houses known as Painted Ladies. These colorful homes bring to mind an era of grace and gentility. The bustling downtown features a variety of businesses in buildings with architecture dating back to the 1860s, which allows the character and charm of these structures to enhance the shopping or dining experience. Several events throughout the year draw locals and visitors alike. The Village Green Concert Series is a summertime favorite; the live musical performances on Friday nights are a wonderful way to connect with neighbors and friends while listening to jazz, rock, polka, country or acoustic music. Hay Days opens the summer with a glimpse into Ripon’s pioneer era. Cookie Daze is a family festival that ends the summer with crafts, clowns, kid-made rockets and, of course, cookies. Septemberfest celebrates the fall season with live music, food, a custom car show, dog walk and show, and other
family activities. Dickens of a Christmas weekend kicks off the holidays. Drink hot cider or chocolate and snack on roasted chestnuts while viewing scenes of days gone by in business storefront windows. Watch as quilts are sewn, school is taught, a barber shaves a patron, or a family listens to a bedtime story.
Ripon College, a private liberal arts school, consists of a 250-acre campus that flows into the community and boasts several buildings with noteworthy 19th century architecture. The college provides numerous cultural and sporting events to enjoy. Other features and attractions not to miss include several parks and trails for walking, running, biking or cross country skiing; Larson’s Famous Clydesdales, where tours and shows highlight the large and powerful horses they raise; and Rippin’ Good Cookies, whose outlet store is open for sampling their tasty selections before deciding what to take home.
Come. Find out why Ripon is the ideal place to live, work and play. Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce 127 Jefferson Street Ripon, WI 54971 920-748-6764 Fax 920-748-6784 www.ripon-wi.com chamber@ripon-wi.com

For the more ambitious, there are plenty of biking and hiking trails. Enjoy wildlife and wildflowers as you travel paths of various difficulties. Printed maps are available to plan your trip. Nature lovers will revel in the tranquil sights of the Mascoutin Valley Trail, which is owned and maintained by Green Lake, Winnebago and Fond du Lac counties, with one portion traveling from Berlin to Ripon on the former Milwaukee Road Railroad line. The newest path runs along Highway 23 in Green Lake. Or try Huckleberry’s Trail or the Tuttle Creek Trek in Princeton, to name just a few. Golfers will want to take to the links on one of our many premier golf courses. Lawsonia, a 36-hole course, challenges with its Scottish-style “Links” and thickforested “Woodlands” options. Mascoutin

Golf Club’s original 18 holes saw the addition of the “Blue” nine in 1999, designed by Rick Jacobson, featuring river views and a “cliff ” hole. Tuscumbia, the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, is one of the best-manicured courses in the state with stately evergreens in a park-like setting and a new log clubhouse. Finally, White Lake Golf Resort features an unusual western style with natural landscaping sprawling over 200 acres. Peacocks roam the course and the adjoining vacation resort and supper club. Autumn brings crisp air, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, and hunters to the area. Wildlife abounds, and whitetail deer, turkey, bear, pheasants and waterfowl create a sportsman’s paradise. Public land makes hunting accessible to all. For the truly adventurous, see the fall colors from the air in a hot air balloon. This not-to-be-forgotten experience is available year-round, but is especially spectacular when Mother Nature sets the hills ablaze in the reds, oranges and golds of autumn.
As fall festivals give way to holiday parades and celebrations, strap on your snow shoes or cross country skis and take advantage of some of the many groomed trails that traverse through silent woods and sunny meadows. Many communities offer ice skating rinks, or test your skills and ankles on the frozen lakes. Of course, you’ll have to share them with the fishermen as they set up camp in the shanty villages on the “hard water” to reel in their catches. Perch, bluegill, walleye, northern, lake trout and cisco are some of the delicacies that may be on your plate after a day on the frozen lakes. And if the big one got away, stop off at your favorite local dining establishment for the Friday fish fry after snowmobiling over 150 miles of trails maintained by local snowmobile clubs. Trails wind through woods, meadows, marsh and fields. Don’t forget the kids! They’ll be begging to go when you mention plans to visit the sledding hill at Zobel Park at Highways 49 and 23. And when winter turns to spring, they can play Frisbee golf there and at many of the other beautiful parks. The aquatic center, with its 170-foot long water slide and zero-depth entry, is sure to be a hit as well. Local campgrounds also cater to families with pools and activities for the youngsters. There is never a lack of things to do in Green Lake Country. Explore in our direction. We’ll keep you busy!

Education he communities of Berlin, Green Lake, Markesan, Princeton and Ripon, along with the surrounding area, offer an exceptional variety of educational opportunities for students from 4-yearold kindergarten to college. Local schools provide students with topnotch educators, facilities and programs to prepare them for life in a global economy.
T
Public schools in the Berlin Area School District include Clay Lamberton Elementary School (K-5), Berlin Middle School (6-8) and Berlin High School (912). Their vision is to create quality students with a global perspective, educated to their fullest potential, and respectful to all. With a motto of “Children: Our first priority,” they emphasize the formation of strong relations with parents and the community to aid in preparing children to compete in the 21st century marketplace. The 2011-2014 Strategic Plan will guide the district in providing a comprehensive educational program that stresses lifelong learning and successful occupational, civic and personal growth. Two private schools offer alternatives. St. John Lutheran School educates children through 8th grade with a small teacher to student ratio and All Saints Catholic School focuses on a Christ-centered education, academics, morals and values.

For decades, most people associated America’s small towns with one-room schoolhouses, and, true to that image, Green Lake is a ‘one-roof’ schoolhouse. Students from 4-year-old kindergarten through 12th grade attend school in the same building, encouraging a familyfriendly, community atmosphere. With the challenges of a new world economy, Green Lake has chosen to become the first 4K–12 International Baccalaureate World School in Wisconsin. IB encourages a deeper understanding of subjects and active participation in the learning process. The district also recently adopted the Earth Partnership in Schools, integrating outdoor activities into all classes. Connecting students with the lake and its place in the world, The Green Lake Global and Environmental Academy—a lake-centered charter school—opened in 2008 to 7-8 grade students. Markesan is a rural district whose citizens have been strong supporters of public education, passing a referendum in 1998 to build a new high school addition and to remodel the former high school as a middle school. Markesan District Schools are “opening doors for kids.” Markesan Elementary School and the combined Markesan Middle/High School offer stateof-the-art technology facilities and resources to assist students in becoming

lifelong learners and contributing citizens. College-level classes are available at the high school, providing students with a head-start on their futures. Fine arts, athletics and co-curricular activities flourish in Markesan, helping to round out a well-balanced education.
The Princeton Public School District educates children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The district makes community and family involvement a major priority, and the community views the school as a gathering place. Small class sizes, classroom collaboration between grade levels and strong curriculum helped earn Princeton a two-time School of Promise Award. Students can participate in multiple extracurricular activities, and hands-on learning at school forests, gifted and talented programs, and nontraditional and specialized learning opportunities give children the chance to excel. School-to-work programs, exploratory class offerings, a distancelearning lab and personalized career guidance ensure that students will be prepared for the future. St. John the Baptist Catholic School provides a quality Catholic education for children in 4-K through 8th grade. Aside from the basic curriculum, students attend religion, physical education, music and art classes. The Ripon Area School District serves approximately 1,800 students. The school district provides a half-day, 4-year-old preschool program at community sites and K-12 classes at four newly built or remodeled schools. Ripon’s vision statement affirms that, “as one of Wisconsin’s outstanding school districts, we are a vibrant, engaged community of lifelong learners that challenges and inspires students to reach their full potential, achieve success and contribute to the local and world community throughout their lives.” In addition to the public schools, the school district has three charter schools to provide more choices for parents and students. Ripon Exploration and Application Charter High (REACH) School is a 9-12 grade school for hands-on learners. Crossroads Academy provides self-paced learning programs for at-risk, 6-12 grade students, and Quest Elementary School is a project-based learning charter school for students in grades 3-5. Those looking for higher education need not look far. Ripon College boasts a strong national academic reputation and is ranked in the top 15 percent of colleges in the nation by the Princeton Review. Moraine Park Technical College is nearby in Fond du Lac with a regional center in Ripon. They offer more than 100 different career options, and classes are taught by industry-experienced instructors. Also in Fond du Lac, the UWFond du Lac offers courses that are the basis for more than 250 majors. Six buildings surround a two-acre lake, and a $13 million renovation was completed in 2000, transforming the campus into a state-of-the-art facility. In addition, the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Service (UWEX) maintains an office in Green Lake County and is staffed by educators offering programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community Development, Family Living and 4-H Youth Development. The communities of Green Lake Country are well-prepared to provide learning opportunities to all ages. Friendly, welcoming staff at local schools will be happy to arrange tours of facilities and interviews with personnel. Whatever your aspirations, you will be assured of readiness for the challenges of the everchanging global economic climate if you take advantage of the many educational opportunities awaiting you.
