owners, intergovernmental partners and civic organizations that have made this community great. Gurnee was originally a farming community of less than 500 residents when it first became a Village in 1928. From these humble beginnings, it expanded rapidly with beautiful subdivisions and world-class attractions such as Six Flags Great America,

Gurnee Mills Shopping Mall and Key Lime Cove. Gurnee, with the combined efforts of two generations worth of work, is now an outstanding place to live, work and play and one of the premier Chicagoland communities. No other community has the variety of recreational opportunities, public amenities and exceptional services that our Village does – all delivered in the most cost-effective manner possible, which allows the Village to not levy a property tax. Preservation efforts are at the heart of many of our operations. Whether keeping our neighborhoods safe or ensuring that our roads are adequately maintained, the Village continues to excel. The Village is very cognizant of managing costs and tax dollars judiciously and introduced several new programs that will save our residents money or streamline operations the last few years. Our Police, Fire and Public Works Departments are at the forefront in their individual fields and have been repeatedly recognized for their excellence and quality of service. We continuously strive to advance our services in response to the needs of residents, visitors and businesses. This year, we welcomed AKHAN Semiconductor, the world’s first diamond semiconductor firm, to the Village, which promises to bring a new wave of tech jobs to the community. Just as we worked to attract AKHAN to the community, we remain dedicated to advancing economic development, as it ensures the future viability of our business

8

The American Chamber of Commerce Executives with support from Small Business Network, Inc., designed a study to determine the real value to companies in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local chamber of commerce. Do consumers

IL-GUR-CW-15_print.indd 8

really support businesses because they are chamber members? A sampling of the results proves their case: Most consumers (59 percent) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29 percent more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26 percent more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader. When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43 percent more likely to consider buying insurance from it. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably of it and 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Economic Development “GURNEE’S GOT IT!”

G

urnee’s new Economic Development Director Ellen Dean believes this is more than just a catchy phrase. Hired in January to serve as a liaison to the business community – existing and prospective – Dean has been impressed with just how much Gurnee has to offer residents, businesses, and visitors, and she intends to infuse all of the Village’s marketing efforts with this message. “In Gurnee, there’s something for every audience – for businesses, “it” is convenient location and a strong customer base; for residents, “it” is great schools and quality of life; and for visitors, “it” is shopping and attractions that are unrivaled anywhere else in the area,” explains Dean. The new Gurnee economic development effort will utilize a dedicated Gurnee’s Got It website and Facebook page to provide community information, including listings of all Gurnee businesses (by type), visitor amenities, and available properties. Dean hopes that residents and businesses will come to rely on these resources as their one-stop shop for information about shopping locally or doing business in Gurnee.

1,100 businesses. Just about everything you can imagine is here. We want our businesses to stay and grow in Gurnee, and community support is vital.” Adds Kloczkowski. “It has always been the goal of the chamber to keep all business revenue possible in Gurnee, it requires a top down effort from the village, park districts, schools and businesses to lead in that charge.” In the past year, Gurnee has licensed nearly 172 new businesses, from clothing boutiques to independent restaurants to fitness facilities. New businesses are featured in the Village’s newsletter, Keeping Posted, and a business directory can be found on Gurnee’sGotIt.com. Sales tax revenue in Gurnee accounts for 47 percent of the Village’s 2015/16 General Fund revenue budget, making it the largest single source for funding Village operations. A one-half percent home rule sales tax imposed in January 2015 will be dedicated solely to infrastructure including roadway, storm water management, and water/sanitary systems, putting the Village on course in the coming year for the largest capital improvement program in its 90-year history. Nearly half of the $10.1 million in planned capital spending during this period is expected to be funded by sales tax.

“The Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce was developed to foster close business relationships, to provide valuable benefits and services to its members and to enhance the economic viability and growth of the local business community. The addition of Ms. Dean is a strong step forward by the village to further those goals and the chamber is committed to working together to attain them” says Dan Kloczkowski, owner of KHM Plastics and Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors. Dean, who has previously developed economic development programs for the Villages of Glenview and Downers Grove, brings nearly 20 years of experience in local government management. “Economic development is key to preserving the balance that most communities want – a high level of municipal services and amenities, strong property values, plentiful jobs, convenient goods and services, and a moderate property tax burden.” Dean describes it as a self-reinforcing cycle: “A healthy, diverse business climate – industrial, office, retail, and service – spreads the cost of services among a larger tax base. Quality jobs attract new residents to move into town (thereby supporting property values) and they provide the discretionary income necessary to support a mix of businesses which offer day-to-day convenience for Gurnee residents as well as tax revenue and additional jobs. It all works together.” Keeping it all in balance is something that Gurnee has done very well over the years, with development of 4.3 million square feet in 14 office/industrial parks, and 5.3 million square feet of retail in 22 shopping centers. Dean stresses the importance of looking in our own backyard when it comes to purchasing goods and services. “Gurnee is home to

IL-GUR-CW-15_print.indd 11

Complementing its balanced mix of industrial, office, retail, service, and residential development, Gurnee is poised to add another dimension: high tech manufacturing. With the addition of AKHAN Semiconductors to the Gurnee business community in early 2015), Gurnee will position itself as the heart of the “Diamond Prairie,” – a term coined by Mayor Kristina Kovarik as a counterpart to the Silicon Valley. The Village expects that the 80 high tech jobs that AKHAN is expected to deliver in its first year will be just the beginning. Dean speculates, “We look forward to further growth as AKHAN’s pioneering technology takes hold and spawns incubator companies and additional investment. Gurnee is well-positioned, given its location and access to educational resources, to truly be the heart of the Diamond Prairie.” What would Gurnee be without the civic organizations, clubs, and community events that give it that hometown feel? Dean terms these organizations the “civic infrastructure” of the community and credits them with giving the community much of its unique character. On Oct. 3, one of those organizations – the American Legion – will ➤

be the beneficiary, along with the Honor Flight program, of funds raised by a new event, the Gurnee Craft Beer Festival, to be hosted at Gurnee Mills in cooperation with Timothy O’Toole’s and the Village of Gurnee. “Special events like these – and the coming together of the community for a cause – are the intangibles that help to make a town a ‘hometown’.”

Tickets will be on sale by June; attendees will enjoy specialty craft beers from a selection of over 30 regional and national breweries, some of which are not yet available in the Chicago market. Proceeds from the event will help fund improvements to the Gurnee American Legion Hall. ✺

F

or many in Gurnee’s business community, the seeds for success are homegrown. Born and raised in the familyfriendly Gurnee community, these hometown entrepreneurs, financial advisors, educators, consultants, researchers, medical experts, and business professionals are forging a new generation of hometown success stories. ADAM KHAN, AKHAN SEMICONDUCTOR When Adam Khan originally graduated from Warren Township High School and left Gurnee, nobody could have predicted what he could bring back with him. Now a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and founder of AKHAN Semiconductor, the world leader in diamond semiconductor technology, Khan has returned home to establish AKHAN’s manufacturing and corporate headquarters back in his hometown. This new venture, made possible through his collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, promises to put Gurnee on the high-tech map and transform it into “the diamond prairie,” the Midwest’s answer to the Silicon Valley. Khan invented the diamond semiconductor while studying the materials used for superconductors such as those used in highspeed, magnetic lift trains in China. “I … read a paper about diamond as a potential material [which could be utilized for energy transfer in superconductors]. As it turns out, we saw an opportunity at that point that diamond would actually be a much better semiconductor material, and it was because of that initial foray into physics that I sunk my teeth into it,” Khan said. Diamond semiconductors work by transferring energy in electronics. For a number of years, silicon has been the main material used in semiconductors, but as the processing demands of cell phones, laptops and other computers have increased, silicon is an increasingly less viable method for semiconductors. Khan revolutionized the science of this technology by introducing diamonds, which can more efficiently transfer energy, and developing a platform which could supplement current silicon technology with diamonds.

“Why that’s important is because as we shift away from what’s being done, this new technology is not startling to that captive industry. Rather, it’s continuing all of the great innovations that are being made today, continuing that road map and just making things more heat efficient,” Khan said. After working with Argonne, Khan began seeking a home base to begin commercial production. AKHAN Semiconductor decided on Gurnee after reviewing incentives from a number of communities and states, partially because of its natural strengths as well as Khan’s relationship with it. “Gurnee has multiple things going for it. First, you have captive companies such as Motorola, AbbVie and Baxter just in your backyard. Also, you also have two national laboratories [Argonne and Fermilab] nearby, which is very unique. The State of Illinois is also making a bigger push toward clean technology, which creates a dynamic, enabling environment. The combination of all these things makes Gurnee a unique and attractive area,” Khan said. However, he also acknowledged the great strengths and amenities of the community. When asked about what he drew him back to Gurnee, Khan said, “This is a wonderful area to grow up in. The quality of life, the cost of living – I can tell you it’s a great place to live and this is a very educated and attractive environment.” AKHAN Semiconductor will invest up to $15 million in their facility in Tri-State Business Park and bring 80 high-paying jobs to Gurnee this year alone with more to come. GARRETT C. KONCAN, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL SERVICES, INC. From the playgrounds of Spaulding School to the classrooms of Viking School and Warren Township High, Garrett Koncan says he always knew the small but growing Gurnee community was special. ➤

“I love the area where I grew up,” says the 27-year-old associate financial planner whose parents, Greg and Tessa, and older brother, Jon, still call Gurnee home. While a student at Warren High, Koncan says friendships formed during his four years of varsity soccer and skills learned in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club sprouted deep roots and helped solidify his career pathway. “Even as a youngster, my family played a key role in helping me better understand financial responsibility and the importance of giving back,” says Koncan, who recalls his early interest in the stock market and his excitement when he first received a stock certificate as a birthday gift. “We also learned how important it is to reach out to help our neighbors, lending a hand at the local soup kitchen or donating proceeds from our garage sale to a local charity.” Koncan, who earned his degree in finance and minored in economics at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, says those early leadership lessons served him well on campus where he was named vice president of finance for the Campus Activities Board. While a student, Koncan also became a founding and charter member of the NIU chapter of Sigma Nu, a social and service fraternity. Service and community involvement also became hallmarks of Koncan’s early professional career as he returned to Gurnee in 2010 following graduation to join the Ameriprise Financial Services team as a certified financial planner with Jack M. Dunk & Associates. With deep community ties and long-time friendships, his certified financial planning expertise is especially vital as he works to help clients shape financial solutions and make day-to-day investments

and finances easily understandable as clients build and preserve wealth. As an active member of the active Gurnee Rotary Club and its president-elect, Koncan currently serves as vocational chair and lends a hand with the organization’s mentoring program, providing weekly one-on-one mentorship to an eighth grade student at Viking School. He also helps coordinate the Rotary’s scholarship program and assists in their book donation efforts. He also lends a hand reviewing business plans, advising and training high school FBLA members for the northern area conference, and serves as a competition judge. As treasurer of the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce, Koncan says working together to bring Gurnee business and education providers together to share expertise and programming through the Chamber’s Business Education Roundtable is another way the community is able to come together. Community involvement also is an Ameriprise Financial hallmark at both the local and national levels. Their national day of service brings employees and clients into the community to lend a hand with a variety of endeavors including a recent service experience at the Northern Illinois Food Depository, where Koncan, his coworkers, family, and many clients rolled up their sleeves to help package food. “As a kid, Gurnee was always a special place,” says Koncan, who notes today’s Gurnee community also is idyllic due in part to its prime location, easy access to transportation, extensive shopping, wonderful schools, thriving business community, and abundant recreation. “But it’s really the people who make the community truly special.”

DEANNE DALGAARD-FISHER, HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER While not a Gurnee native, Deanne Dalgaard-Fisher, a member of the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, certainly has her heart planted firmly in the Gurnee community. The single mother of a 4-year-old daughter is passionate about education, community and helping children be successful. As the owner of the Huntington Learning Center, which recently relocated from Gurnee, she adheres to the mission of giving every student the best education possible. Dalgaard-Fisher says it’s the people and the small-town sense of community involvement and pride which call her home. Dalgaard-Fisher says she chose Gurnee as home for her business six years ago based upon the town’s prime location, its excellent schools, small hometown atmosphere, and the involved business community. “I stay involved because the community has become family to me,” admits the active community volunteer who is a member of and chairs several civic committees. Among her many volunteer posts, Dalgaard-Fisher currently serves as a member of the Chamber board and volunteers as program director. As a member of the Business Education Partners program, Dalgaard-Fisher says she finds great hope for the future as she assists with the Taste of College event, offering eighth grade Gurnee area students a three-day opportunity to visit local post-secondary campuses and participate in classes at the College of Lake County, University Center and DeVry Institute of Technology. Established in

2004, the Business Education Partners program serves to enhance and strengthen educational preparation through collaboration with area business leaders. She is a member of the board and past president of the Exchange Club of Gurnee, an affiliate of the all-volunteer, national service organization for men and women who want to serve their community, develop leadership skills and enjoy new friendships. “Sponsoring a wide range of activities to improve our communities, help the disadvantaged and encourage good American citizenship, the Exchange Club’s principal areas service include youth, Americanism, community service and our national project, child abuse prevention,” she explains. With a firm commitment to volunteerism, instilled during her earliest days, Dalgaard-Fisher also serves as a four-year volunteer and current treasurer for Gurnee Days, an annual celebration that brings the community together for a safe, fun-filled family event. For 43 years, the festivities have been planned and orchestrated by the Gurnee Days Corporation, a nonprofit, volunteer organization and draw thousands to a carnival, fireworks, concerts and stage events. In addition, as a member of the Woodland Foundation, she is committed to raising monies for educational endeavors at the Woodland District 50 schools, and as a member of the Woodland External Committee works to enhance community and business involvement in the schools. “Involved residents, a dedicated business community, volunteerism and civic pride are all hallmarks of a flourishing and vibrant community,” says Dalgaard-Fisher. “It’s why Gurnee is my family.” ✺

Shopping

T

here’s no doubt you can shop until you literally drop in Gurnee. The Village of Gurnee is a small business epicenter and shopping mecca.

Home to the largest outlet and value retail shopping destination in Illinois and boasting more than 200 stores, the Gurnee Mills Mall, acknowledged as the ninth most visited mall in the country, has been a prime shopping destination since first opening its doors in 1991. It also has the distinction of being the largest producer of sales tax revenue for the Village of Gurnee. Located at the intersection of Interstate 94 and Grand Avenue (Route 132), just 40 minutes from both downtown Chicago and Milwaukee, the mall attracts thousands of shoppers each day from nearby communities, bus trips and small group destination shoppers who stay in local hotels and visit the mall for several consecutive days. But, Gurnee Mills isn’t the only destination for shoppers seeking everything from clothing and home goods to cars, electronics, furniture, appliances, accessories, and more. From small, cozy boutiques to big box retailers, destination shopping and dining are key to commerce in Gurnee. SMALL BUSINESS IS BIG BUSINESS IN GURNEE Gurnee also is home to 22 shopping centers with more than 5 million square feet of retail offerings, a number of family and independently owned small businesses, unique shops, salons and restaurants with taste-tempting menus, According to Laura Sherrick of Balmes Flowers, a Gurnee business with 40 years of deep roots in the community, personalized attention and customer satisfaction are the keys to small business success. “From the beginning and still today, Gurnee offers a broad market for our floral products – dedicated consumers, schools, churches, in later years corporate entities and personnel and certainly local businesses,” explains Sherrick, who notes many local businesses also are suppliers, offering materials, goods, services, and technical expertise essential for operation of the floral business.

“Like many local Gurnee businesses, our longevity is based on a personalized approach to our customers,” explains Sherrick, who notes that as a full-service florist, customer expectations are at the forefront of service, whether planning for a wedding, special celebration, an anniversary, birthday, funeral, corporate event or any occasion. With so many choices so close at hand, there’s rarely a reason to venture outside Gurnee, even for those shoppers with the most eclectic and discriminating tastes. Located in Lake County, just 40 miles north of Chicago’s Loop and minutes from the Wisconsin border towns of Kenosha and Racine, Gurnee offers big city probusiness amenities along with its small town atmosphere. ✺

Health Care

A

n apple a day may keep the doctor away, but when more specialized care is needed, Gurnee has it all.

From top-tier medical care targeting even the most complex disease to primary care, specialty care, prevention, and wellness, Gurnee boasts a wide variety of health care options and opportunities to promote health and wellbeing. From cradle to childhood, adolescence, adulthood, senior care and to end-of-life care, the Gurnee community boasts a complete spectrum of quality health care and caring providers. Among the newest health care providers to call Gurnee home is Vista Home Health and Hospice. Centrally located at 1790 Nations Dr., hospice services are provided by an interdisciplinary team including a medical director, attending physicians, registered nurses, medical social workers, hospice nurse aides, spiritual counselors, bereavement counselors and volunteers. Licensed in both Cook and Lake County, the program served 550 home health and 163 hospice clients in 2014 and expects to expand services with the new Gurnee location, according to Laurel Thomas, R.N., Vista Hospice administrator.

Gurnee residents have access to an array of medical specialists as well as primary, tertiary, outpatient, immediate and convenient care centers. Among the closest hospitals and health care providers serving the Gurnee community, you’ll find: VISTA HEALTH SYSTEM Vista Health System has been serving the people of Lake County since 1891, and today remains fully committed to delivering exceptional care to the Gurnee community. Vista has more than 400 physicians on staff with primary care physicians, specialists and surgeons who cover the full range of medical care. The staff includes the growing Vista Physician Group of about 40 primary care providers and specialists.

“Hospice services are intended primarily for anyone with a terminal illness whose life expectancy is six months or less,” explains Thomas, who says hospice workers provide not only medical care, but also social, psychological, and spiritual support. The new Gurnee location offers an additional continuity of care vital to the Vista Health System and communities of Gurnee, Lindenhurst, North Chicago, Waukegan and Zion. “We are the only hospice provider this far north in Illinois,” says Thomas, who is the mother of four and a 20-year health care veteran. As a clinician at heart, she says she is delighted to return to both direct patient care and the thriving Gurnee community. Another Gurnee health care provider is Back-2-Health, which recently moved to a new location at 135 N. Greenleaf. Offering top-quality chiropractic treatments and acupuncture to balance the body’s energy, the busy medical office specializes in back health and offers X-rays, personalized consultations, body balancing adjustments, nutritional counseling, trigger-point therapy, gentle traction therapy, traditional acupuncture, therapeutic massage and deep tissue massage. Aromatherapy featuring the use of calming lavender for stress reduction is one of the newest offerings, according to Beth Harris, Back-2-Health office manager, who says treatments are offered in conjunction with muscle stimulation, and more traditional relaxation techniques. In partnership with a Gurnee infertility specialist, Back-2-Health also offers acupuncture to women seeking infertility treatment.

18

In addition to one-on-one chiropractic sessions, group classes are offered and include therapeutic yoga for back and neck health, chair yoga for those with mobility restrictions, posture and balance classes, meditation and deep breathing exercise classes.

Business & Education

I

t is said that a good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination and instill a love of learning. That couldn’t be truer for Gurnee’s young students, teens, tweens and adult learners of all ages as they tap into a wealth of educational opportunities right within the community. Academic excellence is the hallmark of success for young K-8 students attending the community’s two elementary school districts and teens attending Warren Township High School District 121. Among the newest offerings is a full-day kindergarten which comes to the Gurnee community this fall. Educators at Woodland District 50 are putting the finishing touches on enhanced curriculum for the upcoming school year. The full-day kindergarten program will expand the depth of reading, writing and math instruction, as well as social emotional learning, social studies, dramatic play, technology and enrichment choices. “We are thrilled to implement a full-day kindergarten program at Woodland,” says Dr. Dr. Joy A. Swoboda, Woodland District 50 superintendent. “The additional time in school gives the students a solid foundation which helps shape their academic journey in our district.” The district encourages children to enter into the full-day program although parents who prefer to enroll their kindergarteners in a half-

day program will continue to have that option. This program is free with no additional fees beyond the current practice of a registration fee associated with this full-day program. Benefits are academic as well as social-emotional, say district educators, who indicate there is little dispute about how much better full-day students do when compared to half-day students at the end of the school year. ➤

The District 56 Tech Trek is a self-paced professional development program uses the SAMR model of technology integration in the classroom and is based on the research of Dr. Ruben Puentedura. D56 technology trainers developed this program using the concept of “gamification,” bringing many of the features of gaming that students enjoy to increase motivation and perseverance.

More than 89 percent of respondents to a recent community-wide survey support full-day kindergarten at Woodland. Survey responses indicate the top three desires for the additional time include more reading and literacy instruction, more math instruction and more time for social skills development. Approximately two-thirds of all Lake County school districts offer full-day kindergarten for their students. In Illinois, 76 percent of kindergarten students attend full-day programs. Technology enhancement is on the front lines of academic success for students this fall at Gurnee District 56’s four K-8 elementary schools, according to John Hutton, superintendent, who points to a new staff development project designed to ignite innovation and certify educators in technology skills through a game-based process. “It is incredibly innovative, and I believe will motivate teachers to enhance their technology skills in our 1:1 iPad environment,” explains Dr. Hutton, who says refining and expanding use of technology in the classroom is key.

The four levels of SAMR can be defined, simply, as Substitution – The technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change from what we are already doing. Augmentation – A direct tool substitute with functional changes. Modification – The technology allows for significantly redesigning the task. Redefinition – The technology allows for creation of tasks that were previously inconceivable. D56 has also added another level to the model – Leadership. That can be achieved when teachers share their knowledge and skills with their colleagues through offering formal and informal trainings and support. EDUCATIONAL ROUNDTABLE The Gurnee Chamber of Commerce works with local school districts, businesses and the Lake County Chamber of Commerce in order to foster communication and collaboration through an Education Roundtable. With a mission to serve and improve educational opportunity and business achievement for all students and businesses, the Educational Roundtable is composed of leaders from education, business, community, and government. The Roundtable is charged with making ongoing recommendations for both the educational and business communities.

“Within less than a year of establishment, the Education Roundtable has already proven useful by enhancing programs at the schools, providing volunteer opportunities to local businesses and creating an environment for honest feedback and dialogue,” says Deanne Dalgaard Fisher, chairwoman, who notes the group currently is working on a quarterly informational push out to the community in order to better inform individuals of the inner workings of school financials. “This need became apparent at one of our first meetings when many questions were asked regarding school finance in relation to property taxes and programming,” Dalgaard Fisher states. “Through the Education Roundtable, schools now have an opportunity to disseminate information to the business community that can further enhance business involvement and growth.” Roundtable members agree possibilities are endless in what this group can accomplish. “Although the influence may appear minor now, the impact over the next few years will be great as the relationship between the school community and business community continues to grow,” she explains. ✺

hether it’s listening to the sounds of summer under a star-filled sky, braving the dips and drops of an amusement park ride, exploring Gurnee’s rich history, dining, dancing, or simply enjoying the abundance of nature, Gurnee has it all. The Village plays host to a variety of family fun-filled festivals throughout the year, offers an array special events, and a vast entertainment line-up sure to please the young, the young-at-heart and everyone in between. Visitors and residents enjoy a multitude of arts and cultural opportunities throughout the year. Join the summertime fun Aug. 7-10 at the annual Gurnee Days celebration, bringing the community together for a safe, fun-filled family event. For 42 years, the festivities have been planned and orchestrated by the Gurnee Days Corporation, a nonprofit, volunteer organization. The event is funded by contributions from area businesses and civic organizations. Most events take place in the Village Center – Viking Park, Peterson Park, Library, Viking School, and the Police and Fire Stations. The theme of the 2014 Gurnee Days event is “Little Bit Country, Little Bit Rock ‘N’ Roll.”

the “fun-shine” at the Lost Paradise Indoor Waterpark while raising money for various community organizations. Viking Park Band Shell (4374 Old Grand Ave.) is the place to be for the popular Gurnee Park District Sounds of Summer musical series featuring early evening concerts. Other special events include a variety of activities such as the patriotic 4th of July Fest at Six Flags Great America. Gurnee visitors also might indulge in an evening of Italian food and music at Italian Fest at Viking Park, sponsored by the Gurnee Park District, or enjoy the colors of autumn and cold weather fun at Gurnee Park District fall and winter festivals. REVISITING GURNEE’S CULTURAL ROOTS Take a trip through yesteryear at the Mother Rudd House and Museum (4690 Old Grand Ave). The original 1844 building was once a stagecoach stop, tavern, post office, candy store, and acted as the town hall of the area, in addition to serving as voting place, post office and dance hall. Rooms on display in the house include a 1930s kitchen and a 1900 bedroom. Displays in the interior of the Mother Rudd House include historic photographs of Gurnee. View artifacts from the Civil War, see the “Crystal Ballroom” where traveling guests would be entertained, or the room dedicated to the family of a local man that died on the Titanic.

Or plan for a day of adventure and fun at Six Flags Great America, opening for the 2014 season May 3, features 100 acres of family fun, 14 heart-pounding rollercoasters, spectacular shows and special children’s themed areas. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, situated adjacent to the amusement park, opens May 24. From April 13 through June 13, KeyLime Cove and the United Way of Lake County invite the general public to their Community Days. The limited-time promotion allows visitors to enjoy some time in Completely restored by the Village of Gurnee, this historical home is reported to have been part of the Underground Railroad. Slaves would be housed in the basement or the recently re-mortared barn. The building also houses the Warren Township Historical Society and is the oldest structure in Warren Township, built in 1841 as an inn, and one of the oldest structures in Lake County.

Another Gurnee landmark, the Button Room Museum (4072 Old Grand Ave.) offers a glimpse into the past as visitors learn about the life of Elizabeth “Peg” Hewitt who lived her entire 95 years in a small home at the corner of O’Plaine Road and Grand Avenue. The vintage and antique Button Museum features displays that rotate monthly based upon a current theme and showcases Hewitt’s passion for button collecting and local history. Hewitt’s mother, Cora Struder, served as Village Clerk for 28 years and is believed to have been the first woman in Lake County to own an automobile. The museum hosts a variety of small clubs, exhibitions, workshops, and events. ✺
